I would describe myself as someone who has always wanted to make a difference in the lives of the people around me and who wants nothing but the best for everyone. From growing up in Boston, Massachusetts, to now attending Morehouse College, I have been given so many different experiences that ultimately shaped the way I see my future for the better. I am currently a second-year psychology major on the pre-dental track, and though I want to become a dentist, I have realized that my career is going to be about much more than simply dentistry. I want to use all that I accomplish to give back to my community and help people who may not always have the same opportunities or access to proper resources. One of the biggest experiences that shaped who I am today happened during the COVID-19 pandemic. I watched my best friend’s family struggle both mentally and financially, and seeing people I cared about go through hardships that were outside of their control really changed my perspective on life, especially at such a young age. It made me realize that you never truly know what someone else may be going through and that even a small act of kindness can mean a lot to someone with little to nothing. That very same month, I decided to start the Each One Teach One Foundation. Something that had started as a simple idea to help aid my friend's family became something I became truly and deeply passionate about. Through the foundation, I have been able to give back to various local communities. Through winter coat giveaways, canned food drives, clothing drives, and other community outreach events, I was able to bring everyone together safely and positively. These experiences have instilled a deep feeling in my heart that I am obligated to help others, and I love everything about it. They also have taught me that leadership is not always about being the person in the room with the biggest title. Sometimes it is simply seeing a problem in your community and deciding that you are going to do something about it. My passion for service is also a major reason I chose dentistry. I wanted to find a career where I could build relationships with people whilst also making a real difference in their lives. Studying psychology at Morehouse has helped me understand how important empathy, communication, and trust are when working with other people. I want to bring those qualities into dentistry and make sure my future patients are always able to feel comfortable, respected, and heard when in my chair. The education I am pursuing will help me turn that goal into a reality. My psychology degree is giving me a better understanding of people, while my pre-dental coursework is preparing me for dental school and the science behind healthcare. Eventually, I want to become a dentist who provides quality care while also working to make dental care more accessible to underserved communities. I also want to use my education to be an example for younger Black and Brown students. When I learned how few Black dentists there are in the United States, it emphasized my already known fact that representation is vital. I want a young child to see me and know that becoming a dentist is possible for them too. Everything I have experienced has shaped my purpose and turned me into the man I am today. I aspire to become successful, but I also want my success to mean something beyond myself.

I plan to continue my education after graduating from Morehouse College, as I know my undergraduate degree is only the first step of what I want to accomplish. My goal is to attend dental school and earn my Doctor of Dental Surgery or Doctor of Dental Medicine degree. However, for me, continuing my education is not simply just about earning another degree. It is about gaining the knowledge, clinical skills, and experience needed to become the dentist and community leader I vow to be. A major part of why I chose this career path comes from my experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic. I watched my best friend’s family struggle both mentally and financially, and seeing people I cared about experience circumstances outside of their control changed the way I viewed my own individual purpose. I realized that even small acts of kindness can have a meaningful impact on someone’s life. That realization inspired me to start the Each One Teach One Foundation, where I have organized winter coat giveaways, canned food drives, clothing drives, and other community outreach efforts. Through this work, I discovered that serving others was something I wanted to carry with me for the rest of my life. That passion for service eventually led me to dentistry. I wanted a career that would allow me to build relationships with people while making a tangible difference in each and every one of their lives. Dental school will let me build on what I am currently learning at Morehouse while developing the technical skills needed to provide quality care. As a psychology major on the pre-dental track, I have also learned how important empathy, communication, and trust are in all aspects of healthcare. I want to bring those lessons into the dental chair and make sure my future patients feel respected, valued, and most importantly, heard. Continuing my education is also important to me because of the lack of representation in dentistry. Learning that Black dentists make up only roughly 3.8-3.9 percent of dentists in the United States motivated me to see my career as something bigger than myself. I want to become the dentist that a young Black or Brown child can see and think, “I can do that too.” Representation can help build trust between patients and providers while also showing young people that careers in healthcare are possible for them. After dental school, I hope to continue serving underserved communities and expand the impact of the Each One Teach One Foundation. I want to use my education to help make quality dental care more accessible to people who have historically faced barriers to affordable healthcare. I also hope to mentor young students and encourage more Black and Brown students to pursue careers in healthcare. My experiences with academic challenges, injuries, and witnessing the struggles of people I care about have all taught me resilience and strengthened my entire sense of purpose. Continuing my education will allow me to turn those experiences into something far more meaningful and impactful. I am not pursuing dentistry solely to have a career; I am pursuing it because I want my education to give me the ability to serve, inspire, and create opportunities for others.

If I were given the opportunity to improve my local community, I would create more free opportunities for the local youth to learn, grow, and discover what they are truly passionate about. Growing up, I understood early on that not every child has easy access to personal trainers, expensive camps, organized programs, or other resources that can help them succeed. I believe that where someone comes from or what their family can afford should never determine the opportunities they have. I want to continue creating spaces where cost is never a barrier for a young person who wants to better themselves. This is something I have already begun working toward through my free Summer Nights Youth Basketball Workouts and Summer Nights Youth Soccer Clinic. This past summer, I hosted my second annual basketball workouts and introduced the soccer clinic for the first time. Through these programs, I was able to give local youth a place to improve their skills, build confidence, and most importantly, enjoy the game in a positive and encouraging environment. Seeing the impact these clinics had made me realize that I want to continue expanding the ways I serve my community. If given more resources and opportunities, I would expand these clinics far beyond just basketball and soccer. I would work to create year-round programs that expose young people to different sports, educational opportunities, mentorship, college preparation, and other experiences they may not normally have access to. Sports have always been an important part of my life, but I also understand that every child's passion is different. Some may see their future on a basketball court or soccer field, while others may see themselves becoming a doctor, entrepreneur, or artist. I want young people in my community to have the resources and support necessary to explore those possibilities and let them know that any career is a possibility for them. Improving my community matters to me, as I believe real change starts with people willing to invest in others. Through my nonprofit, Each 1 Teach 1, I have continued to find ways to give back to underserved communities. Whether it’s through organizing community events, collecting donations, providing resources to people in need, or working directly with young athletes in my neighboring towns, I try to use what I have to improve the lives of others. These experiences have shown me that helping someone does not always require having an abundance of money or resources. Sometimes, simply creating an opportunity and giving your time can mean everything to someone else. In my opinion, the most rewarding part of serving my community has been seeing the relationships that form through these opportunities. Watching young athletes smile after learning a new skill or hearing them say they cannot wait for the next session reminds me why this work is so vitally important. Knowing that I am leaving a lasting message with these kids means the world to me, and it has shown me that something I may see as a small act of kindness can truly have a lasting impact on someone’s everyday life and future. As I continue my education and pursue a career where I can positively impact people's lives, I want my community service to remain as a major part of who I am. By improving my community, I’m also creating opportunities that allow others to flourish like never before. I want young people to know that their circumstances do not have to limit their future and that there are people within their own community who truly believe in their potential and want to help them succeed.

Every summer, many people focus on what they can gain, whether it's a paycheck, a vacation, or new experiences. For me, my most meaningful summer experience was giving my time and energy back to the community that has helped me grow into the man that I’ve become. This summer, I hosted my second annual free Summer Nights Youth Basketball Workouts and my first-year Summer Nights Youth Soccer Clinic, driven by my commitment to serving others and creating real opportunities for young people in my community. Growing up, I understood early on that not every young athlete has easy access to personal trainers, expensive camps, or organized skill development sessions. From there, I knew that I wanted to create an opportunity where cost would never be a barrier for a passionate athlete. By organizing these free clinics, I gave my town's local youth a place to improve their skills, build confidence, and most importantly, enjoy the game in a positive and encouraging environment. I could have spent the entirety of my summer solely focused on myself; however, instead, I chose to dedicate my time to helping local young athletes who may not otherwise have access to these opportunities. To me, that is how I embody selflessness: the act of recognizing a need and being willing to give what you have to help someone else succeed. Planning these events taught me far more than I anticipated. I reached out to find volunteers, organized drills, managed schedules, and ensured every young athlete felt included. Leading a group of children with different skill levels required lots of patience, communication, and frequent adaptability. My goal wasn't just to teach basketball or soccer; it was to make every child leave feeling encouraged and excited to come back. I wasn’t doing this for any sort of recognition or financial gain. This stemmed directly from the fact that I knew my experience, time, and knowledge could positively impact someone else. The most rewarding part of the experience for me was seeing the relationships form and blossom. Countless parents, athletes, and relatives came together to support the clinics, creating connections that extended far beyond sports. Watching these young athletes smile with joy after learning a new skill or hearing them say they couldn't wait for the next session was like fuel to the fire for my passion. It is also a constant reminder to me that sometimes the smallest opportunities can have the greatest impact on others. It was in moments like these that it showed me that helping someone does not always require having an abundance of resources or money. Sometimes, simply creating an opportunity and giving your time can mean everything to someone else. Overall, this experience strengthened my leadership abilities and showed me the importance of serving others. It reinforced that leadership is not only about being in charge but also about creating opportunities for others to flourish. As I continue my education and pursue a career where I can positively impact people's lives, I will carry this lesson with me for as long as I am alive. Selflessness has taught me that success is not only measured by what I accomplish for myself but also by how many people I can help along the way. The success of these clinics showed me that meaningful change doesn't always require large resources; it simply requires someone willing to step up, invest in others, and build a stronger community.

A few years ago, I would've just told you I wanted to become a dentist. However, after my personal experiences and all that I've learned in my freshman year at Morehouse College, I know my career is far more than just that. I plan to use dentistry as a way to serve my community, build relationships, and most importantly, give back to those who don't always have access to affordable health care. One of the biggest influences on my career began during the COVID-19 pandemic. I witnessed firsthand my best friend's family severely struggle both mentally and financially, as the pandemic took an enormous toll on every aspect of their lives. Seeing people that I cared for go through such hardships that were out of their control completely altered my perspective on the harsh realities of life. I realized that even the smallest acts of kindness can have the most meaningful impact on another person's life; that very month, I founded the Each One Teach One Foundation. Something that started as a simple idea blossomed into a passion. From winter coat giveaways, canned food drives, and community outreach events, I discovered a newfound love. Those few events ignited my passion for serving my community, showing me that my purpose was bigger than just myself. As my passion for service grew, I began searching for a profession that would allow me to build lasting relationships while also making a tangible difference in others' lives. After researching different healthcare professions and reflecting on my own personal experiences, dentistry became the path I knew I wanted to pursue. During my research, I found that Black dentists make up only 3.8-3.9% of all dentists in the United States, and that statistic stayed with me; it motivated me to become more than just a dentist. I wanted to become a role model; I wanted to be the Black dentist a young child sees and realizes that they too can achieve the same dream. However, representation in healthcare is much more than just seeing someone who looks like you. It can help build trust and create a greater sense of understanding and care between patients and providers, as well as inspire more young people of color to pursue careers in healthcare. Representation is essential, and without it, young boys and girls may not even think certain professions are possible. Studying psychology has taught me that effective healthcare begins with empathy and trust. Those lessons will be just as important in the dental chair as the technical skills I develop. My coursework has also challenged me to become a critical thinker and an even better communicator. There have been countless moments when my workload felt overwhelming, but those many experiences taught me resilience and reminded me every day why I chose this career path. My entire goal is to become a dentist who not only provides exceptional care but also guarantees that every patient feels well respected, valued, and heard. I aspire to use my career to help make quality dental care more accessible to underserved communities; more specifically, those who have historically faced many barriers to healthcare. I want to continue serving my community, expand the impact of my foundation, and inspire the next generation of young Black and Brown healthcare professionals. Every experience I've had has, in some way, shape, or form, molded my purpose, from injuries to academic struggles to witnessing the hardship of those I care for and love. They haven’t just influenced my career goals; they've given me a lifelong commitment to serve.

Growing up in Boston, Massachusetts, I had a background that I feel played a major role in shaping who I am today. Being raised by a hardworking single mother raising two young boys taught me early on the meaning of resilience, responsibility, and perseverance. Although during my formative years I did not always have every opportunity available to me, watching my mother sacrifice and diligently work day and night motivated me even more to continue working hard and create a better future for myself and my family. My name is Tyron Boswell Jr., and I am a student at Morehouse College pursuing my bachelor's degree in psychology on the pre-dental track. From a very young age, I had been placed in situations that required me to mature early, adapt, and take initiative. By helping my mom care for my younger brother, I learned the importance of responsibility and sacrifice. Whether it was bringing him with me to practices, teaching him how to navigate his obstacles, or even volunteering at his school's parent events, I learned how to navigate unfamiliar challenges and grow through them all while bettering myself. These experiences shaped my independence and taught me that challenges do not define my future; my response to those challenges does. Pursuing education after high school has always been important to me, as I believe education creates the opportunities for growth and transformation. College is more than just earning a degree; it is a time when you can truly discover yourself and develop into the person you want to become. Within my first year of collegiate education, I have learned so much about myself and the man I am becoming today. My way of thinking has evolved in ways I could not have fathomed before, allowing me to approach situations with a clearer mindset, more maturity, and a stronger understanding of my overall purpose of giving back to my community. Sports have also had a major role in my journey. As a track and field athlete, I have encountered countless lessons that have taught me the importance of patience and perseverance. During my senior year of high school, I fractured my left ankle, halting me from competing for the rest of the season and putting my opportunity to run at the collegiate level in high jeopardy. After dedicating so much time and effort to the sport I love, dealing with the possibility of losing that opportunity was more than agonizing. Throughout my recovery, I quickly turned my frustration into motivation, committing myself to daily band exercises, physical therapy, strength training, and slowly reintroducing myself to the sport I loved. Through this process, I rebuilt my confidence and learned the importance of remaining dedicated even when faced with uncertainty. That very same mindset is what I carry every day, especially when struggling or feeling down on my work. This race I'm on is a marathon, not a sprint. Ultimately, I am grateful that my hard work and commitment allowed me to recover and continue my athletic career at the collegiate level. My lessons learned through my upbringing, education, and sports have shown me that success is not determined by the obstacles I face but by how I choose to respond to them. Every challenge has strengthened my determination to continue growing as a student, athlete, and future healthcare professional. As I pursue my goal of becoming a dentist, I hope to use the lessons I have learned to serve others, give back to communities like the one that raised me, and create opportunities for those who come after me.

From a young age, I have been infatuated with the science of dentistry. Since I was nine years old, I’ve dreamed of becoming a dentist, a dream that has evolved into a passionate and unwavering goal. What began as a simple fascination with clean teeth and checkups has grown into a deeper understanding of how science, combined with creative thinking, can improve lives. One example of this became clear during a community outreach initiative I organized through my nonprofit, Each 1 Teach 1. We noticed that many people facing housing insecurity avoided going to the dentist, not because they didn’t care about their health, but because they lacked access to basic hygiene products and felt embarrassed by the condition of their teeth. With this challenge in mind, I collaborated with local dentists and volunteers to create care packages, which were essentially custom kits filled with toothbrushes, toothpaste, floss, and simple oral hygiene instructions. We visited various homeless shelters and heavily populated areas to distribute these care packages. What made the project innovative wasn't just the distribution of supplies. This experience taught me that science doesn't have to be confined to labs or clinics. When paired with empathy and a creative mindset, it becomes a tool for human connection and real-world impact. By understanding how oral bacteria affect overall health and applying that knowledge in a community-centered way, I was able to help meet both a physical and emotional need. That’s when I knew science wasn’t just something I wanted to study; it was something I could use to make people feel seen and cared for. Now, as I prepare to pursue a degree in biology, I do so with the intention of becoming a dentist who not only treats patients but also changes the narrative. Society will benefit from my path because I intend to increase access for those who may struggle to gain any, build trust in underserved communities, and inspire a new generation of Black and Brown youth to see themselves in white coats. With Black dentists making up only 3.8% of the U.S. dental workforce, representation is more than a number; it’s a necessity. I plan to organize workshops and community events where successful African American dentists can share their stories, offering both inspiration and tangible roadmaps to success. These events will not only raise awareness about careers in dentistry but also teach practical skills, promote early exposure to science, and offer support to students who might otherwise be left behind. Through my education in science, I will bridge two worlds: clinical innovation and community empowerment. My goal is to continue turning obstacles into opportunities. Not just for myself, but for every young person who dares to dream of a different future.

Community involvement has always been at the core of my life. Growing up in Boston, Massachusetts, I witnessed firsthand the challenges many people in my community faced. I vividly remember driving home with my mother and seeing people living in unimaginable conditions. As a child, I couldn't understand why they didn’t have homes or basic necessities. When I asked my mother why this was happening, her explanation of poverty and homelessness left an unforgettable impact on me. From that moment on, I knew I wouldn’t be able to stomach standing idly by. I had to be part of the solution. With the support of my family, I began organizing small community initiatives in April of 2020: canned food drives, park cleanups, and finding any way I could to help. These early experiences taught me that service wasn’t just a good deed; it was a responsibility and a purpose. In June of 2020, I turned that purpose into action by, with the help of my mom, founding my nonprofit, the Each 1 Teach 1 Foundation. Built on the belief that we all have the power to lift each other up, the foundation focuses on providing resources and creating opportunities for people facing adversity. What started as a small initiative has evolved into a movement grounded in empowerment and community support. Through Each 1 Teach 1, we’ve organized events to deliver food, clothing, and essential supplies to those in need. One of the most memorable experiences was gathering volunteers to distribute care packages at a local homeless shelter. The faces and stories of the people we helped that day stay with me. Their gratitude showed me that even small efforts can create meaningful change. However, beyond providing immediate aid, my true goal is to equip individuals with the tools they need to build sustainable, independent lives. I believe that real impact happens when we empower others to thrive on their own terms. Leading a nonprofit has shaped me profoundly. It has taught me about leadership, perseverance, resilience, and the power of empathy. It has shown me that while one person can spark change, building lasting impact requires knowledge, strategy, and collaboration. That is why I know my education in college will be critical in continuing and expanding my commitment to service. The skills I’ve gained through founding and leading Each 1 Teach 1 have provided a strong foundation for my future career aspirations of becoming a dentist. From a young age, I have been infatuated with the science of dentistry and have since dreamed of becoming a dentist. A dream that has now evolved into a passionate and unwavering goal. Today, as I enter college to pursue a biology degree, I am more determined than ever to accomplish this aspiration, knowing it is not only a personal achievement but also a means to positively impact those around me. I aim to serve as a role model and inspire young Black and Brown children so that they can realize that a career in dentistry is well within their reach. Too often, there is a lack of representation in this field, with Black dentists making up only 3.8% of the U.S. dental workforce. Growing up, the career options presented to me were often limited to roles that aligned with stereotypical expectations: becoming a basketball star, a maintenance worker, or holding a regular 9-to-5. But I always yearned for something more. I pushed myself to think bigger. However, my passion is not just about personal success. It is about responsibility and about paving the way for others who may have never imagined themselves in a white coat. I aspire to organize workshops and community events where successful African American dentists can share their journeys of resilience and triumph. These panels would not only inspire but also equip young students with tangible insights into building careers in dentistry. In addition to inspiring thousands, these events would teach practical skills, promote early exposure to healthcare careers, and offer the kind of support and encouragement many students need but often lack. I want to show them they belong in these spaces; that their dreams are not just possible but necessary. My education will serve as a bridge between my commitment to community service and my professional aspirations. Through Each 1 Teach 1, through dentistry, and through every project I pursue, my mission remains the same: to uplift, to empower, and to lead lasting change for generations to come.

While others may have been satisfied with the path laid before them, I pushed myself to think bigger. From researching oral diseases to learning how today's modern medicines collaborate with dentistry to improve patient results, I have directly dedicated myself to learning as much as possible. During even my own dental appointments, I have taken every opportunity available to engage with my dentist. Asking thoughtful questions and seeking advice about how to pursue a career in their field, as they walk in the scrubs, I too want to be standing in someday. This proactive approach to learning and growth has been more than beneficial in shaping my knowledge as well. However, my passion for dentistry is not just about my personal success. It is also about my responsibility to pave a path for those who are to follow. Especially those who may never have considered dentistry as a viable career, not due to the lack of interest, however, but instead the lack of inclusion. Moreover, these workshops would offer the unwavering support and motivation that many young people lack when pursuing careers in fields where they are underrepresented. Community involvement has always been a core part of my life, and when reflecting on my journey, I find myself inspired by the life and legacy of Gregory Chase Carter. His commitment to community events will forever leave a lasting mark on those around him. Like Greg, I believe community service is a way to shape both the lives of others and our own. This scholarship represents an opportunity to continue that legacy, and I hope to honor Greg’s memory by giving back to my community. Growing up in Boston, Massachusetts, I witnessed firsthand the challenges that many people in my community faced. I remember driving home with my mother and noticing people living in the most inhumane conditions possible. As a child, I couldn’t understand why these people didn’t have homes or why they needed help. I asked my mom why it was happening, and she explained the complexities of poverty and homelessness. Even at such a young age that conversation left an earnest impact on me, and it was in that moment that I realized I couldn’t idly stand by; I had to act on it. This realization sparked my passion for helping others, and. With the support of my mom and a few relatives, I organized small events to provide aid to those in need within my community. Whether it was collecting coats for winter or distributing care packages to people in shelters, these experiences helped me understand that community service was no longer just a desire, but my purpose. In 2020, I took a significant step by founding my nonprofit, the “Each 1 Teach 1 Foundation.” Created on the belief that we all have the power to lift one another up. It focuses on providing resources and support to those facing adversity. What began as a small initiative has grown into a community driven movement aimed at creating lasting change. Through the foundation, we’ve provided essential resources such as food and clothing to those in need. Our last event was held in late October. I gathered two van loads of volunteers to help distribute care packages at my hometown's homeless shelter. I will never be able to forget the faces and even some names of those that we were able to help that day. The immense expression of gratitude that I received warmed my heart, as I knew this small act was making a huge feat in their lives. The most meaningful impact, however, has been the empowerment of those we help. We aim to give people the tools they need to succeed. This approach creates a culture of self-reliance, which is the change I hope to see more of in my community. Running the foundation has been a transformative experience for me. I’ve learned invaluable lessons about leadership, perseverance, and the importance of building a culture of empathy. I’ve seen firsthand how small acts of kindness can spark positive change, and how one individual’s dedication can inspire others to make a difference. These experiences have fueled my passion for continuing my work with the foundation, and I’m determined to expand our reach to serve even more people in need. If selected for this scholarship, I will use the funds to further my education, and with the connections I build, put myself in rooms where I can help my non-profit thrive. I believe that education combined with community service can create opportunities for everyone, regardless of their background. Just as Gregory Chase Carter dedicated his life to improving his community, I hope to honor his legacy by continuing his mission of service, empowerment, and lasting change.

Growing up in Boston, I had been raised solely by my mother, who worked tirelessly to support my brother and me, sacrificing so much so that we could pursue greater opportunities. I learned from an early age the importance of hard work, resilience, and giving back. Her devotion and selflessness instilled in me a deep commitment not only to pursue the highest level of education but also to create a future where I can give back to her and the broader community that raised me. These values are at the heart of my ambition to enter the field of dentistry. Since I was nine years old, I have been captivated by the art of dentistry. What began as a childhood curiosity has become a passionate and unwavering goal: becoming a dentist. For me, this dream goes beyond personal success; it is about breaking barriers and inspiring young Black and Brown children to see dentistry as a career within their reach. With Black dentists making up only 3.8% of the U.S. dental workforce, it is clear that more must be done to change this narrative. I am determined to be part of that change. Growing up, the career options presented to me were often limited to roles that aligned with societal stereotypes, becoming a basketball star, or a maintenance worker. However, I always knew I wanted more for my future. I pushed myself to think beyond those expectations. I immersed myself in learning about oral diseases, explored how modern medicines enhance dental care, and took every opportunity during my dental appointments to ask questions and seek advice. I envisioned myself standing in the same scrubs as my dentist, treating patients, and making a difference. To achieve my goals, I plan to pursue an education in the biological sciences and develop the skills necessary to excel in dentistry. I will work hard to graduate from college and apply to dental school, where I will gain the knowledge and experience to make a powerful impact in the field. Beyond my academic journey, I also aim to become an advocate for underrepresented communities in healthcare. I believe it is my responsibility to pave a path for those who follow, particularly in the dental field, where representation matters deeply. As part of this mission, I plan to organize workshops and community events where successful Black dentists can share their stories of resilience and triumph. These events will not only highlight the achievements of Black dentists but also offer young students tangible insights into the skills and experiences needed to excel in the field. Additionally, these workshops will provide practical dental care skills and expose students to the diverse career paths within dentistry. By equipping students with knowledge and inspiration, I hope to give them a head start on their journeys toward becoming dentists or other healthcare professionals. Ultimately, my ambition is to contribute to a more inclusive and diverse dental workforce while inspiring the young people in my community to dream big and pursue careers in fields that have often felt out of reach for them. My commitment to education, advocacy, and representation will drive me as I work toward a future where young people of all backgrounds can see themselves reflected in the dental field, just as I strive to do today.

Earning the Kalia D. Davis Memorial Scholarship would provide me with the vital financial support I need as I pursue my dream of becoming a dentist. From as young as nine, I’ve always been passionate about the science of dentistry, a dream that has now grown into a life goal. As I enter college to study biology, I’m determined to not only achieve personal success but also to serve as a role model for young Black and Brown children, showing them that a career in dentistry is more than possible. Growing up, I was often faced with limited career options that didn’t reflect my ambitions, yet I always knew I wanted something more. Rather than succumbing to these confines, I pushed myself further and found my passion. From researching oral diseases on my own to asking my dentist questions during appointments. These efforts have shaped my knowledge and reinforced my unwavering commitment to this path. But my journey is not only about personal success, it is also about addressing the lack of representation in the field as a whole. With Black dentists making up only 3.8% of the workforce, I feel a deep responsibility to change that. Inspired by Kalia’s resilience and her commitment to creating a legacy of excellence, I aspire to organize community events and workshops that expose young students to Black dentists as role models. These events would not only inspire but also provide practical skills and guidance, showing students that dentistry is a viable and empowering career. In my own life, loss has taught me the fragility of time. Losing someone close to me has instilled a sense of urgency and purpose to make the most of every moment, just as Kalia's memory may have taught many of us. The grief that lingers after a loss often fuels a determination to not only carry on but to do so with meaning. In this way, Kalia’s legacy resonates deeply with me. Her story serves as a reminder of how fragile and precious life is, motivating me to work tirelessly toward my dreams and use my success to uplift others. This scholarship would do more than help fund my education; it would allow me to carry forward Kalia’s spirit of ambition, resilience, and kindness. It would provide me with the financial stability needed to continue my studies, but more importantly, it would empower me to further my mission of giving back to the community. With this support, I would be able to continue my journey of not just becoming a dentist, but also working to inspire the next generation to see themselves in this field, and with the help of the Kalia D. Davis Memorial Scholarship I would be more than humbled to honor her legacy by channeling my passions into meaningful action. Thank you for considering my application. I am committed to continuing Kalia’s legacy of striving for excellence, kindness, and ambition in all areas of my life.

My name is Tyron Boswell, and I am a first-generation college student raised in Boston, Massachusetts. Raised by my mother, who worked tirelessly to support my brother and me, sacrificing so much so that we could pursue greater opportunities; I learned the importance of hard work, resilience, and giving back. Her devotion and selflessness instilled in me a deep commitment not only to pursue the highest level of education but also to create a future where I can give back to her and the broader community that raised me. These values are at the heart of my ambition to enter the field of dentistry. Since I was nine years old, I have always been infatuated with the art of dentistry. What began as a childhood curiosity has now become a passionate and unwavering goal, to become a dentist. This dream is about more than personal success however, it is a mission to break barriers and inspire young Black and Brown children to see dentistry as a career within their reach. With Black dentists making up only 3.8% of the U.S. dental workforce, it is clear that more must be done to change this narrative. I am determined to be part of that change. Growing up, the career options presented to me were often limited to roles that aligned with societal stereotypes. Becoming a basketball star, becoming a maintenance worker, or just holding a typical 9-to-5 job. However, I always knew I wanted more for my future. I pushed myself to think beyond those expectations. I immersed myself in learning about oral diseases, explored how modern medicines enhance dental care, and took every opportunity during my own dental appointments to ask questions and seek advice. I envisioned myself standing in the same scrubs as my dentist, treating patients, and making a difference. I believe it is my responsibility to pave a path for those who follow. Representation matters, and I want to show young people from all underrepresented backgrounds that they belong in the healthcare field. Growing up I rarely saw those that looked like me in the dental field and I plan to change that. My goal is to organize workshops and community events where successful African American dentists can share their stories of resilience and triumph. These events will not only showcase the success stories of Black dentists but also provide young students with tangible insights into the skills and experiences needed to excel in the field. In addition to inspiration, these workshops will teach practical dental skills, such as basic dental care, and an understanding of the diverse career paths wisthin dentistry. By providing students with the tools and knowledge they need, I hope to give them a head start on their journey toward becoming dentists or other healthcare professionals. Moreover, these events will offer the support and motivation that many young people lack when pursuing careers in underrepresented fields. I want to show them that their dreams are possible and that they deserve to occupy these spaces.

From a young age, I have been infatuated with the science of dentistry. Since I was just nine years old, I’ve dreamed of becoming a dentist, a dream that slowly has evolved into a passionate and unwavering goal. Today, as I enter college to pursue a biology degree, I am more determined than ever to accomplish this aspiration, knowing that it is not only a personal achievement but also a means to positively impact those around me; as I aim to serve as a role model and inspire young Black and Brown children of the future to realize that a career in dentistry is within their reach. Too often do we see a lack of representation in this field, especially among African Americans. With Black dentists making up only 3.8% of the U.S. dental workforce, it’s clear that more needs to be done to change this narrative. I want to be a part of that change. Growing up, the career options presented to me were often limited to roles that seemed to align with the stereotypical expectations of society. Becoming a basketball phenom, a maintenance worker, or holding down a regular 9-to-5. However, I always knew I wanted something more. Even as a child, I yearned for a future that stretched beyond the usual expectations placed upon me. Asking thoughtful questions and seeking advice about how to pursue a career in their field, as they walk in the scrubs I too want to be standing in someday. This proactive approach to learning and growth has been more than beneficial in shaping my knowledge as well. However, my passion for dentistry is not just about my personal success. It is also about my responsibility to pave a path for those who are to follow. Especially those who may never have considered dentistry as a viable career, not due to the lack of interest, but instead the lack of inclusion. Growing up, I've seen and know firsthand how lack of representation in this field can discourage young people from pursuing careers in healthcare. One of my goals is to organize workshops and community events where successful African American dentists can share their stories of resilience, grit, and triumph. These panels will not only showcase the success stories of Black dentists but also provide young students with tangible insights into the skills and experiences needed to excel in the field. By exposing young boys and girls to a variety of role models, I hope to empower them to pursue careers they may have previously thought were only imaginable. In addition to inspiring their minds, these events would teach practical skills, such as the basics of dental care, and promote an understanding of the diverse career paths within dentistry. By giving students the tools and knowledge they need, I can help them get a head start on their journey toward becoming dentists or other healthcare professionals. Moreover, these workshops would offer the unwavering support and motivation that many young people lack when pursuing careers in fields where they are underrepresented. I want to show them that they belong in these spaces and that their dreams are possible.

Since I could remember, I had always been labeled a "worrier" when, in fact, it was much more than that, from jumping out of the shower screaming bloody murder to sweating out of my clothes and throwing up before any big event. I had constantly been trying to run away from the most inescapable thing; my mind. My parents tried everything they could to better something they had never experienced or seen. From therapy to yoga, to meditation, and even changing my diet. Nothing seemed to work as we'd hoped it would, and slowly, over time, my feelings and reactions became our new normal. However my experiences were far from normal, entering middle school with reports of school shootings at their peak. I found my self hiding my shoes, and curled over every toilet bowl in the house fearful for what may come. My worries were valid but the reactions were extreme, I knew this and so desperately wanted help. Fearful of the unknown I constantly isolated myself, missing out on experiences, friendships and opportunities I may never be able to face again. From having a panic attack at my winter formal to throwing up on my chromebook during MCAS testing. Anxiety had its hands on the wheel for so long when it came to my quality of life. As time carried on and I grew older, certain outbursts of mine became minuscule, and the management of it all was 100% easier. I could shower without being overtaken by my own thoughts, silence no longer made me anxious, and I was ultimately feeling as if I were in a better place mentally and I had maybe "grown out" of my anxious ways. That was until my sophomore year of high school. Which I could say was the most catastrophic year of my high school experience. I began the year feeling so heavily overwhelmed with new material, a brand new school building, and even greater responsibilities. The adjustment felt draining, and each day I came home, all I would want to do was cry and sleep. This cycle continued for some time, any anxious thoughts or feelings that came to mind were immediately met with my brain shutting down and me becoming overwhelmed, however, as time progressed and my heightened emotions became more frequent, I began to feel more alone than ever, and not even being able to go to my parents; with fear of consequences due to my now negatively impacted grades. I began to sulk and sit in isolation for days on end, not wanting to partake in anything not required of me, it got so bad to the point of me becoming physically ill. That, for me, was a sign to speak with my parents about all that was going on inside my head. In doing so they were able to hear, understand, and support me better than I had ever imagined. We began to work as a family, setting goals for me to accomplish each week, to better my relationship with anxiety and take back control over my life. That very next week, we met with my Doctor, who I told everything; from the countless sleepless nights, to being fearful of my own thoughts. I laid it all out start to finish. I left that hospital with two diagnoses and a prescription. The news, for some, may have been devastating to hear; however, I felt a bit of relief. Not knowing what I could truly do to better my mental state left me feeling as if I was a prisoner. Trapped in my mind, to battle day and night, for as long as I lived. It became tiring and left me with a constant fear in the back of my head. I had anxiety and, unfortunately, developed depression in the process of trying to aid myself. This experience has shown me that I cannot isolate myself in fear of the unknown, as missed opportunities and experience are things I am never able to get back. Fearing the unknown will do nothing but drive me mad, as it is not in my control. Focusing on what I have the ultimate control over is a way I able to claim my mental back, continuing to focus on my academics and flourish in life for as long I can.

My mother, Faith, embodies what it means to be a leader: she is a loving parent, an esteemed educator, and a resilient role model. Growing up in Boston, my mother faced significant challenges. She lived with her father, who was their family's sole provider. They moved frequently in and out of homes until she was around 13 years old, and the constant fear of packing up and moving her life around lingered with her for her entire school career, However, instead of succumbing to the weight of her challenges, she overcame her obstacles, and viewed her limited time, as opportunities to make lasting memories and an impact everywhere she went. With the burden of losing her own mom at the young age of 4, and her father constantly consumed by work. She didn't have many adult outlets, leaving her constantly navigating life on her own. Growing up my situation was slightly similar to hers, as my father was not in the picture. However, my mom never made me feel the absence of a father figure in my life. With few male role models in my life, she had to take on many roles. Whether it was driving me to sports practices, helping me with my homework, planning dinner, or reading bedtime stories. My mother was the jack of all trades, all whilst being able to grade her student's papers. As I grew older, I began to recognize the immense time, effort, and dedication my mom invested in my brother and me. It became a burning passion of mine, to repay her for all the sacrifices she has made thus far. She, as a strong, independent, educated, black woman; has motivated me my entire life to push through adversity, and has taught me a surplus of lessons along the way. My mother is a go-getter, who has proven time and time again that anything is possible when effort and dedication are applied. She has shown me that I can accomplish my goals without the help of others, and has demonstrated that though many paths in life are going to call for strength and resilience towards pressure, the outcome will always end out positive. Knowing her story, and the struggles she's faced, all while still managing to have a successful and stable life, pushes me to want better for my future family and generations to come. Inspired by my mother’s unwavering strength, I am committed to pursuing my education with purpose, ensuring that I not only achieve my own goals but also work to uplift others in my community. I aspire to create a legacy of resilience and impact, just as she has done.

I began the year feeling so heavily overwhelmed with new material, a brand new school building, and even greater responsibilities. The adjustment felt draining, and each day I came home, all I would want to do was cry and sleep. I confided in my friends about my feelings, and they too shared their struggles; as we bonded and I expressed how I would constantly feel isolated and scared, my friend offered me their weed pen, stating, "It'll help calm you down." Naive and, at this point in time, extremely desperate for some type of remedy, I take the pen and use it. I slowly felt the pit in my stomach filling itself back to the brim, I felt my day's long headache disperse, and I even noticed my foot was no longer bouncing at 100 mph. I was finally at peace until I wasn't. This cycle continued for some time, any anxious thoughts or feelings that came to mind were immediately met with an inhale and exhale of my pen, however, as time progressed and my usage became more frequent, the relaxation effects slowly diminished, leaving me back where I started. However, with the duality of a new dependency on my pen and the constant feeling of anxiousness, I began to feel more alone than ever, and not being able to go to my parents with fear of consequences heightened this feeling even more. I began to sulk and sit in isolation for days on end, not wanting to partake in anything not required of me, it got so bad to the point of me becoming physically ill. That, for me, was a sign to speak with my parents about all that was going on inside my head, though I left out many details of ways I attempted to better my mental, they were able to hear, understand, and support me better than ever. That very week, we met with my Doctor, who I told everything; I left that hospital with two diagnoses and a prescription. The news, for some, may have been devastating to hear; however, I felt a bit of relief. Not knowing exactly what was making me act the way I did left me with constant fear in the back of my head. I had anxiety and, unfortunately, developed depression in the process of trying to help myself. This experience has shown me that I am not in isolation, It has taught me to accept my struggles and learn to better myself instead of sulking in defeat.
