Growing up with a single mother didn’t hold me back; it sparked all of my ambitions. My mother spent most of her childhood in a small town in Tennessee, surrounded by limited opportunities. Determined to break that cycle, she worked tirelessly to create a better life for us. From the moment I was born, she dedicated herself to giving me what she never had - opportunity, and the ability to believe that I could achieve anything. My whole life, I watched her make countless sacrifices, work long hours, and face the challenges of being a single mother. Her unwavering dedication became a powerful example for me, shaping the way I would approach challenges in my own life and especially in my educational career. When I turned nine, she moved us to Dallas, Texas, where the rest of our lives began in a city that offered the opportunities she knew I needed to thrive. Not only was the move a change in location, but it was a defining moment showing her courage, drive, and unwavering hope for my future. The values instilled in me by my role model of a mother, hard work, resilience, and a drive to succeed have shaped every part of who I am. Her sacrifices are my motivation to excel and pursue my goals with intention. I continue to work toward success, not only for myself, but to honor her efforts to get me where I am today. My mother’s story is my foundation, and her resilience continues to inspire me. Every day, she pushes me to dream big and always take advantage of every opportunity that comes my way. As a result of being raised on such values of strength, discipline, and determination, I’ve learned to embrace life’s challenges with perseverance and lead with empathy and conviction in everything that I do. As the secretary and first chair violist for my high school orchestra, the National Honor Society Membership Coordinator, the Social Media Manager for the Environmental club, and as a winner of an internship with my city’s mayor, I’ve been raised to turn my ambitions into action. While I’ve worked hard to secure these roles, I value them most for the chance they give me to give back. Growing up with a hardworking single mom has made me value community. I know what it’s like to have a lot of responsibility, and I bring that same care and accountability to everything I’m involved in. My goal is to lead by example by lifting others up, just like my mother did for me. Just as she broke cycles for our family, my ambitions are shaped by the desire to do the same thing, not only for myself but for others. As a gay, Black, and Christian man living in the Deep South, I’ve experienced the complexities of identity in environments that haven’t always welcomed me. With this experience, I am committed to inclusion, advocacy, and building spaces where people like me feel valued, and I like to think I’ve already started. During my internship, I worked on a business marketing project with the Plano Symphony Orchestra in which I conducted research and created a Juneteenth post that highlighted the contributions that black composers have made toward classical music. This was an immensely meaningful project to me because it allowed me to not only spread awareness but also to be a representative for black musicians and welcome black audiences to the classical music industry on a large scale. In addition, I facilitated the symphony’s first recognition of Pride Month. My mom’s constant support of my identity, growth, and voice gave me the courage to lead with integrity and fully show up in every space I enter. In the end, growing up with a single mother not only shaped me but also defined me. It gave me a purpose and a vision for a future where I can succeed and push others to succeed as well. I am the result of a story rooted in love and sacrifice. Every goal, value, and ambition I have and every person I uplift will always be a reflection of my mother, who raised me to believe that I could do anything.
