Bio

I'm a very involved student and passionate about my community. I believe opportunities are important for many students growing up and having big dreams like mine. I enjoy writing in my leisure time but as for long-term study goals, I'm looking forward to exploring the medical field and narrowing down my study category. Despite my very, what seems like, planned life, I enjoy taking risks and doing something new every now and then. I enjoy doing exciting things and if given the opportunity, I would love to strive forward with a career path that will allow me to continue being the adventurous person I am.

In my neighborhood, kindness isn’t just a virtue, it’s the glue that holds us together. It’s the extra meal shared during a food drive, the welcoming smile at a church event, or the helping hand offered to a neighbor in need. For as long as I can remember, I’ve seen how small acts of love can create waves of change. Inspired by this, I’ve dedicated my time to weaving advocacy and kindness into everything I do, ensuring that the spirit of community and compassion thrives for generations to come. One of the most fulfilling ways I’ve done this is through organizing food drives with Senator Benson for our district. The lines of grateful families picking up bags of groceries aren’t just about nourishment, they represent hope and community. These food drives, along with regular efforts at my church, have given me the chance to step into the role of an advocate for my neighbors, ensuring their needs are met and their voices are amplified. Similarly, the diaper pantries we organize for new parents provide more than just essential supplies; they offer a message that someone sees their struggles and cares deeply about their success. These initiatives are my way of speaking up for those who may not feel heard. Advocacy isn’t always about speeches or debates, it’s often in the quiet moments of compassion, like handing a young mother a package of diapers or listening to an elder express their worries about making ends meet. It’s these moments that inspire me to keep giving back and finding new ways to serve. My dedication to this work has also led me to engage with government organizations. Most recently, I joined the Alsobrooks Youth Leadership program, where I’ve had the privilege of advocating for my community on a broader scale. Through this program, I’ve helped plan events and initiatives that address the needs of underserved and underrepresented populations. From workshops to community engagement activities, this experience has reinforced my belief that even small actions can have a profound impact when paired with a genuine desire to uplift others. Of course, some of my favorite ways to give back are the smaller, everyday acts of kindness. At my church, I volunteer with the Christian formation program, teaching little ones in Sunday school and helping them grow in both faith and compassion. I assist with the children’s pageants, creating opportunities for families to come together and celebrate their traditions. Every Halloween, I organize a “Trunk or Treat,” transforming our church parking lot into a magical space where children without safe neighborhoods can experience the joy of trick-or-treating. Watching their faces light up with excitement is a reminder of how even simple gestures can make a lasting difference. Through all of these experiences, a common thread runs deeply: the commitment to giving back. These acts of kindness aren’t just about what I give, they’re about honoring the people who have poured into me over the years. My neighbors, mentors, and community have shaped who I am, and it’s my responsibility to return that kindness and empower others to do the same. Advocacy and kindness, to me, are inseparable. They are the twin forces that drive my work and my passion for creating a better world. Whether I’m organizing food drives, volunteering at church, or speaking up for others through leadership programs, I know that every act of compassion has a ripple effect. It inspires hope, strengthens bonds, and changes lives. In everything I do, I will strive to honor the legacy of Jennifer and Rob Tower, embodying the love, generosity, and selflessness that defined their lives. By continuing to advocate for my neighbors and spread kindness, I hope to build a community that reflects their spirit, a community where everyone feels valued and heard.

Imagine a world where indulging in a juicy pineapple slice doesn’t come with unwelcome hives. For me, this idea was far from reality. Growing up allergic to most fruits meant enviously watching my sisters indulge while I risked discomfort for just one bite. This experience sparked my fascination with the immune system's paradoxical responses—how it overreacts to harmless substances, causing allergic reactions. This curiosity has since evolved into a mission: to decode and combat the complexities of allergies. As a Microbiology major, I aim to uncover solutions for allergy sufferers worldwide. Allergies, often dismissed as minor inconveniences, can trigger chronic conditions like asthma, impacting millions. I’m inspired by researchers like Professor Simon Hogan from Michigan University, who study the immune system's interplay with environmental factors. At college, I plan to work alongside professors conducting similar research, exploring how chronic exposure to allergens alters immune responses. Questions such as, “How do environmental triggers amplify allergic reactions?” drive my curiosity and fuel my commitment to finding answers. Through courses in microbial physiology and biochemistry, I will delve into the role of microbiota in allergy development. By engaging in hands-on experiments and shadowing researchers, I hope to contribute to innovative therapeutic approaches, such as microbiome modulation and personalized immunotherapies. These experiences will prepare me to tackle global disparities in allergy education, diagnosis, and treatment. With roots in Guatemala and South Africa, I’ve seen firsthand how healthcare disparities affect marginalized communities. In South Africa, allergies are often misunderstood, with limited resources for education or treatment. My vision includes raising awareness through community programs and training healthcare workers to recognize and manage allergies. I would also collaborate with local institutions to study the microbiome’s role in allergy development, particularly in diverse populations. In Guatemala, where rural communities face significant barriers to healthcare, my focus will be on creating affordable allergy treatments. I plan to establish mobile clinics and school-based programs that teach allergy management while training healthcare providers in early diagnosis and treatment. By advocating for dietary changes that support gut health and developing locally sourced medications, I aim to address these disparities sustainably. Kalia D. Davis exemplified excellence, kindness, and ambition—values I strive to emulate in my work and life. Her legacy reminds me to lead with compassion and determination. Like Kalia, I believe in leaving a meaningful impact, one that empowers others and inspires change. This scholarship will enable me to deepen my research and outreach efforts, bridging the gap between innovation and accessibility. Through education, advocacy, and research, I am committed to transforming lives and creating a future where allergies no longer hinder anyone’s ability to enjoy life’s simple pleasures.
