Since I was 4 years old, I have always wanted to work in the medical field and with children. I have always had a passion for medicine and working with children, so I thought why not combine them and become a nurse? I have a huge heart and I love helping people and being there for them when they need somebody. Nursing is one of the few professions that allows you to help not only others but also helps you. It is an exciting, unpredictable, diverse profession that provides several opportunities to gain experience in something new every day. The work is challenging, but at the end of the day, I would be able to say that this is the path I chose, and I am proud of it, then I will remember that feeling of helping a stranger and I will feel delighted that I chose this profession. Whenever I would go to the doctor I could tell that some of the nurses are passionate about their job, and they genuinely care about every patient they come across. Being able to observe them and view how interactive they were, I just knew and felt in my heart that I would love to be a part of the nursing field. It is my dream to work in pediatrics. It doesn’t matter if I am a traveling nurse or just a nurse in a hospital, I am very passionate about helping children on the medical side. I genuinely believe I am capable and have what it takes to become a nurse. I plan to make a positive impact through my degree because I plan on going somewhere that is really in need of nurses since there is a nursing shortage in the world. I want to make a difference in the world and impact others' lives every day that I'm in the field because you never know what people are going through and a simple smile can make their day a hundred times better. I graduated college with a social work major and a biology minor in April 2023. I will be attending nursing school in Fall 2023. Having a social work degree has taught me skills in critical thinking and assessment that can help me in the medical field. Having a background in social work also means that I could assist behind the scenes with patients and families to ensure they have the resources they need to heal, as well as address their emotional and psychosocial needs. I also feel that I could be more of an advocate for patients and their families to help them understand their concerns and bring them some ease if they are stressed or upset.

I've known I wanted to work with children and in the medical industry since I was four years old. I've always had a passion for helping people and for dealing with kids, so I figured why not combine those interests and become a nurse? I love helping people and being there for them when they need someone, and I have a pretty big heart. One of the rare careers that allows you to both help others and yourself is nursing. It offers many opportunities to discover something new every day and is an interesting, unpredictable, and diverse profession. Although the labor is difficult if, at the end of the day, I can say that this is the career path I chose and that I am proud of it, then I will recall how good it felt to assist a complete stranger and I will be overjoyed that I picked this line of work. I originally planned to major in biology and pursue a career in medicine, but I became interested in social work because I think that everyone who wants to work in the medical area needs to have some form of social work training. I can use the critical thinking and assessment abilities I learned while earning my social work degree to my advantage in the medical industry. Due to my expertise in social work, I am also able to work behind the scenes with patients and their families to meet their emotional and psychological needs as well as make sure they have the resources they need to recuperate. In order to help patients and their families comprehend their concerns and provide them with some relief if they are stressed or angry, I also think I should do more to act as an advocate for them. I'd say some of my personal strengths include being a natural leader, being tenacious, ambitious, caring, committed, flexible, honest, and trustworthy. Every time I went to the doctor, I could tell that some of the nurses were enthusiastic about what they did and had a real concern for every patient they saw. I was able to watch them connect with one another, and as a result, I was able to see how much I would enjoy working in the nursing industry. My ideal job would be in pediatrics. No matter if I work as a traveling nurse or only in a hospital, I am incredibly passionate about providing medical care for children. I honestly think I have what it takes to become a nurse and that I am capable of doing it.

    Athletics Scholarship
I have been in participating in sports since the age of 5 years old and I am now 21 almost 22 years old competing in my last year of competing and it is a very bittersweet moment. Athletics has taught me to persevere when things get tough and that failure, not success, builds character. High school athletics has also allowed me to work outside of my social circle and form relationships with people I would not have met otherwise. Being an athlete has taught me so much over my 17 years of competing and participating in athletics. It has taught me discipline. Participating in sports has had a tremendously positive impact on my life and personal development. It has taught me cooperation and teamwork in just one attempt. It has taught me how to be an effective leader and how to work well under duress. Sports have provided me with very useful problem-solving skills while also keeping me healthy and in great shape. Most importantly, participating in sports has given me the confidence that I know I cannot live without. Constant adversity, as well as mental and physical beatings, are some of the most overlooked, but valuable aspects of sports. High school sports taught me that no matter what adversity life throws at me, there is always light at the end of the tunnel. It may not take me down the path I had envisioned, but it fortifies me in unimaginable ways. Sports have had a far greater impact on me than the crowds can see based on wins and losses. I will be eternally grateful for the opportunities that have come my way, as well as the life lessons that sports have taught me along the way. As a child, I looked up to those older than me, hoping to one day be just like them. Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine myself as that person for younger girls? My decision to return to the sports that had taken a toll on my body was now for the benefit of my teammates and the girls coming up behind me. My perspectives on the court and track, as well as in life, were completely altered. Decisions came at a faster pace than I would have liked. What college, major, or career would I pursue? Sports were no longer the center of my universe. I had a new perspective on my role. The lives I could change as a result of the opportunities I've been given. I am forever grateful for athletics and the person I am today has a lot to do with mine being an athlete for so long.

I have read several books my favorite out of all seems to be The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas because it talks about actual events that we as black people go through daily it just puts it all into perspective for other races in general. I have done several charitable activities such as Mentor Pre-K students, Volunteering at Faith Temple Church of God in Christ Back to School events, Zeta Sigma Rhoer Club Community Service events and projects (Operation Book Bag, Food Giveaways, March of Dime Walk, St. Jude’s Walk, HIV/AIDS Prevention Awareness, etc.), Volunteered with Feed the Starving Children, and Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. – Operation Big Book Bag, March of Dimes, St. Jude’s, Women’s Wellness Initiative, SWIM 1922, Project Cradle Care, Annual Youth Symposium all of these have been from a young age up until now and it helps to see that they're a lot of people that are in need and makes me very appreciative of everything I have. Doing community service and charitable events have made me very empathetic toward others and has made me the person I am today. Giving back is important to me.

I face many obstacles each day with being a Black woman in America I have learned that I am usually going to be the only black woman in the room and with just that it is a lot already I always have people looking at me. I have learned that I have to carry myself in a different way than others might have to or to a higher expectation because I am already being judged by the color of my skin or how my hair looks different from others. I can't just come in the room looking any kind of way I have to always look presentable I can't come into a room with my hair not combed. I have learned that it is very difficult for us Black people to live in this predominantly white world and people will have their opinions and stereotypes of who we are before they even actually have an actual conversation with us or just get to know us. I have learned that no matter what I do or how good I do it there are still people in this world that are going to judge me and try to put me down because I am black. I've also learned it's not important what people think what's important is what I think about myself!!
