As an assistant teacher at Olivet Science Academy, I taught mathematics, physics, and statistics to more than forty students from resource-limited backgrounds. Some lacked textbooks, computers, or extra academic support. I worked to make difficult concepts more approachable, remind them that their backgrounds did not define where they would end up in life, and help students trust their ability to solve problems. By the end of the year, my class achieved a 100% pass rate on the national exam. Many of those students are now in college. That experience showed me that a student’s circumstances should not determine how far they can go in STEM. I now study mathematics and finance with a concentration in actuarial science at the College of St. Scholastica. Actuaries use mathematics, statistics, and financial models to understand uncertainty and help organizations provide protection people can rely on. I chose this field because I want families facing illness or disability to have a stronger financial safety net than mine did. My college does not offer a standalone actuarial science program, so I have had to build much of my path through independent study and mentorship. I have passed four Society of Actuaries exams and completed internships at Reinsurance Group of America and Corebridge Financial, where I worked on disability insurance pricing and life insurance analysis. Each step has strengthened my belief that careful technical decisions matter to real people: the worker who needs income while recovering from illness, or the family counting on an insurer to keep its promise. I also know that Black students may never consider actuarial science if they do not see people like themselves in the profession or have someone explain how to enter it. I helped found my college’s actuarial society to make that path more visible to other students. I also served as a volunteer judge for the Actuarial Foundation’s 2025 Modeling the Future Challenge, where I reviewed high school students’ risk-modeling projects and offered feedback on their ideas. Those opportunities let me share both technical knowledge and the encouragement that helped me persist. I am the first in my family of eight to attend college, and financing my education remains difficult.
