Hi! My name is Valentina Marin-Lopez. I am a senior Planetary Science and Astronomy major at Penn State University. I am minoring in Astrobiology. I am currently trying to overcome financial difficulties. The way I have paid for college for the last two years was through the Parents Plus Loan, but since I am turning 24 this year, I am no longer eligible for the loan. Additionally, the only way to pay is by doing a private loan but I do not think I will be able to repay two different loans, so I have been working on getting enough scholarships and grant to attend school in the fall and be able to graduate in the spring. I have a passion for science, and I love to research. My career goal is to be able to dedicate my life to research on planetary science and be able to identify the geological aspects that make it possible for a planet to be able to host life. I am looking forward to being able to graduate and pursue a Ph.D. I am from Colombia, but I have been leaving in the US for seven years. As an immigrant, my academic pathway has not been easy, but I believe I have come far, and I will not stop until I archive all my goals.

The Real Magic of Disney
My favorite thing about Disney is that encourages dreaming. I have always loved to watch Disney because you can go to places that real life does not allow you to go. I can be on a paradise island and the next second in a magic world. Additionally, the comfortable feeling that you get when you turn on the TV and put a Disney movie is a state of relace and enjoyment that you may not be able to get from anything else.
I love that some characters in Disney movies are strong with a lot of dreams that they follow until they are able to achieve what they want. As an immigrant that left my country and move to the U.S. and have experienced the dream of a better place and better opportunities, I can see myself in some Disney characters that have to fight for what they want and that dream big but also archive big. When I watch a Disney movie I feel that all I want to do is possible and I get so encouraged to keep following my passions because it gives you that feeling that everything is possible as long you work hard for it and believe.
My favorite type of character in Disney movies are the ones that know that they are not following the status quo but anyway, they have confidence in what they want and go for it not paying attention to what everybody thinks or want for them. For example, my favorite Disney princess is Merida because she knows what she wants and goes for it, in the path she made some mistakes but in the end, she fix them. I love Merida because she is a strong character with an amazing personality and a specific hobby that we both share is archery. Also, Tiana is one of my favorites because she loves but also does anything in her hands to fulfill her dreams. As a Hispanic woman in an astronomy major, I really related to Tiana because no one thought she could open the restaurant but she keep believing in herself until she got it.
Like in reading when you watch something there is no something better than somehow connecting with a character and feeling identifies with them and Disney allow you to find that connection that not only makes you feel good but can actually help to mold you as a person.
Harry Potter and the Sorting Hat Scholarship
I remember reading harry potter as the first book I read just because I wanted to read it. Harry Potter changed my perspective of the world in so many ways. After reading the saga, I developed a fascination for reading and I started to read so many other books. I read every day and I feel uncomfortable if I am not reading something.
As a child, I was very creative but mostly art talented. When I started to read, I developed a fascination for learning and science. I am a very curious person and I value knowledge.
When I first read harry potter, I am sure I thought that it will be awesome to be Gryffindor just because I loved Hermione and Harry, but since Luna show up in the book, I feel quite identified with her and even when I did not acknowledge at the time, I am a Ravenclaw. I may have not been that Ravenclaw before reading harry potter, but I can assure you that after it I am proud to say I am a full member of Ravenclaw House.
I am currently majoring in Planetary Science and astronomy, and I love to research and read. I belong to the Ravenclaws. I am derived from the want to understand and discover how the universe around me works. I am interested in understanding from a geological point of view how life is possible on a planet. There is nothing more interesting for me than an answer mystery and hunting for an answer.
I believe intelligence is different for everybody and being smart is not a walking book. I believe that the real question is to be intuitive, creative, and loving to learn.
Like any Ravenclaw, I am also a little peculiar. I have a little of Luna on myself and that is the magic of books not only allow you to travel to a different and fantastic place but to be able to connect with characters that may be part of you forever. I am a Ravenclaw because I leave to learn, and I am passionate about knowledge, but also, I believe that there is a little of each House in all of us. I am most brave when it is needed for me to fulfill what I want to do in research. I am ambitious when it comes to what to archive as a scientist. Finally, I am patient, so I can get further on my pathway and loyal as my loyal over anything else. We all identified with a specific house but in the end, the most important is to be open to all things that others can teach to us to be better persons.
