I currently serve as the flute section leader in my school's marching band. As a section leader, I positively influenced my peers and made meaningful contributions to the band. I was responsible for preparing my section for our fall season competition. It was not easy to teach people who had never marched before how to march. As the competition grew closer, my freshmen could not catch up with the rest of the band. Despite this setback, I did not give up on them. I worked with them little by little and had them follow a more comfortable learning pace. Even if their peers in other sections were farther ahead, I took time to go back to the basics and teach them fundamental marching and playing skills. I worked my freshman up to more advanced skills gradually so that they could master the basic skills without the pressure of keeping up with other sections.
I positively influenced my freshmen because I gave them time to learn and set a lesson plan that allowed them to follow their own pace and learn effectively. Marching band is a high-pressure environment. Our instructors say that we are only as good as our weakest members. Younger members quit because they cannot endure the pressure of being compared to other sections. Instead of putting more pressure on my section members, I gave them my patience and trust. My members now have experience learning a new skill and learning well despite external pressures. My freshmen are enjoying marching band more and have the confidence to continue performing for the next three years. I believe the learning process I passed down to my members will allow them to help other underclassmen in the future. I am confident that my efforts this year gave my section a blueprint to continue performing well for years to come.
During the concert season, I, as the flute section leader, still have many more responsibilities. Include maintaining clear and direct communication with other sections and leadership, ensuring any necessary information is passed down clearly. Making sure that my members are clear on any schedules, notifications, and updated information. I am also responsible for any money payments, ensuring all fees are submitted on time with no missing money. In addition, I am responsible for hosting sectional and creating structured group practice to improve overall performance. During the sight-reading process, I was responsible for passing out the music, distributing each part evenly, and highlighting the key element to pay attention to. Including key signature, time signature, repeat sigh, confusing rhyme, etc.
At the leadership level, I served as quartermaster in this band for 2 years, this is a position where I handled all the needs for the uniform. We are a military band, so unison is a keyword. When we do a performance, appearance is the first thing that people judge. So I need to make sure that everyone looks exactly the same, no one is standing out. Issues like a rip, a missing button, and missing stuff on the uniform are all under the quartermaster's responsibility. That means I need to be responsible for over hundreds of people. That is my role, to support hundreds of people in this band.
