From a young age, I have been captivated by both the arts and the sciences. As a dedicated ballet dancer, I have spent years refining my craft, understanding movement, and expressing emotions through motion. However, my passion for dance has also sparked a deep curiosity about the science behind movement, the brain’s role in motor function, and how artistic expression can impact cognitive development. This intersection between dance and neuroscience has fueled my desire to pursue a career in STEM, specifically in the field of neuroscience. I plan to study neuroscience with a focus on movement science and cognitive function. My goal is to explore how dance and other forms of artistic expression influence brain plasticity, motor learning, and mental health. The connection between movement and the brain fascinates me, how muscle memory is formed, how dance can be used as therapy for neurological disorders, and how creative movement enhances cognitive function. By studying neuroscience, I hope to bridge the gap between art and science, uncovering the neurological mechanisms that make dance such a powerful tool for both physical and mental well-being. Beyond research, I am passionate about applying this knowledge to real-world settings. I aspire to work in rehabilitation and therapy, using dance-based interventions to aid individuals recovering from neurological injuries such as strokes or neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson’s. Movement has transformative healing properties, and I want to contribute to the growing field of dance therapy by providing scientific backing and innovative therapeutic approaches that integrate art with medicine. Additionally, I am interested in advocating for the inclusion of arts in STEM education. Writing has always been a powerful way for me to express myself, explore my passions, and connect with others. As a dancer, writing allows me to articulate the emotions, experiences, and lessons that movement alone cannot fully convey. Whether through personal reflections, analytical essays, or creative storytelling, writing about dance has deepened my appreciation for the art form and helped me share its impact with a broader audience. One of the aspects I love most about writing is its ability to preserve moments and emotions that might otherwise be fleeting. Dance is an ephemeral art, existing in the moment it is performed. However, writing gives me the ability to capture the feelings of a performance, the intensity of a leap, the softness of a gesture, or the emotional weight of a piece, so that they can be revisited and shared. Through journaling, poetry, and essays, I can translate the physicality of dance into words, allowing me to relive and reflect on my experiences in new ways. Writing has also been a way for me to analyze and understand the deeper meanings behind dance. When I write about choreography, I consider the intention behind each movement, the story being told, and the cultural or historical significance of a piece. This process not only enhances my performances but also helps me articulate the value of dance to those who may not be familiar with it. By combining my love for writing with my knowledge of dance, I aim to bridge the gap between movement and language, making dance more accessible and meaningful to others. As I transition into college, I plan to continue writing about dance in various capacities. First, I hope to contribute to my university’s art publications or start a blog where I can document my experiences as a dancer. Writing reviews of performances, interviewing fellow dancers, and sharing insights on the connection between dance and personal growth are all ways I plan to stay engaged with both writing and dance. Additionally, I am interested in researching the intersection of dance and neuroscience, exploring how movement affects brain development and cognition. Writing will be essential in this endeavor, as it will allow me to articulate my findings, craft research papers, and contribute to academic discussions in this field. By combining my passion for writing with scientific inquiry, I hope to shed light on the cognitive benefits of dance and advocate for its importance in education and therapy. Beyond academic writing, I plan to continue using writing as a personal creative outlet. Whether through poetry inspired by movement, reflective essays on my experiences in the studio, or short stories that weave dance into their narratives, I want to keep exploring the ways writing and dance intertwine. Writing provides me with a sense of clarity and purpose, helping me process my thoughts and emotions while deepening my understanding of my artistic journey. Ultimately, writing is more than just a skill or hobby for me,it is a way of thinking, feeling, and sharing my passion for dance with the world. In college, I will continue to embrace writing as a tool for self-expression, education, and advocacy. Whether through research, journalism, or creative exploration, writing will remain an integral part of my journey, allowing me to celebrate dance in all its beauty and complexity.

Every year, my town hosts the annual festival, Operation Pumpkin, a gathering that celebrates creativity, culture, and connection. As a passionate dancer, I have had the privilege of performing at this festival for two years. This event is more than just an opportunity to showcase artistic talent, it is a space where people from everywhere come together to share their love for the arts. Through dance, music, painting, and theater our community strengthens its bond and fosters an appreciation for creative expression. Operation Pumpkin takes place in the heart of our town, transforming our main square into a lively exhibition of talent. Local artists display their work, musicians fill the air with melodies, and dancers take the stage to captivate the audience. For me, performing at this event is an unparalleled experience. Every year, my school prepares a piece that embodies emotion. Dancing in front of a supportive audience, knowing that my art is making an impact is amazing. One of the festival's aspects is the way it brings people together. I have witnessed young children mesmerized by their first ballet performance, aspiring artists finding inspiration, and elderly community members reminiscing about their creative pasts. The festival fosters a sense of belonging, bridging generational and cultural gaps through the universal language of art. It is a reminder that the arts have the power to unite and heal, making our community stronger. Participating in this event has deepened my understanding of the importance of arts education. Many children in our town do not have access to quality arts programs due to budget cuts in schools. Seeing their excitement during the festival, I realized how much exposure to the arts can inspire and uplift young minds. This realization led me to volunteer with a local organization that provides free dance classes to underprivileged children. I hope that by sharing my passion, I can ignite a love for dance in them and give them an outlet for self-expression. While Operation Pumpkin has already made a significant impact, I envision even greater changes as a result of this event. One of my hopes is that it will inspire more investment in local arts programs. By demonstrating the power of creative expression, the festival could encourage schools and community centers to prioritize arts education, ensuring that every child has access to the experience of dance, music, and visual arts. Additionally, I would love to see the festival expand its outreach to underserved areas. By organizing smaller, year-round arts events in different neighborhoods, we could ensure that the festival’s influence extends beyond a single weekend. This would provide opportunities for people to engage with the arts, fostering a more inclusive and culturally enriched community. Another positive change I hope to see is increased collaboration between artists and local businesses. By partnering with cafes, bookstores, and other establishments, we could create pop-up galleries and performances that bring art into everyday spaces. This would not only support local artists but also make creative expression a more integral part of our town’s identity. Operation Pumpkin is more than an event, it is a movement that cultivates inspiration, unity, and cultural appreciation. Being a part of it has reinforced my belief in the power of the arts to shape communities and change lives. As I continue my journey in dance, I hope to explore even deeper ways in which artistic expression can contribute to human development. My dream is that through this festival our community will continue to flourish as a place where creativity is nurtured. Every individual is encouraged to express themselves through the beauty of the arts.

Dance has been a constant in my life, shaping who I am and providing me with an outlet for expression, emotion, and creativity. From a young age, I was drawn to movement, fascinated by the way the body could communicate and connect. However, as I grew older, my curiosity extended beyond the physical aspects of dance. I began to wonder how movement affected the brain, and how dancing could influence cognitive function, emotional health, and well-being. This interest in both dance and neuroscience has led me to pursue a career that integrates both fields, and I am excited to contribute to the growing body of knowledge at the intersection of dance and science. Throughout my years of dancing, I have noticed how much movement can impact my mood, thoughts, and sense of self. When I dance, I feel an undeniable sense of release, a way to connect my body and mind. I can process emotions through movement, which helps me deal with stress and anxiety. What intrigued me, however, was the science behind these feelings—what was happening in my brain when I danced? Why did I feel so much better, both mentally and physically, after a dance session? This curiosity pushed me to explore how dance affects the brain and how movement can be used as a tool for cognitive development and mental health improvement. I discovered that dance has profound effects on the brain, particularly in terms of neuroplasticity. Neuroplasticity refers to the brain’s ability to reorganize itself by forming new neural connections throughout life, particularly when learning new skills or experiencing challenges. Dance promotes neuroplasticity. When learning a new routine or technique, the brain is constantly forming and strengthening new connections to improve coordination, memory, and motor skills. This process is especially important for young people whose brains are still developing. Dance can stimulate cognitive function, improve focus, and enhance memory. Furthermore, research has shown that movement-based activities like dance can increase the production of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a protein that plays a crucial role in brain function, learning, and memory. In addition to its cognitive benefits, dance is also a powerful tool for emotional and mental health. I have personally experienced how dance can help reduce stress, alleviate symptoms of anxiety and depression, and foster a sense of well-being. By engaging in dance, individuals can release emotional tension, regulate mood, and increase levels of endorphins and dopamine—neurotransmitters that contribute to happiness and emotional stability. This is why I’m passionate about studying how dance can be integrated into therapeutic settings to help those struggling with mental health challenges. As I look ahead to my career in both neuroscience and dance, my goal is to contribute to the field by studying how movement can be used to promote brain health, enhance cognitive function, and improve emotional well-being. I plan to focus on the therapeutic aspects of dance, particularly its potential to help individuals with mental health disorders or neurodevelopmental conditions like autism and ADHD. By combining my love for dance with my interest in neuroscience, I hope to develop programs that use movement to improve cognitive and emotional development in children and adults alike. In conclusion, my passion for dance and neuroscience has driven me to pursue a career that merges both fields. I am excited to contribute to the growing body of research on how movement affects the brain, and I am committed to using this knowledge to improve the lives of others. Through my studies and future work, I hope to create programs and interventions that use dance to foster cognitive growth, emotional healing, and well-being.

Dance has always been an integral part of my life. It’s not just something I do; it’s a part of who I am. From a young age, I felt an undeniable connection to movement. It was never just about the choreography, the rhythm, or the artistic expression. It was about something deeper, something innate that stirred within me. Dance became a way for me to communicate my feelings, my experiences, and my very essence. Over the years, I’ve come to understand that dance does far more than just move our bodies, it has the power to shape our minds and influence the way we perceive the world around us. As I’ve deepened my involvement with dance, I’ve become fascinated with how this form of movement can affect the brain’s growth and development, and I am eager to study it in greater depth. This curiosity about the intersection of dance and neuroscience has led me to pursue a degree that combines both fields. Through this degree, I hope to explore how dance can foster brain development, and emotional growth, and even be used therapeutically to improve mental health. From the first time I stepped into a dance studio, I was hooked. As I learned more about various styles of dance, from ballet to contemporary to hip-hop, each movement offered something new. In ballet, I found a discipline and precision that helped me focus and channel my energy. Contemporary dance offered me the opportunity to express deep and often complex emotions. Hip-hop pushed my creativity and encouraged me to break through boundaries and embrace new ideas. Over time, I began to realize that dance was more than just an art form; it was a powerful way to connect with others, express my emotions, and build my confidence. But as I spent more time in the studio, I began to wonder: what is happening in my brain when I dance? Why does movement make me feel so much more than just physical exertion? And how does this process impact my brain's growth and development? As I grew older, I found myself drawn not only to the art of dance but also to the science behind it. How could something as abstract as movement affect our emotions, thoughts, and even cognitive abilities? My curiosity grew as I realized that the effects of dance went beyond just feeling good after a performance. There was something more happening beneath the surface. What intrigued me most was the concept of neuroplasticity, the brain's ability to reorganize itself by forming new neural connections in response to learning and experience. This process is essential for learning new skills and adapting to change, particularly during developmental years such as adolescence. I began to wonder how dance might be contributing to the brain's plasticity and how it could be used to support cognitive and emotional development, especially in young people. What I found was both fascinating and inspiring. Numerous studies have shown that dance has a profound impact on the brain. Dance is not only an emotional and artistic experience, it’s also a cognitive and physical one. As a dancer, learning new routines and complex choreography requires me to engage both my body and brain simultaneously. Each step, each movement, requires coordination and concentration. Over time, my brain strengthens neural pathways that help me remember the choreography and synchronize my movements with music. This connection between the body and the brain is critical to motor development and coordination. But it also contributes to cognitive function, memory, and problem-solving skills. Research has demonstrated that physical exercise, including dance, enhances cognitive performance and promotes brain health by increasing the production of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a protein essential for brain function and development. In addition to its cognitive benefits, dance has been shown to improve mental health by reducing stress, anxiety, and depression. This aspect of dance intrigued me because I, like many people, have struggled with mental health challenges, particularly during my adolescence. I was dealing with stress, self-doubt, and the overwhelming emotions that come with the ups and downs of teenage life. During those times, dance became my outlet. When I danced, I felt free. The stress I carried throughout the day seemed to melt away with each movement. The rhythm and flow of the music allowed me to focus entirely on the present moment, which calmed my mind and helped me manage my emotions. It wasn’t just a form of exercise, it was therapeutic. What I didn’t fully understand at the time, but what I now recognize, is that dance triggered chemical responses in my brain that were making me feel better. Movement stimulates the release of endorphins and dopamine, two neurotransmitters that are crucial for regulating mood and emotional well-being. These chemical responses are why physical activity, especially dance, can significantly reduce stress and improve mental health. This realization deepened my interest in the therapeutic benefits of dance. I wanted to know more about how dance could be used as a tool to improve mental health, not just for me, but for others. Through my research, I discovered that dance therapy, also known as movement therapy, is an established field that uses movement to treat a variety of mental health conditions, including depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Dance therapy encourages individuals to express themselves through movement, which can lead to emotional release, greater self-awareness, and improved body image. This form of therapy has proven to be particularly effective for individuals who struggle with verbal expression, allowing them to communicate complex emotions and experiences through their bodies. As I explored the therapeutic potential of dance, I also began to recognize its importance in the developmental stages of children and adolescents. Adolescence is a time of rapid brain development, and the brain is highly receptive to learning and change during this period. I believe that dance can play a crucial role in supporting cognitive, emotional, and social development in young people. Dance encourages focus, improves memory, and enhances motor coordination. But beyond the cognitive benefits, it also helps young people build emotional resilience, develop confidence, and express their identities. Dance provides a healthy outlet for emotions that might otherwise be bottled up, allowing adolescents to process their experiences productively. I am particularly interested in researching how dance can be integrated into educational settings to enhance brain development in children and adolescents. By incorporating dance into the curriculum, we can create a more holistic learning experience that not only fosters academic skills but also nurtures emotional and social development. Dance can help students build discipline, focus, and self-esteem while also improving their physical health. I want to explore how dance can be used in schools as a tool for improving cognitive function, promoting positive mental health, and encouraging collaboration among students. Furthermore, I’m eager to explore how dance can be used to help individuals with neurodevelopmental disorders such as ADHD or autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Research has shown that dance can improve motor skills, social interaction, and emotional regulation in individuals with these conditions. By studying how dance can be adapted to meet the needs of these populations, I hope to develop programs that provide them with the tools they need to thrive. I believe that through targeted interventions, dance can be a powerful tool for improving the lives of individuals with special needs, fostering their development, and helping them build meaningful connections with others. As I look to the future, I am excited about the possibility of combining my passion for dance with my interest in neuroscience to create innovative programs and research that explore the relationship between movement and brain development. I hope to develop initiatives that bring together dance and neuroscience to improve mental health, cognitive function, and emotional resilience for individuals of all ages. Whether through educational programs in schools, therapeutic interventions for individuals with mental health challenges, or innovative research on the neuroplastic benefits of dance, I am committed to using my knowledge to make a positive impact on the world. In conclusion, my passion for dance and neuroscience is driven by a deep curiosity about how movement affects the brain and the body. I believe that dance has the potential to transform lives by enhancing brain development, improving mental health, and promoting emotional well-being. As I pursue my degree in both fields, I look forward to exploring the intersection between dance and the brain and using this knowledge to create programs that can make a lasting impact on individuals and communities. By combining my love for dance with my interest in neuroscience, I hope to contribute to a greater understanding of how movement can shape the mind and improve overall quality of life.

Growing up, I always struggled to fit in. Whether it was in school, with my friends, or in my family, I felt like I was constantly searching for a place where I truly belonged. But there was one place where I always felt accepted and free, my dance studio. In the studio, I could be myself. I didn’t have to explain my identity or worry about fitting into any boxes. The dance community provided me with a sense of belonging and support that I hadn’t found anywhere else, especially when I was coming to terms with my bisexuality. From a young age, I knew that I didn’t fit into the traditional mold of heterosexuality. I found myself drawn to both girls and boys, but I was afraid to acknowledge those feelings, especially in a world that often made me feel like being different was something to be ashamed of. My friends and family didn’t always understand, and I felt isolated, unsure of where I could go to feel seen and understood. This sense of isolation only intensified when I entered high school, where the pressures of fitting in felt more intense than ever. However, when I walked into the dance studio, something changed. The world of dance, especially the community of dancers I was surrounded by, was filled with people who weren’t afraid to express themselves. Many of the people I met were part of the LGBTQIA+ community, and they helped me feel safe in a way that I hadn’t experienced before. Through their openness, courage, and unwavering sense of self, I was able to understand that it was okay to be different. I learned that I didn’t have to hide my bisexuality or deny my feelings. It was just a part of who I was, and that was okay. One particular moment that stands out to me was when a fellow dancer shared their experience of coming out as transgender. I had known this person for years, and I admired their strength in expressing their true self. Listening to their story made me realize how important it was for people like me, those who may feel unsure or isolated, to find communities where they could express themselves freely. That moment planted a seed of activism in my heart. I realized that I wanted to be part of a movement that created more spaces like the dance studio, safe, accepting, and inclusive. Regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. This experience shaped my future activism goals. I plan to advocate for more inclusive spaces for LGBTQIA+ individuals, especially in the arts. I want to create environments where young people can explore their identities through creative outlets like dance, music, or theater without fear of judgment or discrimination. The power of art, especially in the LGBTQIA+ community, is undeniable. It has the potential to heal, empower, and create change, and I want to use my own experience as a platform to help others who may feel the same way I once did. In conclusion, my journey to accepting my bisexuality has been deeply influenced by my experiences within the LGBTQIA+ community, especially through my time in the dance studio. It was in that space where I found acceptance and understanding, and it inspired me to use my future to advocate for others who may be struggling with their identity. Dance taught me that being different is not something to hide, but something to embrace. I want to make sure that others have the same opportunity to feel seen, heard, and celebrated for who they truly are.

Dance has always been a part of who I am. From the moment I stepped into a studio, I felt a connection to a movement that was undeniable. It wasn’t just about learning the steps or performing for an audience; dance became a language to express my emotions, thoughts, and stories. For me, dance is much more than an art form, it’s a way of life, a way to connect with others, and a tool for growth. I’ve been passionate about dance for as long as I can remember. From ballet to contemporary to hip-hop, each style has taught me something new. Ballet has helped me understand discipline and grace, while contemporary has allowed me to express deep emotions. Hip-hop has challenged me to push my boundaries and embrace creativity. The diversity in styles has kept me engaged and excited about learning, providing me with the tools to express myself in different ways. Dance has never been just a hobby; it has been a constant source of joy, confidence, and fulfillment. One of the most powerful things dance has given me is the ability to communicate without words. There have been times when words were not enough to explain what I was feeling, but through dance, I found a way to share my emotions with others. Whether I’m performing on stage or simply moving in the studio, dance allows me to speak from the heart. It has been a form of therapy, especially during difficult times when I felt overwhelmed by stress or sadness. Movement allows me to release those emotions healthily, making me feel more balanced and at peace. Dance has also had a profound impact on those around me. I have had the privilege of teaching younger children at my dance studio, and watching them discover the joy of movement has been incredibly rewarding. It’s amazing to see how dance can boost their confidence, build self-esteem, and help them express themselves. I’ve seen children come into the studio shy and unsure of themselves, only to leave with smiles on their faces, excited to return. Watching them grow through dance reminds me of how much this art form has the power to transform lives. Beyond the studio, dance has played a role in connecting me with others. In high school, I was involved in group dance performances, and it was through these experiences that I saw how dance brings people together. Whether rehearsing for a competition or preparing for a performance, teamwork, and collaboration created bonds that extended beyond the studio. I learned how to communicate with my peers, work toward a common goal, and support each other. Dance taught me the value of unity and the importance of working together to create something greater than what we could achieve individually. Through dance, I’ve also learned about discipline, perseverance, and resilience. It takes hard work to improve, and there have been times when I’ve felt frustrated by my progress. But each challenge has made me stronger and more determined to keep going. I’ve learned to be patient with myself and celebrate small victories along the way. In conclusion, dance has been a source of strength, expression, and connection in my life. It has helped me overcome personal challenges, build relationships, and discover my true self. The power of dance goes beyond the stage, it can heal, inspire, and bring people together. I’m passionate about dance because of the way it has shaped my life and the lives of those around me. It’s more than just an art form; it’s a way to share who we are with the world.

For most of my life, I struggled to fit in. Growing up, I felt like I didn’t belong anywhere, and the bullying I faced made me question everything about myself. From elementary school through my sophomore year of high school, I was constantly picked on for being different. My love for dance and my interest in science set me apart from my peers. I felt like an outsider, even in the things I was passionate about. It wasn’t until my junior year that I started to find confidence in myself and realize that my differences made me stronger. Dance became my safe place. It was where I could express myself without being judged. Every time I stepped into the studio, I felt free from the negativity and the pressure to fit in. At first, I danced to escape, but over time, I realized that dance was more than just a way to cope. It gave me confidence, discipline, and resilience. I learned how to push through challenges and how to channel my emotions into something positive. Dance helped me discover who I was. At the same time, I found a similar escape in science, especially neuroscience. I was fascinated by how the brain works and how it affects the way we think, feel, and move. When I started researching the connection between physical activity and brain development, I discovered how dance can impact mental health. It can improve focus, reduce stress, and boost confidence. This connection between dance and science made me realize I could use my passions to make a difference. The challenges I faced in my life have shaped my dreams for the future. I know what it feels like to be isolated, to feel like you don’t belong, and I don’t want anyone else to feel that way. Adolescence is a critical time for brain development, but it’s also a time when so many teens deal with anxiety, self-doubt, and bullying. I want to create programs that use dance as a tool to help teenagers process their emotions, build their confidence, and find a safe space to express themselves. I imagine starting therapeutic dance workshops and school programs that combine movement with mental health support. This scholarship would mean so much to me. My family has always supported my dreams, but the cost of college is a big challenge. With this scholarship, I could focus on my studies and research without the stress of financial strain. It would help me move closer to my goal of pursuing degrees in both neuroscience and dance, so I can turn my passion into a career that helps others. My ultimate goal is to create change, not just in the field of STEM but in society as a whole. I want to use my experiences and my knowledge to support young people who feel like they don’t belong. The struggles I’ve faced have taught me that challenges can make you stronger and that being different is not a weakness. Through dance and neuroscience, I have found my purpose. With the support of this scholarship, I know I can make a difference in the lives of others and help them find their place, just like I found mine.
    Global Girls In STEM Scholarship
From the outside, dance, and neuroscience might seem like two completely different fields. But for me, they are deeply connected. As a dancer and a student passionate about STEM, I’ve discovered how movement affects the brain, especially during adolescence, a time of significant physical and mental development. My journey in STEM has not only shaped my career aspirations but also inspired me to combine my two passions to better understand how dance can positively impact the adolescent brain. My interest in STEM began during middle school when I attended my first science fair and became fascinated by the way our brains process information. That initial spark grew during high school, where I immersed myself in biology and psychology classes. At the same time, my dedication to dance deepened as I trained in various styles, competed in events, and explored the physical and emotional benefits of movement. These two worlds collided when I stumbled upon research about how physical activity, like dance, influences neuroplasticity and brain development, especially in young people. As a young woman in STEM, I’ve faced challenges, including stereotypes about who “belongs” in science. It hasn’t always been easy to prove my abilities in traditionally male-dominated spaces, but I have learned to use my experiences as motivation to push forward. Joining my school’s neuroscience club allowed me to find a supportive community of like-minded peers. I contributed to group projects, such as research on memory and cognitive development, which gave me valuable experience and reinforced my passion for studying the brain. One of the biggest challenges I’ve faced is explaining my vision to others. People often question how dance and neuroscience connect, but I see them as complementary. Adolescence is a crucial time for brain development, and many teens face challenges like stress, anxiety, and low self-esteem. Dance has been proven to reduce stress, improve cognitive function, and enhance emotional regulation. I want to explore these effects further, combining my scientific background with my passion for movement to create programs that use dance as a therapeutic tool for young people. My extracurricular activities have helped me develop leadership skills that will be essential as I pursue this path. I have led workshops at my dance studio, where I introduced younger dancers to mindfulness techniques that improve focus and relaxation. I also co-led a STEM mentorship program at my school, where I encouraged younger students, particularly girls, to explore neuroscience and biology. These experiences taught me how to communicate effectively, inspire others, and take initiative. My passion for STEM drives me because it offers endless opportunities to solve real-world problems. Combining neuroscience with dance gives me the chance to make a difference in how we approach mental health and education. I plan to major in both dance and neuroscience in college, to research how movement impacts the adolescent brain. My dream is to create programs that integrate dance into schools and therapy settings, helping young people build resilience, improve cognitive function, and enhance their emotional well-being. Through my experiences in STEM and dance, I’ve learned that innovation often comes from unexpected connections. The challenges I’ve faced have made me more determined to pursue my goals and use my skills to create change. I’m excited to keep learning, growing, and finding ways to combine my love for science and movement to help others thrive during one of the most important stages of life.
    Jack D. McWilliams, Sr. Scholarship
Dance has been a huge part of my life for as long as I can remember. From the moment I first stepped into a studio, I knew it was more than just an after-school activity. Dance became my passion, my escape, and the thing that brought me the most joy. Over the years, it has shaped who I am, both as a dancer and as a person. Through dance, I have developed my strengths, explored new interests, and set goals that inspire me to grow and move forward. One of my biggest strengths is determination. Dance takes a lot of commitment, both physically and mentally, and I have always been willing to put in the work. Whether it’s spending hours perfecting choreography, learning a challenging move, or preparing for a big performance, I give everything I have to succeed. This determination has taught me how to push through tough times and stay focused, which has helped me in school and other parts of my life. Another strength I’m proud of is my ability to connect with people. Dance is a team effort and I’ve learned how important it is to work well with others. Whether I’m performing in a group routine or rehearsing with my classmates, I try to encourage those around me and contribute to a positive environment. I’ve realized that dance isn’t just about individual talent but about working together to create something amazing. My experiences in dance have been diverse and meaningful. I have trained in styles like ballet, contemporary, jazz, and hip-hop, and each one has taught me something different. Ballet showed me the importance of precision and grace, while contemporary helped me express emotions through movement. Jazz and hip-hop pushed me out of my comfort zone and taught me to take creative risks. Each style has helped me grow not just as a dancer but as someone willing to try new things and embrace challenges. Outside of the studio, I’ve also used dance to help others. One of the most rewarding experiences has been teaching dance workshops to younger kids in my community. I love seeing how dance builds their confidence and gives them a way to express themselves. It reminds me of how I felt when I started dancing. These experiences have inspired me to keep using my passion to make a difference for others. I’m also really interested in the cultural and historical side of dance. Learning about how different cultures express themselves through movement has helped me appreciate what dance means to people everywhere. I’ve also become curious about how dance can be used in fields like therapy or education to help improve people's mental health and personal growth. Looking ahead, I have big goals for my future in dance. I plan to study dance in college so I can improve my skills, learn from experts, and prepare for a career that combines performing, teaching, and making a difference in the world. My ultimate dream is to open a community dance center where people of all ages and backgrounds can come together, learn, and grow. I want to use dance to inspire others and show them that it’s not just an art form but also a way to build confidence and connect with others. Dance has taught me so much about hard work, creativity, and resilience. It has shaped the person I am today and will continue to guide me as I work toward my goals. I’m excited to see where this journey takes me and how I can share my passion with others while making a positive impact on my community.
    Nickels Student Athlete Scholarship
Being a student-athlete in dance has been one of the most rewarding yet challenging experiences of my high school career. It required me to strike a balance between rigorous academic responsibilities and the physical and emotional demands of dance. Through it all, I have grown stronger, more disciplined, and more resilient, learning lessons that will shape my future far beyond the dance floor. One of the most significant challenges I faced as a student-athlete was managing my time. Dance is a unique athletic pursuit because it combines artistry with the physical intensity of a sport. My schedule was often packed with long rehearsals, performances, and competitions, leaving little time for studying, rest, or socializing. I frequently found myself staying up late to finish homework after hours of practice. This constant juggling act forced me to develop excellent time-management skills. I learned to prioritize tasks, use my time efficiently, and remain organized. While it was not easy, the experience taught me how to stay focused under pressure, a skill I know will benefit me in college and beyond. Another challenge was the physical toll that dance took on my body. Like any athlete, I faced the risk of injuries and maintaining peak performance required consistent effort. There were days when my muscles ached, my feet were blistered, and exhaustion weighed heavily on me. Despite these struggles, I refused to give up because of my deep passion for dance. I learned the importance of listening to my body, seeking help when needed, and finding a balance between pushing myself and taking time to recover. This lesson was invaluable, as it taught me that self-care is essential for success, both physically and mentally. Being a dancer also presented emotional challenges. Dance is not just a sport; it is an art form that demands vulnerability and self-expression. Competing in front of judges, performing in front of large audiences, and dealing with criticism required immense courage. There were times when I doubted myself, comparing my abilities to others and wondering if I was good enough. Overcoming these insecurities was a process, but it taught me to build confidence in my abilities and embrace my unique style. I learned that growth comes not from perfection but from perseverance and a willingness to learn from every experience. Despite the challenges, being a student-athlete taught me valuable life lessons. One of the most important was the value of teamwork. Dance often involves working as part of a group, and I learned how to communicate effectively, support my teammates, and contribute to a shared goal. These skills will serve me well in any collaborative environment I encounter in the future. Another lesson was the power of resilience. The setbacks I experienced, whether in academics or dance, taught me how to keep going even when things got tough. I learned to view challenges as opportunities to grow and develop, rather than obstacles to avoid. This mindset has not only helped me improve as a dancer but has also prepared me to face any challenge that life may throw my way. Being a student-athlete in dance has shaped me into the person I am today. It has taught me discipline, time management, resilience, and the importance of self-care. While it was not always easy, the experience has been incredibly rewarding, and I am proud of the person I have become. As I move forward, I know that the lessons I learned as a student-athlete will guide me in achieving my goals and pursuing my dreams.
    Matthew E. Minor Memorial Scholarship
Dancing has been my passion for as long as I can remember. From the first moment I stepped into a dance studio, I felt an indescribable sense of freedom and joy. Dance is not just a form of expression for me; it is a way to connect with others, celebrate culture, and contribute to my community. As I prepare to pursue higher education in dance, I am eager to expand my skills, share my passion with others, and continue making a difference in my community. Growing up, I sought opportunities to use my love of dance to give back. I volunteered at local community centers, teaching dance workshops for children and teens. These workshops were more than just an introduction to movement; they were safe spaces where participants could express themselves, build confidence, and form positive relationships. Many of the children I worked with faced challenges such as low self-esteem or difficult home environments, and I witnessed how dance gave them a sense of purpose and belonging. These experiences inspired me to see dance not just as an art form but as a powerful tool for community building. My community involvement also extends to advocating for the safety and well-being of children and youth, both in person and online. As someone who has witnessed the harmful effects of bullying, I am passionate about fostering a supportive environment for young people. I started a mentorship program at my high school that paired older students with younger ones to help ease the transition into high school. Through this program, I addressed issues like peer pressure, in-person bullying, and online harassment. I also conducted workshops to educate students about the dangers of cyberbullying and the importance of online safety, teaching them to recognize red flags, report abuse, and support their peers. These efforts created a more inclusive and empathetic school culture, where students felt safer and more connected. Financial need is a significant factor as I enter higher education. My family has always prioritized education, but limited resources have made it challenging to save for college. I have worked part-time jobs to contribute to my education fund, but tuition, books, and living expenses are daunting. A scholarship would alleviate some of this financial burden, allowing me to focus on my studies and community involvement. With a degree in dance, I aim to, not only refine my craft but also develop programs that use dance as a tool for social change, especially for underserved communities. Looking ahead, I see myself combining my passion for dance with my commitment to creating safe spaces for young people. I dream of opening a community dance center where children and teens can explore their creativity, build resilience, and find a sense of belonging. I also want to continue advocating for online safety, working with schools and organizations to educate parents and children about the importance of digital well-being. Through dance, I have learned that movement has the power to heal, inspire, and unite. As I embark on this journey into higher education, I am motivated not only by my love of dance but also by the desire to give back to my community. With the support of a scholarship, I am confident that I can make a lasting impact and help others find their voice, both on and off the dance floor.
    Kalia D. Davis Memorial Scholarship
I am deeply sorry for the loss of Kalia D. Davis, a truly remarkable young woman who lived a life full of kindness, excellence, and ambition. I hope to carry forward the values that Kalia embodied and ensure that her memory continues to inspire and make a lasting impact. The scholarship represents an extraordinary opportunity for me to pursue my passion for dance and bring my dreams to life. My ultimate goal is to earn a college degree in dance and, one day, open a studio that will serve as a haven for dancers of all ages. Dance has shaped who I am, given me a voice, and taught me the value of hard work and creativity. This scholarship would not only help alleviate the financial burden of college but also provide the support I need to pursue my dreams. For as long as I can remember, dance has been my source of joy and inspiration. It is more than just movement, it is my way of expressing emotions, building connections, and telling stories. Over the years, I have discovered a love for teaching and mentoring dancers. Watching their eyes light up as they master a new step or perform with confidence fills my heart with pride. These moments have fueled my desire to dedicate my life to dance and share its power with others. My vision is to open a dance studio that fosters creativity, confidence, and a community where dancers can feel supported and inspired to reach their fullest potential. Attending college is a critical step in achieving that vision. A degree in dance will equip me with the skills, artistic growth, and knowledge needed to succeed as a professional dancer and studio owner. College will provide opportunities to immerse myself in various dance styles, collaborate with talented instructors, and gain invaluable experience through performances and workshops. I also look forward to learning about the practical side of running a studio, including business management and building meaningful connections within the community. This education will be the foundation on which I build my dream. However, the cost of college is a challenge my family and I are working hard to overcome. The financial strain of tuition, books, and other expenses often feels overwhelming and I worry about how it might impact my ability to embrace this next chapter of my life. The scholarship would be a tremendous relief, allowing me to focus on my studies and growth as a dancer. With this scholarship, I would be able to seize every opportunity to refine my craft, participate in performances, and build connections that will shape my future. Beyond the financial support, this scholarship holds profound meaning for me. It represents a belief in my potential and a validation of my dreams. To receive this scholarship would be an honor, a reminder that my passion for dance and my dedication to building a brighter future are worth pursuing. I feel a sense of responsibility to carry forward the legacy of Kalia by embracing the same love for dance and commitment to excellence that she had for running. The scholarship would not only help me reach my goals but also inspire me to make a lasting impact on the dance community. It would enable me to transform my dreams into reality, creating a space where others can discover the same love for dance that has guided me. With the support of this scholarship, I will work tirelessly to achieve my goals, honor the memory of Kalia D. Davis, and ensure her spirit lives on through every step I take on this journey.
    Bros for Good Scholarship
This year, I have made a deliberate effort to become more involved in my community by volunteering my time at two places that are especially meaningful to me: my dance studio and a local animal shelter. These experiences have not only allowed me to contribute to my community but have also helped me grow as a person. Through these efforts, I have built connections with others, developed a deeper sense of responsibility, and found fulfillment in helping where I can. At the dance studio, I assist with classes for young children who are just starting their journey in dance. Dance has been a passion of mine for years, and sharing it with the next generation is an incredibly rewarding experience. My role involves helping the lead instructor by demonstrating movements, keeping the children engaged, and ensuring the class runs smoothly. Working with young dancers requires patience, as many are still learning how to follow instructions and build confidence in their abilities. I enjoy seeing their excitement when they master a new step or perform for the first time. Moments like those remind me of the joy dance can bring, not only as an art form but also as a way to build self-esteem and discipline. Teaching little ones has taught me the value of communication and creativity. Each child learns differently, and finding ways to keep them focused while still having fun is always a unique challenge. Whether it’s turning warm-ups into a game or using imaginative stories to help them remember routines, I have developed a greater appreciation for how important it is to meet children where they are. This role has not only strengthened my leadership skills but has also deepened my love for dance by allowing me to see it through the eyes of these eager learners. In addition to my time at the dance studio, I volunteer at a local animal shelter. This work is quite different from teaching dance but equally fulfilling. At the shelter, my responsibilities range from cleaning kennels and feeding animals to walking dogs and spending time with cats. I have always loved animals, and this role allows me to provide care and companionship to those waiting for their forever homes. Spending time with animals has a calming effect on me, but it also comes with challenges. Some of the animals are timid or scared, requiring extra patience and gentleness to help them feel safe. Over time, it is incredibly rewarding to see them become more trusting and ready for adoption. Working at the shelter has also connected me with a group of dedicated volunteers and staff who share a passion for animal welfare. Their commitment is inspiring, and I am proud to be part of a team that celebrates every adoption and every step forward for the animals we care for. The experience has taught me the importance of kindness and consistency, not just for the animals but in all areas of life. Through my volunteer work, I have gained a deeper understanding of what it means to be part of a community. It is about contributing time and energy to make a difference, no matter how small the action may seem. Whether it’s helping young children develop a love for dance or offering care to animals in need, I am proud to be involved in my community. These experiences have motivated me to continue finding ways to give back and reminded me of the impact we can all have when we work together.
    Padriac Routa Memorial Scholarship
Dance has always been more than just a hobby to me. It is a way of expressing myself, telling stories, and connecting with others. From the moment I took my first class, I knew dance was something special. It has the power to inspire, heal, and bring people together. My dream is to open my dance studio, where I can use creativity and passion to make a positive impact in the world. Growing up, dance became my safe place. It was where I could express my emotions, celebrate who I am, and find self-confidence. It taught me the importance of hard work, dedication, and teamwork. These lessons shaped me into who I am today and inspired me to want to create a space where others can experience the same growth and joy that I have found through dance. My studio will not just teach moves or routines but will focus on building confidence, community, and opportunities for everyone who takes even one class. One of my biggest goals is to make dance accessible to people who might not otherwise have the chance to take classes. I plan to offer scholarships, free programs, and special outreach classes for communities that lack resources. So many talented people out there never get to explore their potential because of financial or social barriers. I want to change that. By allowing people to experience dance, I wish to inspire them to dream bigger and believe in their abilities. Another way I can make an impact is by using dance to celebrate diversity. My studio will offer classes in different styles, such as ballet, hip-hop, jazz, contemporary, modern, pom, and some cultural dances. Each style has its own story and energy, and infusing them helps people appreciate different cultures and backgrounds. By sharing these styles, I want to create a space where people from all walks of life can come together, share their experiences, and build connections. In addition to teaching dance, my studio will also be a place for creativity and community. I want to host performances, workshops, and events that bring people together to celebrate art and talent. These events will highlight local dancers and provide opportunities for people to learn from professionals. I also want to include online classes and resources so people who can’t physically come to the studio can still be part of the community. Mental health is something I care deeply about, and, from experience, I know dance can play a big role in helping people feel better. Movement can reduce stress, and anxiety, and even help with depression. That’s why I want my studio to include programs like mindful movement, dance therapy, and yoga. These classes will focus on helping people find balance and strength in their lives while improving their overall well-being. Dance can also help people physically by improving strength, balance, and coordination. I want to hold special classes specifically designed to assist disabled individuals in regaining mobility and confidence. These sessions would incorporate therapeutic movements tailored to their unique needs, fostering physical recovery and emotional well-being. My ultimate goal is to create a space where everyone feels welcome and inspired. Dance can connect people to themselves and others in ways that words can’t. By helping people find their voice through movement, I believe my studio can make a real difference. It’s not just about dancing, but about creating confidence, understanding, and a sense of community. Through my studio, I hope to leave a positive mark on the world, one eight-count at a time.
    Our Destiny Our Future Scholarship
I plan to make a positive impact on the world by sharing the joy and freedom of dance and creating a space where people can express themselves, heal, and grow. Dance has always been a source of happiness and strength for me. It has the power to lift spirits, tell stories, and connect people in ways that words cannot. My dream is to own my dance studio one day, a place where anyone and everyone can come to feel safe, celebrated, and inspired. I want it to be more than a studio. I want it to be a home where people can find their confidence, discover their passion, and build lasting friendships. Dance is not just about movement. It is about emotion, self-expression, and community. Through dance, I have learned how to channel my emotions, whether I am feeling joy, sadness, or excitement. It is my outlet, my safe space, and the way I make sense of the world around me. I want to share that same gift with others by creating a space where they can feel understood and empowered. My studio will welcome people of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities. Whether someone is a child just learning to point their toes, a teenager looking for a creative outlet, or an adult searching for a way to unwind, I want them to feel like they belong. My studio will not only teach technique but will also emphasize creativity and mental well-being. I envision hosting classes that allow people to explore their emotions and push their boundaries, choreography workshops that encourage storytelling, and community events that bring people together to celebrate life and art. By fostering an inclusive and uplifting space, I hope to help people see their worth and potential, both on and off the dance floor. Dance has taught me the importance of self-expression and resilience, and I want others to experience the same life-changing benefits. Beyond the studio itself, I want my business to be a platform for giving back. I plan to offer scholarships to children who cannot afford lessons and partner with local organizations to provide free or discounted classes for underserved communities. I also want to host performances and events that raise money for important causes, such as mental health initiatives, education programs, and social justice movements. By aligning my studio with meaningful causes, I hope to use dance as a force for positive change and inspire others to get involved in their way. Dance has given me so much, including confidence, joy, and a sense of purpose, and I want to share those gifts with as many people as possible. I believe in the transformative power of the arts and the way they can bring people together. If I can make even one person smile, feel seen, or believe in themselves through dance, I will know I have made a difference. My dream of owning a dance studio is not just about running a business; it is about creating a ripple effect of joy and positivity. I believe happiness is contagious, and by spreading it through dance, I hope to inspire others to carry that same positivity into their own lives and communities.

This broader perspective has made the subject even more fascinating to me. Over time, math has become more than just a subject I excel in. It is a way of thinking, a tool for solving problems, and a source of inspiration. I love the sense of accomplishment that comes from breaking down a complex problem into manageable steps and arriving at the correct answer. The combination of my natural inclination toward math and the unwavering support of my teachers has made it a subject I genuinely love. As I pursue further studies and career opportunities, I am excited to continue using math to explore new ideas and solve meaningful challenges.
    Elijah's Helping Hand Scholarship Award
My journey to understanding my identity has been a rollercoaster of emotions, growth, and acceptance. Looking back, I can see how every struggle, doubt, and realization brought me closer to where I am now. It started in eighth grade when I first came out as a lesbian, a decision that felt monumental at the time but was only the beginning of my story. Realizing I was attracted to girls was both liberating and terrifying. I had always felt different from my peers, but I couldn’t quite put it into words. In middle school, those feelings grew louder. I found myself drawn to girls in ways I didn’t see reflected in the relationships around me. It was confusing and isolating, especially when I didn’t have anyone to talk to who could understand what I was going through. Coming out as a lesbian felt like leaping a cliff. I remember the fear of being judged or rejected, not just by friends and family but by society as a whole. When I finally said the words out loud, it felt like I was finally breaking free. For a while, that identity gave me a sense of belonging and clarity. I found comfort in knowing there was a community of people who shared my experiences, and for the first time, I felt seen. But as time passed, I started to notice something I couldn’t ignore. While I was still very much attracted to women, I began to feel a pull toward men and people of other genders. At first, I tried to bury those feelings. I told myself it was just a phase or a fleeting curiosity. Admitting that my identity might not be as clear-cut as I thought was scary. I worried that it would invalidate the journey I had already been through or make people think I was confused or insincere. The more I tried to suppress those feelings, the heavier they became. It felt like I was living in a box I had built for myself, one that no longer fit who I was. Slowly, I allowed myself to explore these emotions without judgment. I thought back to moments in my life that didn’t quite make sense before, and suddenly everything clicked. My attractions had always been more expansive than I realized. When I finally embraced the fact that I am bisexual, it felt like a weight had been lifted off my shoulders. It wasn’t just about putting a new label on myself, it was about acknowledging the full scope of who I am. I felt freer, more authentic, and more at peace than I ever had before. This journey hasn’t been easy. There were moments of doubt, fear, and loneliness. But through it all, I’ve learned to trust myself and honor my truth. I’ve also discovered the beauty of fluidity in identity and the strength that comes from embracing it. The LGBTQIA+ community has been my lifeline throughout this process, offering support, representation, and a reminder that I’m not alone. My experiences have shaped me into someone more compassionate, resilient, and unapologetically myself. And for that, I’m endlessly grateful.

This scholarship will be a huge step toward turning my dream into a reality, and I can’t wait to make a positive impact on the lives of young dancers.
    Larry Darnell Green Scholarship
When I was in second grade, my world changed forever. My father passed away, leaving a void that shaped not only my childhood but also my outlook on life. From that moment on, my mother became the sole provider, nurturer, and supporter in our family. Living in a single-parent household came with challenges, but it also taught me resilience, independence, and a deep sense of purpose. Those early years from second to fifth grade had a big impact on me as I learned to cope with grief and find strength in my education. Right after my father passed away, everything felt overwhelming. At such a young age, I didn’t fully understand the idea of loss, but I felt its weight in how my daily life changed. My mother, now the only one taking care of me and my brother, worked hard to support us. Her determination inspired me, but it also meant I had to take on responsibilities I wasn’t ready for. Simple tasks, like helping my younger brother with homework or making sure chores were done, became part of my routine. These responsibilities taught me maturity and accountability early on. At school, I faced both challenges and comfort. On one hand, it was hard to focus because of the grief and the emptiness of my father not being there. On the other hand, school gave me a sense of stability. It was a place where I could get away from the difficulties at home. My teachers and classmates became a support system, offering encouragement when I needed it most. I found comfort in my studies, using them as a way to channel my emotions and find purpose. Doing well in school wasn’t just about getting good grades—it was my way of making my father proud and honoring the sacrifices my mother made to give us a better future. Financially, our family struggled. There were times when school supplies or extracurricular activities felt like luxuries. Yet, these challenges pushed me to work harder. I learned the value of being resourceful and grateful for what I had. Programs like free lunch and school scholarships helped, and they reminded me of how important it is to support one another. Living in a single-parent household also opened my eyes to the struggles other people face. I saw firsthand how grief and financial difficulties can affect a family, and this understanding made me more empathetic. I became more aware of the importance of helping others and how even small acts of kindness can make a big difference. As I think about how my childhood has shaped me, I am committed to giving back to my community in meaningful ways. I want to mentor children from single-parent households, sharing my experiences to help them realize that their circumstances don’t have to define their potential. I also want to support educational programs that offer resources and help for families facing tough times. Whether through organizing school supply drives, volunteering with youth programs, or creating scholarships for students dealing with hardships, I want to be a source of hope for others. My father’s death was a turning point in my life, but it also inspired me to keep going, to succeed, and to give back. While I can’t change what happened, I can use my experiences to create a better future for myself and others who are going through similar struggles. Through education, strength, and compassion, I aim to honor my father’s memory and make a positive impact in my community.

The day my father passed away was the day my world shattered. It felt as though time stood still, yet life around me moved forward, indifferent to my loss. In an instant, everything changed. The person I looked up to the most, the man who had always been my anchor, was gone. His absence has affected me in every way imaginable, personally, academically, and financially, and has reshaped the person I am today. On a personal level, the loss of my father was like losing my compass. He was my guide, my protector, and my greatest cheerleader. Without him I felt untethered, lost in a void of uncertainty. I missed his laughter, his advice, and the way he made me feel understood. There were days when the pain was so massive it felt like a physical weight on my chest. When I was nine my stepdad became a part of my life. His presence eased some of the financial burden and brought a sense of stability to our family, for which I am deeply grateful. Yet, as our bond grew, his arrival could not fill the emotional void my father had left. The bond I shared with my dad was irreplaceable, and his absence left me longing for the unique connection we had. Academically, losing my father introduced challenges I never anticipated. School had always been my safe space, but after his passing, it became difficult to focus. Sitting in class or working on assignments felt meaningless compared to the enormity of my grief. I remember staring at my books with tears streaming down my face, overwhelmed by the weight of his absence. However, I knew I had to persevere because my father always believed in the value of education. I realized that achieving my goals would be the greatest tribute I could offer him. Slowly, I found the strength to keep going, leaning on supportive teachers, family, and friends. Over time, my grades recovered, and my determination to make him proud became the driving force behind my academic success. Financially, my father’s absence left a significant void. He had been the backbone of our family’s stability, and his loss forced us to make sacrifices. My stepdad’s contribution helped ease some of the strain, but I still felt a sense of responsibility to contribute. I took on a part-time job to help with expenses, juggling work, school, and grief. This experience taught me invaluable lessons about responsibility, resilience, and the value of hard work. Every challenge I overcame reminded me of my father’s strength and determination. I became more resourceful and focused on building a secure future, not just for myself, but for my family. My father may no longer be here physically, but his presence is woven into every aspect of my life. I hear his voice in my moments of doubt, urging me to keep going. I feel his love in the quiet moments when I miss him the most. His absence has left a void that will never be filled, but it has also given me a profound sense of purpose. The loss of my father has shaped me into someone stronger, more compassionate, and more determined than I ever thought possible. While I would give anything to have him back, I know that his legacy lives on in me. Every step I take, and every goal I achieve, is for him. And though he is no longer here to see it, I know he would be proud.
Ethel Hayes Destigmatization of Mental Health Scholarship
Mental health has always been more than just a topic to me, it is something I have seen up close through my stepdad who has bipolar disorder. Watching him struggle with his mental health has changed my goals, shaped my relationships, and taught me important lessons about the world. Even though his journey has been tough, it has shown me the power of love, strength, and understanding. When I was younger, my stepdad was like a superhero to me. He was the one who made everyone laugh, supported me at dance, and worked hard to give our family a good life. But sometimes, things changed. There were days when he would stay in his room, too sad to come out. He would become irratable easily. Other times, he would be full of energy, making big plans and trying to do everything all at once. I didn’t understand why he was so different from day to day until I learned he had bipolar disorder. That explained a lot, but it didn’t make things easier. Living with someone who has bipolar disorder can be really hard. During his low moments, it was like he was carrying a weight too heavy to lift. During his high-energy times, he often wore himself out, and the crash that followed was even harder to see. No matter what, he tried his best to show up for me and my brother. His effort, even on his worst days, taught me what it means to be strong. He never gave up, even when it felt like everything was working against him. Seeing his struggles inspired me to want to help people who are going through similar things. I want to work in a career where I can make a difference in mental health awareness and help families get the support they need. Mental health challenges affect so many people, but not everyone has access to the care and resources that could help them. Watching my stepdad fight his battles showed me how important it is to stand up for those who feel like they are fighting alone. Living with my stepdad has also changed how I treat the people in my life. At first, I didn’t always know how to react to his mood swings. Sometimes I felt hurt or confused, especially when he got frustrated or distant. But over time, I started to understand that his behavior wasn’t personal. It was the illness, not him. This taught me how to be more patient and compassionate. I learned how to really listen to someone and be there for them, even when they are struggling. These lessons helped me become a better friend and family member. I try to be someone people can count on when they are having a hard time. Whether it is listening to a friend talk about their anxiety or helping out at mental health events, I feel like I can use what I have learned to make a difference in someone’s life. I know how much it means to feel supported, and I want others to feel that too. Watching my stepdad also changed the way I see the world. I used to think that mental health was just something people dealt with on their own, but now I know it is so much more than that. It affects everything. I also learned how much stigma surrounds mental health. I saw how hard it was for my stepdad to talk about what he was going through because he didn’t want people to judge him. This made me realize how important it is to speak up and fight for change. We need to make mental health care easier to get and create a world where people don’t feel ashamed of their struggles. My stepdad’s journey with bipolar disorder has not been easy, but it has taught me so much about resilience, love, and the importance of understanding others. I’ve learned how to keep going even when life feels overwhelming and how to see the best in people, even when they are struggling. Most of all, I’ve learned that empathy and kindness can make a huge difference. As I plan for my future, I want to honor what my stepdad has taught me. I want to help create a world where mental health is treated with the care and respect it deserves. His story is not just about challenges, it is about strength, hope, and the difference that love and understanding can make. That is the story I want to carry with me as I work to help others.
