I'm Valerie Hernandez, residing in Compton, California, and currently attending Compton High School. I come from a low incoming house and will be the first to attend college. As I look towards the future, my ambition is to become a teacher. When I pursue a higher education, I plan to major in either Liberal Studies or English. Deciding what University I want to attend has been a challenge to me because of money. My family doesn't come from racks and riches and knowing that money is a big part of college is pulling me back. My mom recently lost her job and that's been really pulling on me. Her and my sister are the only ones that work in my family, not even my dad and I hate him for it. He's in good shape to get a job but refuses to just because he's lazy. But when my mom lost her job, he can take her to a million places to apply but not even apply himself. So right now my sister is the only money provider in the family. In the future I want to be an elementary school teacher. I want to change the lives of little kids and have them believe that everything is possible. I will be the best teacher I can become and tell my kids to never stop chasing their dreams. The responses and faces I get when I tell my friends and family that I want to be a teacher are always horrifying. They ask me why, they'll me I wont make money, they tell me I wont go anywhere. But I refuse to believe that, I refuse to listen to their words and bring me down. My passion to become a teacher came from my high school teacher, Mr. Ney. He's been my AP English teacher for two years, AP Lang and AP Lit. He has really impacted my life for the greatest. Ney never fails to tell us about the real world and their challenges. If you're going through problems he will be there for us. I want to be like him, I want to change the lives of kids and never let them give up. Teachers like him will always be remembered in my heart. Even if its with kids or teenagers, I want to be there for my kids and have a classroom they can feel safe in.

Ever since I was a little kid, I have always been interested in my English classes. My love for English started in third grade from Ms. Moreno. Every once and a while, she would test our reading and make us write a short summary observing the book. There was this one specific book, “Junie B. Jones” that changed my perspective in the English subject. It brought me so much joy to keep on reading and writing about something I love so much. Writing is my favorite thing ever because I can express, give my opinion, and show people how I view things. Even if I did not feel confident in my writing, I still enjoy it. When I'm writing, I feel like I am an author writing a book and I control everything. It brings me peace and joy. Outside of school I write how my day went into a journal. It's my safe place to vent about anything that annoys me; it is my way to feel relief. I even write short stories in my free time. They're all based on me and my life. I write fairy tales where I am not the person I am today. There is one short story I made a while ago called “Woods”. I imagined myself lost in the woods all alone where no one could find me. It was a good story for me because it really showed how I was feeling mentally in that moment. My English classes have helped me realize what I want to major in and grow up to be. In college I want to major in education and become an English teacher. I would love to inspire kids the way that my past English teachers have inspired and helped me. Even though it's my dream, I know it will be challenging. I will be faced with people in my household telling me things because this path isn't about the money.
