The most meaningful relationship in my life is the one I share with my mother. Her strength, sacrifices, and unwavering support have shaped the person I am today and continue to influence how I approach relationships, challenges, and my future goals. Watching her navigate life with resilience and selflessness has taught me lessons about perseverance, empathy, and responsibility that I carry with me every day.
My mother immigrated to the United States from India in search of better opportunities, leaving behind everything familiar to build a new life for our family. She took on this challenge with courage, working tirelessly to support us while often putting her own needs last. She consistently gives more than she receives, never expecting recognition or praise. Growing up, I saw firsthand the long hours, the financial struggles, and the emotional weight she carried, yet she always remained positive, hopeful, and determined. Her example showed me that true strength is found not in comfort, but in sacrifice and persistence.
This relationship has deeply influenced my work ethic and mindset. Whenever I face challenges, whether in school, athletics, or life, I think about her journey and remind myself that I owe it to her to give my best effort. As the only Indian football player on my team, I often felt overlooked and underestimated. There were years when I was treated as a second option, but instead of becoming discouraged, I worked harder, trained longer, and pushed myself beyond my limits. My motivation came from knowing how much my mother had sacrificed so that I could have opportunities. By my senior year, I earned a starting position, proving to myself that resilience and effort lead to growth. That lesson traces directly back to her example.
Beyond personal drive, my relationship with my mother has shaped how I build connections with others. She taught me kindness, respect, and humility by the way she treats everyone she meets. No matter the situation, she approaches people with empathy and understanding. Because of her, I try to lead with compassion, whether through helping teammates, volunteering, or supporting friends. Small acts of kindness, such as helping someone when they are struggling or simply being there to listen, matter more than recognition. Her influence reminds me that relationships are built on trust, sincerity, and consistent effort.
This mindset also shapes my long-term goals. I plan to pursue accounting and eventually become an entrepreneur, with the goal of owning and operating hotels. While financial independence and professional success matter to me, my deeper motivation is to provide my family with stability and security, especially my mother. I want to give her everything she never had and create a life where she no longer has to worry. Her sacrifices inspire me to pursue success not just for myself, but for the people who believed in me before I ever believed in myself.
Ultimately, my relationship with my mother defines how I approach life. She taught me that adversity is not an obstacle, but an opportunity to grow stronger. She showed me that humility, discipline, and compassion create lasting impact. Through her example, I have learned how to build meaningful connections, stay grounded in my values, and strive for excellence with purpose. Everything I aim to achieve begins with the lessons she instilled in me, making her the most influential figure in my journey.
Valerie Rabb Academic Scholarship
I am a first-generation college student motivated by discipline, resilience, and the sacrifices my family made to give me opportunity. My parents immigrated to the United States from India with limited resources and no guarantees of success. Growing up in a household that consistently faced financial stress taught me early on that stability is earned through hard work and persistence. Those lessons shaped my decision to pursue accounting as the foundation for a career in business and entrepreneurship, where I hope to eventually own and operate hotels that create jobs and long-term impact in local communities.
One of the most defining adversities I have faced came through football. I was the only Indian football player on my team, and from my freshman year through my junior year, I was always viewed as a second option. No matter how hard I worked, I felt I had to prove myself more than others. There were assumptions made about my athletic ability and toughness based solely on how I looked or where my family came from. Being overlooked year after year was frustrating and discouraging, especially when football was something I genuinely loved.
There were moments when I questioned whether the effort was worth it. However, every time I felt doubt, I thought about my parents and everything they sacrificed to come to this country. They did not leave their home and family behind so I could quit when things got hard. Instead of giving up, I decided to change what I could control. I worked harder than ever before. I trained longer, studied the game more intensely, and held myself to a higher standard than anyone else expected of me.
By my senior year, I gave the coaching staff no choice but to start me. That moment was not just about earning a position on the field. It was about proving to myself that persistence and discipline can break through bias and doubt. Earning that starting role validated years of effort and reinforced a mindset that I carry into every part of my life.
That experience shaped how I approach my education and career goals. Accounting requires consistency, attention to detail, and the ability to perform under pressure. The lessons football taught me directly translate to the professional world. I plan to use my education to build ethical, well-run businesses that prioritize people as much as profit. Through entrepreneurship, I want to provide opportunities to others who may feel underestimated or overlooked, just as I once did.
Ultimately, I plan to make a positive impact by leading with integrity and giving back through mentorship and job creation. The adversity I faced taught me resilience, humility, and confidence in my abilities. It reminded me that success is not given. It is earned through effort, patience, and belief in yourself even when others do not see your potential yet.
