I take an interest in books that have a moral message that can be applied to my life. Books have served as an outlet for me through hard times. Not only does reading give me an outlet, but it gives me knowledge that I sometimes can't get from school. I have always struggled with identity as I didn’t grow up with a lot of brown people around me. One of my favorite books is The Help. The book is about black maids who help a young white lady, Skeeter, write a book about the drama and racism in Mississippi. This book focuses on the maids and their everyday struggles to have their voices heard. This book has inspired me to become the first black female attorney with a practice in every state. It also prompted me to start my confidence foundation to help children learn how to take care of their mental health and develop the inner confidence they need to perform professionally. Growing up, I didn't have the courage to give someone a handshake and look them in the eye while speaking to them. I think that ethics are imperative in my generation, as respect, manners, and professionalism have been lost in some ways. Not only did I not have confidence, but I was out of touch with my roots and the reason behind my motivation. I want my confidence foundation to be a safe community for minorities who may be just as lost as I was. The essential message displayed in The Help pushed me to obtain all the knowledge that I possibly could. I want to achieve the highest level of education because I know the opportunity to be educated was not offered to many of my ancestors. Just as poet and rapper Lauryn Hill said, “How you gonna win when you ain't right within.” I have learned that I can do anything that I put my mind to as long as I have the right intentions and mindset to do so. Through the trials and tribulations displayed in the book, the maids forged a way with little to no help. Even if the financial requirements for achieving my goal are not satisfied, I will continue to make every effort to achieve my dream. I put in effort every day, knowing that it might not be successful, but I have to know at the end of each day that I gave it my all. I will always continue to push for a better life for my family and myself. The Help has helped me form my understanding of all of the opportunities that I have to excel and give back to my community. Being proactive and using my voice to make a positive change in my community is at the forefront of why I want to excel, knowing that my ancestors would be proud.
