My dad was diagnosed with prostate cancer which very quickly turned into generalized cancer as the cancer spread to other organs his cancer journey went from November 2022 to April 2024. Despite chemotherapy, pain, and fear, he never gave up hope and fought until he couldn't for my little brother who is 16, and me 19.
My dad was the most selfless, funny, and kind person I've ever known. He had an unshakeable desire to help others, whatever the circumstances. He had that rare ability to make everyone feel seen and appreciated for who they were, whether they were family members, friends, or people in need.
Shortly after his death, a man shared on my dad's Facebook profile a photo and a text that left a lasting impression on me.
He explained that one day my dad came to his rescue when his 1978 VW suspension broke while he was traveling around Europe, he was from England, and this story happened in Dunkirk, France where I come from. When that happened, he was lost and went to the nearest cafe and it was the one next to our apartment and asked for help from people, and that's when my dad burst through the door and said "Volkswagen?" My dad was a huge fan of VW cars and was very knowledgeable about them, especially at fixing them, so my dad went to our garage brought some tools, and spent ages on the side of the road helping this man, he got the van going and the man went back home as well as my dad after that. I think this story shows who he is as a person. That's how he was, always ready to lend a hand, share a smile, and make someone's day better.
Losing him to cancer left a void that nothing can fill. He was my best friend, my greatest supporter, and a source of strength for my little brother and me. He had fought cancer with such courage. Cancer took away all the moments I could have had with him and nothing will ever fill that void.
This loss has impacted me in many ways, I learned that we have to live every moment we can with our loved ones because we don't know when the last one will be, and enjoy life. Life is precious and can change at any moment and turn our whole world upside down. His strength and sacrifice for me and my little brother are an inspiration. My father was the one who always cheered us up and believed in us.
The loss of my father was and remains a painful journey. I'm so proud to have had my father as a role model because today I carry a bit of him with me every day. He left me the greatest gift of all: his values and his vision of life.
