I worked hard in school and was fortunate enough to receive a scholarship to study in the United States. This was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and I was eager to make the most of it. My educational pursuits have been the primary focus of my life since coming to the United States. I am currently pursuing a Master's degree in Information Technology, with a focus on data analysis and software development. I have always been interested in technology and how it can be used to improve people's lives, and I believe that my education will allow me to make a positive impact in my community and beyond. In addition to my studies, I have been actively involved in my community. I have volunteered at local schools, teaching computer skills and helping students with their homework. After joining Concord University for my undergrad studies, I joined a work-study for the Geology Department as a Software Developer to help me pay for my tuition. This study was mainly focused on data mining and data manipulation to import data from various files such as excel and CSV files to different databases. This work-study gave me a bit of an insight into what I could do as a Data Scientist and how I could be of help to my community. Following this, I decided to further my studies beyond my undergraduate and get my MS in Information Systems; with God's grace, I got accepted to John Hopkins for the same program I was interested in. I am prepared to put my all into my education and become a knowledgeable Data Scientist with a purpose. I aspire to become a data scientist and help my community back home in Ethiopia in this aspect. The current living conditions of most Ethiopians is below the poverty line. Our country is several steps behind in the technological aspect. Most governmental and private offices still use paper-based and outdated systems to provide their services. This exhausts both the service providers and the service receivers. Civil servants hate their jobs and their whole living situation including the country itself, and citizens are even more inclined to blame the government offices and the government itself, leading to an even more increased hatred towards the bureaucracy. There have been various attempts to improve the working conditions in Ethiopia; there are visible changes happening. However, more needs to be done. We have got a long way to go as a developing country. We need to understand the importance of information systems in bettering businesses and satisfying customers. Utilizing the ever-changing nature of information systems, it is possible to alleviate poverty and develop the economy of our country. Becoming a data scientist has been my goal since the moment I understood how helpful understanding data and manipulating it is in any problem-solving process. Acquiring or producing data by itself is not enough to develop a country. The accumulated data should be used for future predictions, policy-making, and accountability; these improvements in a country promise a country with a more stable economy and better living and/or working conditions. We just need to be able to understand how to utilize technology to our benefit and strategize plans to create changes. In order to make this happen, we need more data scientists in Ethiopia; in this regard, I believe I can produce a change even in the slightest form, which will in turn produce vast ripple effects.

As an African international student in the United States, it is not easy pursuing an education. I came to the states at the age of seventeen in the hopes of getting a better education. As an international student, I had to pay way more than regular (in-state) tuition for college. The out-of-state rates were a lot higher; that is one of the reasons I didn't want to go to college. My mother is a single mom taking care of me and my two sisters. After my father passed away a few years ago, my mom had to go through the unimaginable to support me and my sisters. I didn't want to burden her with having to pay insanely expensive tuition just so that I can get a degree. But she was very adamant about it and wouldn't back down. She pushed me to go abroad and have a better education and better opportunities; so I did. With God's grace, I was able to graduate college in three years with a 3.9 GPA. I wanted so badly to make my mom proud, I was focused only on my studies the entire time I was doing my undergraduate. However, I am left with a huge debt that I have to pay off. And being an international student doesn't make it easy. Federal loans don't apply to foreigners, so the student loans available to us are from private banks and financial institutions. The APRs and the interest rates from such institutions are considerably higher than the ones from Federal loans. This makes it harder for students to pay the loans over a longer period of time. I plan to pay off my debts as quickly as I can, but there's so much I can do in a world where a black woman is not given fair and equal opportunities, be it in jobs or wages. Being a black woman in STEM specifically is definitely not easy; the constant feeling like I don't belong or like I'm alone. However, growing up in a household where women made things happen with or without a man, I won't give up and will keep pushing to be debt-free and be able to take care of my mom. I have hope and aspiration to become an example to so many girls of color dreaming to become whatever their heart desires. I want to be able to help single mothers all around the world who struggle to raise their kids. I want to be an example for children who grew up under single mothers by showing the world that women if given the chance and right opportunities can become anything and everything. I am grateful that there are opportunities like this where I can make my story heard. I am honored to be considered for this scholarship.

In my junior year, I joined a work-study for the Geology Department at Concord University as a Microprobe Lab Software Developer. This study was mainly focused on data mining, data interpretation, and data manipulation to import data from various files such as excel and CSV files to different databases. I worked with Python and various libraries to do the tasks. The more I participated in this work-study, the more I realized I was greatly fond of it. This work-study gave me a bit of an insight into what I could do as a Data Scientist and how I could be of help to my community. I believe life is whatever we make it to be. This world is not without its ups and downs; we all, as humans go through different struggles and hurdles. But I believe what makes life worth living is our outlook on what happens in our lives. One of my friends used to say 'Even though we are not in charge or in control of the things that might happen to us, we are the ones who decide how to react to them.' In the face of adversity, I always try to remember this statement. Life happens, with all its good and bad, happy and sad, and everything in between; In this hectic journey, we can choose to make the best out of all the things we go through because nonetheless, life goes on. We all have our high and low points in life, but being able to enjoy and break through this journey makes it worth it. After losing my father and my closest aunt at a young age, I used to believe that life isn't that important and could end at any second, so why try so hard? Why put in all the efforts when it could all be in vain the moment I pass? Without even knowing it, I think I developed a victim mentality; I started wondering why all my friends had full families and were living their best lives when I'm just existing. You can even say that I used to think that I was the only person struggling in this world; I kept asking why is this happening to me? Why me? I entered into a very dark space where I used to think that I was the victim in every situation. However, as I grew up and started maturing, I began to realize just how toxic and destructive the mindset that I had was. I started to focus on what makes me joyous and excited. Questions I'd ask myself like 'Why me?' or 'Why is this and that happening to me?' changed into 'How I can move past this experience?', 'How can I spin what's happening to better me as a person?' Whenever I would encounter a challenge, I began to train myself to always look at the better and more optimistic side. As I crawled out of the noxious cave of a mindset that I was in, I began to realize how everyone has their own hurdles they are trying to jump over. Life has and will continue to have and bring various challenges our way but how we get through and deal with them is all up to us. Challenges are not meant to be run or hidden from, but rather to be embraced. I believe that every challenge that we encounter shapes us to become a better version of ourselves. Most of us have an end goal in life or a point where we want to get to; and in this journey, we keep forgetting that we spend most of our lifetime if not all, in this pursuit. So if we don't enjoy and strive through our journey, can we really say we lived?
