Adversity is an inevitable part of life, and my journey has been no exception. Born into a family of first-generation African American immigrants, I grew up navigating the complexities of identity, opportunity, and resilience. From a young age, I witnessed firsthand the challenges and triumphs that come with pursuing the American Dream in the face of systemic barriers and societal expectations. One of the most significant adversities I faced was the sudden illness of my mother during my sophomore year of high school. Our lives completely changed overnight as we struggled to come to terms with the unknown nature of her diagnosis and course of treatment. I had a strong sense of duty as the oldest sibling to both financially and emotionally support my family while still fulfilling my academic obligations. My ability to be resilient, patient, and determined was put to the test in a way that I had never encountered before during this time of hardship. We had to deal with medical appointments, financial strain, and the emotional toll of uncertainty. There were times when we felt fear, doubt, and intense stress. But despite everything, I never wavered in my resolve to provide for my family and maintain my focus on my objectives. It took a combination of inner strength, family support, and a readiness to ask for assistance when needed to turn to my faith and use prayer and meditation to find comfort and direction. I also counted on the unwavering love, support, and practical help of friends, family, and community members who came together to stand by us. I could never have predicted how deeply this experience of adversity shaped me. It made me realize how crucial perspective, adaptability, and resilience are when dealing with life's obstacles. In addition, it strengthened my compassion and empathy for people going through comparable hardships and gave me a deeper sense of appreciation for the times of happiness and connection in the midst of the dark. If I could give advice to someone in a similar situation, I would tell them to cling to their support system, ask for assistance when necessary, and remain loyal to their principles and self. Asking for assistance, admitting your vulnerability, and moving day by day are all acceptable. Though it may put us to the test, adversity also has the capacity to fortify, mold, and ultimately propel us to new heights of growth and resilience. In summary, hardship has shaped me into the person I am today and has been a defining part of my journey. Even though the obstacles I had to overcome were formidable, they ultimately gave me priceless insights into fortitude, compassion, and the strength of the community. I came out of it all stronger, kinder, and more determined to change the world for the better.

My upbringing as a first-generation African American is firmly anchored in resiliency, tenacity, and the pursuit of opportunity. The journey my parents took to get to the United States from Liberia is proof of the resilience of the human spirit in the face of hardship. I grew up knowing full well the costs my parents paid in order to give my siblings and me a better life. In search of safety and stability, they left behind their homes, careers, and loved ones as they fled Liberia during the horrific civil war that ravaged the nation. I have always been inspired by their bravery and tenacity in the face of such trying circumstances. My parents put forth a lot of effort to rebuild their lives and support our family in spite of the difficulties of moving to a foreign country. They instilled in us a strong work ethic and the belief in the ability to persevere, and they highlighted the importance of education as a means of achieving success. Their unwavering commitment to building a better future for us has influenced my perspective and given me a strong sense of thankfulness and fortitude. Being a first-generation African American, I understand full well the opportunities and obligations that go along with being who I am. In addition to trying to have a positive influence on my community and beyond, I understand how important it is to respect my heritage. Because of my parents' experiences, I understand how important it is to use my voice and skills to promote justice and equality as well as to encourage those who might be going through similar struggles.I pledge to uphold my parents' resilient and tenacious legacy throughout college and beyond.I want to be a standout student, follow my passions, and make a positive impact on my community. Whether it is through advocacy, mentoring, or volunteer work, I am committed to using my platform to inspire others and build a more just and inclusive society. In the end, my parents' migration from Liberia to the US serves as a continual reminder of the strength of optimism and fortitude.

My aunt lost her battle with cancer a few years ago, leaving my family devastated. She had fought the disease for a long and brave time. For all of us, it was a difficult period that was wrought with sorrow and suffering. But even in the middle of the suffering, I saw firsthand the effectiveness of placing Jesus first, other people second, and myself third. I saw how my family came together for my aunt in the months before she passed away, offering steadfast love and support. She was comforted and cared for at every turn by them, despite their suffering. They did this without expecting anything in return.I was deeply impacted by their example of selfless love, which taught me the true meaning of putting others before oneself in the face of difficulty. I also firmly relied on my faith during this time, turning to scripture and prayer for comfort and strength. I took solace in the knowledge that my aunt's agony would soon come to an end and that she would be accepted into Jesus' tender embrace. I was able to find calm in the midst of the grief storm by putting my trust in Him and submitting to His will. Following my aunt's death, I was driven to uphold the values of placing Jesus first, others second, and myself third in order to honor her memory. My efforts to lend a sympathetic ear and a shoulder to cry on for people in need became more deliberate. I helped out at neighborhood cancer support groups, offering patients and their families who were going through similar things consolation and support. I swear going forward to uphold my aunt's loving and compassionate legacy. I will strive to live a life of service and selflessness, putting the needs of others above my own whenever possible. By following the example set by my family and drawing strength from my faith, I am confident that I can make a meaningful difference in the lives of those around me, even in the midst of sorrow and loss.
