I am 19 years old, and I am currently in the military. More specifically the Texas Army National Guard. Having just come back from AIT in Fort Lee just a couple of months back, I have plans of going to school this fall in pursuit of my aerospace engineering degree.     Kenyada Me'Chon Thomas Legacy Scholarship
    Abortion is the most controversial issue having no grounds of agreement among two polar aspects. The argument is life and death though the uncertainty of complication makes it difficult. I don’t support the idea of abortion as it often involves the termination of a life, and as well as it being a controversial and sensitive issue, it also raises a lot of philosophical questions. Such as “does life begin at conception” or “when does sentience really begin” “Should the law allow abortions for rape or incest?” .Abortion is a life or death matter, having equal supporters on both sides. Pro-lifers believe that a fetus is still a human being and though it doesn't have personhood or sentence yet, it will grow into having sentience, and thus terminating that is immoral, as you would be taking an innocent humans' life. Pro choicers however aren't entirely sure where life does begin but do know that sentence starts after the first trimester, and most abortions take place before the first trimester, and it is also immoral as well to force a woman to keep someone else alive, when they aren't able to. Essentially turning them into baby incubators. So in essence the choice should be ultimately up to the woman. With the perspective of both sides in mind, we should realistically have one goal in common: decreasing the number of abortions and making abortion safer. It has been noted that abortion restrictions does reduce the number of abortions. The question shouldn't be “do restrictions stop abortions?” but rather “at what cost do they stop abortions?”. The cost is that it puts the woman at risk. Studies show that if abortion is banned it could lead to a 21% increase in pregnancy related deaths, as well as the carrying out of unsafe illegal abortions, which has been shown to have a high fatality rate for women. In fact carrying a pregnancy to term has the potential to do far more damage than a safe abortion. In other words the risks outweigh the benefits when it comes to abortion bans. So if abortion bans aren't the solution then what is?. The solution isn't to ban abortions but rather to make abortions safe and drastically reduce the number of abortions. The best moves are to allow health care to be more open and affordable, and in doing so being able to provide free contraceptives across the board. It's not just contraceptives, but also providing comprehensive, scientifically accurate sexual education. This is crucial as it not only lowers the rates of abortion by teaching people on how to properly use contraceptives, but does it at a much lower cost. Unplanned pregnancies however are still a real issue. According to a 2012 brookings institute report, more than 90% abortions occur due to unintended pregnancy, and more than half of those pregnancies from the 90% results from women not using or being able to use contraception, and the other half results from irregular use of said contraceptives. So it only follows that when you lower the rate of unintended pregnancies, your lower the rates of abortion, and how to effectively use birth control can only happen if there is more emphasis of pushing better and more scientifically accurate sex ed.
