Growing up in Togo, I learned early that opportunity is not always given you have to work for it. When I left my home country, a French-speaking nation, to start a new life here, I faced one of the biggest challenges of my journey. Adjusting to a new language, a new education system, and a completely different environment was difficult, but it strengthened my determination. I remember holding onto my goals even in moments of uncertainty, knowing that giving up was never an option. but I refused to let those obstacles define me. Instead, I used them as motivation to work harder. My parents have been my greatest source of strength throughout this process. They have made countless sacrifices to give me this opportunity, and their belief in me pushes me to keep striving for excellence. I am committed to graduating with honors not only for myself, but to honor everything they have done for me. Attending a Historically Black College or University holds deep meaning for me. It represents more than just higher education; it is a place where culture, identity, and excellence are celebrated. As an African student, attending an HBCU allow me to connect with a diverse community rooted in shared history and resilience. It is an environment where I grow academically while also embracing my identity and learning from others who understand the importance of perseverance and community. Being part of that space gives me a strong sense of belonging and empower me to become a leader. My goal is to succeed academically but also to use my education to make a meaningful difference. Through my chosen field of study, I plan to create opportunities that will uplift my family and contribute to my community. I want to be able to support my parents and give back to them for all they have sacrificed. Beyond my family, I hope to inspire others especially students who come from different countries or face language barriers to believe that they can overcome challenges and achieve their goals. My passion for reading has helped me grow and adapt, while my love for tennis has taught me discipline, focus, and resilience are qualities that continue to guide me through every challenge. This scholarship would support my education but also bring me closer to fulfilling a purpose greater than myself. My journey from Togo to this point has been shaped by courage, sacrifice, and determination. Despite the financial challenges and adapting to a new country and language, I have remained focused on my goals. I am determined to continue this journey by excelling at an HBCU and using my education to create lasting change for my family and my community. My academic interests in criminology, along with a minor in sociology, are deeply connected to my desire to understand and improve the communities around me. Criminology allows me to study the causes of crime, the impact of justice systems, and ways to create safer and more equitable societies. At the same time, sociology helps me understand the broader social structures, inequalities, and cultural influences that shape people’s lives and opportunities. Through my chosen path, I hope to address issues that affect underserved communities, including those facing social and economic challenges. Coming from a different country and adapting to a new system has given me a unique perspective on inequality, justice, and opportunity. I want to use my education to advocate for fairness, support those who may not have a voice, and contribute to building stronger, more inclusive communities
