My name is Valerie. I recently graduated from Ventura College with a double major in Associates of Science and Associates in Administration of Justice. My goal in life is to be an exceptional nurse, to positively impact many lives, and help those that are not able to help themselves. In December 2018, I decided to become a Custody Deputy for the County Sheriff’s Office. I knew I was not afraid to put my life at risk if it meant saving one’s life. I worked in the Sheriff’s Office until June 2023 and remained an extra help employee till present. My exposure working at the Sheriff’s Office taught me to remain composed when an emergency arises or death at the scene. The agency showed me what it meant to lead others and devise strategies during distress situations. At the County Jail I was exposed to medical practices, worked alongside nurses and doctors. Seeing the interactions nurses conducted to provide patient care inspired me to become a nurse. I felt it was fulfilling, meaningful and my calling to become a nurse. I found motivation to be a part of a team that is fueled by a passion for making an impact on patient lives. I decided to leave my full-time position and become extra help to pursue an education in nursing. I knew in my heart all my beliefs and values for helping others are aligned to nursing. My compassion, empathy and willingness to help others were limitless.
