Science Fiction Becomes Science Fact Scholarship
Hi, my name is Tyson Trieu. I'm currently a freshman in high school.
For the past six years, my grandma has been struggling with high blood pressure, diabetes, difficulty
breathing, and being severely underweight. She has been living with my family ever since I was born. She's nurtured both me and my sister since we were babies because my parents were extremely busy working to make a living. Even though she cared so deeply for me, I took her love for granted. Six summers ago, we got into a car crash which weakened her body dramatically. She was hospitalized for about a week where she managed to recover. Still, she has never shown the same livelihood she had before the car crash. When I came to visit her in the hospital, my passion for STEM, biology, and medicine formed. Watching the doctors and nurses attentively helping my grandma made me feel both grateful and happy. I cared for my grandma deeply so it was relieving to see her recover as the days went by. Throughout my grandma's journey in the hospital, I realized that I loved and appreciated her way more than I thought I did. People like my grandma spread so much unconditional love to the world but they're also vulnerable.
After the car crash situation six years ago, I developed a dream. A dream that I would continue to tirelessly work towards up to the present. I want to become one of the people who work so hard to keep people like my grandma alive. I wanted to become a doctor so that I could keep the people I cared for healthy. Although I still believe in this dream, I've also witnessed the harsh realities of the healthcare industry. I was glad my grandma was able to recover but the bills my parents had to pay afterwards were absurdly high. Our parents became stressed from the hospital bills and they would constantly fight. This was pretty traumatic but it solidified my resolve to become a doctor.
What I want to turn from science fiction into science fact is being able to provide affordable treatment for future low-income families. Many people go through the same experiences I went through but aren't as fortunate. The average ER visit costs between $1200 - $1300 and the average cost for a day of hospitalization is roughly $2883. This means if someone's relative or friend got into a severe accident, an ER visit along with a one-week stay in the hospital would cost about $21481 - $21381. This is expensive and even though health insurance can compensate for a big portion of the bill, not everybody can afford or has access to health insurance. I want to be able to help people like my grandma without sinking their bank accounts. Although I'm only in high school right now, I hope to start an affordable medical center. I believe this will help give back to the community. To achieve this I will need to study a medical major. I'm determined to achieve my dreams and I plan to work hard to open my clinic catered towards low-income families. Even though my family Isn't very well off, I plan to make it work.
