Growing up, I always felt different from my peers because of something I couldn’t fully understand: my epilepsy. I didn’t know why my body sometimes took over, causing me to seize and black out. As a child, I felt scared and confused during these episodes. I would often overhear whispers or see worried faces when people realized I was having a seizure. It was tough when classmates made fun of me, thinking I was faking or pretending. This hurt deeply because I couldn't control what was happening to me. I wished more than anything to fit in, but I felt like I was living in a world that didn’t understand me.
As I grew older, I learned more about my condition and what to expect, yet the feelings of fear and confusion remained. The first time I had to go for an MRI scan, I was terrified. The machine was loud and closed in, and I felt trapped. I didn't understand what was happening and what they were looking for. Over time, as I underwent more of these tests, I became accustomed to the process. I went from being scared of MRI machines to closing my eyes and falling asleep during the scans. This change showed me that, with time, I could learn to manage the fear that epilepsy brought into my life.
Another challenging experience was when I had to wear an EEG machine. It looked strange, with wires sticking out of my head like an alien. I often felt embarrassed and different. However, I later learned how important the technology was to help my doctors understand my brain better and monitor my condition. Embracing this technology became part of accepting my epilepsy. It allowed me to live a better life without having intrusive seizures.
There were also the tough conversations with my doctor. I would sit in the office while the doctor completed forms for the state, stating that I was safe to drive, provided I was taking my medication regularly. These meetings filled me with worry. What if my condition wasn’t stable? What if I had a seizure while driving? These concerns weighed heavily on my mind, especially when I began to think about my future and becoming a parent.
As I became a mother, new fears crept into my life. I was terrified of my children witnessing a seizure. I worried about how they would react, what they would think, and if they would be scared. The thought of them experiencing the same struggles I faced was overwhelming. I wanted to protect them from every worry and fear I had gone through. It broke my heart to imagine them feeling different or being made fun of, just as I had been.
The reality of having epilepsy reached deeper than I ever expected as I navigated parenthood. I became motivated to become informed and educated about the disorder. I wanted to ensure I could support myself and my children through this. My determination to be a good parent while managing my condition inspired me to be as proactive as possible.
Today, I strive to understand more about epilepsy by consulting with doctors, researching, and connecting with others who face the same challenges. Instead of hiding my condition, I share my story and educate those around me. Though my journey has had its bumps, I have gradually moved from fear and confusion to empowerment. Living with epilepsy may always carry some apprehension, but I am learning to embrace the support, technology, and understanding that help me lead a fulfilling life.
Through my experiences, I strive to show my children that no matter what challenges life brings, it’s important to face them head-on. Together, we can create a safe space for one another, tackle our fears, and treasure the unique journey we share. While I may carry the label of having epilepsy, I am also so much more than that. I am a mother, a fighter, and an advocate for understanding and support.
Susie Green Scholarship for Women Pursuing Education
Going back to school as a single mother was not an easy decision, but it was one that filled me with hope and determination. The courage to take this step came from my desire to be a role model for my children. I wanted to show them that education is a powerful tool, one that can open doors and create opportunities for a better future. Each day, I think about the lessons I want to impart to my kids: perseverance, hard work, and the importance of following one's dreams.
The journey of raising my children, one who has special needs, has taught me countless lessons about patience and resilience. I often see the struggles my children face and how important it is for them to have strong advocates and support in their life. These experiences made me realize that I want to be that advocate, not just for my own children, but for all children who may not have the resources or support they deserve. By pursuing my education, I hope to gain the knowledge and skills necessary to help others in similar situations.
Before returning to school, I faced many fears and doubts. I worried about my ability to manage my time effectively, balancing classes, homework, and parenting. I thought about what it would take to find childcare and how I would support my family financially. Each concern pushed me to think about my children. I imagined their faces and how proud they would be to see me working hard to achieve my goals. This vision gave me the strength I needed to overcome my fears.
One of the biggest motivations for my return to school was understanding the importance of education in advocating for my child with special needs. I wanted to learn more about his rights, the resources available, and how I could help him thrive. I realized that by equipping myself with the knowledge I gained through education, I could make a real difference in his life and the lives of many others. I want to be someone parents can turn to for guidance and support, someone who could inspire hope in the face of challenges.
The process of going back to school has not been without its struggles. I faced critics who doubted my ability to balance everything. There are days filled with exhaustion, and moments when I questioned whether it was all worth it. When I am thinking this way, I reminded myself of why I started this journey in the first place and the importance of my goals. With each class I attended and each assignment I completed, I felt closer to creating the life I envisioned for my children. Through my studies, I’ve connected with other single parents and individuals who understand the unique challenges we face. Having a support system has been vital. Sharing stories and experiences with others has provided encouragement and strength. I realized that I am not alone, and there are many who strive for similar dreams.
In the end, my courage to go back to school is rooted in love for my children and for those who may not have a voice. I want my children to see that education is more than just books and grades; it’s about empowerment and change. I hope they will carry this message forward, understanding that they can also be advocates and leaders in their communities. With every lesson learned, I am reminded that I am not just pursuing my dreams—I am paving the way for my children and others to follow.

Being a student and a single parent is both rewarding and very challenging. One of the most difficult parts is finding enough time for everything. My days are filled with taking care of my children, helping with homework, and managing daily tasks. When I add studying, attending classes, and completing assignments, it can feel overwhelming. Juggling these responsibilities often means late nights or sacrificing time I would usually spend with my children.
Another challenge is maintaining my energy and focus. After a long day of working in special education and parenting, sometimes I struggle to stay awake and study. The weariness of caring for a child can drain my mental strength, making it tough to stay concentrated during late-night study sessions. This battle for attention and focus not only affects my performance as a student but also weighs heavily on my self-esteem. I want to make sure I excel in my studies, not just for myself, but to also serve as a strong role model for my children. I want them to see the value of education and hard work, but sometimes the challenges I face can make it hard to show that example effectively. It can be hard to find the motivation to do my studies when I am tired. I worry about not doing well in my classes while also wanting to set a good example for my children by showing how important education is.
This scholarship would make a big difference in my life. With financial support, I could feel less stressed paying for college and be able to focus on my education. I could also use the funds to buy books, a computer, or other materials that will help me learn better. Having access to resources such as textbooks, technology, and learning materials would significantly enhance my academic performance. The scholarship would provide a crucial steppingstone for me to acquire the tools I need to succeed in my coursework. It would allow me to build skills and knowledge that will prepare me for future job opportunities, ultimately leading to stability for both myself and my child.
Receiving this scholarship would ease some of the stress that comes from financial worries. When I can concentrate on my studies without the constant weight of money troubles, I can perform better in school and earn my degree. This would create a brighter future not just for me but also for my children. I want to show them that hard work and determination can lead to success, and I believe this scholarship will help me achieve that goal.
This scholarship represents hope. It symbolizes a chance to break the cycle of struggle and demonstrate that dedication and resilience can lead to a successful future. With the support of this scholarship, I would not only be paving the way for my own success but also laying a foundation for my children's futures. Poynter Scholarship
As a single parent, balancing my education and my commitment to my family is a challenging but rewarding task. My two children are my top priority, especially my child with special needs, who requires extra care and attention. However, I also know that earning my degree is very important for our future. Here’s how I plan to balance these responsibilities and how a scholarship can help me reach my goals.
First, I believe that careful planning is key. I keep a detailed schedule that outlines my classes, study times, and family activities. This way, I can ensure that I am fully present for my children while also dedicating time to my studies. I often set specific blocks of time for studying when my children are occupied, such as during their nap times or at school. This allows me to focus on my assignments without distractions.
Second, I involve my children in my educational journey. I talk to them about what I am learning and encourage them to be curious. For example, when I have a project, I might share what I’m doing with them. This helps them feel included and shows them the importance of education. It also paves the way for them to understand that hard work can lead to a brighter future.
Support is also crucial. I reach out to friends and family members who can help watch my children during particularly busy times, like exam periods. This network of support allows me to study when I need to without worrying about my children. Additionally, I try to connect with other single parents or student parents. We can share tips and offer each other encouragement, making the journey a bit easier.
Receiving a scholarship would significantly help me on this path. With financial support, I can reduce the burden of tuition fees and other costs of education. This would allow me to spend less time worrying about finances and more time focusing on my studies and my children. For instance, I could invest in necessary materials like textbooks or a reliable computer, which would enhance my learning experience.
In conclusion, balancing education and family life as a single parent requires careful planning, support, and involvement. A scholarship would provide me with the financial help I need, allowing me to dedicate more energy to earning my degree. By doing so, I hope to create a better life for my children and inspire them with the importance of education and hard work. My goal is to provide my children with a brighter future while making a meaningful impact in the world around us.

Mrs. Hicks was a remarkable figure in my life—a beacon of kindness and understanding during a time when I needed it most. As a third-grade teacher, she not only provided knowledge and education but also created a nurturing environment where students felt safe and encouraged to express themselves. Her genuine interest in helping each child learn and grow had a profound impact on me, ultimately inspiring my desire to become a teacher.
As a child, I faced experiences that left me with a sense of distrust towards adults. Childhood trauma can cast shadows on relationships, making it hard for a young mind to feel safe and secure. I often found myself hesitant to open up or connect with those in authority, fearing that my vulnerabilities would be met with indifference or misunderstanding. However, Mrs. Hicks was different. From the moment I stepped into her classroom, I sensed her warmth and compassion. She had a unique ability to make each student feel valued, and her classroom became a sanctuary for many of us who had faced difficulties outside of school.
Mrs. Hicks understood that learning goes beyond textbooks and worksheets. She took the time to know her students as individuals, asking about our interests and passions. Her gentle encouragement pushed me to believe in my capabilities, even when I struggled. What stood out most to me was her ability to listen. I remember days when I would sit at her desk after class, sharing my worries or simply talking about my favorite books. She would give her undivided attention, offering advice and support without judgment. This was the first time I felt truly seen by an adult, and it opened my heart to the possibility of trusting others.
The relationship I built with Mrs. Hicks became a pivotal moment in my life—a turning point that led me to understand the vital role teachers play in nurturing young minds. Her kindness made me want to emulate her example. I watched as she celebrated our successes, no matter how small, and offered constructive feedback in times of struggle. It was her unwavering belief in our potential that ignited a fire within me to support others in their development. I realized that being a teacher was more than a profession; it was a calling to create the same safe spaces for children that Mrs. Hicks had offered me.
As I pursue my dream of becoming an educator, I aim to embody the qualities that made Mrs. Hicks special. I want to be the teacher who cultivates a trusting environment where students feel comfortable to explore and learn. I want to provide the support and encouragement necessary for each child to navigate their challenges, just as Mrs. Hicks did for me. I believe that education is not solely about academic achievement; it is also about helping children discover their worth, resilience, and talents. This holistic approach is what I learned from her.
In my future classroom, I hope to create not only a space for learning but also a community where every child feels loved and supported. I aspire to be another Mrs. Hicks—a trusted adult who can help guide children through their journeys of growth, inspiring them to overcome their own challenges just as she inspired me. Her legacy lives on through my commitment to fostering a nurturing environment that prioritizes kindness, understanding, and genuine support for all students. By doing so, I honor the impact she had on my life and continue the cycle of trust and inspiration that she so beautifully embodied.
