I have a strong passion for learning and deeply appreciate any support that helps me continue my educational journey. I completed my associate’s degree in computer information after high school in 2004 and graduated with a 3.89 GPA. Afterward, I took a long break from school because of the financial burden and because my wife and I were busy raising our five children. During those years, my focus was on providing for my family and serving in my church and community, but the desire to continue my education never left me. As my family grew and inflation increased our cost of living, I realized that my current employment situation was no longer adequate to meet our needs. When I applied for a promotion with my employer, I encountered a significant roadblock: nearly every position that matched my skills required at least a bachelor’s degree. I applied for several roles at other companies and faced the same barrier. After much thought, prayer, and counsel, I decided in 2023 to return to school to pursue my bachelor’s degree in computer science. I enrolled in an online program at Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU), which offered the flexibility I needed to balance school with full-time work and family responsibilities. Many days, I used my lunch break to complete assignments so I could minimize time away from my family in the evenings. I financed most of my degree through the federal Pell Grant and my employer’s tuition assistance program, for which I am incredibly grateful. Through discipline, sacrifice, and determination, I completed my bachelor’s degree at the beginning of 2026 with a 4.0 GPA and earned a place on the President’s List each semester. After graduation, I felt encouraged to continue my education and pursue a master’s degree in computer science. SNHU recently launched a new CS master’s program, and I wanted to take advantage of the opportunity while I was still in the rhythm of academic work. I began the program in February of this year and am now nearing the completion of my first term. While I am still able to use my employer’s tuition reimbursement program, it only covers roughly two courses per calendar year. To stay enrolled year-round and graduate on time, I will need additional financial assistance. I am currently employed as a software engineer, where I work on software used in non-critical medical devices such as patient entertainment systems and call signaling devices. Through my education, I have gained the skills to develop Android applications used by patients, embedded firmware that assists hospital staff, and automation scripts that simplify tasks for my team. I feel a great sense of accomplishment knowing that the work I do helps improve the hospital experience for both patients and caregivers. My goal is to continue growing in this field and eventually become a senior engineer or software architect who leads projects that improve patient care and community services. Beyond my professional work, I volunteer my programming skills to support my local community in Buffalo, NY. One of my most meaningful contributions has been developing a web application for the Buffalo Dream Center’s Boxes of Love program. Each year, this program distributes toys and food to approximately 3,500 families during the Christmas season and provides additional support to churches and organizations throughout the region. Using the skills I gained through my education, I helped transition the program from a paper-based system to a web-based platform that makes it easier for applicants to sign up and significantly reduces the workload for volunteers. The new software was deployed for the 2025 Christmas season, and the staff and recipients provided overwhelmingly positive feedback. This year, I plan to expand the system’s capabilities and continue supporting the program. I also volunteer my time and skills to assist local churches. One of my upcoming projects is developing an online database for a church to help them better manage their outreach efforts. My faith plays a central role in my desire to serve others. The verse “freely you have received, freely give” guides the way I view the talents and opportunities God has given me. I believe it is important to use my abilities to serve my family, church, workplace, and community. SNHU offers graduate terms every ten weeks, and my goal is to take one class each term and graduate in January 2028. This scholarship will help me continue my education without interruption and allow me to reach my goal in a timely manner.
