In third grade, I participated in a program that introduced me to law, and I haven’t looked back since. We had a unit where we put characters from children’s stories on trial, and my group drew “Goldilocks and the Three Bears.” I was chosen to act as Goldilocks’ defense and thought to myself, everyone knows how Goldilocks walked into the Three Bears’ house, went through their things, and ate their food. It felt like there was no way I could win the case, and I was destined to fail. Being the person I am, I wasn’t about to give up without trying. So, I developed a creative defense that persuaded my classmates and teachers. Winning the case made me realize that no matter how certain you feel the outcome may be, you won’t know until you try. That is when I knew this was the path I was meant to take.  Although defending Goldilocks wasn’t technically a public service, it did spark my interest. Public service can come in a variety of forms. I am drawn to the opportunity to foster a sense of civic responsibility and empathy toward others. Contributing my time, skills, and resources to make a positive impact would give my work a sense of purpose in a way nothing else could. I truly believe that public service goes beyond individual gain, and I am confident that pursuing a legal career will allow me to dedicate my talents to serving the greater good and addressing issues for the benefit of society.  Over the years, I discovered the world of law beyond the courtroom and that legal perspectives are integral to business decisions. I am interested in corporate law, specifically antitrust and data privacy law because of the applicability to various industries and potential for far-reaching impacts. With the emergence of artificial intelligence and the race to create the fastest, most reliable tools, regulators are eager to ensure fair competition for all. The quickly changing landscape of the antitrust space will present challenges I am eager to take on and constantly learn from. The same is true for my interest in data privacy matters. Data has become intertwined in our lives, and it is more important than ever to protect the rights of individuals.  I plan on taking the less traditional route to public service in law by first going into Biglaw. With this approach, I aim to learn about antitrust and data privacy issues from the perspective of big corporations. Understanding the reasoning behind decisions that impact millions of people will better equip me to go against them and represent those who may not have the resources to advocate for themselves. I chose to study business as an undergrad to gain a better grasp of the business side of corporate matters. I am confident that this strategy can act as a stepping stone to help me understand the legal aspects of such dealings. I was very intentional when selecting my law school because I wanted a school with a rigorous corporate law curriculum and a robust public interest program. I have a few years before I can start making the impact I hope to have. Until then, I will continue to work towards my goal, create positive change in my community, and surround myself with those committed to creating a more equitable world for others.
