In 2011, my life changed forever when my mother was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. I was young, full of dreams, and ready to pursue a future that I had worked so hard for. But that diagnosis brought everything to a halt. Watching someone you love fight for their life is an experience that leaves an imprint on your soul one that humbles you, matures you, and reshapes your entire perspective on life. My mother was the foundation of our family. She was the one who always made sure everything was in place emotionally, spiritually, and physically. But cancer doesn't care about stability. It stripped her of energy, her hair, her appetite, and her strength, yet somehow never her faith. Still, as I watched her health decline, I felt helpless. There were moments I wanted to scream, moments I did, and times I couldn’t find the strength to cry. The role of daughter shifted to caregiver, and the emotional weight was something I never imagined bearing so young. I had dreams big ones. A career path that required time, travel, and mental clarity. But nothing seemed more important than being by her side. I made the choice to put those dreams on hold, a decision that came with its own emotional battle. There was guilt for not pursuing what I had worked toward, but an even deeper sense of guilt imagining not being there for her in the moments she needed me most. Mentally, I struggled. I battled depression, anxiety, and emotional fatigue. Each hospital visit, each sleepless night, and every “what if” conversation took a toll on me. At times, I questioned everything my faith, my purpose, even my strength. But in the middle of that storm, I also learned some of the most valuable lessons of my life. I learned what unconditional love truly looks like. I learned the importance of showing up for people not just when it's convenient, but especially when it's not. I learned the value of time, how precious and fleeting it is, and how quickly things can change. Most importantly, I learned that strength isn't always loud. Sometimes, it’s silent. It’s wiping tears quietly in the bathroom so you can come out with a smile. It’s holding someone’s hand when they’re too tired to speak. It’s staying even when your heart feels like it's breaking.
Today, although I am still navigating life and healing from the emotional wounds that cancer left behind, I carry my mother’s strength with me. Her fight taught me resilience. Her pain taught me empathy. And her journey continues to remind me why I must keep going, even when it’s hard.
This experience has fueled a deeper passion in me not just for success, but for purpose. I now pursue my goals not just for myself, but for her, and for all the people who’ve had to watch someone they love fight for their life. I am more determined, more grounded, and more focused than ever. Returning to school to pursue a degree in Educational Administration is more than just a career move for me it’s the next step in fulfilling a purpose that has been growing inside me for years. My long-term dream is to open and operate my own school. A school that doesn’t just meet state standards but exceeds them by cultivating a space that truly supports, uplifts, and inspires underserved youth, especially Black and Brown children who often feel unseen or misunderstood within traditional educational systems. Cancer tried to break my family, but instead, it showed me just how unbreakable love can be.
William A. Lewis Scholarship
One of the significant obstacles I faced in pursuing higher education was the financial burden. Growing up in a community where resources were limited, the cost of attending college seemed like an insurmountable challenge. My family, while supportive, was not in a position to provide the financial support I needed, and I wasn’t sure how I would manage the expenses of tuition, books, and living costs. The turning point came when I was able to connect with mentors who helped me navigate the complex world of scholarships, financial aid, and loans. One of the most impactful individuals in overcoming this obstacle was my high school guidance counselor. She went above and beyond to help me research and apply for various scholarships and grants that I otherwise might not have known about. Her guidance didn’t just stop at the application process; she helped me develop a financial plan, and her constant encouragement made me feel empowered to pursue my dreams despite the financial limitations. Additionally, my experience at Virginia State University was transformative, not just because of the education but because of the support network I found within the university. Faculty and staff members were always there to offer advice, scholarships, and, most importantly, their time. They understood the challenges that many students from underprivileged backgrounds faced, and they provided the resources to help me succeed. Ultimately, it was the combination of my own determination and the unwavering support from mentors, like my high school counselor and the faculty at VSU, that helped me overcome this financial barrier. This experience taught me the power of mentorship and the importance of creating support systems for students who face similar challenges. It also reinforced my passion for helping others, particularly young people, navigate their own obstacles to higher education. As I continue to work in education and develop initiatives like K2K College Prep Services, I am driven by the desire to pay it forward. I recognize how important it is to provide students with the tools, resources, and guidance they need to succeed. Much like my counselors and mentors did for me, I want to help students break through the barriers that stand between them and their dreams. For many, it’s not a lack of ability but a lack of access that holds them back. My experience has shaped my belief that every student deserves an opportunity to pursue higher education, regardless of their background or financial situation.
Moving forward, I am committed to advocating for students who face similar challenges. Through scholarship programs, mentorship, and college preparation initiatives, I strive to give them the same support I received. In the end, it’s about creating a ripple effect, where students not only overcome their obstacles but are empowered to give back and help others do the same. My journey has shown me the transformative power of education, and I want to ensure that every student, no matter their circumstances, has a chance to experience that transformation.
SCFU Scholarship for HBCU Business Students
K2K College Prep Services and the HBCU College Tour are initiatives that embody my deep commitment to supporting underrepresented communities, particularly when it comes to higher education. Through K2K College Prep, I work directly with students to help them navigate the college application process, develop strong applications, and understand the value of pursuing a higher education. One of the most profound challenges I have witnessed is the lack of access to resources that many students, especially those from marginalized communities, face when trying to reach their academic and career goals. The HBCU College Tour, a vital part of this initiative, is designed to expose students to historically Black colleges and universities, where they can see themselves reflected in the academic and social environment, as well as experience the rich cultural history of these institutions. The lack of resources in underrepresented communities whether it's financial support, academic guidance, or exposure to opportunities can create barriers that prevent students from realizing their potential. Through K2K and the HBCU tour, I aim to address these disparities by providing the necessary tools and experiences that allow students to thrive, regardless of their background.
Economic empowerment and business innovation play a significant role in uplifting these communities. By creating businesses and initiatives that directly address these disparities whether through mentorship, scholarships, or career development programs we can create pathways to long-term success. My career goals in business, particularly in owning multiple franchises, are deeply aligned with my commitment to social equity and justice. I believe that economic empowerment begins with creating opportunities within communities that have historically been underserved. Through innovative business models that prioritize community investment, job creation, and educational access, we can spark systemic change that lasts. As a business owner/entreprenuer, I am dedicated to ensuring that my success doesn’t just benefit me but creates a ripple effect that uplifts those around me. By reinvesting in the communities that need it most, I can help create lasting change. Whether it’s through sponsoring educational programs, supporting local initiatives, or providing employment opportunities, I see my business ventures as a means to an end empowering individuals to break the cycle of poverty, achieve financial independence, and access opportunities they may have previously thought out of reach. Ultimately, my vision is to create a world where every student, regardless of their background, has access to the resources they need to succeed. Through my work with K2K College Prep and the HBCU College Tour, along with my future business ventures, I hope to play a part in breaking down the barriers to education and economic success, empowering future generations to create their own paths to greatness.

Living the life of my dreams would be a harmonious blend of personal fulfillment, professional success, and making a meaningful impact on the world. It would begin with a deep connection to my purpose helping others, especially young people, realize their full potential. As I work toward building my own school where students are not only surviving but thriving, I would create an environment that aligns with my values and provides both financial stability and emotional and spiritual fulfillment. Operating and leading my own school would represent the culmination of my career ambitions. It would be a place where I could truly influence the future by cultivating an environment that prioritizes student growth, inclusion, and innovation. My school would focus on holistic development. balancing academic achievement with emotional intelligence, leadership skills, and real-world preparedness. The core vision for my school would center around empowerment. I would design a curriculum tailored to each student’s unique strengths, interests, and learning styles, ensuring every child feels seen, heard, and capable of reaching their fullest potential. Additionally, I would offer a variety of programs that extend beyond traditional academics such as mentorship, career readiness, and personal development to equip students with the tools they need to succeed in every aspect of life. Leading my own school would also mean being directly involved with the students. I would make it a priority to get to know each student on a personal level, understanding their dreams, struggles, and strengths. My leadership would be rooted in active listening, empathy, and a constant focus on ensuring that the school is a place where all students are seen, heard, and supported. In building strong partnerships with families and the community, I would ensure that the school is a collaborative space where all stakeholders are invested in the students’ success. The school would be a hub for growth not just academically but also socially, emotionally, and professionally creating a well rounded experience for every student. Ultimately, the school I envision would be a place where students not only learn but grow into confident, compassionate leaders ready to take on the challenges of the world. It would be a space where their individual potential is nurtured, their voices are valued, and their futures are bright with possibility. In leading this school, I would not only be shaping minds but also inspiring hearts fostering a community where every student feels empowered to create their own path and make a positive impact. By guiding these future leaders, I believe I can contribute to a world that is more inclusive, compassionate, and driven by purpose.
RonranGlee Special Needs Teacher Literary Scholarship
As a former special education teacher at a high school in an inner-city district, I witnessed firsthand the immense challenges and rewards of working with students who faced unique learning needs. My passion for the profession grew from the understanding that every student, regardless of their abilities, deserves to feel valued and empowered in their educational journey. Special education is not just about providing academic support; it’s about fostering a sense of identity, independence, and self-worth in students who may have faced adversity, both in and outside the classroom.
The quote from Professor Harold Bloom, “The purpose of teaching is to bring the student to his or her sense of his or her own presence,” speaks to the transformative power of education. In the context of special education, this statement reflects the idea that teaching is not only about imparting knowledge but about helping students recognize their unique value and potential. It’s about empowering them to understand who they are and how they can contribute to the world around them.
To guide my special education students in experiencing a sense of their own presence, my mission would be to create an environment where they feel seen, heard, and respected. This would involve several key strategies:
Personalized Learning: Each student’s learning journey is unique, and as a special education teacher, my role would be to tailor lessons to meet their specific needs, interests, and abilities. By providing individualized support, I would help students feel confident in their strengths and encouraged to overcome their challenges.
Fostering Self-Advocacy: Empowering students to advocate for themselves is crucial in building their sense of presence. I would teach my students how to communicate their needs, preferences, and concerns, allowing them to take ownership of their learning and their experiences. This would instill in them a sense of autonomy and self-worth.
Celebrating Progress, Not Perfection: It’s easy for students with special needs to feel overlooked or discouraged when they don’t meet the same milestones as their peers. My mission would be to celebrate every step of progress, no matter how small. By highlighting their growth and resilience, students would gain a sense of pride in their achievements, reinforcing the idea that their presence in the classroom is valuable and meaningful.
Building Emotional Connections: Teaching students with special needs goes beyond academics. Building trust and emotional connections with students is essential for helping them feel comfortable in their own skin. When students know they are supported and cared for, they are more likely to believe in their own worth and capabilities.
Creating a Safe and Inclusive Environment: The classroom must be a safe space where every student feels like they belong. I would foster a culture of acceptance, where differences are celebrated and each student’s individuality is respected. This sense of belonging would be integral to helping students develop a strong sense of presence in their educational journey.
In summary, my mission as a special education teacher would be to guide students toward discovering their own sense of presence by providing personalized support, fostering self-advocacy, celebrating progress, building emotional connections, and creating a safe and inclusive learning environment. I believe that through these strategies, students can develop a deeper understanding of their identity, capabilities, and worth, allowing them to thrive both academically and personally.
