My name is Ursula Jenkins, I have two boys of my own and Unexpectedly gained 4 more kids through adoption. I had my life figured out so I thought. I had my two boys situated to where I was able to start back going to school. My dream has always been to become a nurse which would better help my family move into a nicer home and help financially. So I did some research and figured out which school I wanted to go to. Called and got everything lined up to start classes in the spring. Before I could put my plans for college in motion, out of the blue one day I receive a phone call from an unfamiliar number. It was a social worker calling and she called and stated she had been reaching out to different family members of mines but no one qualified and I was the last person to contact. My nieces and nephews was in foster care and it was time for their adoption. At the time I was married so I had to think long and hard and talk it over with my then husband. We talked about it and came to the conclusion we would take the kids. They were strangers to me and I was like a stranger to them. I just wasn’t around my sister most of the time due to us living different life styles. In order for me to even get the kids in my home my husband and I had to rearrange bedrooms, take foster parenting classes, and whole bunch of more things like getting background checks and TB skin tests and filling out a stack of paperwork that literally took me two weeks to finish. By the time I finished getting everything in order it was time for school to start and the kids had just moved in. My plans were put on hold due to now having a three year old to take care of plus three siblings and my two boys. That’s 6 kids (talking about the Brady Bunch)! They all had different personalities I now had to figure out and I decided to quit working to make sure they all was getting to doctors appointments on time, seeing the dentist, taking the correct meds. And getting their home work did. It was overwhelming for me to say the least. Once I figured out a routine schedule for all of the kids and myself things began to smooth out, but then the behavior issues started with me having to run back and forth to the school and having school Meetings with the teachers and principles. I often sat and thought to myself if I had started school how would I juggle my school work and deal with 6 kids and their different personalities and personal problems. It was no way! Unless I hired a nanny which I couldn’t afford. So becoming a nurse could help my big family out in more ways than one.
