I plan to join the Army after college. Military recruiting numbers are down and I want to do my part in ensuring that this country remains strong. I am a senior attending high school in Chelmsford Massachusetts. I'm currently in my final semester. For this semester we had the option to do an internship. I applied for and was selected to work with our town police force. This has been very educational and rewarding. During my internship I have gone on patrol and seen first-hand how we can keep the public safe and serve the community. I have spent time in dispatch and relayed information to and from officers on patrol, helping to ensure the officer’s and the publics needs were met. I also attended SWAT training where they simulated a hostage situation. These experiences have strengthened my resolve to serve our country and community after college. I am interested in attending a college that has a strong ROTC program to prepare myself for the military. As of now, I'm planning to join the Army after college. I have spent time with my parents to map out my future and would potentially like to serve for 20 years. Attending college will give me the opportunity to enlist as an officer which is important to me. It will allow me to enter the military at a higher rank which will place me in a position to make a greater impact. By attending a school like Norwich University, a top military college, I will be well prepared for a career in the military. After the military I plan to continue my public service as a police officer, or in a federal law enforcement agency. I have many members of my family who have served in the military. It will be an honor to follow in their footsteps. My paternal grandfather served in the US Navy for 20 years, part of his service was as a corpsman during the Vietnam war. My maternal grandfather served in the Army Reserves also, during the Vietnam war. In addition, my uncle recently retired as a Master Sargent after serving 20 years in the Air Force. The military and public services help many people in need. Through my internship, I have seen first-hand our local police officers work with the homeless, ensure safety by enforcing the law, and build strong relationships with the members of our community. The military not only keeps our nation and interests safe and secure, their duties also include humanitarian and natural disaster relief, rescue operations, and policing volatile areas, to name a few. My future service in the military and continued public service afterwards are how I plan to make a positive and lasting impact on my country and community after college. Thank you for taking the time to review this essay and for considering me for this scholarship.
