The first time that I felt true appreciation and gratitude for helping someone was when I was in fourth grade. For this particular assignment, we had to make a house using popsicle sticks. As I was making mine, the girl right next to me was struggling to the point she was tearing up trying to glue the pieces together to make it stand. Back then, I was a timid person so making conversation with someone first was always a struggle for me. I was debating with myself whether I should offer help or wait for the teacher to notice and help her instead. I concluded that I would speak first and tried to offer my help. I gave her tips and ideas on how to make sure it would stand and not collapse. As we worked on her little popsicle house, her frown started to disappear and she became less frustrated as things started to work out for her. At this point, I abandoned my project and put my full focus on hers. By the end of the class, she thanked me profusely and hugged me. Being at the receiving end of this gratitude not only opened something inside of me but it also helped me get out of my shell. This experience taught me that making someone else happy may also make me happy. I have had eczema for as long as I can remember. When I was young I would have it in the elbow, on the back of my knees and my neck. Those areas would be bursting with dry skin and a tinge of red from all of my scratching. My eczema flare-up began to worsen between my freshman and sophomore years of high school, causing my entire neck and shoulders to peel. Not only was it intolerable, but I did not enjoy seeing it. Even in the heat, I would cover it up when I started to feel self-conscious by wearing long sleeves or sweaters. After my mother saw my skin condition, she booked an appointment with a dermatologist. I had a serene feeling when I entered that clinic for some reason. The doctor who came in was kind and had a pleasant voice that made me feel at ease around her. I also enjoyed the sterile and clean surroundings. I went back a couple of times, and my skin improved immensely. I will always be grateful to her, and after that, I made the decision that I wanted to assist others with their skin. Education to me is about acquiring skills and knowledge to help oneself and their community. It should be important as education is supposed to help you in the world and how you will navigate it based on your interests and values. Education can have a beneficial impact on you in an assortment of ways, including helping you make wise life decisions, engaging in real-world activities, meeting new people, and even developing self-respect. My life goals are to live comfortably with my friends and family while helping as many people as I can and giving to my community. By becoming a Dermatologist, I can help treat skin conditions that could improve one's self-image, and comfortability. I would like to help people with similar struggles to mine to help boost their self-confidence so they won't have to be ashamed of going out in their natural skin. This field can also treat and prevent diseases that are harmful to one's life. Improving one's skin health can greatly improve someone's quality of life which I aim to do.
