My name is Tristin Ziola, and I am currently a Senior at Michigan State University pursuing my Bachelor’s degree in Turfgrass Management and a minor in Agribusiness Management. Attending Michigan State has allowed me to build a strong foundation in turfgrass management and horticulture. Growing up on a crop farm I always had a passion for agriculture, and knew I wanted to do it as a career but didn’t know what. As I got into high school and started participating in FFA I decided to participate in the Greenhand Public Speaking contest, the only problem was I didn’t know what to write my speech on. My Advisor recommended sports turfgrass since I was very active in athletics all throughout my life and I decided to give it a try. From there on I always knew exactly what I wanted to do for a living because it combined both my passions for agriculture and sports. After starting my academic career at Michigan State I have been lucky enough to participate in multiple internships and jobs in a variety of places and sports. Each of these teaching me valuable hands-on experience which has strengthened my technical skills and deepened my appreciation and love for this profession. Beyond my current academics, I am committed to excellence, discipline, and continuous learning. This scholarship would enable me to focus more intently on my studies, gain further hands-on experience, and ultimately achieve my dream of contributing to the world of professional sports. I plan to make a difference in the landscape industry by focusing my efforts on sports turf management, particularly within professional sports and the NFL. My ultimate goal is to contribute to the development and maintenance of top-tier playing surfaces that enhance athlete performance, ensure safety, and elevate the overall game experience for players and fans. One of the keyways I aim to make an impact is by combining scientific knowledge and hands-on expertise to maintain fields that meet the highest standards of quality. I believe in staying at the forefront of industry advancements, such as implementing sustainable practices, utilizing innovative turf care techniques, and integrating new technologies to optimize field conditions. By prioritizing sustainability and efficiency, I hope to set an example of how professional sports organizations can balance environmental responsibility with performance excellence. What inspires me most about this field is the unique blend of science, art, and athletics. Sports turf management is more than just maintaining grass; it’s about creating a foundation for success in high-stakes environments. A well-maintained field can significantly impact the outcome of a game and the safety of the athletes. Knowing that my work could contribute to a memorable touchdown or protect a player from injury motivates me to strive for excellence every day. I also aim to foster collaboration and mentorship within the industry. By sharing knowledge and working alongside others passionate about the field, I hope to contribute to raising the overall standards in sports field management. Whether it’s mentoring future turf managers or collaborating with colleagues to solve challenges, I want to build a legacy of innovation and teamwork. Ultimately, my passion for professional sports, particularly the NFL, drives my commitment to this career path. Growing up as a fan/athlete and seeing the role that immaculate fields play in the game inspired me to pursue this field. I’m excited to bring my dedication and skills to an industry that combines my love for sports with my love for agriculture. I’m determined to leave a lasting impact by contributing to safer, high-quality fields that enhance the experience for players, teams, and fans alike.
