Hi! My name is Victoria: a current high school senior at Damien Memorial School, born into a family of four. My mother worked hard to afford her children the opportunity to study with private institutions and I will work hard to help her throughout my life. I hope to stay in Hawaii for college to pursue my dreams in studying psychology to become involved in the field of mental health therapy.

In today’s society, addressing the mental health crisis is more critical than ever. With the rise of technology and social media, taking care of our well-being is important. I had experience dealing with an issue I’ve been struggling with since my freshman year. I was sexually assaulted and I had no clue what to do; just like all those speeches about bullying, I told a trusted adult, my mom: but she did nothing. So a year later I tried something different; I told another trusted adult and they tried to help, but they included my mom. I got a therapist and she helped me understand how to approach my situation and comforted me throughout our sessions, but my mom thought that I might be pressured to say things during my sessions as a way to get me to confess to something that never happened: but they did. When I knew what happened to me was wrong and that I shouldn’t stay quiet, my mom told me to stop seeing my therapist. During every session, I felt aware of everything that was happening to me, but there were no words to describe how I was feeling during that time. Now, in my Senior Year at Damien, I’m taking a class that has helped me understand our natural human behaviors. I’ve studied topics that explain different reasons that affect things like: why people gamble, how people believe their opinion is superior, and how people develop their personality. This class is what I want to major in when I go to college, and hopefully, I can pursue my future field and career through my experiences—Psychology.
