John J. DiPietro COME OUT STRONG Scholarship
My vocal coach asked if I would like to perform at Daniel Pearl World music Days when i was just 12 years old. I looked up Daniel Pearl and found out that he was a journalist and musician who was brutally murdered in Pakistan in 2002, the year I was born. I was encouraged by the music events started around the globe in his name and decided to perform at the event in Santa Monica. His language helped me to write a song called, “Sign in the Sky” with my sister and found it was a hopeful message and a perfect choice for the event. The performance went well and I was able to actually meet Daniel’s parents and hear his dad speak. It was truly an honor to hear from him that Daniel believed that music is a universal language that touches people across the globe and can unify people. This really rings true for me and is the focus of my career goals. I am inspired by this and Daniel in all my songwriting. He also practiced violin every day and was quite proficient and inspires me to practice strong daily. Just last year I wrote and recorded a group global unity song with friends in and out of the entertainment industry which has won many international awards, it’s also been performed by many schools across the globe which is truly inspiring. Like Daniel, I believe music’s language should deliver a meaningful message and I try to do this in all my works and would like to master this in college. I established a teen music jam in my backyard with a full sound system for young people to come and share their voices in song and share their individual messages and help their craft through language and songwriting. This was inspired by the events in Daniel’s name. Most of these talented kids performed on my unity song, Love is the only River. Forging these relationships have helped me communicate and learn better at school, music and language has definitely been positive for my school experience. Given the latest outbreaks of social and racial injustice I worked recently on a duet with a friend from school and my teen musician nights. Cameron Nino, on a song called, “I Can’t Breathe”. The song is in honor of George Floyd but discussea the racial injustice suffered by so many black people in our country at the hands of the police. It’s something that can and will have to stop if we raise our voices together and demand justice. Language in songwriting has allowed me to raise my voice for this message. Music and songwriting has made me more connected to world events and help the fight in my own way as Daniel’s legacy still does. As a singer and a songwriter I can connect with people on a whole other level. I remember singing at the LA Marathon two years ago for the 25,000 participants and becoming so overwhelmed with emotion from the crowd that I burst into tears after the song was finished. A lot of mutual energy goes into every performance and you feel everything from the crowd, the excitement, the pressure, the stress, the highs and the lows. It’s an awesome thing to experience language affecting so many people through music and powerful songs. I also remember performing for 15000 people at the Staples Center in Los Angeles and not being able to hear my guitar at all or it was delayed and I was freaking out during the sound check. The high pressure I’m under to perform perfectly is intense and I ended up memorizing the guitar without hearing it in an hour and just strummed and sang during the performance like it was perfectly natural and it all worked out miraculously. You’ve got to problem solve under pressure and not give in to your emotions too much. And use the pressure and emotion to enhance my performance. This also helps me with taking exams at school. It’s not easy to get up in front of thousands of people and show your talent but there’s also nothing like it in the world and it’s so rewarding personally and on a large scale. Daniel’s ability to report in war torn countries inspires me every day to have the courage to perform. I hope to continue to have monthly music jams in college where people can collaborate and create positive music and messages together. This will help prepare me to be a songwriter and performer and help me be a better student. It’s a legacy I would like to leave as Daniel has left in me with his World Music Days.

Being an artist means sharing my talent with the world to make a change for the better. One of my proudest achievements is by far my song ‘Love is the Only River.’ It’s everything I want to achieve as a musician and a person. I found my voice using words to write lyrics for a global unity song. I wrote this song with Ian Slone, a mentor I’ve had since 6th grade, whom I met when I recorded my first EP. I wrote the lyrics on the need for unity in our disjointed world and Ian wrote the music that went along with my message. I knew it needed to be backed by people my age, the new generation, so I gathered my talented friends in Los Angeles and brought them into a studio for a day. We documented, recorded, and became a family during those hours we had booked. To organize this didn’t feel like work, but what I was meant to do. I had met all these kids through something I call “Teen Music Jams” I host every few months at my home with a complete sound system so teens can perform their originals & new covers in front of a safe and supportive audience. We released the song and submitted it to competitions and festivals to spread the word, which paid off immensely with my most spectacular win of the #1 International Songwriting Contest last year. It went on to be shown at more festivals and performed at events at elementary schools around the world to award shows. This achievement showed I could make my passions become a reality, no matter how young I am. And that language is a powerful communicator through music. I am driven by my inspirations like George Harrison. As an enormous fan of the Beatles, I was always fascinated by the music and genius of their work. As a duo, Lennon and McCartney were unstoppable and would dominate their discography. But that’s where George is special. Alone and in nature, it seemed he found his true genius. The man was truly connected spiritually to the world around him and was a reportedly humble man. His songs were unique and would stay in tune with his niche interests, such as the sitar and Indian culture. It’s a wonder that such an iconic figure never lost touch with himself. I would ask him how to stay true to yourself in the chaos of the world around us. I fall victim to anxieties and fear, which stifles my creativity. It almost seems as if he somehow let that go. I would love to learn from someone whose been at the top and understands music to an extent that I want to. That question is what I want to answer most of all, and I believe George Harrison would give me advice like no other. I am connected to my art through my passion for music and love for the world we live in that I always strive to create a beautiful space within this world we live in with my music. My songs will last forever and I hope they can inspire future generations and give them hope and a feeling of love.

My passion is music! I love your song, “Best Friend” and it’s an honor to apply for this scholarship with such an incredible duo. I would love to make an EP of songs that connect to people spiritually in my indie genre. I love to write about real experiences that others can relate to so my art transmits easily and transcends all cultures, genders and barriers. My ultimate project would be about love and justice for people who are marginalized or bullied in any way and how to manage anxiety in this crazy but beautiful world we live in. I’m inspired by events such as Daniel Pearl World Music Days which I’ve participated in the LA event since I was 12 years old where I’ve learned that music is a universal language that touches people across the world and cultures. “I’m really quite simple. I plant flowers and watch them grow… I stay at home and watch the river flow.” George Harrison I am truly inspired by George Harrison. As an enormous fan of the Beatles, I was always fascinated by the music and genius of their work. As a duo, Lennon and McCartney were unstoppable and would dominate their discography. I would ask him how to stay true to yourself in the chaos of the world around us. I fall victim to anxieties and fear, which stifles my creativity. It almost seems as if he somehow let that go. I have as much to offer to the world as any creator like the Beatles. I want to build on the success of my proudest project, “Love is the only River.” I wrote this song with Ian Sloane, a mentor I’ve had since 6th grade, whom I met when I recorded my first EP. I wrote the lyrics on the need for unity in our disjointed world and Ian wrote the music that went along with my message. It also won me a 5 week scholarship to berklee college of music’s summer program which I attended summer of 2019. This achievement showed I could make my passions become a reality, no matter how young I am. This scholarship would help me reach and attend the best school to learn what I need to do to make my next project and passion a huge success. I would also hope to continue my music jams and collaborations in college. As a powerful woman, like the two of you, I have the talent and the potential to make the world a better place through my music. There aren’t a lot of scholarships out there like this one that caters to modern musicians so I’m grateful for the opportunity. https://youtu.be/BBBErGV-YIE

My Dad became disabled two years ago and as the sole breadwinner it’s been hard on the family. This scholarship will help defray the costs of college for me and is truly necessary. I appreciate your consideration of my talent, commitment and hard work to achieve all my wildest dreams and goals. Thank you. I am truly inspired by George Harrison. I can use this inspiration to let go of my fears. We released the song and submitted the music video to competitions and festivals to spread the word, which paid off immensely with my most spectacular win of the #1 International Songwriting Contest last year. It went on to be shown at more festivals and performed at events at elementary schools around the world to award shows. This achievement showed I could make my passions become a reality, no matter how young I am. This scholarship would help me reach and attend the best school to learn what I need to do to make my next project a huge success. I have the talent and the potential to make the world a better place through my music. Here is the project I’m most proud of which I won the international songwriting contest for: https://youtu.be/BBBErGV-YIE Thank you for this opportunity!

You have to love yourself in order to love others. I’ve been blessed with a good family who loves me and encourages me in my passions and dreams. I’m a singer/songwriter and need confidence to go on stage and perform. Sometimes I don’t feel like I’m good enough or my voice isn’t good enough and dive into low self esteem but for the sake of the show I have to overcome it. The confidence I’ve gotten from being a singer has allowed me to pursue my dreams and songwrite about love & unity. One of my proudest achievements is by far my song ‘Love is the Only River.’ It’s everything I want to achieve as a musician and a person. I wrote this song with Ian Slone, a mentor I’ve had since 6th grade, whom I met when I recorded my first EP. Ian gave me the confidence to write the lyrics on the need for unity in our disjointed world and Ian wrote the music that went along with my message. The higher purpose of the message also keeps me in high self esteem. Knowing myself and my own passions allow me to share this with friends and family and the world through my music. We released the song and submitted it to competitions and festivals to spread the word, which paid off immensely with my most spectacular win of the #1 International Songwriting Contest last year. It went on to be shown and win at more festivals and performed at events from elementary schools around the world to award shows. This achievement showed I could make my passions become a reality, no matter how young I am and if I love myself I can show the world what love is.

We released the song and submitted it to competitions and festivals to spread the word, which paid off immensely with my most spectacular win of the #1 International Songwriting Contest last year. It went on to be shown at more festivals and performed at events at elementary schools around the world to award shows. This achievement showed I could make my philanthropic passions become a reality, no matter how young I am. I plan on using this grant to help fund my college so I can be a performer who gives back to her community every day.
