Driving under the influence is one of the most preventable causes of injury and death on our roads. From both a moral and technical standpoint, DUIs have serious consequences that extend far beyond the driver. They affect innocent families, friends, communities, and everyone who shares the road. Morally, choosing to drive while impaired means placing personal convenience above the safety of others. Alcohol and drugs reduce judgment, slow reaction times, impair coordination, and increase risky decision-making. When someone chooses to drive under the influence, they are accepting a level of risk that can permanently alter or end another person's life. The emotional impact on victims, families, and even the impaired driver can last forever. Technically, the dangers are well documented. Modern vehicles require constant attention and quick decision-making. Impairment affects vision, reaction time, situational awareness, and the ability to control a vehicle safely. As an automotive technology student, I understand how advanced vehicle safety systems have become, but no technology can completely overcome an impaired driver's poor judgment. Preventing DUIs requires both personal responsibility and technological solutions. Planning ahead by using designated drivers, rideshare services, public transportation, or staying overnight can eliminate the risk entirely. Family members and friends also play an important role by encouraging responsible decisions and intervening when someone should not be driving. Technology can further reduce DUI incidents through ignition interlock devices, alcohol detection systems, driver monitoring technology, and public awareness campaigns. As automotive technology continues to advance, manufacturers have an opportunity to make vehicles even safer while still emphasizing personal accountability. The impact of a DUI reaches far beyond a single moment. Families can lose loved ones, friendships can be damaged, careers can be destroyed, and communities can suffer unimaginable loss. Preventing DUIs requires a commitment from individuals, families, and society as a whole. By combining responsible choices with advancing technology, we can save lives and create safer roads for everyone.

Rob Novak Memorial Automotive Technology Scholarship
I chose to pursue a career in the automotive technology industry because it allows me to combine discipline, hands-on skill, and problem-solving into meaningful work. As a Navy veteran, husband, and father of four, I have learned the value of responsibility, hard work, and providing for my family. The automotive field gives me the opportunity to apply those values every day while building a stable and purpose-driven future. What I enjoy most about automotive technology is the process of diagnosing and repairing vehicles. Every job requires focus, attention to detail, and the ability to solve real-world problems. There is a strong sense of pride in taking something that is not working and restoring it to full function. More importantly, I understand that reliable transportation is essential for families, and I take seriously the role I play in helping people stay on the road. My goal is to become a highly skilled automotive technician and eventually grow a mobile repair business that provides honest, reliable, and accessible service to my community. I want to build a reputation based on trust, quality work, and integrity—values that align with the kind of dedication this scholarship represents. Receiving the Rob Novak Memorial Scholarship would directly support my education by helping cover the cost of tools, training, and certifications. It would allow me to stay focused on developing my skills while continuing to provide for my family. More importantly, it would be an investment in someone committed to working hard, improving every day, and using their skills to serve others.

      Sam Stoy "Captain America" Scholarship
I chose to enroll at Tidewater Tech because I wanted to build a career based on skill, discipline, and long-term stability. As a Navy veteran and a father of four, I understand the importance of structure and responsibility. Tidewater Tech stood out to me because of its hands-on training and focus on preparing students for real-world success in the automotive field. The automotive program interests me because it aligns with who I am—a problem solver who takes pride in working with my hands. Diagnosing and repairing vehicles requires attention to detail, critical thinking, and accountability. For many people, a vehicle is essential to their livelihood, and I take that responsibility seriously. I am motivated not just to fix cars, but to provide reliable service that people can depend on. Helping others has always been a core part of my life. During my time in the Navy, I served in leadership roles where I guided and supported others in high-pressure situations. That experience shaped how I approach leadership today—by leading from the front and being someone others can rely on. Outside of that, I consistently help friends, family, and members of my community with vehicle repairs and maintenance. Whether it’s diagnosing an issue, saving someone money by doing the work myself, or teaching them basic maintenance skills, I take pride in being a resource for others. I understand how important reliable transportation is, especially for working families, and I do what I can to make a difference. Sam Stoy’s example of leadership through service reflects the values I live by. I am committed not only to advancing my own skills through the automotive program, but also to using those skills to help others and strengthen my community.
