My name is Tori, and I am entering my second year at Seattle University to pursue my Nursing degree. I have wanted to work in healthcare for as long as I can remember, and particularly with children and infants. I became fully self-supporting at 16 years old and have been working tirelessly to graduate without having to take out private student loans.
I discovered my life's goal to become a Nurse, and eventually a Nurse Practitioner, in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, in middle school after the birth of my younger brother. Seeing him spend weeks in the NICU and the effect it had on my mother was heartbreaking, but at the same time seeing the dedication the nurses had to caring for him and easing my mother's worries inspired me. Since then I have pursued different healthcare based extracurriculars eager to begin nursing school, where I am now putting my dreams into action.

Mental Health Scholarship for Women
Challenges that come with navigating college life as a woman have a unique twist in that mental health can be what helps or hinders a student the most. Having been diagnosed with Bipolar I and Borderline Personality Disorder in my life, I had to jump through some extreme emotional and psychological hurdles that set me back both academically and personally. Understanding and taking care of my mental health has been a turning point in my pursuit of higher education and in shaping my aspirations to serve others in need.
I was diagnosed with the conditions at 16, in 2021, after years of undiagnosed struggles that included intense psychotic breaks-feeling as though my whole world was crashing down on me. In such episodes, I had feelings of hopelessness and desperation; I was scared that I would soon lose all I struggled for: my education, my future, and my loved ones. The challenges were worse when I experienced my most recent severe episode this February 2024, wherein I found myself in the hospital, uncertain about my potential to return to college. It was then that I realized my mental health was a personal fight and an integral part of my academic functioning. The pressure to pursue an intense academic program, together with the expectations placed on a woman by society, typically mounted in bringing the worst out of anxiety and self-doubt in me. However, these terrifying moments started to develop a fire within me—a deep urge to not only care for my mental health but also pursue a career whereby I will be in a position to help others who could be going through similar struggles.
Right after discharge from the hospital, I relentlessly started to familiarize myself with the contingencies of my re-enrollment in college. I collaborated with my healthcare team to devise a plan that met the needs of my mental health, in that I could still attend classes. I pursued professional help through regular sessions with a licensed mental health counselor, where I went through symptom management and stress-reduction techniques. I also started to be more mindful and practice meditation, becoming crucial parts of my daily routine that would help me stay grounded even in the most intense environment.
I have grown from the experiences to develop a want to serve others in need. These experiences have influenced me to seek a career in nursing, particularly neonatal nursing, where I can provide service with compassion to families during some of the most tender moments of their lives. I feel that my input on mental health issues will make me relate to the patient and the family in a different dimension, hence creating time for them and making them feel heard and supported. Mental health is very crucial for me in both academics and personal life, shaping how I will experience and pursue my aspirations. I remain steadfast in positive ways to address my mental health and use that journey to help inspire others. I hope this will allow me to be effective in the field of healthcare. In short, this scholarship would go a long way in reinforcing education and mental wellness. Finally, I would wish to thank you for a consideration of my application.
Bright Lights Scholarship
As a first-generation college student, education is the pathway to remodeling my life and building the future I am passionate about. My goal is to become a neonatal intensive care unit nurse, and from there, to make my way up the ladder to become a neonatal nurse practitioner. Having had a firsthand opportunity of a difference which compassionate, specialized care can make, I am committed to serving vulnerable infants and their families-primarily those who may face socioeconomic hardships or barriers to care.
Growing up in an underprivileged family has allowed me to understand that education is a gift, which would be quite ungrateful if taken for granted. My parents did all they could to try and provide for us, but most of the situations fell into inexperienced parental grounds regarding college, and thus became hard to navigate. At the same time, these very difficulties push me to work harder and strive higher. To me, education means an opportunity and hope-a hope of affording my life and others a better life when struggling. Currently, I work two jobs to support myself through school while keeping a GPA above 3.5 with the load of balanced responsibilities while taking hard courses in nursing. I am determined to push through the obstacles, as I believe my future in health care will enable me to make real, deep change.
The education and life experience I get will allow me to give back to society by becoming an advocate for high-quality newborn and family care-especially for those underserved communities. I am deeply concerned about the maternal mortality crisis affecting Black women and disparities in health care that continue to persist. It is with this degree that I plan to support new initiatives that will improve access to health care and raise awareness about health disparities with infants and mothers. I also want to mentor other first-generation, low-income students who want a career in healthcare so that these students know it is possible to rise above the financial and social barriers to realize their dreams.
Receiving this scholarship would bring me closer to fulfilling these goals by allowing me to focus on my studies without the constant stress over the financial burden. Most importantly, this would mean carrying the legacy of Kirk I. Woods out into the world, instilled with the values of ambition, determination, and compassion. The path from here on is no different in its degree of difficulty, but with each step, I feel further motivated toward excellence academically, which will help to make a difference in society and enable me to contribute toward future generations of students hailing from similar backgrounds with dreams of making a change. This scholarship would support my education and further fuel this vision of the healthcare system: compassionate, equitable care for each patient, especially the smallest and most vulnerable. I am committed to honoring Kirk I. Woods's legacy through my education and my future service to others, to pay forward to others the support I have received along the way.
Kirk I. Woods Memorial Scholarship
Education is reform in my life, bringing a future I am strongly passionate about. My goal and dream are to become an intensive care nurse for new-borns, and from there, a neonatal nurse practitioner. Having had the opportunity to see a difference compassion and specialized care make, I am dedicated to serving vulnerable infants and families, especially those who experience socioeconomic hardships or have otherwise limited access to care.
Growing up in a not-so-well-up family, I do not take anything like education for granted. Struggling to raise us up, my family background has made it somewhat difficult to navigate because of the lack of direct college experience in my family. These are some of the challenges that have driven me to work harder and dream big. For me, education is an opportunity and hope-a promise to improve my own life and be of help to others in need. Presently, I have to work two jobs to finance my education, keeping a GPA over 3.5 with a grueling load of nursing courses. I do not let it deter me as I know my future in health will create the changes I have been longing to see.
This mantra stays with me in my continuing education and guides my giving back to promote quality care to newborns and their families, especially those from underrepresented communities. Of greatest concern for me are the maternal mortality crisis for Black women and health disparities. I will use my degree to support new initiatives that improve healthcare access and raise awareness of health disparities among infants and mothers. Additionally, I hope to be able to mentor other first-generation and low-income students who have interests in the health field and be in a position to show them one can surmount financial and social obstacles to make their dreams realities.
The scholarship would bring me one step closer to attaining these goals by allowing me to focus on my studies without always bearing in mind the money factor. More importantly, it will allow me to carry the legacy of Kirk I. Woods, instilled in me through ambition, determination, and compassion. My road will be long and not easy, but with every step forward, I am further motivated to excel academically, have an impact on my community, and give something back to future generations of students like me who dream of making a difference. This scholarship would mean so much to me, not only for educational support but also for the facilitation of a vision in healthcare where no patient, especially the smallest and most helpless, will be denied compassionate and equal care. I am committed to honoring Kirk I. Woods's legacy through my education and my future service to others, paying forward the support I have received along the way.
RonranGlee Literary Scholarship
"And when he approaches the light his eyes will be dazzled, and he will not be able to see anything at all of what are now called realities. But he will need to grow accustomed to the sight of the upper world. And first he will see the shadows best, next the reflections of men and other objects in the water, and then the objects themselves; then he will gaze upon the light of the moon and the stars and the spangled heaven; and he will see the sky and the stars by night better than the sun or the light of the sun by day. Last of all he will be able to see the sun, and not mere reflections of it in the water, but he will see it in its own proper place, and not in another; and he will contemplate it as it is. He will then proceed to argue that this is he who gives the season and the years, and is the guardian of all that is in the visible world, and in a certain way the cause of all things which he and his fellows have been accustomed to behold." — The Republic, Book VII
The Cave Allegory in Plato's The Republic is a philosophical journey from darkness into enlightenment through imagery of light to sight. In this passage, he describes the gradual process whereby he who rises from darkness has his capacity extended till he becomes really able to discern reality. As the emancipated individual steps into the light, at first, he is "dazzled" and cannot distinctly make out anything; after some time, though, he comes to see shadows, then reflections, and finally acquires the true forms of things. Here, Plato achieved a profoundly poignant expression of intellectual enlightenment: slow, often painful adjustment of perception to bear deeper realities. Ultimately, this passage testifies to enlightenment as transformation and knowledge that sets the human mind free.
The light metaphor that Plato uses for truth and understanding is hardly coincidental. Firstly, the newly freed prisoner can see only shadows - the very type of shadows with which he was once convinced were a whole reality inside the cave. This progression of thought-from shadow to reflection to object-is in a direct parallel with the steps in intellectual development. That is, what one perceives at first might be simple, superficial truths, constrained by the limitations of one's former life and understanding. With time, however, he becomes more attuned to the complex shades of reality, just as the released prisoner becomes accustomed to the "upper world." Plato's analogy insists that enlightenment is never immediate but rather is a gradual growth of perception and understanding, each stage revealing layers of reality previously unseen.
In the second half of the passage, Plato describes how the liberated prisoner, in his progress, contemplates "the light of the moon and the stars and the spangled heaven" until he finally beholds the sun itself, "not mere reflections of it in the water." In this case, Plato provides a real transition from incomplete knowledge to perfect wisdom. The sun has come to represent the ultimate source of knowledge and truth, the "Good" in Platonic terms. In speaking of the sun as "guardian" of the visible world and "cause of all things," Plato indicates that true knowledge is both foundational and all-encompassing, impinging on every aspect of reality. This ascension to the highest plane of perception underlines Plato's conviction of an independent world of absolute truths that exist above and beyond human vision, just waiting to be uncovered by any who would take the trouble.
Imagery by Plato also suggests that the process of enlightenment is usually accompanied by inconvenience and resistance. It is also there, that "at first he would not be able to see anything at all" and needs to "grow accustomed" to the brightness of the upper world. This is an initial shock meant to symbolize how hard it is to challenge long-held beliefs and transcend the comfort of ignorance. Similarly, if the freed prisoner finds it difficult to handle the light, there are numerous occasions when one determined to learn has been disoriented-arguably discouraged-by the magnitude of his ignorance. Plato's message is not altogether pessimistic, though; the pain of enlightenment will not last, and a tenacious individual will achieve profound and liberating insight into the nature of reality.
This allegory also carries a message about the function of the philosopher in society. Plato here suggests that the enlightened have some responsibility to enlighten others, still "in the cave," about the real nature of existence. To this extend, while enlightenment is a personal and arduous journey, it takes on a communitarian feel in that the enlightened are called upon to use their insights in order to allow others to better perceive the world around them. Plato's passage therefore not only shows man's personal pursuit of knowledge but also a responsibility to help develop society intellectually.
Plato's allegory of the cave comes alive in this extract as it tells of the journey of transformation from darkness to light, and the eternal wrestle for truth to be seen in its real light. Equally, Plato engages in strong imagery: shadows, reflections, and light-to make it be taken that the path to truth involves bravery, patience, and an openness toward growth. Enlightenment is not a singular moment of revelation but a continuous process of expanding one's understanding and embracing deeper truths. It is a philosophical understanding from very ancient times, one that still applies today and reminds one of the strong power of knowledge which raises one from darkness to light and enables him to experience the world in a far more varied and significant way.
John J Costonis Scholarship
I intend to work as a neonatal intensive care unit nurse and later as a neonatal nurse practitioner. This professional route has taken on a very personal importance in my life in that I experienced firsthand how important NICU care was and the kind of life-changing effects compassionate healthcare can make. Growing up as the child of teenage parents, I learned early in my life the value of hard work, resiliency, and independence. Our family struggled to attain financial stability, and I grew up facing the realities of poverty, knowing higher education would be required if I wanted to create a different life for myself and have a meaningful impact on others.
By the time I turned 16, I was financially independent, which instilled such discipline and tenacity that I have since carried over into my academic life. Whereas it was difficult to balance my job with my studies, I knew I couldn't depend on private loans to finance my education-a long-term financial burden on my family. Today, I work two jobs and attend college full-time; I do the best I can to keep my grades high and participate in extracurricular activities that are related to healthcare. I have taken on roles that teach me the skills I'll be using in my nursing career: fast-paced, high-pressure environments where prioritizing and communicating effectively is an absolute must. With every experience, I am one step closer to living my dream-to be able to work in the NICU.
Along the way with this journey, I have faced many challenges, which come hand-in-hand, trying to juggle a lot of responsibilities. It's not easy working late at night and then getting up for classes early in the morning. Days have times when running a mental and physical marathon. Still, I am driven by the goal of becoming the first in my family to graduate from college, setting an example for my younger siblings. Financial pressure is always there, but it has taught me resilience, self-reliance, and time management. I'm aware that in order to achieve all I intend to achieve, there are certain sacrifices that must be made, and I have accepted such hardships as part of my journey.
Although indirect, my educational trajectory was one that defined my work ethic and further fueled my passion for healthcare. I am committed to a lifelong career of service to vulnerable populations; it is for this reason that infants and families who must endure the challenge of critical care are of the utmost importance. My experiences have taught me the value of persistence, and I will carry on the spirit of John J. Costonis by living the values of hard work, resiliency, and devotion. Receiving this scholarship would be a great assistance to me and would enable me to give more focus to my studies and clinical experiences. It would go a long way in my career path, enabling me to work with families and infants in need and provide opportunities for a positive impact in the area of health. I am grateful for this opportunity to apply and for further being able to create a meaningful future, committed to serving others.
John Young 'Pursue Your Passion' Scholarship
I have a passion for making tangible differences in the lives of those most vulnerable and fuelling my journey into the nursing profession. Having been witness to incredible capacity both for compassionate healthcare and for the gaps that persist within it, I am now committed to lending a voice to those who often go unheard-particularly within an NICU. My aspiration is to become a NICU nurse and later a neonatal nurse practitioner, where I can support newborns and their families during critical and vulnerable moments.
The most valuable experience that influenced my choice of profession was when my younger brother spent time in the NICU. As he was born prematurely, he required long-term medical intervention, and our family had to cope with uncertainty and fear and, at times, helplessness. These NICU nurses did so much more than provide very specialized medical support; they gave us hope, strength, and guidance when we needed it most. It was quite inspiring to watch their dedication and empathy, inspiring me toward nursing and, particularly, into a role that would show the same kind of care and support to other families. I hope to be the bridge between complex medical needs and compassionate family-centered care.
Direct patient care is not the only thing I am committed to, but rather to the greater mission of trying to help reduce systemic inequities affecting poor families. Much of my academic coursework has weighed in on the access disparities experienced by many marginalized groups, especially within the context of maternal and neonatal health. This has been driven by a desire to learn from this more-so that, as a nurse, I would be able to advocate for fairness in treatment. Beyond the bedside, I hope to contribute to policy changes, reduce disparities, and improve healthcare outcomes for all patients regardless of background. I want to be that voice in the medical community when some may not have a voice and to set a tone in health care for equity and inclusion.
I view nursing as more about one's character than their technical skill. Being a first-generation student means that through the navigation of complicated healthcare challenges, I have learned resilience and the value of determination. It is those personal beliefs that fuel my ambition: to make a positive, lasting difference with every step towards highly skilled and deeply compassionate care. This scholarship would give me the opportunity to focus on my education and training, developing into one of the best healthcare professionals possible. I consider myself more than honored to continue with the same spirit of resilience and ambition that John Young showed and do all in my power to make sure patients and families get nothing less.
Dr. Michael Paglia Scholarship
The impetus for earning the nursing degree and eventually practicing as a NICU nurse has developed from both personal experiences and a strong desire to be an advocate for vulnerable populations. Growing up first generation, lower socioeconomic status meant I more or less had to navigate the healthcare and educational systems on my own. This has driven me to work hard to build a career that would put me in a position to support others who are similarly disadvantaged.
My intention to enter healthcare was solidified at the birth of my younger brother, born prematurely and requiring care in the NICU. He had been in critical condition, and during those trying weeks, I saw firsthand the vital role NICU nurses played in his care and in supporting our family through one of the most trying times of our lives. The compassion of the nurses was extremely overwhelming, skillful, and resilient; it stuck with me forever. They were sources of hope, strength, and knowledge when one felt quite uncertain, and I knew then that I wanted to be that source of support for people.
The more I read, the more cognizant I become of the particular health disparities that plague the marginalized communities-the alarming rates of maternal and infant mortality among Black mothers and babies. These inequities, I have realized through my coursework, are many times the outcome of biased structures and systems in health care. As a future NICU nurse, I am committed to advocating for these patients and working toward a more inclusive, equitable, patient-centered health care system.
I chose nursing because it is both a science and an art, blending technical skills with a human touch. That is particularly true in the NICU, not only because it involves focused care for the patient but most especially very important emotional support for the families. I want to continue my education and later on become a neonatal nurse practitioner so that more complex cases can be referred to me and I may have a say in the policies for better patient outcomes. I would like to utilize my degree in ensuring that families of all backgrounds receive optimal care for their newborn, and to always help teach and guide younger nurses, especially first-generation college students and those from low-income backgrounds, since I know firsthand some of the special challenges they will face in their schoolwork. This scholarship would afford me more time to study and practice with less concern about finances. It would be an honor to move forward in support of underserved families by continuing the legacy of Dr. Michael Paglia in championing the same compassionate care he is renowned for.
Wicked Fan Scholarship
The first time I saw Wicked, I was in the eighth grade, and it was unlike anything I'd ever seen. It was also my first live musical I had ever been to, a special outing with my mother who had loved Wicked for as long as I could remember. Upon entering the theater, I was mesmerized by the grandness of it all; the atmosphere was electric. Although I was a part of the school band and loved music, I had never imagined how theater would put together story and music so powerfully. Wicked opened up my world to things that I never knew existed, to the life-changing matter in which music, characters, and emotion can mix together.
When this musical first opened, I was swept away into the story of Elphaba and Glinda. The journey of friendship, acceptance of one's self, and courage, mirrored my own desires, really. I had always grown up as a little different from anyone else, never knowing how to balance my unique sense of individuality with the need to fit in with others. Elphaba's tenacity, her path to "defy gravity" and come into her identity, resonated deeply within me. I realized it would make many things in life challenging, but it was the only way I knew to be real. Wicked gave me the courage to pursue my passions-whether or not they be conventional by society's standards.
I guess one of the most valuable parts about Wicked is that it brought my mother and me closer together, even though our relationship has had its downturns. It was this story that worked its magic on both of us, and for the two of us, this has been ongoing. With a new Wicked movie out, we have kept in contact and reminisced about that first night apart from any miles. We share this love of this story and these characters that have become a source of comfort and common ground when things get rocky. To this day, Wicked means more to me than a musical. It reminds me to stand tall and proud of my differences, just like Elphaba. It's a reminder that even when life pulls us in different directions, the people and passions that truly matter will always bring us back together.
Expression in Medicine Scholarship
Free expression is a fundamental ideal in medicine, allowing healthcare professionals to share vital research, clinical insights, and new ideas that drive improvement and innovation in patient care. For me, as a sophomore nursing student with a goal of becoming a NICU nurse, free expression holds particular significance. Growing up with an ethnically diverse background as a Latina, I’ve become passionate about tackling healthcare disparities, especially in maternal care for Black women, who face disproportionately high mortality rates. Addressing these disparities requires an environment where healthcare professionals can openly discuss injustices, advocate for their patients, and explore the ethical implications of medical policies.
In my “Healthcare in the 21st Century” class, we examine the roles, ethics, and history of our profession and discuss the pressing need for an ethical, patient-centered approach. Having heard from speakers who have personally influenced these discussions—like Dr. Swanson, whose “Theory of Caring” underscores empathy and dignity in patient care—I’ve realized that free expression isn’t just about speaking up; it’s a duty to our patients. The Swanson Theory, centered around compassion, reminds us that questioning established norms, raising ethical concerns, and advocating for patient rights are essential parts of our role. Only when healthcare professionals feel empowered to speak freely can we bring attention to systemic issues that affect vulnerable groups, such as the bias often experienced by Black expectant mothers.
Free expression also allows us to learn and grow from one another’s experiences. The documentary Everybody’s Work, which highlights collective responsibility in healthcare, left a profound impression on me by showing how even the smallest roles contribute to large-scale change. It reminded me that my voice as a future NICU nurse can influence care at every level, from patient interactions to broader policies. Protecting the ability to speak freely about ethical concerns and disparities ensures that our healthcare system can remain responsive, transparent, and ultimately more compassionate.
In a field as high-stakes and personal as healthcare, defending free expression means ensuring that all voices—especially those advocating for vulnerable patients—are heard. By championing this principle, the next generation of healthcare professionals can build a medical system that truly prioritizes justice, equity, and patient-centered care.
STEAM Generator Scholarship
Exciting and daunting, my journey into higher education as a first-generation college student has been quite filled with many challenges experienced by few students of my age. Many times, I have found myself treading unfamiliar territory while carrying with me hopes and fears deeply rooted in the experiences and aspirations of my family. Coming from a Hispanic background, the value instilled in education has always been great, but for a college degree, it has proven to be very intricate.
The story of my family is one of resiliency and determination. My parents sacrificed so much in order for me to have those opportunities that they never did. They encouraged me in education, often telling me how knowledge serves as a guiding key out of poverty. However, they were not able to teach me how to beat the things that stood in my educational path, so I had to overcome those barriers by myself. The lack of guidance, combined with financial constraints, often makes me feel like I am walking a tightrope, balancing my aspirations against the weight of uncertainty. One of the things I most hope for is to be able to become a neonatal nurse, working in the NICU and caring for the most vulnerable of patients: babies born into difficult situations often dictated by addiction or other societal ills. This desire is deeply personal. I understand firsthand how the makeup of a family and the availability of community resources can affect the trajectory of a child's life. All these experiences have instilled in me a very strong passion to be that one person through whom needy families can feel supported, especially in the healthcare field.
However, my journey is not void of fears. The financial burden of acquiring a nursing degree is daunting, and with the continuously rising cost of college, I fear debt that may eventually make me incapable of supporting my family or reaching my career goals. The fear of not being accepted or not having a place in academic institutions always outpaces me. I wonder if this should be my space, when it appears that others have been better prepared to take care of it. It is these two passions that inspire me: the passion to learn and the passion given by my community. By pursuing higher education, I can fulfill not only my dreams but also make it easier for other people like me. I would not wish to be at the mercy of disadvantage but show the world that no matter where we came from, our selves can work our way out to succeed in higher education and beyond. I want to be a role model to inspire others, particularly my community, with examples that their dreams are within reach if they put their minds into it with dedication and hard work.
The scholarship would, to some extent, reduce the financial load that I face so that I can focus more on my academics and mission at the service of the needy. It would give me an opportunity to delve more into neonatal nursing. I see a future where I support families through health complexities, giving them the due amount of compassion and care. While this might be a very difficult journey into higher education, I am optimistic and resolute. Being a first-generation student has largely influenced my journey and aspirations. Sponsors of this scholarship offer me an opportunity to pursue my dream of changing my fears into positive catalyzers of change in my community.
Elevate Mental Health Awareness Scholarship
Even though people are living in one of the most prosperous and interconnected ages in history, depression, anxiety, substance abuse, and suicide rates just keep climbing. Depression is now even ranked in the United States as the 10th most common cause of death, with one person dying every 12 minutes. These shocking statistics raise awareness about the urgent need for effective mental health solutions.
My journey in understanding mental health began with my mother, Sheri Rosser. Throughout her lifetime, she struggled through different mental health battles that took precedence on her personal and familial life. My mom's resiliency and determination to get help inspired me to understand the complexities that come with mental health issues. She went through ups and downs in therapy, medications, and hospital stays and exposed me both to the struggles and the importance of support systems in mental health.
Growing up, I saw firsthand how mental health challenges can impact relations: Sometimes my mother's depression created a barrier, making it tough to connect. On the other hand, this taught me values regarding being empathetic, warm-hearted, and communicative. These experiences instilled in me the importance of mental health just as much as that of physical health and the need to address the former with the same seriousness and concern as the latter.
These personal experiences have influenced my aspiration to a great extent. In this respect, while pursuing a nursing undergraduate degree with special reference to neonatal care, I am motivated by an urge to serve those unfortunate children who get born into uneasy circumstances, which also include children born from addicted and mentally ill mothers. I firmly believe that I am in a position to help break the cycles of addiction and poor mental health through excellent care, supporting vulnerable situations of families. My aim would be championing the needs for comprehensive mental health resources regarding the health care system, ensuring that all individuals can get the support they deserve.
Further, I engage in a number of community activities that are geared toward raising awareness about mental health. I feel that volunteering at community organizations responsible for providing resources and access to support for those who struggle with their mental health has been enriching and a real opener, so to say. I have had the front-row seat and witnessed the difference it can make in somebody's life when support is accessible. This has further cemented my commitment to spreading awareness about mental health and working toward improving access to care for less privileged communities-particularly among BIPOC individuals, who are usually saddled with additional obstacles.
I believe it is these experiences with mental health-in particular my mother's journey-that have instilled in me the motivation for advocacy and a healthcare career. I work to bring mental health struggles out of the darkness and into the light, promoting understanding and support for those struggling. With the help of the Elevate Mental Health Awareness Scholarship, I hope to continue my education in this field with the eventual plan of creating a more compassionate healthcare environment. Together, we can light the way toward wholeness and support so no one walks the journey of their struggle in darkness, alone.
Eric W. Larson Memorial STEM Scholarship
A first-generation college student and a Hispanic, my path towards a neonatal nursing degree, an essential branch of health sciences, has been molded in almost equal measures by adversity and triumph. Raised in a financially disadvantaged household, I have seen firsthand how economic constraints can slow down educational ambitions. My father's addiction to alcohol also made me realize the importance of mental health and how it could alter the structure of a family. It is, however, this disadvantage that has been pushing me to strive to achieve success and to be able to make a change in people's lives, especially when it comes to health.
I had many disturbing experiences during my childhood. Most of the time, the emotional pain inflicted by my father's addiction overshadowed my happiness in my young years. I learned early to live with anxiety and uncertainty, during which time I developed resilience and mental wellbeing. While mom and dad were working hard to make sure my siblings and I got what we needed, the burden was heavy on our family. I looked to education and volunteer work for solace. I actively participated in locally based community service initiatives regarding mental health awareness and support for families affected by addiction. It is from these experiences that my commitment to wanting to make a difference in other people's lives was continually strengthened, while also being afforded the opportunity to connect with others of similar backgrounds.
It was during the period that I volunteered at a local hospital that the passion for nursing really began to grow, as I realized the enormous potential impact a health professional had to influence patients. This was an opportunity for me to be introduced into the neonatal unit, which particularly resonated with me, being highly conscious of the newborn's trials, especially those born into problems of addiction. I am inspired to be a neonatal nurse, to advocate on behalf of these fragile babies and give them the tender care that they deserve. I firmly believe that every child deserves a healthy start in life, no matter what their circumstance is.
My path to college has been quite rocky. Being a BIPOC woman in the field of STEM, I have felt far too often that this is a field of science that does not represent me. Meanwhile, I have purposefully sought mentorship and connection to supportive networks that uplift women of color in the sciences. Such relationships have empowered me to break down obstacles in my way, and I am committed to inspiring future generations of young women into the fields of STEM.
In my high school, I joined a STEM club that focused on promoting science and technology among young girls. We held workshops, inviting different speakers in the area of STEM to share their experiences and insights. These events educated us about the possibilities within STEM and also served as an avenue toward building a community among us. It was an empowering thing seeing women grow in areas where we are underrepresented. I took that to heart and made it a point to promise myself that I would do the same for others, ensuring that girls, most especially coming from similar backgrounds as mine, receive all the resources and encouragement they need to pursue their passions.
Among the significant issues that still persist in my academic journey is the financial constraints that arise. The higher tuition and cost of living weigh heavily on me; it's stressful and actually quite questionable in terms of my future. I have been trying to work part-time throughout my most intense school semesters, but it really has been a juggling act that wears me out and doesn't allow much time to take naps or get involved with extracurricular activities. In this vein, the Eric W. Larson STEM Scholarship would alleviate much of this burden by allowing me more time to focus on my studies and clinical experiences rather than the financial roadblocks. This support would finally give me the opportunity to further my education, undergo specialized training programs, and experience valuable life opportunities that would enable me to provide optimal care to my future patients.
This is not just about my influence on individual patient care but rather how I would affect the future as a neonatal nurse. I would wish to use my voice in furthering the creation of policies that would help families touched by addiction and mental health issues have better access to healthcare. Through active engagement with community entities and providers, I hope to develop programs that would increase awareness among parents regarding mental health and support mechanisms for addicted individuals. I also would like to be able to mentor young girls from under-resourced communities by serving as a role model and encouragement in the STEM and health sciences field. It is my hope that I am given the opportunity to be part of an equal employment opportunity health care provider so every child will have a chance at a healthy and nurturing start to life.
In short, my background shapes my aspirations: it inflames my passion for neonatal nursing and my commitment to the care of vulnerable populations. Overcoming financial adversities and addiction issues within my own family has made me even more strong-willed to bring about some positive change. Thus, receiving the Eric W. Larson STEM Scholarship would not only support my higher education but also enable me to achieve my goal of giving something back to society in positive ways through health. I am committed to continuing Eric W. Larson's spirit through the advocacy of diversity and equality within STEM fields, enabling future generations of color to come along and prosper.
Charles Cheesman's Student Debt Reduction Scholarship
I am proud of being a Hispanic first-generation college student. My journey through education has been both challenging and rewarding. Growing up, I have watched my parents make personal sacrifices which provided me with opportunities they never had. They instilled in me values such as hard work and being persistent; surely these are qualities that I lived by in doing my own thing. I would like to become a neonatal nurse with special emphasis on infant care whose parents are addicted. To me, this is not more than a career, but some sort of personal mission driven by experiences and a passion to touch vulnerable lives.
As a student at high school, I always volunteered in serving at a local hospital. It was there that I realized the impact compassionate care would have on a patient's life. Each family struggled emotionally and physically, being torn asunder by their pain, something which reminded me to reflect on my family's struggle with addiction. My father, who over many years has struggled with alcoholism, stands as a sober reminder of the support and intervention that families need when in the grip of substance abuse. This personal experience has driven me to help break the cycle of addiction and allow infants and their families to receive the much-needed care during critical times in their lives. Throughout my academic pursuit, I have always strived to ensure a high GPA while balancing part-time jobs to keep myself afloat. Currently, I attend school for my nursing degree, where I have excelled in my studies and further honed my patient care and advocacy skills. I actively serve through community initiatives, most of them consisting of organizing health fairs with a concentration on mental health and addiction awareness. This has allowed me to work directly with my community to work towards breaking down some of that stigma and bring more awareness to these essential issues.
The Charles Cheesman Student Debt Reduction Scholarship would significantly help alleviate the burden of financial stressors associated with my education. Tuition and living expenses are increasingly on the rise, and student debt seems insurmountable. This scholarship would allow me to devote more time to my studies and less to concerns about finances. I could then take more clinical opportunities that better enhance my training and experience. Additionally, it would allow me to save and invest in my future. I want to use that money to help alleviate my student loans so that I can graduate with less debt and a clearer trajectory toward financial independence. It will be a personal relief, allowing me the ability to continue giving back to my community through service and mentorship.
All in all, I am deeply committed to becoming a neonatal nurse and giving healing care to infants and families suffering from addiction. The Charles Cheesman Student Debt Reduction Scholarship would support my pursuit in making my dreams come true without having any financial burdens weigh me down. It is my desire to inspire others, and this scholarship would mean the opportunity for me to do so, while being sure that my focus is on pursuing excellence in my nursing career.
Amazing Grace Scholarship
Children of addiction face a life of ups and downs, carved out by the very identities that create their futures. In my case, having been born to an alcoholic father, I have felt the deepest influence of addiction from within. Having had him lose almost everything bit by bit-from his career to the relationships with family and friends-hasn't left my life unaffected. Yet, within the chaos and devastation, I found my purpose-bettering the addiction chain and committing the rest of my life to serving people bound by addiction, especially the most helpless of them all: infants born into addiction.
Growing up in a substance abuse-ridden family, alienated and perplexed was how I mostly felt. The emotional impact of my father's alcoholism was most vividly evident in the harshly fluctuating environments it created, which further instilled in me my desires for stability and guidance. I witnessed the turmoil of late-night arguments, the pervasive silence that followed, and lived in pervasive fear that our family would unravel at any moment. These experiences convinced me of the value of trauma as a personal struggle but also as an intergenerational one. I knew on the other hand that an addiction problem in my father did not have to be my life's destiny. I realized it was important to seek help and make sense of my own mental health. I gained many valuable coping skills through counseling and formed a loyal network of friends and mentors that helped guide me, encouraging me throughout my path. It is incredibly powerful to work towards healing, understand your feelings, and redefine what addiction means in your life.
The transformation has now geared my desire toward nursing, particularly in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. I want to be a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit nurse so that I can help babies addicted at birth and give them a good chance of survival. Such babies have been catapulted into living a life of problems they never chose, and I am going to be their advocate. I would like not only to provide the medical care needed but also to offer psychological support for their families, showing them the nuances in the vicious circle of addiction and recovery. For addiction to be overcome, one will have to take action on several fronts. In my efforts to become a nurse, I would continuously educate myself about addiction and its influence on families so that I can make sure I am prepared for advocating on behalf of their needs. I plan on pursuing this by collaborating with health teams to implement programs that educate new parents about the risks of addiction and resources for recovery. I also volunteer with organizations that support families affected by addiction, offering mentorship through my experiences to others who feel lost in similar situations.
Ultimately, while my father's addiction to alcohol shaped my life one way or another, it also helped me in my resolve to break the cycle of this addiction. I come to find through my journey of healing my calling to be a NICU nurse, taking care of the most helpless individuals in our society. I want to use my experiences to support, uplift, and inspire others so that a ripple of hope and healing can be created, indeed, empowering all children of addiction to create their paths toward recovery and success.
Healing Self and Community Scholarship
Mental health is important to overall well-being, but too many people struggle to get the care they need to live their healthiest lives-especially in BIPOC communities. I would further build a community-centered online platform that connects patients with local resources, such as therapists, support groups, and wellness programs. The intelligent use of technology to handle the user-friendly interface would allow clients to search through services according to their particular needs and situations on such a platform.
I would also make sure that access is as affordable as possible by partnering with mental health professionals, offering sliding scale fees, and pro-bono to anyone in financial distress. Additionally, there would be resources for education, workshops, and support groups via the website to help with mental wellness and further reduce stigma about people seeking out mental health services. Through community engagement, I seek to develop a platform that is supportive, where individuals share experiences, learn from one another, and acquire all the resources necessary in their mental health journey.
In short, my value addition to increasing access to mental health care would revolve around building a collaborative platform where people become connected with resources while growing in community support and understanding. With this, I also want to empower those in need and further a healthier, more inclusive society in which mental health care is a right and not a privilege.
Women in STEM Scholarship
My academic pursuits have always been governed by the pursuit of knowledge and the desire to service humanity. I am mostly drawn to pursuing a career in STEM through nursing, mainly because it is a male-dominated field. My interest in the technology of healthcare began at a tender age, whereby I read about technologies that would further enhance patient care and outcomes. All these activities, starting from extracurriculars and moving to coursework and internships, together bolstered my resolve for a career in nursing.
I chose nursing as my college major because I believe that the junction of health care with technology is the solution to most of the pressing challenges faced today. Nursing is a very unique opportunity to bring clinical skills together with advanced technology in a manner that opens better access and improved patient experiences. I'm particularly interested in the application of technology in improving patient education in health management, especially in underserved communities. This volunteer experience with local healthcare organizations has opened my eyes to the disparities in access to information and resources, and I am determined to leverage technology to bridge these gaps in care.
Being a woman in STEM, I understand full well what kind of different challenges one has to face while breaking down gender barriers. I have gone through many doubting and discriminating situations, be it in the classroom or during internships, but these experiences only added fuel to the fire of determination within me. I firmly believe that my presence in nursing will also inspire young women to pursue their dreams in STEM and show them their place in those spaces. Representation matters, and women need role models that can show them even when there are obstacles, women can be good at or even excel in STEM, such as nursing.
I am also going to work on making my future career as inclusive as possible. Mentoring younger women who have the dream of being in the nursing field will surely be one of my major life pursuits. I can guide and mentor these women through their education and professional lives. I just hope that by this kind of community, future generations will be empowered as women in STEM and unapologetically go after whatever they truly want. Being selected for the Learner's Annual Women in STEM Scholarship would have a profound impact on my educational journey. Financially, the scholarship would relieve a portion of tuition and educational expenses, allowing me to focus on studies and extracurricular involvement. This also goes a long way in being a testament to the fact that supporting women in STEM is important and would make me want to give back to the community that has supported my aspirations.
For this reason, I am committed to a career in nursing, not only for the gratification of my health aspiration but also for increased representation and empowerment of females within the streams of STEM subjects. Using my talents and skills, I look toward making a worthy difference in my community and the world at large. I am, therefore, excited by the prospects that the future holds and to be part of a movement that champions diversity and inclusion in the field of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Thank you for considering my application for the Learner's Annual Women in STEM Scholarship. I consider it a great milestone and stand ready to be actively involved in the continued struggle toward gender parity within the subjects of STEM while motivating younger generations toward their goals.
Eco-Warrior Scholarship
Living in this century, sustainability is the biggest concern for every living thing. Yet, I do feel that each one of us has the onus to bring about some change in our lifestyles to reduce our environmental footprint. Since my childhood, I have always been informed about taking good care of our planet; lately, however, I have made conscious decisions to stay on the path of sustainable living and reduce my carbon footprint. I believe that my actions may be small; however, this similar step by everybody, taken together, should make all the difference that is sorely needed.
The main ways in which I live sustainably are trying not to waste anything in everyday life. An example would be avoiding single-use plastics by using reusable water bottles, bags, and containers. Secondly, I try to shop in bulk and also prefer items that have minimal packaging. By using less plastic, it cuts down on not only waste going to landfills or oceans but also cuts down on energy used to make, transport, and dispose of these products. I also use sustainable transportation. Instead of using a car, I walk, bike, or take public transportation wherever possible. These alternatives are much healthier not only for the planet but also for me. Complementing these daily decisions, I have begun to support the utilization of renewable energy sources through switching over to an energy provider offering clean sources of energy, such as wind and solar powers. This enables me to contribute by reducing demand for fossil fuels, one of the biggest contributors to greenhouse gas emissions.
Sustainability goes further into the food choice I make. I have reduced my consumption of animal products and added more plant-based meals into my diet. Knowing that animal agriculture is among the top causes of deforestation, greenhouse gas emissions, and water use, by choosing more sustainable options, I'm helping to lessen my environmental impact. I also support the local farmers by buying produce directly from farmers' markets. This helps reduce the carbon footprint resulting from long-distance transportation and at the same time helps keep the economy of the locals moving. I'm concerned about my carbon footprint because, first of all, I understand that the consequences of climate change will be long-lasting. As temperatures go higher, ecosystems are degraded, natural calamities become more common, and poor communities worldwide suffer disproportionately. I do hope my sustainable choices can somehow contribute toward making a healthier planet and influence other people's choices to be sustainable.
I believe that living sustainably is not just a question of choices to be made for the present but about ensuring a future whereby future generations would have access to clean air, water, and natural resources. Individuals' efforts may seem so minute against climate change as a global problem; nevertheless, small, sustained endeavors across many people can turn out to be widespread change. Everything we are doing to be sustainable counts and by reducing our carbon footprints, we are causing less harm to our planet. Receiving this scholarship would enable me to support my goals in sustainability while pursuing a higher education. I want to take this education and use it to further environmental policy and support those working for the betterment of the health of our planet. By living sustainably now, I feel that I am taking a first step toward becoming a lifelong advocate for environmental justice and conservation.
Hines Scholarship
More than just the pursuit of a degree, college for me represents the opportunity to break the generational cycle of monetary struggles and offer my family and community a legacy to hold onto. Coming from a minority background, I have seen how real the obstacles that stand in the way of so many bright young minds reaching their true potential are because of financial hindrances, lack of access to resources, or systemic inequities. A college education opens the door to rising above such issues and building a future wherein I could be of significance to others.
It will open up doors that were once closed and provide me with career opportunities I wouldn't otherwise have without the benefit of higher learning. Beyond this, it will provide me with the knowledge and skills to be an advocate for under-represented communities and work toward a more just and equitable society. For many students from minority groups, the pursuit of higher education is not an individual ambition but rather a path toward creating an impact on society by bridging the racial wealth gap and breaking a continuous circle of poverty for future generations.
In my case, the opportunity to pursue a degree in nursing, specifically neonatal nursing, represents a unique opportunity to connect my passion for healthcare with my desire to help the most vulnerable members of society. After my brother's birth incident, in which he was born prematurely and taken to NICU, the inspiration to be a neonatal nurse practitioner emerged. It opened my eyes to see how important merciful special care is for infants and families. I hope my studies will equip me with the needed skill in providing quality health care and furthering my advocacy for accessible health care to the underserved populations. Attending college for higher education has a greater meaning than just building a career in health; it means being part of a social movement. Being a minority student, I often think that my success will mean avenue openings for other students coming from the same background. I can give back to my community by inspiring others to pursue higher education and showing them it is possible with determination and the right support.
My college education will also present the opportunity for me to contribute to healthcare reform. I would like my career to progress in a manner that ensures health care access and equity for the underserved populations of our country. Whether through policy or patient care, I am committed to making healthcare more equitable for all. Ultimately, college attendance is more than having a piece of paper with a degree on it; it is fulfilling my desire to give back to society, make a difference, and help those in need. This scholarship would help overcome financial barriers preventing me from pursuing my educational goals and bring me closer to achieving my dream of becoming a neonatal nurse practitioner.
Dr. C.L. Gupta Young Scholars Award
Raised in a poor family, I knew pretty well the values of hard work and persistence. My parents were always telling me that education, even on a slim budget, was the answer to all ills. Yet, money has always been an issue in my academic pursuits. There had been one point in my life where it felt like going to college was impossible as the cost of rising higher kept on piling up. However, I was determined to do very well in academics, believing and fighting my adversities to achieve my dream.
High school posed several problems for me: financial and emotional. I had to work different jobs to help my family and balance between jobs and grades. Despite this struggle, I was able to thrive academically by receiving an ACT score of 32 with the usual load of classes in honors courses, including AP Computer Science Principles, AP World History, AP Human Geography, AP Statistics, AP English Language, AP English Literature, and AP U.S. Government. Proving both quite challenging, yet rewarding in nature; they challenged me to develop a great ability for critical thinking and a work ethic that will no doubt serve me well later on in my career. From standardized test performances to my commitment to challenging course loads, my academic achievements speak volumes to my drive and ambition. Despite adversity, I have always viewed education as the most compelling tool at my disposal, as it creates lasting change not only in one's circumstances but also in the world.
Where the future is concerned, my career objective is to be able to obtain a position as a neonatal nurse practitioner specializing in premature and critically ill babies. This passion came through personal experiences that shaped me to help others. My younger brother, born prematurely and having spent time in the NICU, the care he received by dedicated professionals drove the desire in me to pursue a career in nursing. I would love to give back by providing this care to the most vulnerable patients, and I am committed to helping ensure every child gets a healthy start in life. However, this desire for higher learning has come at a very expensive cost. I do not have any sort of financial support from my family, since I am the first in their lineage to ever attend college. This scholarship would take off so much of the tuition and living stresses, and I will be able to work on my studies and personal development with much ease. It would grant me the opportunity to continue my education without the nagging concerns of how the next semester would be financed.
I am looking forward to being able to give back to my community in the future by facilitating accessible healthcare to underserved populations. I will be committed to the usage of my education and skills in making life better for others, and I also promise to advocate for policies that can give equality to healthcare policies. Becoming a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner satisfies my personal goals; it contributes to the betterment of society by serving those in need. The Dr. Chaman L. Gupta Scholarship would go a long way toward helping me achieve this career goal and further my dream of leaving a mark in this world to remember. It will stand as a testament that, sure, I face many challenges, but it can help one climb the ladder of success with persistence and perseverance.
Hilliard L. "Tack" Gibbs Jr. Memorial Scholarship
First-generation college student that I am, my love for science is an interest kindled by a deep curiosity into the world and a yearning to contribute, through research and discovery, to the betterment of others. I had grown up in numerous financial and educational impediments, but I had never lost sight of my dream to pursue a career in the sciences. My whole life has been filled with fascination about the way everything works from the tiny aspects of the human body to the vast ecosystems of our Earth. This scholarship would give me the opportunity to continue my education in a field that makes me excited and inspired every day.
I want to attain a biology degree to become a neonatal nurse so that I will be able to combine my love for science with my passion for caring about others. This is the area of concentration I have chosen because of personal experience: my brother spent time in the NICU immediately following his birth. The personal experience also showed me the commitment and professionalism of the doctors and other medics attending to him, which I was greatly impressed with, as it attracted me to dedicating my entire life serving the most helpless patients. A biology degree will provide me with a broad understanding of the complexities of human development and neonatal health to set the stage for specialized training in the field.
Upon graduation, I hope to continue my education in nursing, with the ultimate goal being to obtain a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner degree. I would like to be directly involved in the NICU and to be part of the support team for families during such overwhelming moments by providing optimum care for sick newborns. It has been my ambition not only to practice but also to be an advocate for improved practices in neonatal care and to take part in related research that helps improve patient outcomes. I believe that each and every child born deserves a healthy start in life, and due to their sheer existence, I am deeply committed to making a tangible difference through my education and skill acquisition.
This scholarship will contribute greatly towards the easing of financial pressure, which is involved with undertaking higher education, allowing me to focus on my studies and develop the necessary skills to enter the workforce. As a low-income student, this scholarship availability means a lot to me in terms of continuing this work toward my goals. It would not only help in my academic journey but also remind me of the generosity of those who believe in the students like me to make a difference in the world of science and health care. This is an opportunity that brings me one step closer to the realization of my dreams, a great avenue through which I can make a difference in other people's lives.
GUTS- Olivia Rodrigo Fan Scholarship
One of my most resonating lyrics, deep into my teenage experience, is from Olivia Rodrigo's GUTS: "I used to think I was smart, but you made me look so naïve." This line enlivens the feeling of vulnerability and self-doubt that is encased in much of one's experience throughout adolescence. It speaks to those moments when we come to a realization that our sense of control or understanding of the world is much more fragile than previously perceived. This is a lyric that speaks for me because of how some painful break-ups bruised my heart and ego.
Throughout my adolescence, I was so proud of being an emotionally mature teenager; an advising friend, a confident student always at the challenges, a daughter who seemed to have everything under her control. At 17, I had gotten into my first serious relationship, which, as with any teenager, thought I knew it all. My world was shattered when the object of my desire betrayed me. It wasn't heartbreak over the loss of a loved one but about myself being a naive fool, having faith in people so quickly and easily. The lyrics "you made me look so naïve" only mirrored my inner voice-one that questioned my judgment and, ultimately, my self-worth.
That is what makes Olivia Rodrigo's music so relatable to young people like me: she really represents teenage emotions. All the confusion, all the emotional rollercoaster, all the self-reflection-that is growing up. Adulthood is often idealized as a frivolous time of discovery, but GUTS does capture the raw reality: it's a time where you are literally constantly figuring out who you are, who you wanna be, and what it means to trust others-then you usually just get let down anyway. Rodrigo's lyrics remind listeners it's OK not to have things figured out all the time-or maybe even often-feel too big, because everyone feels that way.
And so, insecurity and doubt are inevitable afterward, and I needed to address them. By then, I had also learned that my identity was wrapped up in someone else's approval. Rodrigo's lyric created space for me to think through how I'd desired to be seen as "smart" or "mature," and how those desires allowed me to overlook red flags. I wanted so desperately to be seen as the person who has everything figured out that I stopped trusting my instincts when something did not feel quite right. GUTS has been cathartic for me. I simply felt so validated hearing that record and working through some of the emotions going on. Through Rodrigo's music, I came to understand that naivety is not a weakness but part of learning and growth. Adolescence is just all about those moments of doubt, really, yet those happen to be the times constituting who we become.
When I think of that lyric now, naivete does not make me ashamed; it makes me feel it was a part of my journey. Rodrigo's words have taught me that along the way, there is going to be great vulnerability and mistakes. The lessons learned from heartbreak and disappointment are just as crucial as the ones we learn in school or through some cool accomplishment. It teaches us resiliency, but more importantly, it teaches us about ourselves. GUTS by Olivia Rodrigo is more than an album-it's a statement to the emotional depths of a teenager. It's the anthem of every teen trying to make sense of everything facing him or her while growing up, and gave me the courage to just let things be and move on, knowing full well what I'm truly made of.
Leave A Legacy Always Scholarship
My name is Victoria, and I come with deep commitment to neonatal nursing-a field where every day offers the chance to make a big difference in the lives of the tiniest patients. Growing up and being inspired by my father's commitment to serving in the Navy instilled an immeasurable drive within me toward giving care in critical situations. His perseverance and sacrifice taught me the meaning of service and resilience, which influenced me to choose a career that would enable me to give back meaningfully to the healthcare system. I am now focused on the goal of becoming a neonatal nurse and will do everything possible to help the most helpless members of our society-newborn babies who need specialized care. This scholarship is not only much-needed financial aid but is an important stepping stone toward fulfilling my dream of making a tangible impact in the NICU, where my dedication to compassionate care and medical excellence can truly flourish.
Neonatal nursing is not a profession, but a call to serve deeply rooted in life experiences. In my case, it was at the birth of my brother, when complications placed him in the NICU, that I realized just how important truly dedicated neonatal nurses can be to the infant and their family. This experience instilled in me a similar passion in life to nurture these critically ill newborns with compassion and knowledge. Currently, I am pursuing a nursing degree with neonatal care as my focus. My studies and clinical experiences will be geared toward NICU preparation, both for managing complex medical conditions and offering emotional support to the families. The education will provide me with active contributions toward the provision of neonatal care, ensuring that every infant receives the best care and support possible. As a neonatal nurse in the future, I am committed to creating significant differences in several ways. First and foremost, I look forward to offering exceptional and personalized newborn care and family care. I will apply my knowledge of current advances in neonatal health to implement best practices and continually improve patient outcomes. This includes the provision of high-quality, individualized care so that every infant can have the best possible start to life. Importantly, this also includes educating and supporting families through the emotional and practical challenges associated with having a critically ill newborn. I try to render as much comprehensive support as possible regarding guidance, education, and emotional matters to the families while going through this stressful period of life. I will lighten their burdens by creating a collaborative, supportive care environment that empowers them toward confident facing of challenges in the future.
Moreover, I am passionate enough to contribute to policy formulation and advocacy affecting neonatal care. Through research and active involvement in policy discussions, I hope to influence healthcare policies aimed at improving the standards of care, resource access, and support systems for neonatal units. I am motivated to contribute through wide-ranging systemic change that will benefit the individual patients and overall healthcare systems. In addition to my work within the hospital, I am committed to community involvement. What I actually plan to do is outreach programs that increase awareness on neonatal health. Educating expectant parents and caregivers on how to attend to neonates will minimize complications and result in better outcomes for infants, thereby contributing positively to society as a whole. My desire to study and practice neonatal nursing emanates from very close personal experiences and the values instilled within my family. For instance, I grew up with an admiration for my father's commitment to service and his humility even in the face of adversity. His commitment to work and ability to overcome challenges inspired me to have a similar drive for my career, but with compassion. As a first-generation college student, I have had to find the balance between academic demands and personal responsibilities. Such experiences taught me how to become resilient and manage my time wisely-both essential in building my neonatal nursing career path. Further, my volunteer work in support of healthcare initiatives and families has only strengthened this goal toward being helpful in the field.
This is a personal journey to neonatal nursing that is deeply connected with personal experience and deep commitment towards bringing a change in the life of a vulnerable newborn and his family. My dad serves in the Navy, and this commitment to service, along with all the values of dedication, resilience, and selfless service, has been an inspiration throughout my career. I learned from this kind of challenge he experienced, and the sacrifices, the importance of persisting and showing compassionate care during the crisis. More than the money, the scholarship represents an investment in my future and a crucial step in realizing my career goals. It will give me the opportunity to pursue the relevant education and training that would make a difference in the NICU to provide for those in need with the best care possible. Because of this support, I am dedicated to continuing my father's legacy through my work to help the well-being of newborns and their families advance so that each and every child can begin as healthy as possible. I aspire to inspire and elevate others, not only by contributing to the field of neonatal nursing but also by showing compassion and excellence in work. This scholarship will provide me with the opportunity to turn my vision into reality-an avenue toward a future where I will be able to make a difference in the health community and be one of its building blocks for the betterment of our next generation.
Mental Health Importance Scholarship
The psychological well-being of an individual is one of the building blocks of his health and academic success even at college, where students are introduced to new environments and sometimes very stringent challenges. In my perspective, maintaining mental health is quite crucial in handling the demands of college life effectively and developing personally. Experiences I have had have pointed toward the importance of mental health and influenced strategies toward sustaining it.
The first day of college brought multiple mixes of feelings: excitement and uncertainty. I faced many responsibilities and being social around people-situations that are too often overwhelming. Early on, I realized overlooking mental health can affect not only academic performance but also personal happiness and relationships. Thus, this realization gave me the impetus to focus on mental wellness as an integral component of my college experience. One of the major ways I do this involves mindfulness and self-care. I have implemented daily mindfulness exercises into my routine, such as meditation and deep-breathing techniques, to help me deal with stressors and keep me centered. Such practices have been priceless in helping me pass through the pressures of college life and maintaining a balanced perspective. Moreover, I try to work out regularly by either running or attending an aerobics class. Physical activity may improve one's overall mental condition: it triggers endorphin release and reduces anxiety.
Another significant part of maintaining mental health involves finding support when needed. I am actively seeking out and using available campus resources: counseling services and support groups. These services enable me to talk through my emotional challenges with a counselor or discuss issues in a group and learn new ways of coping. I keep in close contact with friends and family. Staying socially connected can provide emotional support and a sense of belonging. Beyond personal strategies, I strongly believe in the development of a collegiate atmosphere that would favor mental health. I have participated in organizing events for awareness about mental health and workshops on campus that work toward reducing stigma and helping students be better equipped to manage their mental well-being. I would like to help create a culture that values and supports the mental health of all students by facilitating open discussions about mental health.
This scholarship is in line with my commitment to mental health because it recognizes an enterprise that addresses and cares for mental wellness during the college experience. Such an award would provide additional resources for further delving and personal promotion of mental health initiatives in the community. I conclude that mental health is an important key to overall success and well-being, especially in college students who are introduced to new challenges. I practice mindfulness, seek support, and raise awareness about mental health in efforts to maintain my mental well-being and support others in doing the same. This scholarship would be a great asset in continuing to prioritize mental health and creating a positive impact within the college community.

An original first-generation, low-income student without the support structures of parents or family members who have gone through higher education, I have thus far managed to steer my way through complexities. It was the difficult journey of balancing academic rigor with less-than-adequate finances that only fueled a fire within me for success and an opportunity to make a difference. This scholarship represents an opportunity key in fostering my pursuit of these important educational and career goals, allowing me to continue without the burden of financial barriers hindering my progress.
My father brought me up with so much love and resilience from a young age after my mother was away for a long period. He is a dedicated Navy servant and has always been my mentor, teaching me to be strong when everything was going against me. From him, I learned how to set goals and keep focusing on them, notwithstanding the ups and downs that life had thrown at me. My father had grown up with my family's financial problems and emotional strife, yet never for a single day did he allow me to give up on my dreams; he taught me the essence of hard work and education. His sacrifices have been a potent motivator in achieving academic excellence and making an impact in the future at whatever capacity that I can help others meaningfully.
I am currently pursuing my nursing degree to become a neonatal nurse practitioner. This pathway is very much influenced by a personal experience that involved my younger brother, who had to stay in the NICU after his birth. The care and expertise of the nurses who looked after him further inspired me to commit my life to providing similar support to vulnerable patients. Academic performance has reflected my commitment, as I maintained a GPA of 3.6 while being actively involved in extra-curricular activities such as volunteering at local health clinics and being part of the pre-nursing club at my college.
This scholarship would go a long way in offsetting the costs of tuition and other education-related expenses. It would give me ample time for studies and clinical exposure, rather than having to work for extended hours just to pay for educational expenses. The financial assistance provided by this scholarship would also provide opportunities for specialized training and attending conferences, which are important in professional development yet tough due to the costs involved.
Beyond academics, this scholarship would allow me to continue my commitment to extracurricular activities and volunteer work, activities that are vital in gaining hands-on experiences and contributing to the community in which I live. In this way, continuing participation in these activities has given me very valuable experience and insight; I'm hence committed to the extension of these activities, so I could be better prepared for a career in neonatal nursing.
In essence, this scholarship represents so much more than an issue of simple award money; it is a means to reach my academic and professional goals. Indeed, I will be able to devote myself fully to academics with the help of your support and make further strides toward my aspirations of becoming a neonatal nurse practitioner. I am deeply committed to using my education to contribute positively to the healthcare field and as a way of honoring the sacrifices my family has made. Receiving this scholarship would be an important part of helping me make that commitment a reality.
Catrina Celestine Aquilino Memorial Scholarship
It is under the legacy of Catrina Celestine Aquilino that I am spurred onto a career in health. She was at the forefront for justice and created changes in communities-morals that are not foreign to me. I am a first-generation college student majoring in nursing, hoping to become a neonatal nurse practitioner. My motivation to enter this area is influenced by a personal experience that shaped my understanding of the effect of healthcare. When my younger brother was born prematurely, he had to spend much time in the NICU and required extensive care. The art of tender and skilled care that he received inspired me to devote my life to supporting the most vulnerable patients.
Catrina exemplified how commitment and compassion can bridge gaps in the way to make meaningful change-qualities I try to live by in my career. Like Catrina, who made it her life's mission to ensure justice was available to people irrespective of a person's background, I am committed to ensuring that quality health care is accessible to all families, but most especially to the underserved communities. This is where my commitment shall lie in advocating for practices and policies that enhance neonatal care and provide the needed support to such families in those critical moments.
Knowing this, I intend to utilize both my academic knowledge and practical experiences to make this goal happen. I will update myself with current information on neonatal-related advances through research and clinical practice. I also want to volunteer for any organizations that work on NICU family support to ensure that I give directly to the community I serve. I will be able to make a difference in neonatal nursing through awareness of the latest medical technologies and techniques, and by supporting policies to further improve patient care. I also believe in lifelong learning and cultural competence for any health professional. Like Catrina, who spoke multiple languages and worked with diverse cultures, I understand the need to be knowledgeable in multiple backgrounds and perspectives that could afford me opportunities to serve a wider population. This includes knowledge of cultural practices and barriers, influencing approaches to care and health outcomes that make certain that I provide empathetic and effective care for all patients.
In all, my aspirations in healthcare are both stirred up by the commitment to justice that Catrina Celestine Aquilino has and her striving to make sure she makes a difference in this world. Through the career of a neonatal nurse practitioner, I hope to be able to follow in the path that she has set before me and continue making positive improvements in this world so that every family in need can receive high-quality, compassionate care. This scholarship will further enable me to pursue these objectives and carry on Catrina's legacy, at the same time making a meaningful contribution to the field of healthcare.
John Young 'Pursue Your Passion' Scholarship
I am inspired to embark on this nursing career, whereby the legacy of John Young drove the desire to make an advanced difference in people's lives. Similar to Young's transition from being a fighter pilot to an aerospace engineer who contributed groundbreaking feats, my journey is driven by commitment to bringing together my passion for healthcare with a vision for transformative impact.
Growing up, the experiences my family faced with regard to health really hit a nerve. My little brother was born prematurely and spent critical time in the NICU. It was the arduous and caring behavior of the nurses taking care of my baby brother that set fire to my ambition to become a neonatal nurse practitioner one day. Their effect on both the medical and emotional aspects, when one is at his most vulnerable, was what really touched me. This experience instilled in me the appreciation of how competent and sensitive caregivers make a great difference in the lives of their patients and those patients' families.
I am motivated to become a nurse in order to give something big back to this field, especially neonatology. I want to extend my services and compassion to people just like I experienced it with my brother and my family. As a neonatal nurse practitioner, I would want to focus on specializations that are most crucial to the improvement of outcomes in premature and critically ill infants. My aspiration is to be at the vanguard in neonatal advanced care and advocate for practices that will ensure the survival of the patients as well as the quality of life.
These will all be accomplished through the excel lence of my academic studies and hands-on experience through clinical practice. I hope to participate in research opportunities that further neonatal care, familiarize myself with state-of-the-art medical technologies and techniques, and also participate in the mentoring of future health professionals and the advancement of policies that support NICU families for the betterment of all patient care.
Supported by my faith in perseverance and compassion, this drive to practice has now become the motivation toward my professional aspiration. My father, who was in the Navy, was raised under very tough conditions; he had to handle many things. From him, I learned strength and commitment. It taught me to remain determined in my career. Blending hard scientific knowledge with compassionate care is likely to be what contributes most meaningfully to changing healthcare.
Basically, the reason I chose nursing as a career is in fulfillment of an innate desire to give something to society, inspired by John Young's example and my life experiences. I commit to pursuing a career enabling me to serve, assure quality care, and support both patients and their families. This scholarship will further enable me to continue working toward my professional goals, making a difference in the lives of those for whom I care, and building upon the legacy of those individuals who have inspired me.
Harvest Achievement Scholarship
I'm a focused and motivated individual who has the passion to contribute toward changing the world through nursing. Being the first generation of college students in my family, I've valued education and opportunity since I was a child. Because of so many difficulties while growing up, I learned to be resilient and able to take responsibility and persevere. These experiences have shaped me into the person I am today and have further driven my need to be in a nursing position where I can provide help and contribute positively to society. I have always found accountability to be a cornerstone in my personal and academic success. To me, accountability is defined as taking responsibility for my actions, decisions, and their outcomes, be they good or bad. It's being honest to myself and others, accepting my mistakes, and learning from these mistakes. During this academic journey, holding myself responsible involves setting clear goals, managing time well, and being committed to my studies. Success, in my understanding, is not only about good grades; it's the effort that one invests into education.
One way I've practiced accountability is through reflection on the progress made, assessing my strong points and weaknesses. I set both short-term and long-term goals for myself, then mold them into easier tasks to accomplish. This helps me stay focused and motivated and may even help me track my progress over time. When faced with failure or disappointments, it was important that I took the time to assess where things went wrong and what I could have done differently next time. These processes of self-reflection and continuous improvement were quite instrumental in bringing me to where I am today. Not only do I hold myself accountable, but I'm also a strong believer in supporting and uplifting others, especially other women. It's during my whole academic career that I've actively been involved in mentoring programs and volunteer work associated with empowering the young woman. This is through mentoring high school girls that have an interest in healthcare careers by providing guidance, support, and encouragement. All these experiences not only have enabled me to serve my community, but they also strengthened my belief in the power of mentorship and the importance of helping others reach their goals.
My commitment to accountability and passion for helping others have been strong guiding factors in my success. First, I sought out higher learning in nursing, understanding how that could help me succeed both academically and clinically during internships and volunteer work. These have definitely ingrained a desire into my heart to serve in an underserved community and help institute some sort of change in the lives of those around me. For that reason, I'll keep myself accountable throughout my personal and professional life. I'm committed to using my skills and knowledge in a manner that reflects compassion in care for my patients and advances health equity and social justice. I believe through this, it would be easier to keep with my values and accountability and thus achieve my goals of contributing to the collective success of the woman in my community and elsewhere.
Accountability has been a pedestal through which I have become what I am in terms of education and career building. Well, it involves taking responsibility for my actions, learning from my mistakes, and always striving to become better, which is how one achieves success and changes others for good. I look forward to continuing my journey in nursing and being able to utilize my experiences and skill set as a means of uplifting and empowering other women within my career and community.
Nikhil Desai Reinventing Healthcare Scholarship
If I had to change one thing pertaining to American healthcare, it would be a move to extend universal healthcare to underserved and marginalized populations. The current US healthcare system relies very heavily on private insurance. It leaves many people without decent coverage or having large amounts of expenses out-of-pocket. This system creates disparities in access to care based on socioeconomic status, geographic location, and even based on racial and ethnic background. A universal healthcare system ensures that everyone-irrespective of individual variables-receives the required care.
Impliedly, the inequality in the American health care system is gross, and the implementation of universal health would reduce this gross inequality to a minimum. Most of the individuals living in deprived communities cannot afford to see primary physicians or specialists, or basic health care services because of lack of insurance or area constraints having less availability of facilities. This will be addressed in universal health care through providing coverage for all, thereby reducing the financial barriers in access to care.
A universal health care system might further allow for better resource allocation. Much is presently spent under current arrangements on administrative costs to manage various insurance plans and price negotiation. In a single-payer system, this cost of administration would greatly be reduced; resources that could be used to improve patient care and invest in public health initiatives. The whole health system would be more efficient and ensure resources are distributed in a way that provides value to all patients, not just the ones who could afford the best insurance plans.
This would also make the case for universal health care, which could provide a greater thrust to preventive care-replacing curative care- something that is of essence in maintaining public health good while reducing health costs over a long time. Due to the fear of costs, many are not seeking medical care under the current system until they are seriously ill; thus, leading to poor health outcomes and higher costs since advanced diseases are usually more expensive to treat than stopping them before they start. Such a universal healthcare system, covering as many preventive services as possible, would make people more apt to seek an early checkup, thus improving health outcomes and decreasing the overall cost.
Besides, universal health would create a much fairer health environment, which would reduce disparities in care based on race, ethnicity, or income. It has also been proven through several studies that quality care for people from subjugated groups was always poorer, just as their outcomes regarding health were also worse, when compared to people with more privileged status. Moving into a universal health system would level the field by allowing all people, irrespective of their background, to have access to the same quality of service.
I also hope to include my aspiration to practice a career in nursing with underserved communities and health equity. I strongly believe that universal health care is the essential step toward that end. Removing all financial obstacles to care and assuring that everyone gets the services they need will allow us to realize a healthcare system that actually serves all individuals-despite circumstance. But fundamentally, universal health care would represent a paradigm shift in how we look at and deliver health care in this country. It would prioritize the health and well-being of all individuals over profits of private insurance companies. With universal health care, we can have a more fair and just health system for all our citizens.
Future Leaders Scholarship
During the summer before entering college, I worked at a local pool as a lifeguard. It was a job that required vigilance, quick decisions, and great responsibility. But one day, it would also require me to step into an unanticipated leadership role.
Our lead lifeguard was to be in charge of organizing rotations for the lifeguard stands and the management of the team. Unexpectedly, he called in to say that he had to leave for the day due to a family emergency. Adding insult to injury, a few lifeguards had also called in sick. At the very opening of the pool, we were short of staff. No concrete plan was laid out; it was then clear that without someone taking the lead, the pool was not able to operate safely that day.
Realizing the direness, I knew I had to act fast. Knowing I needed a good rotation schedule so that everything in the pool would be taken care of to keep all our patrons safe, I did some calling around with other lifeguards that were not on the schedule, asking them if they could come in. I was able to round up a few more guards after a couple of rapid phone calls, providing us with some wiggle room. I then examined the stand rotation currently in use and realized it would not work for the few staff on hand. In an instant, I worked out a new rotation that would cover all the critical spots, meaning some of us would have to pull longer shifts on the stands. Then I gathered the rest of the lifeguards together and explained the new plan. I made sure everyone knew their role and how key it was to stay vigilant, in particular considering our reduced numbers.
We ironed it out by the time the pool opened to the public. I spent the rest of the day double-checking with other guards surrounding me, making sure nobody needed coverage or if any changes in scheduling needed to be made. Even with that ugly start, we kept everything just smooth, most importantly, safe.
That was a defining moment because, under pressure, I was put into a leading position. I knew then that even though one is not in an official leading position, sometimes it is necessary to rise up to occasions when nobody else will. At that moment, it was the only way to bring order into chaos, to keep safe the people present in the pool that day.
These are the skills I developed from the experience: acting on instinct, communicating effectively, and working in a team. Such scenarios occur in health care when a situation can change in a split second; rapid decision-making and good leadership are crucial in order to maintain patient safety. I will apply the skills that I have refined, such as organizing under pressure and leading a team, to establishing a calm and safe environment for patients and colleagues alike.
I always work towards being that nurse who can offer quality care and at the same time elicit confidence and trust from others by encouraging teamwork and effective communication. This scholarship would afford me an opportunity to continue to develop these crucial skills in my pursuit of serving others with meaningfulness and impact.

Truth is an abstract, multi-dimensional concept-especially when perceived through the prism of experience, faith, and the Bible. The expression "my truth" is popularly used at the turn of the twenty-first century. What it really means, though, is that something pertains to one's personal experiences, feelings, and perceptions. It speaks of the subjective knowledge of reality brought about by a unique life journey and is deeply molded in culture, upbringing, and personal values.
From a biblical perspective, however, there does exist "our truth" and "God's truth." Man's truth is subjective and relative to each person. It is conditioned by our emotions, our perspective, and life situations. By contrast, "God's truth" is objective; it doesn't change, nor does it shift from situation to situation. Quite simply, it reflects the nature and character of God. That is exactly what the Bible claims: God's truth cannot be and will not be changed by human whims, but it is permanent over time, culture, and personal experiences.
The clearest articulation of God's truth in the Bible Christians believe to be inspired from God. Jesus Himself speaks into the nature of the truth as recorded in John 14:6, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me." This verse portrays that truth is not an abstract concept within Christianity but a person in the form of Jesus Christ. It is through Him that believers are able to discern the truth from God. This is further supported in the book of John 17:17, where Jesus says in prayer, "Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth." By doing so, Jesus refers to the Bible as the Word of God and as such the only real truth, which in turn sanctifies and guides believers.
The Bible's truth is God's revealed truth to man. It is considered by many to be divinely inspired and the source upon which Christian faith and practice are built. Through the Bible, teachings, commandments, and examples provide guidelines to believers on the ways of living a life pleasing to God. 2 Timothy 3:16-17 says, "All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work." The above verse really brings out the point that the Bible is the inspired, authoritative source of God's truth which equips and guides believers through their walk.
Not only is the immediate context of the biblical scripture important, but the cultural and historical contexts in which the Bible was written are also quite crucial in arriving at the proper understanding of God's truth. The Bible cuts through many centuries, reflecting various cultures with multiple authors inspired by God. It is thus incumbent that Christians should engage in studying the Bible carefully, taking into consideration its historical and cultural contexts, in order to come up with proper understanding and contemporary applications.
"Our truth," "God's truth," and the "truth of the Bible" all describe the particular aspects of reality. "Our truth" is personal and subjective; "God's truth" is absolute and unchanging. The Bible, as inspired Word of God, is the means by which Christians come to know God's truth. It will be through a study of Scripture and an increased understanding of God's Word, rather than individual understandings of it, that the lives of believers can be brought into a closer correspondence with His truth to embrace the eternal truth which God has revealed to humanity.
Endeavor Public Service Scholarship
I am interested in a career of public service, as that gives me the opportunity to make positive differences in other people's lives. In this case, I could contribute much to my community by making sure that opportunities and services will become available to everybody for improving their quality of life. All my life, I have been motivated by the commitment and determination of people in public service in improving public health, developing community programs, and responding in case of an emergency. They might be out of sight, but their work improves life.
My commitment to public service evolved from my childhood experiences of living in a community plagued by difficulties in accessing basic health and education services. Firsthand, I faced the struggle of my neighbors, friends, and family, whose livelihoods depended on accessibility to basic services through some complicated systems. These experiences formed my sense of the importance of public service and motivated me to pursue a career whereby I can help bridge these gaps and provide more equal opportunity for all.
Presently, I am pursuing a degree in nursing, learning not only the technical skills required to give quality care but also the importance of compassion, communication, and advocacy that must be part of healthcare service. As a nurse, I would directly be working with patients and their family members and accordingly can provide the required basic care and support to them. Neonatal nursing area attracts me because this area empowers me to establish a touching contact with most helpless of all patients: the just-born baby that needs special attention in the earliest stages of life. Apart from my focus on neonatal nursing, I also plan to utilize my skills for public health development in my community.
I am passionate about developing programs that will improve healthcare service delivery to underserved populations. Through this career, I wish to work on developing programs that enhance preventive care and health education, reducing health disparities. I would like to work in collaboration with community organizations, health care providers, and policy makers in the design and implementation of programs that meet the peculiar needs of my community, giving everybody an opportunity to maintain healthy and productive lives. Moreover, I am committed to improving educational opportunities in my community. I find education to be a powerful tool for social change, and every child deserves equal opportunities for quality education, regardless of the background or situations he or she goes through in life. I will apply these program evaluation and community engagement skills to develop afterschool programs, mentorship opportunities, and scholarship initiatives supporting students in achieving their academic and career goals.
Ultimately, I want to be that catalyst-creating change in my community through service via nursing and public service. I am determined to take the skills and knowledge acquired from my education and create programs and policies that will appeal to the needs of those who get overlooked. I hope to make a lasting difference in the lives of others through a career in public service and nursing to build a more inclusive and equitable prosperous community for all.
Brandon M. Greber Memorial Scholarship
Since my childhood, I have always known the important role of the military in my life because my father served in the United States Navy. I always admired his commitment to our country with devotion and bravery. I was able to see him while I grew up as he made sacrifices and how it takes much bravery for him to defend our nation's values and freedoms. Through it all, I learned by watching my father serve and grew to love the military as well as those committing themselves to it. That respect has deeply influenced my desire to join the military as a naval nurse.
To me, the military is more than just an organization; it represents a commitment to something greater than oneself. It is honor, courage, and selflessness all rolled into one. To defend our nation is to defend the notions of freedom, justice, and equality that define us as a people. It is to put others' needs before our own, ensuring those ideals carry on for generations to come. Growing up, I remember my dad becoming close to other members serving with him and how they came to one another's aid in times of hardship. Their commitment actually influenced me and made me want to become a part of something greater, larger, and with such people.
I can merge my passion for helping others with serving in the military by being a naval nurse. Since I had always been fascinated with the medical field, nurses' involvement in providing compassionate care has captured my heart. I see, in the Navy, an opportunity that affords me the ability to contribute to those serving by ensuring the best care possible, be it in peacetime or in conflict. This enables me to give back to those who sacrifice for our country and directly participate in maintaining health and readiness in our armed forces.
My motivation comes from trying to make a difference in other people's lives. My father's service in the Navy taught me about dedication, sacrifice, and taking care of others. Through him, I learned a lot and these values instilled in me the urge to get on to a track in life for the betterment of others. I would like to be able to offer care and comfort as a naval nurse to the men and women who so courageously serve our country and to help them in their growth toward being able to do their job.
Philippians 2:4 says, "Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also the interests of others." This epitomizes to me the sense of service. By pursuing a career as a naval nurse, I am promising myself to a life of service-for my country, those that protect it, and those that need care and compassion. This path enables me to continue in the place of my dad's memories and the sacrifices all serving members have had to make toward the mission of protecting our country and the tenets this nation stands for.
Linda McCoy-Aitkens Memorial Scholarship
If I had to go back to my childhood, one question I really wish adults in my life could have asked more often would go like this: "How are you, really? " Quite often, my feelings when I was growing up were ignored or dismissed. Adults around me were mainly concerned with my performance at school, my behavior, and my responsibilities rather than how I felt inside my head and my heart.
It often felt as though my feelings were irrelevant; it made me feel like my worth was based on nothing other than my achievements and how well I could handle my duties.
Growing up as a child in an economically deprived setting, life was frequently stressful and uncertain. The financial stresses permeated our home and made life difficult on a day-to-day basis. In such an environment, there was little room to discuss emotions and mental health. Understandably, the immediate concerns of survival took precedence. But in the absence of attention given to my emotional needs, that made me feel invisible, and left me yearning for someone to notice how I was really feeling. It was a deficiency of this question, "How are you really feeling?", which deeply affected me. With no avenue to discuss their feelings, I learned to harbor my emotions within and shove them in some corner of my existence. I found out how to hide my feelings well. Almost serene, at times when I wasn't all right. This not only turned into depression but also made me equate vulnerability with weakness.
I started to feel like being too emotional was failure or weakness. It was much later in my life that I realized how serious mental health and emotional well-being are, not only for me but also for others. This understanding further built a desire in me to take up as a career social work and human rights so that I could be a voice for the voiceless, those who felt unheard and unseen just like me. I want to create a world where all people, but most especially children, feel safe to express how they feel, and mental health is given just as much emphasis as physical health.
I just want to work with underprivileged communities who should get the basic needs required for daily survival, along with some emotional supplies typically sought. My experiences have driven me toward mental health advocacy, particularly for children. I believe that asking children how they are feeling and really listening to their answers can be a game-changer in their lives. It will instill in them a sense of self-worth, resilience, and emotional intelligence that can serve them throughout their lives.
I am committed to creating environments where children are valued and heard, where their feelings are respected, and where they are given the tools to navigate life's ups and downs with confidence and support. It is this lack within my own life of this question, so simple yet profound, that orients my goals and aspirations in many ways. It taught me the importance of empathy, active listening, and emotional validation. I would like my work dealing with social justice and human rights to continue the heritage of advocates such as Linda McCoy-Aitkens, making at least one person feel seen, heard, and valued.
Live Music Lover Scholarship
My first concert was a birthday gift for my 13th, and it is a memory which I'll always keep with me. Mom knew exactly how much I was obsessing over Fall Out Boy at the time, so she surprised me with tickets to their concert. I knew every single lyric by heart, and my room was glued with their posters; this was the soundtrack to my life. I could hardly contain my excitement when those tickets came out of the envelope.
It was one of those concert days where it actually felt like a dream come true. My heart was racing in anticipation as we made our way to the venue. The crowd outside was so energetic, a sea of people with Fall Out Boy T-shirts and excitedly chattering about the show. Then my mom and I found our seats, and as soon as the lights dimmed, a wave of cheers erupted from the crowd. The opening chords of their first song filled the arena, and I could feel the music reverberate through my whole body. I jumped to my feet, singing along with every word, completely lost in the moment.
Actually seeing Fall Out Boy live was way more of an experience than listening to some of my favorite songs. It's the energy of the crowd, the excitement of seeing the band live, and knowing one is surrounded by people with the same passion for their music. I remember turning around and seeing everyone sing along, dance, and enjoy themselves. It reminded me of how much music could bring people closer to each other, thereby creating a unity of feeling and joy that didn't let anything else precede them.
That night, I felt a connection not just to the band, but with everyone in the arena. Then, when they began playing one of their slower numbers, the whole crowd busted out their phone lights, and the arena lit up like it was a sea of twinkling stars. Mom and I were swaying to the music, and I felt so grateful that I had been able to take part in this once-in-a-lifetime experience. It wasn't just about the concert; it was about creating these memories and the state of happiness which music brought into my life.
Later on from that first concert, I have attended many, but that night will always hold a special place in my heart. Well, more than a birthday gift, it was an experience that showed me the magic of live music and how it can create moments that stay with us forever. Music has continued to be huge in my life, and the lessons I learned from that first concert carry into my life to this very day. It taught me the power of music in bringing people together and the joy shared among them when you share something you love. Singing along with each word to my favorite songs that night, it occurred to me how much music can shape our lives, creating memories to last a lifetime.
Barbara Cain Literary Scholarship
Books have, from as far back as I can remember, been an inspiration and companionship, just as they were for Barbara. Novels, biographies, and even encyclopedias helped to console me as a young boy. Books allowed me to travel through other worlds, thoughts, cultures, and experiences. They have been my companions during lonely times and my guides when I felt lost. The lessons I have learned from the books I read shaped my goals and aspirations and are still shaping the path on which I travel today.
One of the most important things that I have been able to learn from my books is the strength of empathy. Reading through stories across genres and authors has taught me how to look through other people's eyes. I have learned to respect the complexity of human emotion and experience. This has helped me a lot in being more considerate and understanding towards others. For instance, the book "To Kill a Mockingbird" taught me a thing or two about standing up for what is right, even when it is hard or unpopular. I came to appreciate the value of courage and integrity through Atticus' firm commitment to justice despite prejudices from the community. This lesson has excited me in pursuing a career where I can have an impact on people and help others as Atticus did.
Books have also nurtured a love for discovery and an eagerness to learn. My interest in history and anthropology developed from the reading of Harari's "Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind". This generated further curiosity about human evolution and developed societies. This curiosity refined my academic goals in pursuit of a degree in anthropology. My principal goal is to understand the puzzles of human culture and history, and I certainly hope to apply that understanding to further education and public comprehension of our collective heritage.
Books have taught me the value of perseverance and resilience. Tales of how characters make it through adverse conditions-like those in Coelho's "The Alchemist"-have taught me that it is infrequent for a journey to a person's dream to be smooth. Santiago's quest to fulfill his personal legend showed me that, in fact, such a journey includes persistence for personal growth and fulfillment. This has been quite important in my life, as I have gone through challenges that, at one point, made me test my will and determination. Books like these have further made me believe in the importance of adhering to one's goals, no matter the obstacles.
With books, I developed the need to share this pleasure with others, this led me to volunteer at the local library to help with reading programs for children. Indeed, nothing is as rewarding as seeing the look of wonder on a child's face when they listen to a new story and experience some magic that books bring into our lives. The books have been my teachers, companions, and inspiration. They have taught me empathy, fueled my curiosity, reinforced my resilience, and have lit a passion for sharing the joy of reading with others. I have learned valuable lessons from the books I read, which were profound in the shaping of my goals and guided me along my path. I hope to pursue my own dreams for Barbra and all those young readers who have been changing with the help of so many books, just as the books changed my life.
Barreir Opportunity Scholarship
Growing up in a single-parent household with my dad shaped me into the person I am today. My mom was mainly absent, choosing a carefree lifestyle over her responsibilities as a parent. Contrarily, my dad did so much for me that I will always be grateful for. My dad became both mother and father, giving me all the love and support when it was really hard for him.
He struggled through life, my dad. He served in the military, working hard for his family and constantly worrying about their welfare. Yet, with such an important job that had him under considerable stress, he was always there:. When my mom and biological father divorced, he chose to take the responsibility of raising me as his own and continued to show me what it is to be truly committed and loving. His passion for being a parent far exceeded what any person could have asked for, especially under those circumstances.
After my dad retired from the military, he struggled with the transition period. He struggled to find consistent employment, and if that wasn't enough, he fought his own personal demons of addiction. It could have easily consumed him, but at no time did he ever let that get in the way of being a father. He made sure, even in the darkest moments, I knew I was loved and supported. He often put my needs in front of his and sacrificed to provide me with a stable and nurturing environment.
My dad never giving up on me also taught me the value of perspicacity and resilience-even when life gets as tough as it can get, one finds the willpower to push through and strive on. He taught me how to take responsibility and be more present when things get real, even when the odds are against you. These have been the lessons forming my character and my outlook in life by instilling great desire in me to overcome obstacles set before me and making it through successfully.
Growing up with my dad, I also got to see firsthand compassion and understanding. Despite struggles, he would always make time for me and guide me through love and encouragement. He never held himself back from sharing his problems with me, and for that, he could teach me about honesty and vulnerability. His nature of being open about his struggles made me more emphatic toward the struggles of others, which is something I will carry in all life spheres.
As I grew up in a single-parent home, having my dad as my guardian motivated me to go on and pursue college as a means of building a more promising future. I want the sacrifice of him raising me well not to be a waste of his time, but rather well spent. This motivates me to be sure to fulfill my goals and give back to my community, just as my dad gave to me. This scholarship would mean taking another important step closer to turning those dreams into reality. It would be an opportunity to stay in school and build a life that truly reflects values instilled within my heart from my dad: strength, love, and resilience in the face of any challenge.
Rivera-Gulley First-Gen Scholarship Award
Being a first-generation college student, I've faced some specific barriers and opportunities shaping my journey into my dreams. Coming from a family where neither of my parents had the opportunity to pursue higher education, I've greatly been at the wheel navigating academia. Such challenges notwithstanding, the strong determination to build a better future for myself and setting an example for those who might come after me greatly stirred my college desire.
Growing up, I had to witness a lot of my parents' struggles because they both had limited educations. They did their best to provide for our family by working back-to-back jobs with irregular schedules. Their hard work and persistence taught me the value of working and education. I realized early on that higher education could open doors to opportunities my parents never had, and I seized them.
College, besides being a personal dream, involves breaking a cycle where opportunity is limited and the founding of a legacy in perpetuity. I want to attend college not just for knowledge and skills toward career building but to do right by my parents' sacrifices, and this will prove to them that their hard work is not in vain. This makes me a first-generation student; hence, I hope to be able to pave the way for my siblings and other young people within my community that all is possible when one seeks to overcome obstacles in pursuit of their dreams.
My career and life goals revolve around making a difference in the health career field. This is why nursing will bring an outlet for assisting others and making a difference in people's lives. I want to be a neonatal nurse practitioner specializing in critical care with newborns so that I can make a difference for families during some of the most difficult times in their lives. It is a very personal career choice, driven by personal experiences in my childhood and based on the need to give patients the care any human being deserves.
Aside from my professional goals, I am also committed to serving my community. Because I am a first-generation student myself, I value the mentorship and support given to me, and I wish to help guide and support other students working their way through similar paths. Whether the need involves volunteering, mentoring, or advocating for educational opportunities, I commit myself to a lifetime of service aimed at bettering other people's lives.
In short, I am motivated by overcoming obstacles that as a first-generation college student I will have to overcome, honoring my parents' sacrifices while creating a better lifestyle for myself and my community in the process. I look forward to opportunities presented by higher education and commit myself to pursue my career and life goals. In the process of pursuing a neonatal nurse practitioner degree, I will prove to be of positive relevance to the healthcare fraternity and an inspiration to others in their pursuit of dreams.
Willie Louis Pegues Science Scholarship
Science has enthralled me ever since I was young. When I was younger, I was always curious; questions would pop out, and I was ever ready to learn how things were done. These were nurtured through experiences one would never think of, like when a bird flies or even the manner in which plants grow in our backyard. I remember the fascination with how every single, even minute, living thing formed part of a larger ecosystem. It was there that early seeds of curiosity in the sciences were sown.
As I grew older, my interest in science started to take shape, especially regarding biology and health-related matters. There was an appeal towards how the human body was so complicated and how various systems combined to keep a person breathing. As years went by, my interest in this field grew even more with the birth of my younger brother, born prematurely and in need of special medical care in the NICU. The quality of his caretakers and brilliance of the health personnel taking care of him strengthened my resolve to join a career in a scientific field. It was more in this setting that I realized I wanted to understand more about the human body and make some valuable contribution in this field.
I wish to be a neonatal nurse practitioner and, thereafter, a scientist related to neonatal health. Long-term health outcomes of premature infants and how early medical interventions could help in improving the quality of life is of particular interest to me. I believe it firmly that the best initiation of life for any child is a birthright, and I would like to be a part of the scientific community working for it. Coupling clinical experience with research, I hope, will allow me to narrow the gap between practice and science and contribute to evidence-based care to the benefit of patients directly.
This scholarship would represent an important step toward meeting my educational and career goals. It would be the financial support to enable me to focus more on studies and less on the burden of tuition. By this, I would be able to involve myself with my course studies completely and would be able to gain knowledge and skilled teachings necessary to excel in the selected field. Further, this will facilitate me to avail research opportunities that may otherwise not be accessible due to financial incapacity. Being selected for this scholarship would not only lighten my financial load but also enhance the motivating factor to further encourage me towards my studies and noble objectives of making a change in society.
I am determined to take full advantage of my love for science, coupled with my personal experiences, as a driving force that propels me to effect positive change in neonatal health. I would further a body of knowledge through my career as a neonatal nurse practitioner and a researcher, one that can improve outcomes for these vulnerable infants. This scholarship represents an investment in my future, and the innumerable futures to come, for those I will touch through my work in the sciences.
Dwight "The Professor" Baldwin Scholarship
Growing up, I struggled a great deal with social interaction due to having autism-mostly just not noticing social cues and feeling so utterly out of place. That made it really hard to make friends. School was the worst because I couldn't relate to my fellow classmates in the way that they could relate to each other. Due to such difficulties, I did question whether I was ever able to work within the field of healthcare, a field I always had interest in. I never wanted to come off as cold or distant to the patients, and I felt that my struggles with social interactions could somehow prevent me from giving the infant that secure and cared-for feeling.
But then, my view totally changed when my younger brother was born prematurely and had to be cared for in the NICU. Being in the NICU and around him, I felt a connection to newborns that I had not felt with others. Infants do not rely on social cues but, rather, communicate through raw emotion. To this, I could understand and speak accordingly. Therein, a bond between my brother and me developed without words or typical social interactions. From this came the realization that I can care in my own way and my abilities can be a strength, not a liability.
This was the spark that developed my interest in becoming a neonatal nurse practitioner in order to work in the NICU, where I can provide critical care to newborns. My autism gives me a unique perspective and set of skills that I believe are particularly well-suited for the NICU environment. The NICU is a very controlled and organized environment, and that really just plays into my Type A personality and the need for order. I'm very successful in an environment that requires attention to detail and meticulousness-necessary qualities for neonatal care.
Being selected for this scholarship would be a great honor and would provide me with the finances needed to continue my education in becoming a neonatal nurse practitioner. This would also be a satisfying tribute to the memory of Dwight Baldwin, who had dedicated his life to finding ways to help students with disabilities realize their dreams. Like him, I want to make a positive impact on those who are often overlooked or misunderstood. I strongly believe that my experiences with autism have instilled in me a profound sense of empathy and the motivation to genuinely care about others, especially those who are helpless and need more assistance.
I will be able to utilize my talents and experiences to provide the best possible care for newborns in the NICU. This scholarship would not only help me reach my career goals but also allow me to honor the spirit of resilience and dedication that Dwight Baldwin embodied.
Career Test Scholarship
My aspired career path is to become a neonatal nurse practitioner, a role that combines my passion for healthcare with the commitment to support the most helpless patients: newborn babies. It becomes a personal and organic choice, considering how my childhood experiences helped shape my understanding of the deep impact compassionate and skilled care has on individuals and families at junctures that are critical to life.
First of all, I have set a clear course in educational and professional steps that would allow me to reach my goal. I am currently studying to be a nurse, learning basic medical knowledge, patient care, and clinical skills. I take part in classes directly related to pediatrics and neonatology so as to delve into the special knowledge I want for my future profession. I look for opportunities to get hands-on experience through internships and volunteering in NICUs and pediatric settings. Such experiences are important in understanding the day-to-day realities of neonatal care and building the necessary skills towards quality care delivery to critically ill infants.
My experiences and interests align well with my Chosen Field. Growing up as the child of a serving member in the Navy, I have been exposed to the emotional and logistical difficulties one goes through in being a caregiver to a loved one in a high-stress environment. My younger brother's stay in the NICU at the age of 16 set a lasting mark on me and confirmed my interest in neonatal nursing. This empathy and resilience developed during that period were among the core strengths I bring into my studies and, consequently, my future career. It is these qualities, along with my academic background and practical experiences, that place me well to excel as a neonatal nurse practitioner.
I see myself, in my future role, making a difference through providing comprehensive and compassionate care to newborns and their families. I am committed to advocating for the needs of each patient in a way that provides personalized, effective care to the patients. I also strive to help families cope with the emotional stresses that come with having a newborn baby in the NICU by providing the much-needed advice, reassurance, and education. I will try to contribute to an environment conducive to support and healing that will nurture the physical and emotional well-being of all patients and their families.
Furthermore, I will continue by engaging in constant professional development to stay updated on changing trends related to neonatal care and best practices in the field. I will make sure, through participation in both research and further education, that my level of skill and knowledge is current and maintains the highest standard of care.
I am clear about my short-term and long-term goals for the Neonatal Nurse Practitioner program based on firm personal commitment and an established pathway. My skills, interests, and experiences all go hand in hand with my chosen profession, and I am going to act in order to make effective neonatal care possible. In my practice, professional growth through ongoing learning and best practice will be ensured, and my aim will be to promote and enhance the life of most vulnerable patients and their families.
Heroes’ Legacy Scholarship
Growing up as a child with a military parent greatly influenced my life and my aspirations. My father was an officer in the Navy, serving in Key West during my childhood. His service not only made me proud of him because he served his country but also presented me with some peculiar challenges in a way that molded my character in pursuit of a career in nursing.
I felt lonely in Key West. Unlike more major military bases, our station didn't have a large community of children my age. Also, I was too young to attend school like my brother, leaving me with no one my age to relate to. Compounding matters, Mother was absent much of the time, trying to balance keeping a household running while attending to her own obligations. The emotional pressure was high, especially while the father was away on deployment: the absence of both parents was challenging.
Of course, these were the worst times for my father's deployments. At such a tender age for me, not knowing whether he was to come back, and in one piece or not, robbed me of being carefree and created a sense of uncertainty and fear within me. The emotional separations tore me apart, and I always found consolation in the strength and bravery my father embodied. Undeniably, his resilience to such circumstances of being distanced and unsure was an example of great strength that helped mold me.
It was because of my father, who, despite having dangerous duties, did not abdicate his responsibilities, that I wanted to do something to help others. It led me to understand that it would have been a good thing for one to be able to give comfort and reassurance to people during their time of trials. Thus, a desire to give care and reassure people in those moments of uncertainty and trepidation made me choose nursing as my career. I want to be there for the patients and their families, providing that same comfort and care that I desired when my father was away.
I want to bring resilience and empathy, honed through experiences, into nursing. I want to be that source of comfort, giving excellence in care to people dealing with difficult medical situations. These lessons taught me through growing up in a military family instill in me a deep understanding of emotional challenges individuals may face, and I am committed to using this understanding to contribute positively to the lives of my patients.
Bear Fan Scholarship
Now that "The Bear" is leading into its final season, it's time to give each character their due and bring a sense of closure that fits with the growth. For me, the perfect ending has to do with healing, transformation, and, most importantly, community built in The Original Beef of Chicagoland.
We open on a huge life decision for Carmy Berzatto. A little traumatized by his experiences and the expectations placed upon him in the food world, Carmy steps away from the intensity of the kitchen and opens a community culinary school in Chicago to teach under-resourced kids. He finds a new purpose in teaching these young, aspiring chefs and finally finds peace, using his love of cooking to give back in a positive way to honor his late brother's legacy. Meanwhile, Sydney Adamu has grown a great deal into his chef and leadership role, assuming day-to-day operations of The Original Beef. Under her watch, this restaurant becomes a celebrated hotspot, mixing in the warmth of Chicago's food with that new flair. It finally pays off when she gets her first nomination for the James Beard Award, placing her as a rising star in the world of food. She does this without sacrificing the authenticity and heart that always seemed to be at the center of her cooking; thus, proving one can innovate without losing the plot.
Richie Jerimovich is Carmy's cousin who throughout the series has struggled with anger and self-worth, finding his niche outside the kitchen. He plays the role of front-of-house manager in this restaurant, bringing his in-born charisma along with street smarts to create a warm and inviting atmosphere for his customers. The road to self-improvement involves attending therapy and forging healthier relationships with people around him. And finally, Richie finds a place that welcomes him and gives him purpose-finding his own way of contributing to the success of this restaurant.
Tina was a hard-nosed yet kind-hearted line cook who found her calling in teaching. She became an instructor at Carmy's culinary school, teaching a new generation the things she knew and loved. It gave her a great sense of satisfaction to know she was helping kids find their way, as she did. This job shows Tina is softer, more maternal, making her proud with every student growing up and becoming successful.
The series concludes with a grand celebration at The Original Beef, now an established community gathering space. Everyone shows up to dinner, celebrating the journeys and the relationships that were formed. The camera then pulls back against the backdrop of a dynamic city of Chicago, building towards a bright future for all of them. The ending satisfactory in the way it wraps up their stories in the best manner with the themes of redemption and growth, will be the power of community that will leave fans with a sense of hope and satisfaction regarding what happens to these well-loved characters.
Sean Carroll's Mindscape Big Picture Scholarship
Understanding the nature of our universe is perhaps one of the most profound tasks humanity can undertake. First and foremost, it caters to our intrinsic curiosity; secondly, it lays the very foundation for scientific and philosophical advancements capable of transforming our society. Understanding of the universe is important for a number of reasons: because it enhances knowledge, extends the frontiers of human possibility, and brings the person closer to his or her condition in space. The spirit of understanding is not confined to one particular field or discipline but crosses over into many aspects, ranging from physics and philosophy to biology and literature, each with its unique insights and perspectives.
The basic perception of the universe is to expand the knowledge base. Man, since the beginning of civilization, has been creatively and positively driven by the yearning to explore and understand the world around him. This curiosity has led to many discoveries which have fundamentally altered ways of living life and self-concepts. The discovery of the laws of physics gave us tamed electricity, modern medicine, and space travel. In fact, the more we learn about the universe, the more inventive we can become in solving the problems that surround us. For instance, the pursuit of understanding the universe at its most fundamental level in physics has brought us insights into the nature of matter, energy, space, and time. The discoveries of quantum mechanics and general relativity in the 20th century revolutionized our view about the universe and gave rise to practical technologies such as computers, GPS, and sophisticated medical imaging. It could be added that knowledge about the universe may bring further practical advantages in the enhancement of quality of life and solutions for some of the most serious challenges modern humanity faces: climate change and energy sustainability.
Understanding the universe is also a reaching outward, expanding the possibilities of reality. It even dares us to step out of our own little corners and think about something bigger. Through the exploration of the universe, one can take up the basic questions of existence, like the nature of consciousness and reality itself. This drives us to come up with new theories and ideas, to be innovative, and almost reckless in moving beyond the frontiers of current knowledge. For instance, theoretical physics continuously pushes the boundaries of our understanding: it is under constant attack by the concepts of string theory, dark matter, and dark energy; thus, we are constantly forced to reconsider reality. Abstract and esoteric as these notions may sound, they do have the potential to revolutionize our understanding of the universe and our place within it. We are pushing the boundaries beyond what is believed to be possible. We open up new ways for exploration and discovery, inspiring future generations to take that quest further.
The more knowledge about the universe serves to tie us a little more closer to our place in the cosmos. Learning about stars, planets, and the great reaches of space, we are reminded of our smallness within the grand scheme. This may be a salutary experience, at the same time being deeply inspiring. It reminds us that we are part of something greater than ourselves and encourages us to look out of our lives and at the big picture. Philosophy and literature have also long tackled subjects regarding the reality of existence, the meaning or purpose, if any, of one's life, and where each of us stands in the universe. Through the investigation of such questions, we understand more about what it is to be human and our place within the cosmos. Such understanding may cultivate a sense of wonder and awe and a desire to learn more about the universe and our place within it.
One of the most exciting things about the study of the universe is that it requires an interdisciplinary approach. Each of these individual aspects-physics, philosophy, biology, mathematics, and literature-offers different emphases and insights into the nature of the universe. In marrying these various fields, we derive a more whole understanding of the universe in which we exist and of our place within that universe. For example, physics may provide a framework of knowledge on the fundamental laws comprising the universe, while philosophy takes one on a journey of implications this carries regarding one's understanding of reality and existence. Biology can offer one insight into the nature of life and consciousness, and with literature, one will find an exploration of human experience and the mutual relations between man and the universe. It is this marriage of the different fields of study that will allow us to reach a more complete and subtle understanding of the universe and of our place within the universe.
Having been an enthusiast about understanding the universe, I hope to add to this quest by combining insights from various fields of study. I have been brought up in the field of mental health, which has given me a very firm grounding in the scientific method and furthered my respect for the complexity and beauty of the universe. I am particularly interested in the relationships between science and philosophy. Of the many concepts that I would like to explore more, one includes that of emergence in complex systems. In physics and biology, emergence describes the process whereby larger-scale units, patterns, and regularities are produced through the interaction of smaller- or simpler-scale units that do not themselves exhibit the properties in question. Thus, for example, consciousness is an emergent product of the interactions of brain neurons; life itself emerges from the complex interactions of DNA molecules and cells. Understanding emergence leads to understanding the way complex systems emerge, how the human brain emerged, and even how the universe emerged over time.
Another idea that has really captured my interest regards the notion of reality and the relationship between the physical and the metaphysical. For hundreds of years, philosophers have debated questions regarding the nature of reality, and over the last several decades, work in the field of physics has started to add new dimensions to the discussion. For instance, the discovery of quantum entanglement and the concept of the multiverse both question our conventional view about space, time, and causality. By posing these questions from the point of view of science and philosophy at the same time, I hope to arrive at a more thorough understanding of the universe and our place within it.
In the end, it becomes clear that comprehending the nature of our universe is not only an important but also a very valid task. It widens our understanding, extends the realms of possibility, and roots us more firmly into our status as cosmic citizens. A pursuit of explanation which does not pertain merely to a particular field, but cuts across so many levels of knowledge, each with accompanying insights and light. It encompasses physics, philosophy, biology, mathematics, and literature, adding to a complete understanding of the universe and our existence. Being interested in how the universe is explained, I look forward with much anticipation to continuing my studies in the journey of contributing to this quest. Through the research of theories such as the concept of emergence and reality in general, much new insight about the universe and our individual relation to it may be gained. I am committed to using ideals of philosophy in my future career and hope to make a meaningful contribution to our understanding of the universe and our place within it.
HeySunday Eco-Innovation Scholarship
Plastic pollution is today considered one of the most daunting environmental dilemmas, with severe effects on ecosystems, wildlife, and human health. With ever-increasing plastic waste stored in oceans, rivers, and landscapes, this causes severe ecological damage such as habitat destruction, ingestion by animals, and emission of toxic components. The essay outlines the extent of plastic pollution, as well as some novel solutions to overcome and reduce its impacts, with an aim toward fostering a greener future ahead.
Plastic pollution has turned into a kind of global crisis that has attained alarming proportions. According to the United Nations, about 8 million tons of plastic waste end up in the oceans annually. That equates to approximately a garbage truck worth of plastic being dumped into the ocean every minute. Plastic waste poses a severe threat to marine animals, as animals like fish, sea turtles, and seabirds frequently ingest or get entangled in plastic debris. Such ingestion can result in internal injuries, poisoning, and even death. Furthermore, plastics are decomposed into microplastics: small particles that penetrate the food chain and eventually affect human health when ingested through seafood. The omnipresence of microplastics in marine ecosystems really underlines the dire need for comprehensive plastic pollution mitigation.
To take the challenge of plastic pollution effectively, a multi-faceted approach needs to be taken. First is the enhanced technologies and systems for recycling. Current methods of recycling are limited both by the types of plastics they can process and the efficiency of sorting mechanisms. Advanced recycling technologies, such as chemical recycling-which breaks down plastics into some of their most basic molecules-can produce high-quality raw materials for new products. Expanding public recycling programs and offering business and personal incentives to encourage participation in these programs can increase plastic recovery rates, thus minimizing waste and continuing the circular economy.
Another very important solution involves the formulation of biodegradable substitutes for conventional plastics. Materials such as polylactic acid (PLA), produced from corn starch, and other bio-based plastics degrade much easily compared to conventional plastics. Encouragement towards studies and innovation in biodegradable and compostable materials must be complemented by incentives through subsidies and regulations if transition away from single-use plastics is sought. This will help reduce plastic litter persistence in the environment to the barest minimum.
Also worth noting are the significant roles of educational campaigns and community involvement in the fight against plastic pollution. Realization of the impacts of plastic wastes on the environment, through knowledge, would create attitudinal modification. Education would thus advocate for the reduction of plastic use and proper waste management at schools, communities, and business levels. Community clean-up events, plastic-free challenges, and workshops on sustainable practices can, therefore, be used to enable individuals in environmentally conscious choices that reduce plastic footprint.
Plastic pollution indeed is a great challenge, but innovative solutions with a united effort make much improvement possible. With increased recycling technologies, biodegradable alternatives, community participation based on education, and effective policies, plastic waste impacts could be minimized and ensure a more healthy environment. Being a student of commitment to environmental sustainability, I hereby pledge my contribution to this effort and support the change that would have a better impact on our mother earth and future generations.
“The Office” Obsessed! Fan Scholarship
"The Office" became such a big part of my life, morphing my sense of humor and sense of workplace dynamics in ways I really hadn't counted on. Of all the colorful cast of characters at Dunder Mifflin, I find myself most able to identify with Jim Halpert. His mix of dry humor, passive rebellion, and genuine compassion captures qualities that I see in myself and would like to grow in.
These things about Jim-quick-witted and the resident prankster, mainly towards Dwight Schrute-are strictly comic elements but encompass even further inside the realm of character development in Jim. His pranks mean much more than playful nuisances; they have to do with being creative in the manner through which he decides to release a bit of levity into an otherwise fairly monotonous atmosphere. I know this because of Jim's humor about life and lightly subversive nonconformity. Like Jim, I often use humor to deal with and move through some of life's more mundane aspects. Watching Jim juggle his playful side with a deep sense of responsibility and care for his coworkers has influenced my approach toward both work and relationships.
One of my favorites is "The Dundies"; although Jim is always saying something sarcastic, he's really supportive and encouraging toward his coworkers. This really shows how Jim can be a leader yet remain a friend; he possesses a perfect blend of humor and empathy that I try to emulate. His interactions with Pam, and his willingness to fight for his ideals concerning office politics, provide a very recognizable perspective of staying true to one's character and compassionate nature while trying to work professionally.
Another thing that influenced my vision about the dynamics of the workplace is "The Office". This simple sitcom about office life, with all its weirdness, conflicts, and friendships, tried to give me a more diverse vision regarding people's behavior in the professional sphere. For instance, the respect of the show to sometimes preposterous aspects of office politics has taught me to approach such situations with no more gravity than Jim does: through humor and perspective. This has helped in keeping me levelheaded and resilient in my experiences and ultimately able to see challenges through in a balanced way.
What's more, Jim's evolution throughout the show-from the slightly disheartened salesman to being supportive and present as a partner-represents, by and large, the kind of personal and professional growth that I would want to achieve. It underlines that it is very important to remain true to oneself while learning to adapt to changed circumstances and taking on newer responsibilities. This has been a valuable lesson for me in treading my path and working on growth both in my personal and professional life.
In short, Jim Halpert's character from "The Office" resonates deeply with me due to his unique mixture of humor, creativity, and compassion. His regard for the workplace and how he can make even the most mundane situations humorous and meaningful have, in a great way, influenced my thoughts and even my humor. The show has helped me understand or reiterate how multifaceted work life could ever be while bringing a balance between being professional and true to oneself. As a "The Office" follower, I am thankful on many counts for its characters and humor through my life and career.
Chappell Roan Superfan Scholarship
From the first moment I heard Chappell Roan, her ability to weave high energy with the deepest emotional telling of stories really blew me away. Her unique sound and heartfelt lyrics reverberate with authenticity that has reached deep into my heart. Songs like "Pink Pony Club" and "Good Hurt" are way more than just songs; they are potent messages of personal experience and universal truth that have touched me immensely.
Pink Pony Club" by Chappell Roan was the first song I had ever heard from her, and it just clicked instantly. In a song like this, an upbeat tempo and catchiness equate to further messages about self-acceptance and breaking free of society's constraints. "Don't be afraid to be you" went on to be a kind of personal mantra to not only accept my individuality but to stay away from the pressures that conformed one to unreal molds. This is a message of self-empowerment that I have carried with me throughout the year-just being me and not impressing others with my life.
On the other hand, "Good Hurt" connected with me on a different level. The song's reflective lyrics and haunting melody capture the complex emotions of heartbreak and healing. The line that hit me most poignantly goes, "I'm still feeling the hurt but am learning to let go"; a very deep and meaningful statement-one that I have been using to help battle my own pain. This battle of vulnerability and strength in her songs has been comforting and, at the same time, an inspiration. It helped me process my own feelings and find hope in the face of adversity.
But Chappell Roan is so much more than a musician in my presence. She is such a huge force regarding making a statement through her expression and working for the rights of the LGBTQ+ community, which has broadened every day. Because she was so open about where she came from and because she embraced people of every kind, I finally felt included and understood, thanks to someone like Chappell Roan. Chappell's promotion of self-expression and acceptance urges me to vocalize my values and stand with causes that further equality and respect for human beings everywhere.
This year has been a journey of self-discovery and personal growth, and the music of Chappell Roan guided and supported me every step of the way. I have been using her songs as the soundtrack to my experiences, a solace, and motivation. Empowerment and toughness are some of the themes within her music that helped me navigate challenges confidently and with love, embracing myself just the way I am.
Supporting Chappell Roan is like supporting an entire movement in the name of self-expression and acceptance. Her artistry and her activism have been incredibly influential for me to stay true to myself and to use my voice in service of something much bigger than myself. Chappell Roan's musical works are, if anything at all, a celebration in their own way of the uniqueness of every individual and the strength derived from that uniqueness. It is for this reason that I am proud to support her career and be a fan of such an artiste who inspires me each and every day.
1989 (Taylor's Version) Fan Scholarship
As 2023 has taken shape, *1989 (Taylor's Version)* is irrefutably the soundtrack of this year. A record full of catching energy and reflective lyrics that have given both comfort and inspiration in times of great change and growth. If I were to choose a few tracks from *1989 (Taylor's Version)* that have defined my year so far, they would be "Wildest Dreams," "Out of the Woods," and "Clean." Each song, for its due worth, has agreed with me so much and shows a different part of my journey this year.
"Wildest Dreams" is basically an anthem-one urging me to live in the present and appreciate all those sprightly, magical moments in life. The line, "He said, 'Let's get out of this town / Drive out of the city, away from the crowds,'" epitomizes such an urge to run away from routine and into the lives of adventure. And this year, all of a sudden, I've taken one or two risks where comfort zones are close to nonexistence-whether in pursuing opportunities, exploring new interests, or simply dreaming big. This song brings such a nostalgic tone and wistfulness that remind me to enjoy such moments and not be afraid of that impermanence. It is a reminder that even if things may change, the experiences and memories we will get are worthy and worth embracing.
"Out of the Woods" really speaks to challenges and growth derived from navigation through difficult times. That is one of the intense lines here: "The rest of the world was black and white / But we were in screaming color," showing the overcoming of obstacles and finding clarity through chaos. The past year has brought its fair share of trials, but a period of self-discovery and resilience it has also been. The song talks more about the journey of moving past the hardships and finding strength in the aftermath of such saddening situations, which speak to personal experiences I have gone through. It tends to remind one that, while the path may be fraught with difficulties, the process of emerging stronger and wiser is beautiful.
Finally, "Clean" has been a powerful anthem for personal renewal and letting go of the past. The lyrics, "The drought was the very worst / When the flowers that we'd grown together died of thirst," basically tell of the end of one chapter and the beginning of another. As I face changes and transitions this year, this song has been a comforting reminder that it's okay to leave behind what no longer serves me and to begin again. It's fitting as the end to a year of change and growth, so well captured in this track: the sense of clarity, the feeling of release as one moves forward.
More than an album, *1989 (Taylor's Version)* has been my companion through the ups and downs of 2023. These songs of this rerecorded masterpiece have given solace and motivation all at once, mirroring the topography of the emotional landscape of my year perfectly. Taylor Swift's music is, while embracing the present, ways to overcome any challenge and, at the same time, renewal; it's there to remind me of the beauty and strength that come with every step of the way.
Team USA Fan Scholarship
Besides Simone Biles, my other favorite athletes pale in comparison because she is an athlete and a very eager supporter of Team USA. Everything that surrounds Biles goes way beyond what this girl does on the floor, beam, or bars. I can also appreciate Biles for being quite brave and an activist, which really makes her an inspiring figure.
The gymnastics career of Simone Biles has been nothing short of phenomenal. With seven Olympic and a record of 25 World Championship medals, four of which are gold, levels of success few know. Biles' routines throughout her career have included some of the hardest passes, but she has accomplished them with so much grace and precision that it almost feels like a breeze. The performance of moves invented by her, such as the "Biles" and "Biles II," represents unparalleled perfection and ingenuity. To see her finish a routine is a heart-stopping experience because she has always pushed the envelope on what is believed possible in gymnastics.
But what makes Simone Biles truly remarkable is not just her prowess in the sport but rather her courageousness and integrity. During the Olympics in 2020, Biles withdrew from some events and was glad she did, to take care of her mental health. It was so much expected of athletes in these modern times to move forward with complaints of physical and emotional pains that it was very brave for her to do just the opposite. Biles has helped spur vital conversations about mental health in sports by speaking publicly about her struggles with anxiety and pressure. It was a bold move on her part to step back from competition in search of support; the move challenged the stigma associated with mental health and placed a strong emphasis on self-care.
Simone's advocacy does not stop at herself. She has advocated on behalf of survivors of abuse in sports through demands for accountability and reform. I feel that she has much courage for standing up against injustices and for speaking where others have been silenced. I was inspired by Biles to speak more about the things I believe in and to stand up when it was the right thing to do, even if it was hard.
Moreover, Biles has been such an inspiration to all other younger athletes and fans. She is truly a role model, carrying on the torch of greatness beyond just winning: resilience, integrity, and voicing for positive change. That, together with her commitment to her sport, is commitment to mental health and advocacy in a nutshell: what Team USA stands for, namely, excellence, courage, and a drive to make a difference.
Simone Biles has become my favorite Team USA athlete to cheer because she defines what it means to be a champion. Her incredible feats as a gymnast pale in comparison to her fearless voice on mental health issues and being an advocate for abuse survivors. The story of Biles is a powerful reminder that greatness as an athlete involves more than winning medals: it is about standing up for oneself and others, using one's platform for good, and encouraging others to pursue their dreams with integrity and resilience. As a fan of Team USA, it is not only because of her excellence in the sport that I celebrate Simone Biles but also because of the character of this young woman and what she continues to make a difference in and out of the gym.
“Stranger Things” Fanatic Scholarship
If I could assemble some kind of dream team to tackle some other paranormal evil descending upon Hawkins, Indiana, I would choose Eleven, Steve Harrington, and Dustin Henderson. These three have proven time and again to be resourceful and brave, but also uniquely skilled and qualified in ways that make them invaluable in basically any monster-fighting scenario.
First among them is Eleven. Honestly, it's just impossible to imagine any supernatural threat without her psychic powers. The telekinetic and telepathic powers of Eleven have saved the gang an uncounted number of times-from just closing the gate to Upside Down to defeating the Mind Flayer. Her powers create a real advantage against any supernatural entity that might pop up. But besides the abilities she possesses, Eleven's character has been in development throughout the series to show how strong a girl she can be. She's a fighter and never would step back, even when odds are against her. This emotional growth in the character has made her a more emphatic and connected friend with her buddies, adding a layer of strength beyond supernatural powers. The loyalty and self-sacrifices for the loved ones turn Eleven into the ultimate weapon and protector in every battle.
Finally, I would recruit Steve Harrington, the quintessential "Mom" of the group. While he initially began as the stereotypical high school jock, Steve has evolved into nothing short of an astonishingly caring, selfless, and brave character in "Stranger Things." Lacking any supernatural powers, Steve makes up for this with his bravery, strength, and steep protectiveness toward the kids. Whether it was fighting off Demodogs with a nailed bat or diving headfirst into dangerous situations, just to save others, his iconic moments proved his bravery time and again. What makes Steve so valuable on any team is his instincts during times of crisis mixed with the ability to get close to people on a personal level. His charm and quick wit deflate many tense situations, which will be important in the case of any new threat that comes their way in Hawkins.
Lastly, I would choose Dustin Henderson: the genius of the group and the tech-savvy strategist. The curiosity and intelligence of Dustin have been invaluable in the unfolding of the plot and the elaboration of plans throughout the series. His knowledge in Dungeons & Dragons, science, and technology often gives them a parallel perspective which helps them understand and find their way around the supernatural happenings in Hawkins. Quick-witted and resourceful, Dustin has saved the team numerous times, such as cracking the Russian code in Season 3 or figuring out how to divert Dart from danger. More importantly, he manages to keep the spirits of the team high, even in those very dark moments of their lives, with his positive attitude and sense of humor. The ability of Dustin to think out of the box would be imperative in facing a new supernatural threat.
Together, Eleven, Steve, and Dustin would form a formidable team, combining supernatural strength, courage, tactical thinking, and emotional resilience. With the powers of Eleven, the bravery and physical strength of Steve, and Dustin's intelligence and creativity, there would be an immense offensive and defensive capability, protection, leadership, strategic insight, and problem-solving capabilities. Put all their strengths together, along with their diverse skills, and they would be basically unbeatable against any new supernatural threat in Hawkins. Also, the dynamics between the three would make up an ideal balance of power, strategy, and heart; whatever new danger crops up, they will be ready to face it head-on as a team.
Nintendo Super Fan Scholarship
My absolute go-to Nintendo game for multiplayer madness with my friends has to be *Super Smash Bros. Ultimate*. There's just something about the chaotic energy of this game that every session feels like an epic showdown. Be it casual matches or high-stakes tournaments among friends, *Super Smash Bros. Ultimate* has brought out the inner competitor in us, along with so many laugh-out-loud moments that we still talk about today.
Really setting *Super Smash Bros. Ultimate* above the rest as my number one was one session on a rainy Saturday night. My friends and I had gotten together for what, at one point or another, was intended to be a quiet evening; however, the moment the game booted up, we knew it wasn't going to be. There were eight of us present, so we did a series of four-on-four team battles. Third or so sets of truly random character selection, coupled with equally random choices of stages, we decided to make things interesting by choosing our favorite characters and going all-out on arguably the most chaotic of stages: *Hyrule Castle*.
Me, I went for Kirby-my all-time favorite-while my team chose Link, Pikachu, and Captain Falcon. Up against us were Ganondorf, Bowser, King Dedede, and Meta Knight-arguably the most villainous team. The match began, and from the first seconds, it was general mayhem-items flying left and right, smash attacks here and there, and stage hazards keeping everyone on their toes. For one moment in time, three of us were sent flying off the stage all at once, leaving just Kirby-me-and Ganondorf in a one-on-one show. What made this so memorable was just how intense and hilarious it all was. He and I were both down to our last stock, and with each move, it genuinely felt like it could be the deciding one. The room was on the edge, cheering and shouting at every dodge, block, and hit. In a turn of events, I managed to inhale Ganondorf and copied his powerful Warlock Punch move. My friend's face was a picture as this little pink puffball, Kirby, wound up a very devastating Warlock Punch. And just about at that point when I would have unleashed it, some random bomb item exploded and sent both of us flying in opposite directions.
Both of us ended up off the stage, trying to desperately recover. Those were the final moments, filled with tension. I remember everyone in the room leaning forward, holding their breath. With some quick thinking and a lot of button mashing, I managed to float Kirby back onto the platform just before Ganondorf could make it, winning the match for our team. The room erupted in cheers and laughter. It was one of those "did that just happen?!" moments that perfectly captures why *Super Smash Bros.
My favorite game to play with multiple players has got to be Ultimate*. That night, *Super Smash Bros. Ultimate* proved once more why it's a staple in our gaming sessions. Considering overall unpredictability, fast action, and endless character and stage combinations, it's always something else. Whether one is a pro or a casual gamer, there's always something fun and memorable to be had in a *Super Smash Bros.* match. And for me, that rainy Saturday night was the reminder that I need of why I love playing Nintendo games with friends, as all those moments of surprise, laughter, and excitement make gaming with others so special.
Charli XCX brat Fan Scholarship
As an avid Charli XCX fan, or an "Angel," as we refer to ourselves, I have followed her musical journey from the early days of mixtapes. This album, brat, only deepens my further admiration for her artistry in regards to the bold fusion of pop, hyperpop, and experimental sounds. It's truly hard to choose, considering just how dynamic the record is, but if I really had to choose, I would say it'd be "Rebel Heart." The thing that really speaks to me in this song is its message of defiance, self-expression, and resilience-all things which Charli has championed throughout her career.
"Rebel Heart" is the anthem for any person who has ever felt misunderstood or out of place. With lyrics like, "They try to tell me who I should be / But I don't follow, I'm wild and free," Charli captures that feeling of being in resistance to certain societal expectations and pressures yet insisting on just being yourself. For a young adult such as myself trying to figure my way through identity and self-worth, this song has been a compelling reminder to just be myself, regardless of what others think. What truly speaks to me from "Rebel Heart" by Charli is the unapologetic way of expression that inspires and calls me to be bold in my choices, fearless in the expression of my passions.
The other line that fills me with glee is, "I wear my heart on my sleeve / And it's the best part of me." This lyric epitomizes the fragile and strong ability of Charli, of which I remind myself from time to time. Living in a world where emotion sometimes is seen as a weakness, the sensitivity of Charli is celebrated. It has taught me to see my feelings as a strength, not a weakness, which allows me to feel deeper and bond better with other people.
Charli XCX's music has also influenced me through brat on my view on creativity and the importance of authenticity. Her willingness to take risks and experiment with other genres, pushing the limit of pop music, has made me more open to trying new things and being adventurous in my creative pursuits. Whether it's writing, painting, or simply the way I express myself, Charli's fearless innovation shows me that beauty can be found in breaking the mold and true craftsmanship is what's most important.
This year, more than ever, the musical work of Charli has become the source to lean on and gain inspiration from. When times are hard, songs like "Rebel Heart" give me the power to fight, reminding me that I am not alone. Listening to her sing about embracing herself no matter what guides me through my journey. It's her music that reminds me I can also be unapologetically myself, and it is in the acceptance of myself-flaws and all-that my strength will be.
The brat album is not just a collection of songs; it's a manifesto of self-love, defiance, and resilience. It really is everything that I admire about Charli XCX as an artist and a person. Actually, that holds high connectivity with her fans, proof that she is real and truly passionate in all she does. Being an "Angel" has been an exceptional experience, and I am grateful that Charli XCX keeps finding new ways with every release to inspire and empower her fans. "Rebel Heart" and the rest of the Brat album have marked a point in my life, and I feel privileged to be part of such a fanbase that relishes in a bold and brilliant artist.
Ethel Hayes Destigmatization of Mental Health Scholarship
My home life was anything but stable when I was a child. Every day was filled with stress and fear. I always walked on eggshells, never knowing what would set off the next chaos. Being a child under such circumstances, the only thing one thinks about is surviving another day by developing the mentality for survival. I really thought that once I got out of that environment, it would miraculously get better. I thought getting out would rid me of my struggles, allowing me to thrive on my own in the real world.
Reality wasn't that easy. I discovered fairly shortly after leaving home how little I actually knew about surviving independent of anyone. My friends appeared to transition into becoming productive adults whereas often, I found myself struggling and fumbling in ways to handle everyday life. I had so wished that the simple act of leaving my past behind would erase all my problems, but it didn't. As a matter of fact, it felt like my life was crumbling around me.
This lack of preparedness led to a mental health crisis that I could no longer ignore. I was hospitalized, forced to take a step back from everything I thought I knew. It was a very sobering experience, one that pounded the seemingly grim truth into my mind: that my struggles with mental health did not magically disappear when I left home, but were also part of me that needed healing and attention.
Since then, a variety of therapies and skills learning programs have been undertaken by me to live in the real world. The process has been both enlightening and frustrating, as I often found myself feeling like a child compared to my peers while struggling to grasp concepts and life skills that seemed like common sense to everyone else. Mundane things beyond managing my finances or keeping some kind of routine overwhelmed me. These have indeed been a few humbling experiences, and I am forced to be cognizant of how much more I must learn and do.
The journey of dealing with my mental health seriously has affected my faith, friendships, and goals. For so long in my life, I felt like my struggles made me weak or incompetent. It was hard to accept the fact that I needed help when everyone around me seemed to have it all together. But therapies have taught me that strength is drawn from knowing your vulnerabilities and asking for help when needed. I learned that asking for help is not a sign of weakness but a necessary step to heal and grow.
Relating to relationships, my journey brought an immense change in the way I related to people. I used to feel so ashamed of not being well and tried to hide from my surroundings for such a long time. Afraid of judgment and misunderstanding, I socially isolated myself-my pain locked inside the mask of an average everyday living person. But once I opened up to an actually professional therapist, well, it felt like I wasn't alone. Most people's struggles are similar, and the sharing of such experiences with trusted friends and family has allowed me to make much deeper and more meaningful connections. I have learned that vulnerability encourages empathy and understanding, allowing the sharing of our stories to bring us closer in ways we never imagined.
It is just such a realization that has shaped my aspirations about the future, too. My journey through poor mental health has taught me much about the use of compassion and empathy, first with others, but also with myself. It would appear that I have developed a very strong urge to help other people who are struggling with their mental health, especially individuals who feel as lost as I did or are similarly ill-prepared for the challenges that come with adulthood. This drives me to work in nursing, particularly in the field of mental health. It is with this thought that I would like to enable my experiences to help others in the process of healing and finding strength and resilience from within in fighting their own personal battles.
Mental health has equally been a significant concern, and understanding it more has made me ever more mindful about the necessity of having free and frank discussions over mental illnesses. Rarely, if ever, did I hear people speak about their mental health growing up; when they did, it was often in very hushed tones or with shame. This lack of open dialogue made me feel like I had to hide my struggles, adding on to feelings of isolation and confusion. I hope to make the world aware of mental health and remove the associated stigma so that people can find it comfortable to come forward for help without fear of judgment or discrimination.
Conclusion: The journey of mental health has been long and hard, filled with moments of self-doubt, fear, and uncertainty. Yet, it was also one of growth, self-discovery, and healing. It has taught me to seek help, and to build supportive relationships where mental health awareness can be fostered. I continue to commit myself to helping others with my experiences and creating a more compassionate, understanding world for all those who struggle with their mental health. This scholarship would further help me in my continued education and advocacy, enabling me to press on with my goals and positively touch the lives of the people.
GUTS- Olivia Rodrigo Fan Scholarship
"God, it's brutal out here"-this raw candid lyric by Olivia Rodrigo in her album "GUTS" encapsulates the turbulent nature of growing up. Instantly, this track transported me to the overwhelming whirlwind of emotions defining my adolescence. In those three words, Rodrigo somehow captures the angst of growing up, a choking sense of societal expectations, and a greatly painful journey of self-discovery. Her music, most especially this lyric, has helped me make sense of my experience and not feel quite so alone in the madness that is being a teenager.
"It's brutal out here" perfectly describes the paradox that is adolescence: a time full of exhilarating highs and soul-crushing lows, where every emotion feels magnified and every experience life-changing. Throughout my teenage years were bittersweet in every way with the pressure to be amongst a crowd, to perform well academically, and to find myself within a sea of different identities pulling from every direction. I vividly remember how sleepless nights would result in anguish as to whether I was good enough, fear of not meeting up to the expectations of parents and peers alike, and above all, stifling anxiety that seemed to weigh heavily on my every move. Rodrigo's lyric echoes the internal monologue I, and many others, had during those years-the pain and confusion of adolescent drama, but the acknowledgment that this is some universal sort of human experience.
For me, the brutality Rodrigo speaks of also emanates from the inevitable heartbreaks and disappointments entailed in growing up. Teenage relationships, both platonic and romantic, seldom lack misunderstandings, jealousies, and unspoken expectations that finally drive the final wedge into the relationship. I recall my virgin heartbreak-it felt like the end of the world at that time. The pain was visceral, and I struggled to find solace in a world that suddenly seemed so bleak. Rodrigo's music is a reminder that it's okay to feel deeply and to get your heart broken as part of growing up.
It's brutal out here, he says, speaking also to those brutal pressures of self-discovery and identity formation. Adolescence is about trying on identities, pushing boundaries, searching for a sense of place. Mine was all mired in self-doubt and insecurity, never really knowing who I was or who I wanted to be. Rodrigo's lyric so eloquently captures this struggle, confessing to confusing, often paradoxical feelings that accompany the search for self-identity. Through her music, she reassures listeners it is okay not to know everything-that the journey itself counts just as much as the destination.
Olivia Rodrigo's "GUTS" album and the lyric "God, it's brutal out here" have thus led to a solid impact on my perception about adolescence. They have instilled in me solidarity, comfort-that what I experienced, what I've felt, isn't solely mine but is a part of the shared human experience. That is what makes Rodrigo's music so powerful, having the ability to capture with such honesty and vulnerability the very essence of teenage emotions. Her lyrics remind me that it's OK to feel lost, to experience heartbreak, and to struggle with identity, because all those mean growing up.
I have grown to appreciate much more the strength and resilience one needed to go through this often brutal stage of life. It taught me that being vulnerable is a form of strength, and there's beauty in embracing the complications of being a teenager. As I grow older with each new passing day, I carry along with me lessons this album has taught me and reassurance that, no matter how brutal it may feel, I am never alone on this ride.
Vegan Teens Are The Future Scholarship
Early into my freshman year in college, I developed some abnormal and violent stomach issues. I couldn't stop being sick no matter what I ate and couldn't keep anything inside of me. After the many trips to the doctor and even a visit to the ER, nobody could find anything that was wrong with me. After months of misery, my doctor finally put me on a BRAT diet that I was to stay on indefinitely. Unbearable lack of variety and flavor made me seek another route. That is how I came to do research on vegan diets mainly in order to avoid the inflammation-producing foods while still enjoying my meals.
Transitioning into a vegan lifestyle was not easy at all, but the effects it had on my health were almost immediate. Within a few months, all my digestive issues went away, and I had this amazing feeling of liberation when it came to food. For the first time, I was free to eat whatever I wanted without any fear of getting sick, and through plant-based ingredients, I discovered a whole new world of flavors. This transformation really opened my eyes to the huge capability that a vegan diet has in healing and nourishing the body. It wasn't about what I had to avoid; it was about filling my life with the things that made my body sing.
As I continued into my vegan journey, I began to see the larger implications of my dietary choices. I learned about the ethical and environmental benefits of veganism-from reducing animal cruelty to keeping my carbon footprint low. I realized that every meal I consumed could make a difference in the world. Soon, it became a strategy for solving my health problems and an extended lifestyle that expressed my values: compassion, sustainability, and respect for all life.
Veganism is important because it deals with some of the most severe predicaments of our time. All of those are connected with food choices: the climatic crisis, global water misuse, animal cruelty, and loss of biodiversity. I feel that going vegan is a statement about the kind of world I want to live in: a world where we treat all creatures with kindness and respect and where we take seriously our responsibility to protect the environment.
In this regard, I will keep on applying my acquired education and experiences to the practice and promotion of veganism, thus inspiring others towards making compassionate choices. If pursuing a major in nursing, I would want a minor in Nutrition that could further my understanding of the relationship between food and health. This will eventually give me the knowledge to understand what I put in my body and be able to educate others about the often-overlooked impact food may have on our well-being. Most people hardly understand how food consumed daily affects their health both physically and mentally. Coupling my nursing education with a sound nutritional background, I work hard to bridge this gap and enable others to make choices that would entitle them to a healthier and more fulfilling existence.
Ultimately, I wish to be a voice for change, in which enabling others to learn all the benefits associated with veganism allows them to adopt it into their lives. I believe that through sharing my experiences and life positive changes through veganism, people may think differently about their food choices and their effects upon the world. It is through education and compassion that I can take part in paving a future where veganism will be embarked upon as one of health, sustainability, and kindness.
Patrick A. Visaggi Memorial Scholarship
I hail from a proud line of U.S. Navy servicemen: my great-great-grandfather, who served in the First World War; my great-grandfather, who served in World War II and the Korean War; my grandfather, who served in Vietnam; and my father, who served in Afghanistan. I was born and brought up on a military base in Key West, Florida, and all the values that servicemen stand for-sacrifice, duty, commitment-surrounded me. These were more than family stories; they formed the fabric of my daily life. As I watched my family members receive honor and respect due to their service, I developed a deep appreciation for the Navy and a strong desire to contribute to something bigger than myself.
While I could have much appreciation for their careers in the Navy from my family members, I also felt a strong affinity with the healthcare domain. In school, I liked classes on biology and anatomy very much; in addition, it was volunteer work in local hospitals that made me realize my passion for helping people. I liked the idea of being able to directly affect someone's life by caring for them and soothing them. This passion for health seemed to go against the hopes of my family's future-until I learned that I could do both.
It wasn't until my junior year in high school that I realized I could join the Navy after college as a nurse. This was the epiphany that allowed me to respect my family legacy and at the same time follow my passion in healthcare. The Navy provided a perfect opportunity to serve its mission by providing medical care to service members and their families by carrying ahead the same spirit of service that defines my family generations after generations. This path will work out just right, fusing both my upbringing and personal aspirations.
I would like to pursue my career in nursing, specializing in Neonatal Intensive Care. The idea of working with the most helpless patients-newborn babies who require intensive medical attention-is rather touching. This field of study allows me to incorporate my desire to help others with my interest in medicine, caring for those who cannot help themselves. Furthermore, I find that the Navy fosters discipline, precision, and teamwork-all essential qualities similar to those I feel are demanded within neonatal care-so it seemed a perfect fit for my career goals.
Aside from my family's military background and my professional goals, I also can relate to Patrick A. Visaggi's values on hard work, commitment, and helping others. I grew up in a military family, and with the different challenges encountered moving from state to state, district to district, came the learning of the importance of unity, loyalty, and fighting for the rights of others on and off the battlefield. Like Patrick, I believe in championing and protecting the right of every human being, and through nursing, I see an avenue through which I can fight for my patients' health and well-being.
This scholarship enables me to continue both my family's legacy in service and my commitment to healthcare. It symbolizes those values to which Patrick A. Visaggi dedicated his life: service to one's community, respect for the working class, and the well-being of one's fellow man. These are values with which I am proud to have been inculcated in my life and career, and for which I'm grateful to continue on through education and continue my family's heritage of service into the U.S. Navy.
NYT Connections Fan Scholarship
Word List: Joy, Heart, Ballad, Tart, March, Crane, Liver, Betty, Eclair, Kidney, Rhapsody, Sonata, Ratched, Macaroon, Lung, Croissant.
Groups: Organs - Heart, Liver, Kidney, Lung.
Baked Goods - Tart, Eclair, Macaroon, Croissant. Song Formats - Ballad, March, Rhapsody, Sonata. T.V Nurses - Joy, Crane, Ratched, Betty.
I chose groups related to things important to me and key aspects of what helped me grow into the person I am today. First with Organs. For as long as I can remember I told everyone around me that I would grow up to work in healthcare. In middle school I was reading medical terminology textbooks, and anatomy coloring books. I take this passion with me in college as I am going into my second year as a nursing major. The Baked Goods category relates to another passion of mine. My freshman year of highschool I attended a career and technical academy for culinary arts. I was trained by a world-renowned pastry chef, and learned the importance of attention to detail in each and every action. I grew a deep love for cooking, baking in particular, but applied this skill to everything else in my life always working to produce the best outcome. Next was Song Format. I was a member of band from sixth grade through graduation, playing all different variations of the saxophone. Band helped me find a community of people and love for music as I notice it all around me now. Each year for our festival performance we would work on a ballad, march, and technical piece to perform in front of judges. The experience gave me such a thrill spending months preparing to pour my heart out on stage. The last group ties back into my love of healthcare from the first group. As previously mentioned, I am going to school for a nursing degree, I though a collection of popular on screen nurses from different generations helped reflect that final piece of myself that I am working to achieve in a lighthearted way.
Sabrina Carpenter Superfan Scholarship
From her first appearance as the sassy and witty Maya Hart on Disney Channel in "Girl Meets World" to stealing the show in the music world and Hollywood, Sabrina Carpenter has grown into a true icon that inspires so many people, including myself. Her growth from being a child actress to a multi-dimensional artist is a perfect example of not only her immeasurable talent but also her commitment, sincerity, and strength under circumstances which have constantly changed in the business.
With Maya Hart, Sabrina brought humor, depth, and a feeling of relatability to her onscreen character that resonated with so many people, including myself. Maya was bold, hilarious, and fiercely loyal; the ultimate friend everybody wanted. She wasn't afraid to be herself or stand up for what she believed in, traits Sabrina herself is made of and has carried through in her career. Growing up and watching her on the show "Girl Meets World," I thought Maya was such a brave soul into the tides of life and loyal with her friends; her character was deeply inspiring to me, letting me remember how it's always worth being true to thyself.
Sabrina then transitioned to making music, showing even more versatility as an artist. From the enjoyable, catchy "Please, Please, Please" to the emotional "Espresso," her songs can blend in playfulness with the deeper emotions. Her music speaks to many life experiences at times: self-discovery, love, and personal growth. Being a fan, I find solace and strength in her lyrics during my weaker moments of self-doubt or times of uncertainty. It reminds us that it's okay to be vulnerable, and one of the great ways to do that is to express our feelings and keep ourselves powerful in our own way.
Needless to say, apart from what she does on screen or how she conducts her music, Sabrina uses this influence to talk about pressing matters like mental health, self-love, and social justice. She is not only an entertainer but also a role model through whom positive change and voices are raised to bring positivity and motivate the public for the same. Her genuineness, regarding talking about her own struggles and the pressure of being in the spotlight, made her more relatable and a better human in my eyes.
These are the reasons why Sabrina Carpenter and her career have influenced me so much: for teaching me what authenticity and versatility, along with perseverance, mean. The fact that she went from a Disney Channel star to a highly regarded artist in both the music and film industries teaches that passion and hard work enable evolution and growth without losing the real self. Because of this and for many more reasons, Sabrina Carpenter acts for me and so many other people as a source of inspiration and motivation.
Community Health Ambassador Scholarship for Nursing Students
I would like to pursue the nursing course because of my strong commitment to serving people in need with compassionate care to bring change in my community. For me, nursing is a calling; a way I can serve people and touch their lives in ways that count.
I am 16 years old when my younger brother was born prematurely, and this sparked my interest in nursing. He had to spend many weeks in the NICU, during which I was able to personally experience just how committed to and expertly the nurses treated him. Amazingly, their treatment ranged not only in medication but also in psychological support, extending to my family, which was reeling from the situation that had befallen it. I saw how these nurses played a very crucial role in my brother's recovery and brought comfort to my family, and at that particular point, I knew I wanted to be part of this great profession.
As a future nurse, I want to practice either in pediatrics or neonatology, to support the families and to care for the most vulnerable patients. It is my aspiration to work as a neonatal nurse practitioner, which deals in the care of premature and critically ill infants. I am personally motivated by the urge to support, advocate for, and represent those who cannot represent themselves, and see to it that every child has the best beginning to life. This commitment toward becoming a nurse goes beyond professional goals and translates into some efforts at community contribution.
I strongly feel that healthcare should not be confined to the four walls of a hospital or clinic, and as nurses, we have that privileged opportunity to serve as health ambassadors in our respective communities. Here is another area where I would like to give back to society: volunteering my time and expertise to local health initiatives, such as education in prenatal care, child safety, and nutrition. Educate the families with knowledge and resources, and I believe overall community health and wellness will be positively affected. In addition to providing direct patient care, I have a strong interest in contributing to the development of future nursing professionals.
I am a first-generation college student who deeply understands many of the students pursuing higher education, especially in the rigorous field of nursing. I would like to offer this experience as a mentor and supporter to other nurses with an interest in the profession, sharing my experience with them through the complex structures of nursing school. In such a friendly and accommodating atmosphere, I believe we will create a strong, diverse workforce ready and able to respond to the needs within our communities. Receiving this scholarship would go a long way in easing the financial burden of my education and would thus enable me to put more focus on my studies and clinical work. This will bring me a step closer to achieving my goal of becoming a neonatal nurse practitioner and giving meaningfully back to the community. Thank you for considering my application, and thank you for your investment in the next generation of nursing professionals.
Love Island Fan Scholarship
Objective:
The "Island Treasure Hunt" challenge is meant to test the teamwork and communication skills and the will to compete of the Islanders. It adds an element of mystery and adventure, where the contestants will work together to solve riddles and find hidden treasures across the villa. Inclusion of such challenges would excite "Love Island," adding a physical element to the show along with using mental acuity in such challenges, and it gives suspense while building better bonds among the Islanders.
Overview:
This challenge pits the Islanders into two teams. Both teams are provided with a map and a set of riddles that would take them running around, leading them to various areas in the villa. When they get to such places, they are expected to solve some puzzles or execute some tasks for a clue. These clues will lead them to the final treasure, which could be a luxury reward, a special date opportunity, or an immunity pass protecting one couple from elimination at the next recoupling.
Rules and Structure:
Team Selection
Islanders are divided randomly into two teams to make a selection quite fair. Each team is assigned a color, which they wear as bandanas to identify them in their groupings.
Starting Point:
Presently, the teams gather at the villa pool, where their first clue and a general map of key locations in the villa were given out. The riddle is supposed to lead them into their first challenge location.
Riddle Solving and Tasks
At each location, teams encountered a task that needed completion to get their next clue. These tasks varied in type for testing different skills:
Physically Demanding Challenge: An obstacle course entailing running around an obstacle course to retrieve a key in the pool, blindfolded, by listening to instructions from teammates. Brain Teaser Challenge: Matching cards in pairs to unlock or reveal a word useful in unlocking the next clue. Trust Challenge: A classic trust fall where one member of the team falls backward off a platform and the rest have to catch them. Only when the task has been completed may they move forward. Collecting Clues:
Every time they complete a challenge, a piece of the final map leading them to the place where the treasure is hidden is given to the team. The more clues they get, the clearer it becomes.
Final Treasure:
The last clue will take them to the final destination-a treasure chest buried in sand. Inside the chest is a key to a luxury private suite, a special date card, and an immunity pass. The winning team that finds the treasure first gets those rewards, which adds drama and excitement to the challenge as it goes side by side.
Excitement Level:
Island Treasure Hunt" now infuses a whole new dimension into "Love Island," where physical endurance meets mental acuity and trust-building. In a refreshing switch, it takes viewers away from the romantic entanglements and focuses them on camaraderie, strategy, and problem-solving. The challenge forms suspense as teams speed up against the clock, while the stakes of winning such great rewards add competitive tension that may shift alliances and strategies within the villa. The "Island Treasure Hunt" challenge is where things get a bit more interesting in the show, as it exposes other facets of the Islanders' personalities and abilities.
This challenge epitomizes the entire show of "Love Island", as it shows a mix of fun, teamwork, and competitive spirit-the combination of which results in unforgettable moments that keep fans glued to the series.
Minecraft Forever Fan Scholarship
Growing up, my childhood was complemented by instability and uncertainty. My home life was chaotic, filled with confusion and stress because of my parents' tumultuous relationship. Often, I would feel overwhelmed by the tension and anxiety that seemed to permeate my existence. However, in this turmoil, I found my haven-what provided me with peace and control, and that was Minecraft.
Minecraft is an endless game where one can build, explore, and create their worlds. For many, this was the place to let your imagination run wild; for me, it was so much more. Minecraft became my refuge from which I could enter into whenever things started to get messy in my real life and seek consolation in the order and structure I could bring to it. I always made sure to play on peaceful mode, by my own volition setting myself in an environment with no monsters or threat. I found peace in it, in the predictability of it all, in the possibility of living in a world in which nothing would have the power to hurt me or to somehow suffer another breach of the serenity I so urgently needed.
But the infinity of Minecraft aside, my worlds all seemed to have a crafted similarity. I built sturdy homes with great, solid walls; expansive farms filled with crops; and peaceful landscapes, replete with trees and flowers. Perhaps these worlds seemed repetitive to others, yet to me, they were an externalization of my interior wishes. Each structure represented a tiny piece of the stability and security I wasn't getting in my real world. The repetition in what I constructed wasn't for lack of imagination; this was a way of manifesting my demanding control and order. In a house where everything was so unpredictable, my Minecraft worlds were a way for me to be in charge of the reality. In this perfect world, I could create a house that would never collapse, a farm that would always succeed, and a landscape that would never change unless I wanted it to. Every block was an act of reclaiming a sense of control over my environment, taken away from me by day-to-day life.
Minecraft let me create what was missing in the real world: safety and peace. Every time I opened and started playing, I stepped into a world of my creation where I was the one to decide what would happen and nothing could break the order I had established. A place I could breathe easily without being afraid that at any moment chaos or something could disrupt it. The Minecraft worlds were, in a way, more than mere digital landscapes—it was life as it ought to have been, or better yet, I wished it could have been. The houses, farms, and gardens I so meticulously built spoke to me of the permanence and peace I was desperately craving. They were a portrayal of reality where things were predictable and I was in control, shaping my surroundings as I saw fit.
Minecraft hit home so hard because it provided me, for the first time in my life, something I couldn't find in my real life: a place of peace, safety, and control. It gave me some means of coping with the instability and uncertainty of childhood. In Minecraft, I found the power to create the perfect world I've ever dreamt of: one where I feel at home. For me, the game has never been about building; it is all about finding an avenue through which I can really be in a safe and secure place.
Maida Brkanovic Memorial Scholarship
Being a first-generation college student made a huge impact on my life and has the most bearing on my beliefs and attitude toward difficulties and goal achieving. It taught me a number of valuable lessons: persistence, self-reliance, and education as a driver of change—some of the things that can be referred to as leading vectors in my academic and personal progress.
Being a first-generation, college-bound student means I had to travel through a system my parents and I were not familiar with. Thus, applying to colleges, understanding financial aid, and taking care of academic expectations required a great amount of self-initiative and resourcefulness on the part of the individual. With no precedent set in my family, I learned to get information, ask for help, and self-advocate. This journey has taught me the importance of being proactive and how to be resilient. I learned that, more often than not, success lies in one's own ability to take charge of their path and make use of what is at their disposal to overcome obstacles, even when the way forward may not be clear.
This experience further increased my belief in the power of education. To me, education is much more than just a source of knowledge; it is the way to many doors and the power of self-improvement. Having seen how academic success is going to impact my future, the belief in education as a means to empower people and change them has been reaffirmed. It has driven me to do well in my studies and to have a career that allows me to pay it forward with others, specifically with neonates, so I can make tangible improvements in patients' and families' lives.
Further, the experience of being a first-generation student has heightened my empathy and understanding of the multiple challenges other people face. My own journey has made me acutely aware of how many obstacles may stand in the way of the pursuit of higher education, particularly for those who lack family support or guidance. Knowing this first-hand instills a very strong belief within me in supporting and mentoring others who may face similar challenges. I am motivated to use my experiences to guide and inspire others, making sure that they have resources and encouragement needed to succeed. Relatedly, the sense of responsibility stretches into my future neonatal nursing career, where I would like to support and advocate for families in challenging situations.
More importantly, these lessons learned from being a first-generation student have strengthened the value of hard work and learning perseverance. In my academic life, there have been times of hardship and times of uncertainty, but I learned how to face them with a positive and determined attitude. From that outlook, I learned that setbacks are actually not barriers but opportunities for growth in life. It inculcated resilience that I apply toward all spheres of my life, be it academic or personal development.
Aside from these personal insights, the experience has further instilled in me how to lead and engage with others. From having navigated the complexities of being a first-generation student, I realize how important effective communication, empathy, and working as a team are. These are highly essential skills within academic settings and in the professional world. These experiences will help me in the future when working as a pediatric nurse, thus able to create an environment that is helpful and collaborative in ensuring I am able to deliver care to my patients and relate well with my colleagues.
To this end, being a first-generation student has had a significant impact on my beliefs and values. This experience taught me about not giving up, believing in oneself, and that education can change everything. These lessons continue to inspire me in the process of attaining my goals and making a difference in my chosen field of neonatal nursing. My journey has taught me the tenacity to be able to face obstacles and compassion to lift up others, and I am committed to using those traits in being able to positively impact the lives of those whom I serve.
Once Upon a #BookTok Scholarship
Over the years, #BookTok has been an undercurrent for cultural arguments regarding reading trends and the broader literary discourse on social media. This is one very dynamic community in which TikTok users have really changed the way books are unearthed and talked about, catapulting a spate of titles to must-have status. Designing a perfect bookshelf from the recommended titles of #BookTok clearly depicts the platform's effect on contemporary reading taste and the books that capture its audiences.
Therefore, when thinking to compose any #BookTok-inspired bookshelf, Colleen Hoover comes first to mind. Hoover's novels, like "It Ends with Us," "Verity," and "Reminders of Him," are all over the platform because of the real emotional intensity and the many provocative themes they contain. "It Ends with Us" has that extremely raw, honest way of approaching tough subjects, such as domestic abuse, which commanded conversations on a wide scale about resilience and love. Moreover, "Verity" has captured their minds with its psychological suspense; many fan theories and analyses have come to the fore. Hoover's books really touch on the heart of #BookTok users, who often share personal reflections and discuss the intense emotional landscapes that her stories explore.
On this bookshelf one finds all of Emily Henry's novels, from "Beach Read" to "People We Meet on Vacation." These books are given to their sprinkling of great one-liners and engaging romance, which have since become favorites because they ooze relatability and charm. "Beach Read" gives one the clever narrative about writers wrestling with creative blocks and romantic entanglements, while "People We Meet on Vacation" gives a heartwarming tale of friendship and love through travel. Henry's books have been recommended time and again, gaining loads of exposure through book clubs on #BookTok who praise them for being feel-good yet thought-provoking.
Sarah J. Maas did much in this respect through her series "A Court of Thorns and Roses" and "Throne of Glass". Maas weaves intricate worlds with compelling heroines who turn out to be strong and have enthusiastic readers in #BookTok. In particular, "A Court of Thorns and Roses" provided a foundation for robust fantasies in general, particularly of the tropes and romantic dynamics taking place, and created a thriving fan base interested in deep lore and character analysis.
Similarly, both "The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo" and "Daisy Jones & The Six" by Taylor Jenkins Reid have captured audiences with their richly fleshed-out characters and explorations of fame and relationships. Her books are at once appreciated for their easy-read factor yet opened into huge debates about the nature of narrative itself and what celebrity means.
Circe and The Song of Achilles, the mythological retellings by Madeline Miller, have captured the fancy of many readers through their poetic prose and fresh insight into traditional myths. In this way, her work refreshed interest in mythology, leading to wide discourse on the reinterpretation of ancient stories and their appropriateness to modern-day issues.
Notable mentions include R.F. Kuang's "The Poppy War" series for its dark and immersive narrative and T.J. Klune's "The House in the Cerulean Sea" for heartwarming and whimsical storylines. The authors—both of whom have enabled #BookTok conversations due to the unique perspective and emotional depth they offer—are definitely going to be the top trends.
In other words, a great bookshelf inspired by #BookTok reading recommendations represents an eclectic reading taste of the platform and its capacity to launch certain books toward key cultural status. After all, in these books—through their emotional intensity, character relatability, and genius plot lines— reading trends have been created, but more importantly, dynamic discussions and connections are established within the #BookTok community.
Kylee Govoni Memorial Scholarship
One of the major moments of strength and determination in my life was when my younger brother was born. I was 16 then. He was preterm and had to be immediately transferred to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. It turned out to be an important experience, as that period required balancing different responsibilities with the emotional stress of a sibling in the intensive care unit.
Since my mother used to stay in the hospital with my brother, obviously she was there for quite a long period of time. Because of this, I was responsible for running the household and doing as much as I could to help my family. I took on tasks such as cooking, cleaning, and taking care of my smaller siblings with responsibility and dedication. I knew my support at home was necessary to maintain some sense of normalcy so that Mom could be with my brother.
With all of this responsibility upon me, I still had the feeling that I needed to be in the hospital with my brother. I needed to be there for him and for my mother, even if it meant hanging out in the hospital for several hours on top of managing the home. I visited the NICU as frequently as I could to support my mother, and at the same time, get updates from the medical team regarding my brother's condition and treatment plan. As much as hope filled each visit, so was anxiety. Nevertheless, my resolve to involve myself in this particular situation and be there for my family never diminished.
This experience tested my emotional resilience and strength since it was tiring, what with life's demands at home and the emotional drain of having a sibling in the NICU. In this way, it has taught me maturity and perseverance at a very difficult and formative level in my life. I focused despite the stressors and kept poised. Further, I found ways to be there for my family and offer them comfort and encouragement throughout that hard time.
These very qualities that have increased in me, such as strength and determination, are the ones I will look to for guidance as I move on in my career as a pediatric nurse. The neonatal unit is full of high-stress situations that demand a nurse who has resilience. I will apply staying calm under pressure to deliver efficient and tender care to my patients, able to support their loved ones throughout those trying times.
Strength will also be needed to deal with the emotional and physical challenges of nursing. Much as I was there to support my family when my brother was in the NICU, so I shall be dedicated to providing the same unwavering support and care to my patients and their families. My goal is to aid in creating a supportive and healing environment within the confines of a NICU by being positive and reassuring.
Overall, it was my brother's NICU experience that taught me that the biggest part of strength and will in personal and professional life, some of the major values that make a pediatric nurse strong, would be how to face challenges the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit will present and bring forward a shoulder of comfort to those in dire need.
Strong Leaders of Tomorrow Scholarship
To me, leadership means inspiring people, guiding them, and supporting them in creating an atmosphere where everybody can flourish at their best. I uphold my leadership upon the base of communication, empathy, firmness, and hard work—values I try to follow in my personal as well as professional life.
Effective communication is one of the strong pillars of my leadership. Clear, open, honest, and trusting communication certainly keeps everybody aligned toward common goals. For this, I will make sure to listen to others actively, respect their inputs and views, and express my ideas and expectations with clarity. This approach will not only make collaboration smoother but also help resolve conflicts and make informed decisions.
Empathy is another integral leadership quality for me. Everybody has their strengths and weaknesses, together with his main challenges and perspectives. Taking time to appreciate people's differences helps in offering personalized support and motivation. In teams, for example, I make sure to commend individual efforts and express my appreciation. This really aids morale and creates a conducive, open atmosphere. It only extends into an empathetic approach toward how I support my peers and the people I lead, making sure that they are heard and valued.
Resilience is how one overcomes challenges and setbacks. I try to look at problems in a troubleshooting light and at blocks as learning experiences rather than barriers. Whether it be a very hard project or a personal setback, I remain focused and focused upon ways to adapt to the situation. That resilience enables one not just to survive but to set an example before others that they, too, can overcome with persistence and a proactive attitude.
A **strong work ethic** underpins my leadership. I am dedicated to putting in whatever effort is required to deliver on our goals and expectations of high standards. This means leading by example, whether taking extra responsibilities, staying late to complete deadlines, or continuously learning through self-improvement. By so doing, I will be able to inspire others by our Side showing them very high levels of dedication and responsibility.
Another important constituent in my style of leadership is **collaboration**. I believe true leadership is jointly working toward a single goal, motivated by different strengths and expertise of people. I not only encourage collaboration but strive to create a cooperative environment whereby each person is comfortable sharing his ideas and working together in pursuit of common goals. This collaborative spirit brings along diversity of perspectives and skills, leading one toward more innovative and effective solutions.
To sum it all up, my leadership can be simply described through a combination of the following: effective communication, empathy, resilience, work ethic, collaboration, and being inspirational. These are the qualities that will keep others inspired, team members supported, the environment positive and productive, and be able to sail through obstacles with sheer determination. As I live these traits, I lead with integrity, allowing space for the individual in my team to flourish and become the best version of themselves.
Billie Eilish Fan Scholarship
Billie Eilish has grown to the very top of modern music with a sound all of her own and very personal lyrics. Among all of her songs, there are three that stand out emotionally: "When the Party's Over," "Bad Guy," and "Everything I Wanted." All three exhibit her capacity to blend truly unique musical elements with deep personal reflection, thus making them powerful for listeners.
When the Party's Over" is one such striking instance of Eilish's prowess at rendering the vulnerable through songs. The song features minimalist production, with a spare piano melody and subtle electronic elements that resonate to create an intimate atmosphere, pulling listeners right into the emotional world of Eilish. Delicate and almost whispered vocals add a haunting quality to the song, underscoring the themes of emotional exhaustion and isolation. Lines like "Call me friend but keep me closer" relate to the inner turmoil of trying to maintain relationships while being swamped down by personal issues. This juxtaposition of social outward success with inner turmoil is what makes the music so relatable to listeners who feel similarly isolated despite having the goods. These song parts are raw in their honesty and subtle in production, which makes them an incredibly strong exploration of mental health and the quest for real bonding.
**"Bad Guy"**: Another facet of Eilish's artistry is how this song somehow manages to merge playful, unconventional production with incisive social commentary. In this case, the bass-weighted beat and corresponding instrumental choices do get rather quirky, giving it a rather different and infectious sound. Modulated with a confident, almost sardonic delivery, Eilish plays with ideas of identity and self-perception in a way that critiques societal expectations and stereotypes. The lyrics have the very memorable line, "I'm that bad type," subtending the idea of being bad or edgy. It's this kind of lighthearted approach to serious themes that makes "Bad Guy" not only infectious but also thought-provoking in terms of self-image and societal norms. Balancing lightness with depth lets it appeal to anybody who enjoys music both entertaining and challenging.
**"Everything I Wanted"** shows confusions of fame and personal relationships; it's quite a reflective side of Eilish. The song has a dreamy production that works very well with Eilish's reflective lyrics and soothing vocals. It talks of the contrast between what people think of you and how fulfilled one is, going by lines such as "I had a dream; I got everything I wanted." Fundamentally, she talks about thoughts of isolation despite success and the need for support from loved ones. Much of the song's emotional core comes from its focus on the relationship between Eilish and her brother, Finneas, who is also her collaborator. The family bond and idea of support that would not turn its back on her give supplementation to the basic sincerity and emotionalism of this song. "Everything I Wanted" speaks out to people who fight against the pressures in their success and yearn to find real connection and support.
Ultimately, "When the Party's Over," "Bad Guy," and "Everything I Wanted" show the talent of Billie Eilish in creating innovative music while being very personal at the same time. With each song, one realizes something different: emotional struggles, societal expectations, or the search for authentic relations. It is just this particular sound, combined with the introspective lines of her lyrics, that makes tracks like these really stay in listeners' hearts, thus making her one of the most influential voices in modern music.
LeBron James Fan Scholarship
Many consider LeBron James in discussions for the greatest basketball player of all time, commonly reserved for people whose impacts and achievements extend beyond the sport. Supporters will point to his amazing athleticism, skill level, and durability, while critics argue other players—most notably, Michael Jordan—may better fit the criteria as GOAT. This paper will review why LeBron is held in such high regard and if he indeed warrants being known as GOAT.
LeBron James is built in a rarest-of-rarest type of combination of size, agility, and skill. At 6'9" and about 250 pounds, he brings together the agility of a guard with the strength of a forward. This set of unusual skills gives him extraordinary playing positions, particularly in scoring, passing, and defense. His versatility on the court justifies why he is seen to be one of the most influential players to have played in the NBA ever. It's more attested that he is obviously gifted with outstanding basketball IQ by the way he made adjustments to his game over the years—by improving on his shooting or developing his playmaking skills.
Another important reason behind LeBron's acclamation is how consistent and durable he has proved to be. He has kept himself at a high level over the span of more than two decades, often averaging near triple-double stats. Only a few players can sustain this level of performance over such a long period of time. Whereas most players slide into obscurity, LeBron has maintained the ability to play at elite levels well into his late 30s—an excellence commitment from his part.
But the on-court impact isn't all that makes LeBron's case for GOAT status so strong. Off the court, he has been an outspoken advocate for social justice, education, and community development. One of the most famous examples was his "I PROMISE School" in Akron, Ohio, further hitting home his care and commitment to the children who are at risk and trying to make a difference in their futures. This level of social contribution and community involvement adds a huge dimension to his legacy, showing that his impact is much greater than the basketball court.
The argument for whether LeBron is the GOAT is a highly confusing debate that normally points back to his NBA Finals record. He has four championships to his name but also lost six times in the Finals. Michael Jordan, whom many tag as GOAT, won six championships and is undefeated in the Finals, 6-0. To many people, championships and success at the most critical junctures are the ultimate benchmark for greatness. Many people, though, think that he may be greater than LeBron because Jordan never lost in the Finals, and also due to his reputation for clutch performances.
It is hard to compare players across eras. The game has evolved from rule changes to changes in style of play, making this very difficult. Jordan played in an era that was much more physical, with far stronger defenses, which many feel makes his achievements all the more incredible.
After all is said and done, it really depends on how one defines greatness. Other people will argue he is definitely the greatest basketball player of all time because he is so skillful, so consistent with his game, and has contributed a lot to the court, and off the court in putting the LeBron James brand out there. To others, though, who consider championships and clutch performance as top priority, Michael Jordan or any other player might be the greatest. Ultimately, LeBron James remains the epicenter of controversy related to basketball greatness.

I chose to major in nursing because of my great passion towards the chosen career and the neonatology care that I will render and get. My interest in nursing started with a desire to learn more about health and positively impact others' lives. It truly crystallized after I learned about the unique environment of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Working in such a specialized field, whereby every decision made can make such a big difference to a tiny life, fills me with purpose and dedication.
The examples of caring caregivers standing beside their patients in pain inspired me from my childhood. Having volunteered at a hospital, I was able to see how nurses care technically, and at the same time, emotionally, attending to a whole person. This experience solidified my commitment to nursing, where I came to realize it is not about treating illnesses but taking care of people during the weakest times in their lives.
I became particularly drawn to neonatal care out of respect for newborns' resilience and a desire to support them during their critical time of need. The NICU is a special environment that demands advanced medical knowledge, technical skills, and immense compassion. The medical interventions that may make a huge difference in the lives of premature or critically ill infants are very interesting to me. A career with these features is immediately rewarding to me, working to achieve the goal of giving each newborn an opportunity for a very good start in life.
Another powerful reason behind my interest in neonatal nursing concerns advocacy for those who cannot speak or plead for themselves. Newborn babies are among the most helpless patients, unable to communicate their needs. It's my way of giving them their voice, the way for me as a neonatal nurse to ensure they get attended to and cared for properly. This includes medical interventions and supporting their families through the very real stresses that may come about. I want to be able to be a strength and guide in helping these families get through an experience in neonatal care.
Moreover, there are endless opportunities for growth and learning in nursing. With healthcare constantly changing, I look forward to the constant broadening of knowledge and skills through further certifications, specialized trainings, and colleagues. This commitment to lifelong learning enables me to be able to give quality care and be ahead in neonatal nursing.
Basically, the passion for nursing and neonatal care comes from a desire to make a difference in the life of the newborn baby and his family. It is a great opportunity, which is both rewarding and challenging, to combine medical expertise with compassion and advocacy. It's what drives me forward: thinking about how, as a neonatal nurse, I am there for some of the most vulnerable patients in their very earliest days—helping them through the challenges and making sure they get off to the best possible start in life.
Boatswain’s Mate Third Class Antonie Bernard Thomas Memorial Scholarship
In my everyday routine, I strive to embody several key traits that are essential to both personal growth and professional success in nursing: strong leadership and communication skills, resilience, unselfishness, focus and determination, and a strong work ethic. These qualities not only help me navigate daily challenges but also prepare me for a future career where I aspire to become a neonatal nurse practitioner.
Leadership lines and communication skills are very essential in nursing because it helps me to work with everybody as a team toward one goal. I demonstrate this by taking initiative in groups, whether in class projects or volunteer work. I maintain active listening of others' ideas and views, clearly articulate my thoughts, communicate assertively, and know what our goals are and how we are going to attain them. Ensuring that the environment is open to dialogue, mutual respect, and openness helps me create a team dynamic where people feel valued and are properly motivated to contribute.
Resilience is another trait I practice daily. In particular, nursing is emotionally and physically demanding, so establishing one's resilience means the development of a strong mind with a positive attitude and the building of coping skills to enable the overcoming of stresses and setbacks. This might include mindfulness exercises, physical activity, or others such as friends and mentors for checking on mental and emotional well-being. This resilience enables me to be focused and able to press on towards my goals with persistence, knowing that each challenge is a chance for growth.
Unselfishness is one of the virtues I find important in my personal life and future nursing profession. I believe in putting other people's needs ahead of mine whenever necessary. This attitude translates completely to my future work in a neonatal ICU, where the comfort of the newborn and their families will always be at the forefront of my mind. It is focus and determination that keeps me striving for greatness in all that I do. I set achievable goals for myself and remain committed to reaching them, no matter how difficult they may be. This determination is also reflected in my academic pursuit, whereby I always push myself towards the understanding of complex material and striving for excellence. With this sharp focus on the ultimate long-term goal of neonatal nurse practitioner, I stay motivated and focused to study and go through clinical experiences with high discipline.
Finally, a strong work ethic for life. No matter if I'm studying for exams, being involved in extracurriculars, or working part-time, I put my best into all these things with a lot of dedication and drive. Success certainly does dwell at the heart of hard work, and I am dedicated to making sure I put in the work ethic that will be needed to get me where I want to go. This work ethic will help me to a great extent in the NICU, because it is there where attention to detail, thoroughness, and diligence come foremost in rendering quality care.
In the future, my goals are oriented toward practicing as a neonatal nurse practitioner and delivering specialized care in the NICU to newborns. I am pursuing an education in nursing because doing so will let me follow my passion: making a positive difference in the lives of these patients and families. To me, leadership is initiative with integrity, compassion, and excellence. It consists of setting a good example, developing others in reaching their potential, and creating an environment where everybody is empowered to contribute. As a leader, I strive to be approachable, and supportive, looking for ways to succeed in everything.
Sheila A Burke Memorial Scholarship
Looking into the future of my nursing career, I have an abiding passion for working in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, where my practice will be committed to caring for the most vulnerable patients: newborns with little or no voices at all. Ultimately, I want to become a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner to gain the capacity to provide high-class, specialized care to these babies and their families. Compassion, competence, advocacy, and dedication to lifelong learning form the basis of this vision.
The environment of a NICU is unique and caring for premature and seriously ill newborns calls for special skills and knowledge. I envision myself, having expertise in neonatal physiology, detecting subtle changes in neonatal condition, and offering interventions that sometimes can even be life-saving. I am committed to lifelong learning, seeking out the latest advances regarding neonatal care to ensure I am always equipped to give the best outcomes for these fragile patients.
Ultimately, I want to become a neonatal nurse practitioner because it will put me at a more advanced level in the care of patients. As an NNP, I am to be autonomous about assessing, diagnosing, and managing the care of neonates. Being an NNP would empower me to make critical decisions, develop care plans, and carry out procedures integral to these tiny patients. By achieving this level of expertise, I will have a better platform from which to advocate for my patients and work to assure the highest possible quality of care for them.
The single most impactful feature about my vision is serving as the voice for those unable to speak for themselves. Newborns in the NICU are among the most vulnerable patients, and it has been my passion to serve as an advocate, caregiver, and protector for these tiny babies. At the very core of my nursing philosophy is treatment that addresses not only a medical but also a compassionate and empathetic nature. That means being attentive to comfort and pain levels of these infants, understanding the stress and anxiety their families may be undergoing, and giving support that goes beyond clinical care. I want to foster a setting where every infant and his or her family feel understood and supported during their stay in the NICU.
Providing support to the families is a critical factor during the devastating experience of having a newborn infant with them in the NICU. I envision myself as an advocate and guide to these families during their neonatal care journey. This includes educating them about the condition of their baby, involving them in decisions concerning care, and offering emotional support. By building good relationships, based on trust, with the families involved, I feel I am able to provide a much more positive and healing environment for the babies and their loved ones.
I am dedicated to lifelong learning and professional growth so that I can be prepared to provide the best care possible. Neonatal care is changing almost daily, and thus, my goals include advanced education, attending conferences, and engaging in research at the forefront of these changes. As a neonatal nurse practitioner, I also intend to seek opportunities where I can mentor and teach other nurses to increase my knowledge base and experience and improve the level of care provided within the NICU.
Finally, embracing innovation and technology would form an integral part of my vision. Technology is a great companion in the NICU, considering neonates have to be closely monitored and treated. I feel very comfortable with the most current life-sustaining medical technologies, like mechanical ventilators, incubators, and electronic health records, for the betterment of patient care. I will also want to be kept abreast of innovations in non-invasive monitoring techniques, neonatal surgery, and such other neonatal care disciplines so my practice remains current for the best care of my patients.
As my career grows, so does my aspiration to take up leadership roles that better place me in a position to effectively advocate for neonatal patients and their families at larger levels. This could entail serving on hospital committees, participating in policy development, or even working in community outreach programs designed to improve health care to mothers and neonates. In this advocacy for better resources, policies, and education, I give all newborns a better chance at life, no matter what their situations may be.
This will foster a collaborative, non-competitive NICU environment. After all, the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit is an advanced setup that requires proper working coordination amongst the multi-disciplinary teams of healthcare professionals: Doctors, Nurses, Respiratory Therapists, and Social Workers. I dream of creating an atmosphere of collaboration where everybody's expertise will come into play in an integrated way of care delivery. It will help me to create a supportive atmosphere that will benefit not only the staff but also the patients we serve by encouraging open communication and teamwork.
Conclusion: My vision for myself as a nurse is literally taking care of neonates. This was the reason that compelled me to practice in a NICU and further my career to become a neonatal nurse practitioner, so I can give my smallest and most vulnerable patients the highest quality of care possible. Through caring, learning, and advocacy, I want to be able to make a difference in these infants' lives and the lives of their families by ensuring that even the smallest voices are heard and cared for with great respect and dedication.
