My name is Veronica and I am currently pursuing a degree in sport management, with the goal of being a strong female presence in the sports world someday. I have always been proud of my logistical abilities, and apply them in internships, jobs, and social situations. My family is my everything, and though it is unique, I wouldn't change it for the world. My mom is a single mom, and the hardest working person I know. She passed on her love of sports to me, and everything I do is for her. Immediately after starting college in the fall of 2023, I joined 3 clubs/organizations, holding roles as the track and field team manager, a sport conference planning intern, and member of a sports professional development program. I love being involved in my community and have taken every opportunity for growth available. I want to be known as a lively, compassionate, and kind friend/peer, and am so grateful for my collegiate experience and support.

When I told my best friend that I was sure I would move back in with my mom at some point after college, she looked horrified. She told me that that was her worst nightmare and she was so glad to be out of her house for good. I could not feel differently. Though I don’t think I will live with her for the entirety of my adult life, I would do anything to get at least one or two more years with her, going through our routines of eating together in front of the tv, and watching whatever wacky program she found that week. One time we ended up watching a drone racing competition, and we still laugh about it to this day. Even though raising me on her own was incredibly difficult, she raised me with such grace and love that she is truly my best friend in every universe. Whether it was calling her to pick me up while she was at work with no one else to pick me up, losing a key when she was out of town, or bothering her when she tried to work at night, she never once made me feel like a burden, only showered me with love. My mom is a unique human, and attracts everyone around her. She is lively, passionate, and will give a smile to anyone looking her way. Being around her was fascinating to me, as I was a much more introverted child. But I now see similarities in us, with me wanting to spread love as she does. If there is something I can do to make someone’s life just a little bit better, I will jump at the opportunity.
My mom has a deep passion for sports, and growing up there was always a game on tv. Deciding to pursue a degree in sport management was like a dream come true for my mom, and she has watched proudly as I have immersed myself into the sports world at school. She is hard on me about working hard and getting good grades, she knows what a privilege it is that I can attend school and doesn't want me to waste the opportunity. While most kids want to make their parents proud, I have to. After all that she has given me, not doing her right is my biggest fear. She deserves the world, and if me working extra hard to pursue my dreams makes her happier and better off, I will do so until the end of time. I hope that I can use my studies to land a job that I love, but that will ultimately allow me to pay her back even a portion of what she has invested into me.I would love to end up working in management and logistics for a team, league, or organization. I value critical thinking and attention to detail, as well as getting to meet new people and help them with whatever they need. It has always been my dream to be able to support her in her older age, and I strive to use my education to do this.
We recently found out that my tuition has been raised, and though she tries to hide it, I know she is concerned about where the extra money will come from. Anyone from a single parent household knows that only having one income stream increases financial stress significantly, and I believe it is my duty to help alleviate some of that anxiety due to every sacrifice my mom makes for me.

I am proud to come from a single parent household. My mom raised me to cherish life, be kind to others and find ways to celebrate the small and large milestones. We’ve grown closer through my high school years despite natural mother-daughter obstacles and the demands of a rigorous academic curriculum. She supported how I chose to prioritize serving my community, and willingly participated with me in food bank shifts, waking at 5 am to be an SF marathon race volunteer and delivering food for our temple to senior citizens. I learned about managing money from my mom who encouraged me to apply for a job working at my school’s prep shop and sporting events. In the fall I was involved in a hit-and-run car accident and was thrust into learning about car insurance after the driver vacated the scene. We regularly talk about “adult stuff” honestly and I credit learning values from my mom who juggles a full-time job, household logistics and supporting me with homework and everyday needs. She taught me that it’s ok to ask for help and to be vulnerable and that has served me well within my own community of friends, teammates and teachers. I’m ready to pave a new path forward with the University of Michigan sports management community.
As I think about beginning college in the fall, I’m eager to embrace new challenges, both on my own in the classroom, and within the Ann Arbor sports community. I’ve wanted to live in a traditional 4 season climate forever and I know I will draw from my mom’s lessons to make sure I dress warm during cooler months, hydrate regularly and recycle recycle recycle. My natural tendency is to problem solve, plan, and lend assistance to others when it’s needed, and I have already researched ways in which I can make an immediate contribution to both club and Division 1 teams by offering to help manage key logistics. The incredible and diverse environment of a small college town will certainly help fuel the chance to explore my education outside of the classroom, something both my mom and I feel strongly enriches one’s life experiences. As a young woman, student, daughter, city resident … I see problems in this world that need attention and support. My time as a college student would not be complete without a true effort to educate myself as best as possible on how to aid change, resulting in personal and community action.
I know I’ve been lucky, having been raised by a mom who motivates me to do better. Had I not been raised with strong love and support, I think my outlook on life would be very different than it is. I model a lot of my behavior after her, and am extremely proud of it. This blessing is my foundation of which I’m excited to watch grow and strengthen through my college years and beyond. I thank you for considering me for the Larry Darnell Green Scholarship.
