“It spun faster and faster. Then everything was still. Absolutely still.” The words of The Magic Tree House author Mary Pope Osborne ring true to me to this day. Traveling into a world of ink on a page can create an exciting adventure separate from the chaos of our lives. I was young when I first discovered the art of stories. I would sit in an old swivel rocking chair next to my great-grandmother. She loved to read to me. Every day I would listen intently to whatever book she had with her. It didn’t matter if it was a fictional story about caterpillars or a book about a family of bears living in a tree who taught me lessons. These stories opened my eyes, taught me, and inspired me to be creative.
Her stories stayed with me, so I began to write. I wrote stories about whatever I could imagine. After writing stories about trees that could walk and dinosaurs who lived in castles, I began to discover how to add more depth. The stories changed how I thought. The year after my great-grandmother passed, my father published his autobiography, and I realized it was possible to become a published storyteller.
One day, I was enchanted by the otherworldly stories of a galaxy far, far away when I watched all of the Star Wars movies for the first time. The way the stories all worked together and how everything was put in place for a reason fascinated me. No matter how many times I saw them, there was always something new to find. All of the pieces had a purpose. Now, my stories became not merely short tales but complex worlds. I sent my toy dinosaurs on adventures. They became characters who had stories, choices, and purpose. I called it the ‘dino-verse.’ Creating something as detailed and complex as this full world required great determination.
Determination has driven me to accomplish many things. In elementary school determination allowed me to finish several books about talking trees and a four-part story about dinosaurs. I then proceeded to write a medieval short film, an animated sitcom episode, dozens of historical nonfiction articles for the county newspaper, and a complete novel. In the future, I intend to use my determination to construct stories that will have a lasting impact on the audience.
My desire to understand the storytelling craft presents me with many goals to strive for. I plan to take it up a notch by attending a university where I will improve my storytelling skills and gain credibility in the field. I want to share inspiring stories with audiences searching for healthy family entertainment. First, I need the proper schooling and connections. Then I aim to publish my novel and other stories for people to enjoy.
This is why I write stories–just as the stories my great-grandmother read changed the way I thought about the world, I want to fabricate stories that will aid in shaping future generations. My extreme determination will be one of my greatest allies as I continue to write in the coming years. Thank you for your consideration of this scholarship. It would help spark my career and provide me with the financial stability my family of six cannot provide me at this crucial time. If you decide I am someone who should receive this scholarship, you can be assured that I will use it to beneficially shape not only my future but also the stories I weave together to inspire future generations.

I sat in a rocking chair next to my great-grandmother. She loved reading to me. Every day I listened intently to her books. It didn’t matter if it was a fictional story about caterpillars or a book about a family of bears living in a tree who taught me lessons in interesting ways. These stories opened my eyes, taught me, and inspired me to be creative.
Because her stories stayed with me, I began to write. I wrote stories about whatever I could imagine. After writing stories about trees that could walk and dinosaurs who lived in castles, I began to discover how to add more depth. The stories changed how I thought. My father published his autobiography the year after my great-grandmother passed, and I realized it was possible to become a published storyteller. I could be creative and express anything I could imagine not just the real world.

Determination has driven me to accomplish many things. In elementary school determination allowed me to finish several books about talking trees and a four-part story about dinosaurs. In the future, I intend to use my determination to construct stories that will have a lasting impact on the audience in ways they never thought imaginable.
My desire to understand the storytelling craft presents me with many goals to strive for. This is why I write stories–just as the stories my great-grandmother read changed how I thought about the world, I want to fabricate stories that will aid in shaping future generations. The future isn't shaped by those who stay in the normal box, but by those who creatively push the limits. My extreme determination will be one of my greatest allies as I continue my creative writing journey in the coming years. If you decide I am someone who should receive this scholarship, you can be assured that I will use it to beneficially shape not only my future but also the stories I creatively weave together to inspire future generations.
