My name is Tanashia Smith, and I am a Food and Nutrition major entering my junior year of college. As a first-generation college student, earning a college degree means more to me than simply receiving a diploma. It represents hope, opportunity, and the chance to create a future that my parents were not able to have. My journey through higher education has shaped me into a stronger, more determined person, and it continues to remind me why education is one of the most valuable investments anyone can make. Education is important to me because it gives me purpose and something to continuously work toward. It has opened doors that once seemed out of reach and has shown me that my dreams are possible through hard work and perseverance. Neither of my parents had the opportunity to finish high school or continue their education, but they never allowed their circumstances to become excuses. Instead, they made countless sacrifices to ensure that I had opportunities they never experienced. Their encouragement and belief in me have motivated me to keep pushing forward, even during the most difficult moments of my college journey. Being able to say that I have made it to my junior year of college is not only an accomplishment for me, but also a reflection of their love, sacrifices, and unwavering support. My path through college has not always been easy. Like many students, I have experienced setbacks that challenged my confidence and tested my determination. There were moments when I questioned myself and wondered if I was capable of reaching my goals. However, those challenges taught me resilience, discipline, and the importance of never giving up. Every obstacle became an opportunity to grow, and every success reminded me that perseverance is often more important than perfection. These experiences have helped shape the person I am becoming and have strengthened my commitment to earning my degree. As I continue my education, my goal is to become a registered dietitian and use my knowledge to improve the health and well-being of others. I believe that nutrition is a powerful tool that can change lives, and I want to educate individuals and families on how to make healthier choices that improve their quality of life. I hope to use my education not only to build a successful career but also to serve communities that may not always have access to reliable nutrition education and resources. The legacy I hope to leave is one of resilience, compassion, and determination. I want to be remembered as someone who refused to let obstacles define her future and who used every challenge as motivation to keep moving forward. I hope my journey inspires my younger siblings, cousins, and other first-generation students to believe that their dreams are achievable, regardless of where they come from or the barriers they face. I want them to see that success is not determined by the opportunities you are born into but by the effort, dedication, and faith you put into creating your own path. Most importantly, I want my legacy to honor my parents. Their sacrifices have given me opportunities they never had, and every milestone I reach is a reflection of their love and support. Earning my degree will not only be a personal achievement but also a way of thanking them for believing in me. My education is more than a goal—it is the foundation for the life I hope to build and the positive impact I hope to leave on my family, my community, and future generations.
    Amber D. Hudson Memorial Scholarship
Hello, my name is Tanashia Smith, and I am a 19 year old junior studying Food and Nutrition at South Carolina State University. Food has always been a major part of my life. I come from a family that loves to cook, and growing up, I was surrounded by food, family meals, and different cultural dishes. Some of my favorite memories were made in the kitchen, watching family members prepare meals and bring everyone together around the table. As I got older, I began to notice that while my family worked hard to provide meals, it was not always easy to make nutritious choices. I also started to see how poor nutrition could affect a person’s health over time. Watching some of my loved ones struggle with their health opened my eyes to the importance of nutrition and inspired me to pursue a degree in Food and Nutrition. I realized that I wanted to help people understand how food impacts their bodies and empower them to make healthier choices. Since my freshman year of college, I have known that I wanted to become a Registered Dietitian. Many people have told me that nutrition is not a career that makes a lot of money, but that has never influenced my decision. I chose this field because it is something I genuinely love. My passion comes from wanting to help others live healthier, happier lives and from wanting to make a difference in communities that lack access to nutritious foods and nutrition education. The story of Amber D. Hudson deeply resonated with me. Learning about her battle with cancer and how her family later discovered the significant role nutrition can play in the prevention, progression, and sometimes regression of disease reminded me why this field is so important. Her story showed me that nutrition is not just about eating healthy—it can be a powerful tool that improves both the quantity and quality of life. As a future dietitian, I want to help address food deserts in my community and educate individuals and families about the importance of nutrition. I want people to understand that food is one of the most important things our bodies need to maintain a healthy life. Through education, community outreach, and personalized nutrition guidance, I hope to help people prevent chronic diseases and improve their overall well-being. Receiving the Amber D. Hudson Memorial Scholarship would mean so much to me. As a first-generation college student working toward my dream of becoming a Registered Dietitian, financial support would help me continue my education and stay focused on achieving my goals. More importantly, this scholarship would allow me to continue preparing for a career dedicated to serving others. I am committed to using my education and passion for nutrition to make a lasting impact on individuals, families, and communities for years to come.
