Kyle Rairdan Memorial Aviation Scholarship
I want to fly to inspire and give back to the people that make the aviation industry as tremendous and welcoming as it has been in my experiences.
My first flight was immigration to the United States. I recall looking out the window and wondering if I could become a pilot, too, controlling a magnificent airplane soaring in the sky with such confidence, bringing so many people to different parts of the world. When I started considering career paths seriously, I grew hesitant about my dream of becoming a pilot, thinking I would never be able to do something so incredible. However, as I grew older and reflected more on it, my heart told me that I should pursue a career in aviation and soar in the sky. After researching how to get started, I was immediately aware that I would have to overcome hardships due to my financially challenged background. However, I knew there would be opportunities to help fund my training if I put myself out there and made myself known.
I am majoring in Aviation Flight Operations and minoring in Business at San Jose State University (SJSU). I will be graduating this Spring 2024. SJSU has brought me so many opportunities to develop as a well-rounded professional. Through college, I was able to learn skills that would be valuable that I can apply in piloting. The knowledge and skills I have gained will help me with my career goal of becoming an airline pilot. I have found a support system from my peers that would allow me to push through setbacks. I have developed my leadership, collaboration, and communication skills which are all important for being a pilot. I have a deeper understanding of aviation knowledge with my degree. Leaving SJSU, I hope to bring the skills I have learned and a new improved version of myself as I work towards becoming a pilot.
I have managed a busy schedule to balance school, work, and extracurricular. I earned my Private Pilot license in August 2023 and Instrument Rating in April 2024. I am working on my Commercial license. I hope to get a Certified Flight Instructor rating by the end of this year, start teaching, and share my aviation passion with others. I plan on achieving my training milestones by committing to flight training and studies.
Community involvement has been a big part of my life to connect with and give back to others. I have been a San Jose State University (SJSU) Women in Aviation (WIA) Chapter member since Spring 2022. From August 2022 until May 2023, I served as the club’s Vice President. My main task was to organize and promote membership and outreach. I have helped fundraise and plan the Women in Aviation conference trip to Long Beach, California, for ten club members. I was in charge of administrative work for the club, with duties such as recording meetings and event attendance. I also promoted and helped organize fundraising events like the closet and bake sales. Outside of school and aviation, I was a part of the College Corps program for my third year in college, where I volunteered at food banks to address food insecurities. I also worked with underserved children in elementary school to teach them about basic coding. The College Corps program has taught me the importance of serving others, and I want to continue serving my community and those in aviation. If given the scholarship, I would have more time to be involved in what I love, working towards my commercial license and being involved in my community.
