Seeing Disease Before Vision Is Lost One problem in healthcare that I refuse to accept as inevitable is a patient losing vision from an eye disease that could have been detected or treated earlier. Vision loss can change a person's ability to drive, work, read, recognize faces, and live independently. I want to become an optometrist because I believe preserving vision is not only about helping someone see better. It is about protecting a part of the life they already have. My interest in this problem began with my own eyesight. I have dealt with poor vision for most of my life and understand how much I depend on eye care to function normally. However, working summers as an ophthalmic technician at Family Vision Clinic in Rock Springs, Wyoming, showed me a much more serious side of vision care. I have seen patients who are not simply choosing between glasses or contact lenses. They are being monitored for conditions that can permanently affect their sight. Those experiences made me want to understand what happens before vision is lost and what we can do to prevent or slow it. As a Biology major and Chemistry minor at Concordia University Nebraska, I began exploring that question more deeply through science. In a Cell and Molecular Biology course, I researched Syfovre, a treatment that slows the progression of geographic atrophy associated with dry age-related macular degeneration. I became fascinated by the idea that understanding disease at the cellular level could lead to a treatment that preserves vision that might otherwise be lost. It also made me realize that new treatments are only part of the solution. We need to identify disease early enough for patients to benefit from available care. That is the change I hope to help create as an optometrist. I want to use advancing diagnostic technology to recognize subtle changes before patients notice significant vision loss. I also want to improve something much less technological: patient education. A sophisticated scan cannot help someone who never comes in for an exam or doesn't understand why follow-up care matters. Growing up in Wyoming has made this especially important to me. People in smaller and rural communities may have fewer healthcare options and may need to travel significant distances for specialized care. I want to practice in a community where I can build long-term relationships with patients, educate them about their risks, and coordinate specialty care when needed. I do not expect to personally invent every treatment my future patients will need. My role may instead be to recognize disease sooner, explain it in a way a patient understands, connect that person with the right treatment, and support research and technologies that give patients better options. My education is teaching me that vision loss is an incredibly complex problem. My clinical experience is teaching me what that problem means to an individual person.

The impact I want to make is simple to describe but will take years of education and dedication to achieve: I want to help people see better and, through better vision, live fuller, more independent lives. My goal is to become an optometrist and serve a community where I can build relationships with patients, provide excellent eye care, and eventually create opportunities for others. My interest in optometry is personal because I have dealt with poor vision for most of my life. I understand how much eyesight affects learning, athletics, driving, work, and independence. As my interest in science grew, I realized optometry could combine several things important to me: science, healthcare, technology, problem-solving, and helping people. I am currently pursuing a Biology degree with a minor in Chemistry at Concordia University Nebraska while competing in cross-country and track. My education is providing the scientific foundation I will need for optometry school. In a Cell and Molecular Biology course, I researched Syfovre, a treatment designed to slow the progression of geographic atrophy associated with dry age-related macular degeneration. Learning how scientific discoveries can help preserve someone's remaining vision strengthened my commitment to eye care. During the summers, I work as an ophthalmic technician at Family Vision Clinic in my hometown of Rock Springs, Wyoming. Working directly with patients has confirmed that healthcare is where I belong. I especially enjoy working with older adults and veterans. Many share stories about their lives while I prepare them for their examinations. Those conversations have taught me that excellent healthcare requires more than technical knowledge. Patients also need someone who listens, communicates, and treats them with dignity. My family has shaped that outlook. I was raised to value education, faith, hard work, and service. My grandmother was especially influential when I was young and helped establish values that continue to guide my life. She taught me that accomplishments have greater meaning when we use our abilities to benefit others. Athletics has reinforced that lesson. As a collegiate distance runner, I may train 65 to 70 miles per week. Running has taught me discipline, resilience, and leadership. During my junior year of high school, I qualified for a 4x400 relay at the state track meet. Because I had already qualified in other events, I gave my position to a senior teammate who otherwise would not have experienced the state meet during his final season. That experience taught me that sometimes the best use of an opportunity is helping someone else succeed. That is how I hope to use my education. I want to provide preventative eye care, detect disease early, educate patients, and help people maintain the vision necessary to live independently. Growing up in Wyoming has also made me appreciate the importance of healthcare professionals serving smaller communities where access to care may be limited. I do not want my education to result only in a degree hanging on my wall. I want it to give me the knowledge and ability to improve lives. If I can preserve someone's sight, help an older patient maintain independence, or encourage a young person to pursue a career in healthcare, my education will have accomplished something greater than personal success. The people who have inspired me taught me that success creates both an opportunity and a responsibility to help others. That is the future I am working toward: becoming an optometrist, serving my community, and using the opportunities I have received to create opportunities for others.

Faith has been the foundation of my life for as long as I can remember. I was raised in a Christian home where trusting God, serving others, and living with integrity were part of everyday life. My family has always encouraged me to put my faith into action, not just through words but through the way I treat others. My uncle is a pastor, and growing up in church gave me examples of people who lived with compassion, humility, and a desire to serve. I also had the opportunity to play the drums on my church's worship team, which taught me that everyone has gifts they can use to serve something greater than themselves. Today, I attend Concordia University Nebraska, a private Christian university where my faith continues to grow. Prayer is part of daily life on campus, from classrooms to athletic practices, and I have learned that faith is something to carry into every aspect of life. As a collegiate cross country and track athlete, there are many days when training is physically and mentally demanding. During difficult workouts, races, and even setbacks like injuries, my faith has reminded me to persevere, trust God's plan, and continue giving my best effort. The same has been true in the classroom, where balancing challenging science courses with athletics requires discipline, perseverance, and confidence that God is guiding my path. My faith has also shaped my career goal of becoming an optometrist. Having dealt with poor vision for most of my life, I understand how much healthcare can improve someone's quality of life. I believe God has called me to use my abilities to serve others through compassionate, patient-centered care. Working as an optometric technician has shown me that every patient deserves to be treated with dignity, kindness, and respect, regardless of their background or circumstances. As I continue my education and eventually enter the healthcare profession, I believe my faith will help me remain grounded in honesty, humility, and service. Technical knowledge is essential for providing excellent care, but character is equally important. I want patients to remember not only that I helped improve their vision, but also that I listened, cared, and treated them with compassion. My goal is to build a career that reflects my faith through integrity, excellence, and a genuine commitment to helping others. I believe that honoring God in my work means serving every patient with the same care and respect that I would hope to receive myself.

My long-term goal is to become an optometrist who provides high-quality, patient-centered eye care in a community similar to the one where I grew up. Having lived with poor vision most of my life, I understand how much eyesight affects learning, work, athletics, safety, and overall quality of life. My goal is not only to help patients see better, but also to educate them about preventative eye care and the importance of protecting their vision throughout life. Like Joe Gilroy's motto, "Plan Your Work, Work Your Plan," I believe success comes from setting clear goals and consistently following through on them. My plan began while I was still in high school. I earned 27 college credits through Western Wyoming Community College while maintaining a 4.25 GPA. Those early credits allowed me to reduce both the time and cost of earning my undergraduate degree. Today, I attend Concordia University Nebraska, where I am majoring in Biology with a minor in Chemistry while competing in cross-country and track. I expect to graduate early after the fall semester of 2027, saving another semester of tuition while allowing me to begin optometry school sooner. Gaining practical experience has been another important part of my plan. During the summers, I work as an optometric technician at Family Vision Clinic in Wyoming. This experience has confirmed that optometry is the right profession for me and has helped me develop communication, patient care, and clinical skills before entering professional school. It has also shown me the importance of treating every patient with compassion and respect. Financial planning has been just as important as academic planning. I understand that optometry school tuition alone may exceed $50,000 per year, not to mention housing, books, equipment, and living expenses. To prepare, I work each summer, maintain a budget, contribute monthly to a Roth IRA, and make payments on my current federal student loan with the goal of paying it off before beginning optometry school. Every scholarship I receive reduces future borrowing and allows me to focus more fully on my education. My timeline is clear. I will continue building my academic foundation and clinical experience while completing my undergraduate degree. After graduation, I plan to attend optometry school, earn my Doctor of Optometry degree, and eventually practice in a community where access to quality eye care is essential. Over time, I hope to mentor future students and contribute to my profession through patient education and community outreach. I have learned that accomplishing significant goals requires more than ambition—it requires preparation, discipline, and persistence. Every class I take, every mile I run, every patient I help, and every financial decision I make is part of a larger plan. By planning my work and working my plan each day, I am steadily building the future I hope to achieve.

My inspiration to pursue a career in medicine comes from both personal experience and a desire to improve the lives of others. I have dealt with poor vision for most of my life, which made me realize early on how important healthcare can be in everyday activities. Whether it is learning in school, driving safely, competing in sports, or simply feeling confident, vision affects nearly every part of life. Because of this, I developed a strong interest in optometry and the science behind helping people protect and improve their eyesight. As a student-athlete competing in cross-country and track, I have experienced firsthand how vision affects performance and safety. Running with glasses can be difficult, especially during intense training, while contact lenses require constant care and protection from environmental conditions. These challenges may seem small, but they helped me better understand how healthcare providers can make a meaningful difference in someone’s daily life. Over time, my personal experiences motivated me to pursue a career where I could help others overcome similar challenges. My interest in healthcare grew even stronger after working as an optometric technician at Family Vision Clinic during the summers. Through this experience, I have interacted with patients and observed the direct impact of proper vision care. One of the most rewarding parts of the job is seeing patients realize how much clearer and easier life becomes after receiving the right treatment or prescription. Those moments showed me that healthcare is not just about treating conditions—it is about improving quality of life and helping people maintain independence and confidence. In addition to my clinical experience, my education has strengthened my interest in healthcare and science. Recently, I completed a cellular microbiology course where I researched Syfovre, a treatment used to slow the progression of dry macular degeneration. Learning about the biological mechanisms behind the drug showed me how scientific research and medical innovation can directly improve patient outcomes. It reinforced my desire to continue learning and eventually contribute to the healthcare field myself. In the future, I plan to attend optometry school and become a practicing optometrist. I hope to make a difference by providing accessible, compassionate care, especially in communities where specialized healthcare may be limited. I also want to focus on preventative care and patient education because many serious eye conditions can be treated more effectively when detected early. By helping patients understand the importance of regular eye exams and eye health, I hope to improve long-term wellness and quality of life. Ultimately, I want my career in healthcare to be centered around service, compassion, and improving lives. My personal experiences, education, and hands-on work in a clinical setting have all confirmed that helping others through healthcare is the path I want to pursue.

One thing I hope to build in the future is a career and community centered around accessible, compassionate healthcare. As someone pursuing optometry, I want to build more than just a profession for myself—I want to create an environment where people feel supported, cared for, and educated about their health. Growing up in Wyoming, I saw how access to specialized healthcare can sometimes be limited in rural communities. Because of that, many people delay care until problems become more serious. I hope to help change that by building strong relationships with patients and providing care that improves both vision and quality of life. My interest in optometry is personal because I have dealt with poor vision for most of my life. As a student-athlete competing in cross country and track, I understand how much vision affects daily performance, confidence, and independence. Working as an optometric technician at Family Vision Clinic has also shown me how meaningful proper vision care can be. Seeing patients leave with improved eyesight and greater confidence reinforced my desire to continue pursuing this field. In addition to building a healthcare career, I also want to build a life centered around leadership, service, and stability. Balancing academics, athletics, and work responsibilities has taught me discipline and perseverance. These experiences have helped me understand that building a successful future takes consistency and commitment over time. I hope to continue developing these qualities throughout my education and eventually use them to positively impact others. The positive impact I hope to make extends beyond individual patients. By providing preventative care, educating people about eye health, and helping detect diseases early, I hope to improve overall health and wellness within the communities I serve. I also want to mentor younger students and athletes the same way coaches, teachers, and mentors have encouraged me throughout my life. Ultimately, the future I want to build is one that combines healthcare, leadership, and service. I want to create a career that allows me to help people every day while also making a lasting difference in my community.

My experiences on the baseball field have shaped who I am today by teaching me leadership, perseverance, teamwork, and how to respond to both success and adversity. Baseball was a major part of my life from the age of five through my senior year of high school. Over those years, I learned lessons that extended far beyond the game itself and continue to influence my character, goals, and future plans. I played Little League baseball throughout my childhood and teenage years, eventually helping my team win local Little League championships when I was twelve and again at sixteen. During my senior year, my team won the State Senior Little League Championship, one of the most memorable accomplishments of my athletic career. I also competed in Junior and Senior Babe Ruth baseball, where my teams finished as state runner-ups twice. Those experiences taught me the value of commitment and the importance of working toward a goal with others who share the same determination. As a pitcher, first baseman, and outfielder, I learned that every role on the field requires communication and leadership. Pitching especially taught me responsibility because the pitcher helps control the pace of the game and often directs defensive plays. I learned how important it was to stay calm under pressure and focus on the next pitch rather than dwelling on mistakes. Playing outfield also taught me communication and awareness. Outfielders must work together on fly balls and quickly return the ball to the correct base to prevent runners from advancing. These situations required trust, teamwork, and quick decision-making. One of the most important lessons baseball taught me was perseverance. The game is full of highs and lows. There were games where we came from behind in the final at-bat to win, and there were also moments where we needed just a few more outs to complete a major victory. Baseball taught me how to handle failure and success with maturity. Even great players fail regularly in baseball, and learning to move forward after a strikeout or tough inning taught me resilience. I learned that one difficult moment does not define the outcome of a game—or a person. Another important lesson I learned was how to encourage others. When teammates were struggling, I tried to help them focus on the next at-bat or play rather than on their mistakes. On defense, I encouraged teammates to focus on getting the next out and staying positive under pressure. These experiences taught me the importance of leadership through encouragement rather than criticism. I learned that teams perform best when players support one another and stay focused together. The coaches, teammates, and mentors I met through baseball also influenced who I am today. They taught me accountability, discipline, and how to compete with integrity. Those lessons continue to impact my life as a student-athlete in college and as I prepare for a future career in healthcare. I plan to pursue optometry, and many of the qualities I developed through baseball—communication, patience, leadership, and composure under pressure—will help me care for patients and work effectively with others. Baseball shaped me much more than my athletic abilities. It helped shape my mindset, my work ethic, and my approach to challenges. The lessons I learned on the field about perseverance, teamwork, and encouraging others are values I hope to carry forward throughout my life and future career.

One thing that makes me a little different is that I can play the quad drums upside down. Most people who know me from the band or school are usually surprised when they see it for the first time because it looks completely unnatural. Playing quads normally already takes coordination, rhythm, and endurance, but flipping them upside down changes the feel and positioning entirely. What started as something fun eventually became something I was known for. It always got reactions from friends and teammates because it was unexpected and, honestly, a little awkward-looking. At the same time, it reflected a part of my personality—I enjoy challenging myself and trying things in a different way, even if they seem strange at first. Music has been a major part of my life for years. In high school, I participated in marching band, pep band, jazz band, and symphony band while also balancing cross country and track. Playing the drums taught me discipline, focus, and teamwork. Marching band, especially, required precision and coordination, and over time, I became more confident stepping outside my comfort zone. Learning how to play quads upside down may not be the most useful skill in the world, but it became one of those small things that made me memorable and helped me connect with others. Another thing that makes me stand out is something I have had no control over my entire life—my hair. The left side of my hair naturally waves and curls, while the right side stays relatively straight. No matter how I style it, the two sides seem to have completely different plans. Growing up, I used to think it was frustrating because it never looked perfectly even like everyone else’s hair. Over time, though, I realized it was just part of who I am. Friends and family joke about it sometimes, but it has also taught me to be more comfortable with things that make me different. I think everyone has something a little awkward or unusual about them, whether it is a skill, personality trait, or physical characteristic. For me, those things have actually helped me become more confident and less worried about fitting perfectly into expectations. Being a student-athlete, musician, and future healthcare professional has taught me that individuality is not something to hide. Often, the things that make us different are what make us memorable. In the end, my “awkward” things may seem small, but they reflect a bigger lesson I have learned: it is okay to stand out. Whether it is upside-down drumming or uneven hair, those differences are part of what makes me who I am.

I plan to make a positive impact on the world by combining my passion for healthcare, my personal experiences, and my desire to help others through a career in optometry. I have dealt with poor vision for most of my life, which has given me a firsthand understanding of how important eyesight is in everyday activities. Whether it is learning in school, competing in sports, driving safely, or simply carrying out daily tasks, vision affects nearly every part of life. Because of this, I want to dedicate my future to helping people protect and improve one of their most important senses. My interest in optometry deepened through my experience working as an optometric technician at Family Vision Clinic in Wyoming. There, I was able to interact with patients and observe the difference proper vision care can make. One of the most rewarding parts of that experience was seeing patients realize how much clearer and easier life could become with the right treatment or prescription. Those moments showed me that healthcare is not just about treating conditions—it is about improving confidence, independence, and overall quality of life. In addition to my interest in healthcare, my experiences as a student-athlete have shaped the way I want to impact others. Competing in cross country and track at Concordia University Nebraska has taught me discipline, perseverance, and leadership. Balancing academics, athletics, and work responsibilities requires strong time management and commitment. Through sports, I have also learned the importance of supporting others and helping teammates improve. Whether it is encouraging someone during a difficult workout or helping classmates study for exams, I have always enjoyed being someone others can rely on. Looking ahead, I hope to use my education to serve communities with limited access to specialized healthcare. In rural areas, especially, healthcare providers often play an important role not only in treatment, but also in education and prevention. I want to help patients understand the importance of routine eye care and early detection of diseases such as glaucoma, diabetic eye disease, and macular degeneration. Preventing vision loss can significantly improve a person’s long-term health, safety, and independence. I also believe making a positive impact starts with how you treat people every day. Small actions such as listening carefully, showing compassion, and being willing to help others can make a meaningful difference. Through my future career, I hope to build strong relationships with patients and create an environment where people feel respected and cared for. Ultimately, I want my impact to come from helping others live healthier and more confident lives. By pursuing a career in optometry and continuing to serve others through healthcare, leadership, and compassion, I hope to make a lasting difference both within my community and beyond.

Pursuing Optometry with Purpose and Perspective I have chosen to pursue a career in optometry because of both personal experience and the desire to make a meaningful impact in healthcare. Growing up, I have dealt with poor vision for most of my life, which has made me more aware of how important clear vision is in everyday activities. As a student-athlete competing in cross country and track, I have experienced firsthand how vision affects performance, safety, and confidence. Managing glasses and contact lenses during training showed me that even small vision challenges can have a significant impact. Over time, this personal experience developed into a strong interest in optometry and a clear career goal. That interest was further reinforced through my work as an optometric technician at Family Vision Clinic in Wyoming. In this role, I have been able to assist with patient care and observe the difference proper vision correction can make. Seeing patients leave with improved vision and a renewed sense of confidence showed me that optometry is not just about eyesight—it is about improving quality of life. These experiences confirmed that I want to be part of a field where I can directly help others in a meaningful and lasting way. My short-term goal is to complete my undergraduate education while maintaining a strong GPA and gaining additional clinical experience. I also plan to prepare for and attend optometry school, where I can further develop the knowledge and skills necessary to provide high-quality patient care. My long-term goal is to become a practicing optometrist and serve communities similar to the one I grew up in. In more rural areas, access to specialized healthcare can be limited, and I want to help fill that gap by providing accessible, preventative, and patient-focused care. I hope to not only treat vision issues, but also educate patients on the importance of eye health and early detection of disease. Being an underrepresented minority in healthcare has also shaped my perspective and motivation. Representation matters in building trust and improving access to care. Patients often feel more comfortable when they can relate to their provider or feel understood in their experiences. As an Asian-American pursuing a career in optometry, I recognize the importance of diversity in healthcare. It motivates me to work hard, not only to succeed personally, but also to contribute to a more inclusive and supportive healthcare environment where all patients feel valued and respected. Financially, pursuing higher education presents significant challenges. The cost of my undergraduate education is substantial, and optometry school tuition can exceed $50,000 per year, not including living expenses. I have worked to manage these costs by being responsible with my finances, working during the summers, and saving for future expenses. However, scholarships play an essential role in making my goals achievable. This scholarship would help reduce financial stress, allowing me to focus more fully on my education, clinical experiences, and preparation for optometry school. It would also help minimize the amount of debt I carry into my professional career. Overall, my decision to pursue optometry is driven by personal experience, a passion for healthcare, and a desire to make a difference. This scholarship would be an important step in helping me continue that path and achieve my long-term goals.

Living Out My Faith Through Purpose and Care Faith has been a central part of my life for as long as I can remember. I was raised in a Christian, non-denominational household where my beliefs were shaped not only by my parents but also by my grandmother, who played a strong role in raising me. Her example of faith in daily life—through kindness, consistency, and service—left a lasting impression on me. In addition, my uncle serves as a Foursquare pastor, which has further influenced my understanding of living out faith with purpose. These early experiences helped form a foundation that continues to guide my decisions, values, and future goals. Today, I actively live out my faith in both small and meaningful ways. As a student at a private Christian university, my education is centered around Christ in both academics and daily life. My team and coaches begin practices with prayer, and the environment encourages us to live with integrity, discipline, and respect for others. Being part of this community has reinforced the idea that faith is not just something you believe—it is something you practice. In the past, I also had the opportunity to play drums in my church band, which allowed me to serve and contribute to something greater than myself. These experiences have taught me that living out my faith means being intentional in how I treat others and how I approach my responsibilities. My faith also shapes my belief in the value of life at all stages. Supporting a pro-life perspective, for me, is rooted in the belief that every life has purpose and value. This belief influences how I think about healthcare and my future career. I am pursuing a path in optometry, where I will have the opportunity to directly improve people’s quality of life. While optometry may not always be seen as a life-or-death field, it plays an important role in protecting health, independence, and well-being. Helping someone see clearly can impact their ability to learn, work, and live safely, which is a meaningful way to support and respect life. Looking ahead, I plan to use my education to make a positive impact by providing accessible, compassionate care to others. I want to serve communities with limited access to healthcare and ensure individuals receive the attention and support they need. My goal is not only to treat vision issues, but also to build relationships with patients and help them understand the importance of caring for their overall health. By doing this, I hope to reflect my faith through service, compassion, and a commitment to helping others live fuller, healthier lives. Ultimately, my faith has given me direction, purpose, and a desire to serve. It continues to guide my goals and how I approach my future in healthcare, with a focus on valuing and supporting life in all I do.

Finding Growth Through Struggle Music has always been a way for me to process challenges, and some of Olivia Rodrigo’s songs reflect emotions and experiences that connect closely to my own journey. One lyric that stands out to me is from her song “drivers license,” where she sings about moving forward even when things feel uncertain. That idea of growth through discomfort is something I have experienced throughout my life as both a student and an athlete. As a college student-athlete competing in cross country and track, I have had to learn how to push through moments where things feel overwhelming. Balancing a full academic schedule with daily practices, travel, and training is not easy. There are days when progress feels slow, and it is tempting to focus on frustration rather than improvement. Olivia Rodrigo’s music often captures that feeling of being in between where you are and where you want to be. It reminds me that growth does not always feel successful in the moment, but it is still happening. Another lyric that resonates with me comes from “brutal,” where she talks about the pressure to meet expectations. As someone who has always pushed myself academically and athletically, I understand that pressure. In high school, I balanced multiple sports, band, and a demanding academic schedule. Now in college, that pressure has not gone away—it has simply evolved. Maintaining a strong GPA while competing at a high level in athletics requires constant effort and discipline. At times, it can feel like there is always more to achieve. Hearing someone express that pressure so honestly makes it easier to recognize that those feelings are normal and part of the process. At the same time, Olivia Rodrigo’s music also reflects resilience, which is something I try to carry into my own life. One of the biggest challenges I have faced is dealing with poor vision, especially as a runner. Whether it is struggling with glasses during workouts or managing contact lenses in different conditions, it has been something I have had to adapt to over time. Instead of letting that hold me back, it has shaped my goals and motivated me to pursue a career in optometry. I want to help others overcome similar challenges and improve their quality of life. What I connect with most in her music is the idea that challenges are not setbacks—they are part of becoming who you are. Whether it is academic pressure, athletic struggles, or personal obstacles, each experience contributes to growth. Olivia Rodrigo’s lyrics often capture the honesty of those moments, which makes them relatable and meaningful. Overall, her music reflects both the difficulties and the progress that come with growing up and working toward a goal. My journey has not been perfect, but it has been shaped by persistence, learning, and the desire to improve. In the same way her songs highlight both struggle and strength, my experiences have taught me that success is not just about outcomes, but about continuing to move forward even when things are challenging.

My name is Thomas Ethan Sholey, but I go by Ethan. I am currently a student at Concordia University Nebraska, where I compete as a member of the cross country and track teams while pursuing my studies in the sciences. Although I am in my second year, I am academically a junior after earning college credits during high school. Balancing academics and athletics has taught me discipline, time management, and perseverance—skills that have helped shape both who I am and the direction I want to take in life. I chose healthcare as my field of study because of my personal experiences with vision and the impact it has had on my daily life. I have had poor vision for most of my life, and as a runner, that has created unique challenges. Running with glasses can be difficult, especially during workouts when they slip due to sweat, while contact lenses require constant care and protection from the environment. These experiences made me realize how important clear vision is—not just for performance in sports, but for safety, confidence, and overall quality of life. That realization led me to develop a strong interest in optometry. Over time, that interest turned into a clear goal: I want to become an optometrist. Working as an optometric technician at Family Vision Clinic in Wyoming during the summers has confirmed that this is the right path for me. Through that experience, I have been able to interact with patients, assist with exams, and see the direct impact that proper vision care can have. One of the most meaningful parts of that experience has been seeing patients leave with improved vision and a renewed sense of confidence. It showed me that healthcare is not just about treating a condition—it is about improving someone’s daily life. Beyond my clinical experience, I have always enjoyed helping others learn and improve. In both high school and college, I have spent time studying with classmates and helping explain difficult material so that we can succeed together. As a student-athlete, I have also taken on leadership roles, helping teammates improve their running form, understand training routines, and stay motivated. These experiences have reinforced my desire to work in a field where I can directly help others grow, improve, and succeed. The difference I want to make in healthcare is centered around access, education, and quality of care. I hope to provide vision care to individuals in communities like the one I grew up in, where access to specialized healthcare may not always be easy. I also want to help educate patients about the importance of eye health, not just correcting vision, but preventing long-term issues. Many people do not realize how much their vision affects their daily lives until it is improved, and I want to be part of that positive change. Ultimately, I chose healthcare because it allows me to combine my interests in science, my personal experiences, and my desire to help others. My goal is not only to build a successful career, but to make a meaningful impact on the lives of the people I serve.

My name is Thomas Ethan Sholey, but I go by Ethan. I am currently a second-year student at Concordia University Nebraska, where I compete as a student-athlete in cross country and track. Although I am only in my second year, I am academically a junior due to earning 24 college credits during high school through Western Wyoming Community College. Education has always been an important part of my life, not just as a requirement, but as a way to grow, challenge myself, and find direction for my future. Throughout high school in Rock Springs, Wyoming, I stayed heavily involved in both academics and extracurricular activities. I graduated with a 4.18 GPA while participating in cross country, indoor track, and outdoor track, as well as marching band, pep band, jazz band, and symphony band. I played quad drums and drum set, and over those four years, I earned 16 varsity letters. Balancing all of these commitments taught me discipline, time management, and perseverance—skills that continue to shape who I am today. Now in college, that balance has become even more challenging. Being a student-athlete at the collegiate level is essentially like having a job. Between daily practices, travel for meets, and strength training, my schedule is demanding. There are days when it feels like there are not enough hours to fully commit to both academics and athletics. However, these challenges have pushed me to become more focused and intentional with my time. Maintaining a 3.81 GPA while competing at this level has required consistency, sacrifice, and determination. Education, for me, is not just about grades—it is about learning how to push through difficulty and continue improving. One of the biggest challenges that has shaped my goals is something I have dealt with most of my life: poor vision. As a runner, this has created unique obstacles. Running with glasses can be difficult, especially during intense workouts when sweat causes them to slip. While contact lenses help, they come with their own challenges, including dryness and the need for proper eye protection from sunlight. These experiences have made me more aware of how important vision is in everyday life, especially in activities that require precision, focus, and safety. Because of this, I developed a strong interest in optometry. Over time, that interest turned into a clear goal: I want to become an optometrist. Working as an optometric technician at Family Vision Clinic in Wyoming during the summers has played a major role in confirming that path for me. I have had the opportunity to interact with patients, assist in exams, and see firsthand how much of a difference proper vision care can make. Helping someone see clearly, sometimes for the first time in years, is something that has stuck with me. It showed me that optometry is not just about eyesight—it is about improving quality of life. Education has given me the direction to pursue this goal. My coursework in science has helped me build the foundation I need, while my experiences outside the classroom have given me purpose. I have always enjoyed helping others understand material, whether it was in high school or now in college study groups. Teaching others has not only helped them succeed, but it has also strengthened my own understanding. That mindset—learning together and helping others improve—is something I carry with me in everything I do. Leadership has also been an important part of my journey. Through sports, I have taken on roles where I help teammates improve their running form, understand stretching routines, and stay motivated. I try to lead by example, showing consistency and effort every day. Being part of a team has taught me that success is not just individual—it is about lifting others up as well. That same mindset applies to my academic and future professional goals. Looking ahead, I plan to graduate early from Concordia University after the fall semester of 2027. My goal is to continue my education in optometry school and eventually return to a community like the one I grew up in. I want to provide care to people who may not always have easy access to vision services and help them improve their daily lives. Whether it is a student struggling to see the board in class or an adult whose vision is affecting their work, I want to be someone who can make a meaningful difference. Overall, education has shaped my goals by giving me both direction and purpose. It has taught me how to overcome challenges, manage my time, and stay committed even when things are difficult. My experiences as a student-athlete, my struggles with vision, and my work in an optometry clinic have all contributed to the path I am on today. I believe that who I am becoming—someone who is disciplined, motivated, and focused on helping others—is just as important as the career I am working toward. Through my education, I hope not only to build a successful future for myself, but also to positively impact the lives of others.

Mack was a senior when I was in 8th grade. I recall her leading the marching band at football games and playing joyfully in her jazz band during concerts with the junior high band. She lived a few blocks from me. Dawson was my neighborhood classmate and friend. I grew up with him playing youth sports and drums in band and jazz band from 6th grade until our graduation together in 2024. He was also in many of my classes as we competed to get that A and an overall high GPA. Mack took her life in 2020. Dawson just recently took his life this last fall in 2024. They were both in their first year of college, just into the second month. Both received full-ride scholarships to the University of Wyoming, covering their total costs. I attend an out-of-state school where I am a student-athlete. I missed a cross-country meet to return to Dawson’s memorial. My unwavering Christian values guide me through life's twists and turns. They shape my decisions, actions, and interactions with the world. Embracing these values allows me to stand out in a society that often pressures us to conform. By remaining true to myself, I can radiate my uniqueness in a world where uniformity is the norm. As a diligent student-athlete, I have discovered that my unique talent lies in my unwavering strength and unbridled passion. To hone these talents, I have made a conscious effort to enroll in advanced math and science courses, which have helped me develop a more analytical and strategic approach to athletic training. Additionally, I have explored innovative training programs as a runner, which have enabled me to push my physical boundaries and achieve new levels of performance. How My Family Has Shaped Who I Am Today Our families hold a cherished and irreplaceable role in our hearts, serving as beacons of support and guidance throughout life's challenges and triumphs. Personally, I owe an immeasurable debt to my family, as they have been the unwavering foundation that has molded and sculpted me into the individual I am today. Their boundless love, unwavering support, and invaluable wisdom have intricately woven themselves into the fabric of my character, leaving an enduring and indelible imprint that continues to shape my every thought and action. My parents have significantly impacted me, mainly through their emphasis on the importance of education. They have always believed in the incredible capacity of knowledge to open doors to success. Since I was young, they have actively encouraged a love for learning within me, consistently motivating me to pursue excellence in all my endeavors. Growing up as an only child without siblings or close relatives, I relied on my parents to challenge and encourage me. Their guidance taught me the value of teamwork in a way that no other experience could. Our shared experiences created unbreakable bonds built on trust and mutual respect, and these invaluable lessons continue to shape how I approach my relationships to this day. Our family's profound emphasis on integrity goes far beyond academic achievements and social connections. Our values stem from my parents' unwavering commitment to honesty. Their ability to uphold integrity despite adversity has set a remarkable standard for gracefully and sincerely navigating life's challenges. Superheroes stand for courage, honor, resilience, invincibility, strength, and truth (CHRIST). My parents have been superheroes in my life since birth, inspiring me to share compassion. Courage—My parents are courageous, continuing to raise me according to traditional family values through challenging times when our world struggles to distinguish between good and bad. The Ten Commandments are often cited as the basis for all of our laws in Western democracies. Yet, our culture is changing so fast that virtues that were once prized are now scorned, and behavior that was once condemned is now celebrated. Honor—My parents sacrificed their friendships, social life, and stable income to be devoted and committed parents. They have always been my advocates, supporting every milestone in my life, dealing with teenage drama, attending all of my sporting events, being my instructional coaches in school academics, and dealing with everyday events. Resilience- In 2015, my parents suffered the tragic loss of my grandma. My dad lost his mother, and my mama lost her mentor and best friend. Dad sought peace over time, but not Mama. Even though God had taken away Grandma, He also gave Mama healing and the ability to forgive Him. Invincibility—My parents bestowed an aura of invincibility. Their confidence made them fearless in life’s challenges and trials, leading to spiritual growth. Strength- My parents are my stronghold through adversity. Truth—Every day, my parents live standing for God’s truth, which is represented by the Bible as the gold standard. His Word is ALWAYS constant and NEVER changes.

Why I Want to Be a Health Care Provider By Thomas Sholey Deciding to become a health care provider as an ophthalmologist is not merely a career choice for me; it represents my dedication to assisting others and positively impacting their lives. From a young age of being functionally blind, I quickly appreciated the aid of spectacle corrections. Since then, I have felt a strong inclination to support individuals during difficult times, and over the years, that inclination has evolved into a genuine commitment to serve. Ophthalmology provides a unique opportunity to blend empathy, knowledge, and expertise to enhance lives, and I am eager to embrace that duty. One of the primary motivations for pursuing this path is the opportunity to influence people’s eye health and well-being directly. Whether alleviating someone’s suffering, providing reassurance, or delivering essential care, ophthalmologists play a crucial role in helping individuals recover and flourish. Being involved in someone’s healing process is both humbling and motivating, giving me a sense of purpose that fuels my ambition to work in this field. The human body, particularly the eye and its functions, is a fascinating subject of study. My journey starts with a strong educational foundation in biochemistry at Concordia University, Nebraska. Establishing a solid biochemistry background lays the groundwork for exploring more complex subjects in the medical field, ultimately contributing to a well-rounded education and effective patient care. Ophthalmology stands out as a dynamic field due to the ongoing advancements in both medicine and technology. Keeping up with these developments poses a unique challenge, yet it is essential for addressing real-life issues related to eye health. The combination of intellectual growth through learning about new treatments and the emotional fulfillment derived from helping others makes a career in ophthalmology both stimulating and rewarding. Another factor that attracts me to ophthalmology is the collaborative nature of the work. Working alongside other professionals to provide optimal care fosters a sense of shared purpose and connection. I appreciate collaborating to address patients’ needs comprehensively, and I am enthusiastic about contributing to an environment where everyone’s efforts lead to meaningful outcomes. Ultimately, my aspiration to become an ophthalmologist stems from a profound desire to serve others. I recognize that this career will demand hard work, resilience, and compassion, but I am prepared to face those challenges directly. By following this path, I hope to enhance my patients' lives and develop into someone who exemplifies kindness, integrity, and commitment. For me, this is not just employment; it is a vocation aimed at creating significant change in the world. Our local ophthalmologist will be ready to retire by the time I complete my training. He is the only physician with this specialty in a 175-mile radius. I was born and raised in my hometown, where I lived my entire life until college. I looked forward to returning home to take care of my community's eye care needs that helped raise me.

Working Towards a Positive Change in My Community As I reflect on the events of the past year and the future, I am deeply committed to making a positive impact on my community. In the coming year, my focus will be on cultivating a stronger sense of unity and camaraderie within the community. I believe that by working together, we can champion environmental sustainability through various initiatives and projects, making our community a better place for all. One way I'm considering making a positive impact in our community is by organizing regular community clean-up events. These events will not only help keep our streets, parks, and public spaces clean but also encourage all of us to take pride in our surroundings. I believe that by working together, we can foster a more profound sense of community pride and cultivate a more vibrant and inclusive environment for all residents and visitors. Your involvement is crucial in making our community an even better place to live and enjoy. In addition to my other interests, I am deeply committed to advocating for environmental sustainability within my local community. I firmly believe that even the smallest actions, such as minimizing waste, practicing energy conservation, and actively supporting local eco-friendly enterprises, can collectively have a major positive impact. Through raising awareness and educating my neighbors and friends about these sustainable practices, my ultimate goal is to motivate and inspire them to proactively contribute to creating a better environment for all. Furthermore, I am committed to supporting local organizations working towards positive change in our community. My mother is Korean, and my father is Caucasian. I never considered myself different until I began participating in sports at a young age. We live in a small city in Wyoming, where the state is 86% white. Asians are less than 1% of the population. I never had an issue in our local school systems either, until junior high, but the first time I heard the word “gook” was at an out-of-state baseball tournament. Then, when I started wearing glasses, I heard some classmates start calling me “squints.” In junior high, some would say your nose is so flat and your eyes are so squinted that you run into walls. I did not initially understand why they would say that, but then I learned that I was considered “different.” I am fortunate to go to a small-town Christian school at Concordia University in Seward, Nebraska. This was my first long-term stay away from my family. I am a student–athlete. This Christian value school was an excellent fit for the start of my education journey. I formed an instant new family with my cross-country teammates, which continued through the track season and into the remainder of the school year. My coach is a Christian. We put forth Christ ahead of everything we do as a team. All the glory goes to him. I knew I wanted to become an ophthalmologist since I donned the traditional cap and gown for my kindergarten graduation. It felt like a natural fit for me, as I had been functionally blind and wearing glasses since a very young age. My interest in pursuing a doctorate grew stronger as I excelled in advanced high school math and science courses. Ophthalmology offers a wealth of opportunities for research and education in complex surgeries, and I'm more than ready to take on the challenge. My ultimate goal is to utilize innovative discoveries and medical advances in ophthalmology to help individuals one by one. As a pre-med student in Concordia University Nebraska’s distinguished biochemistry program, I am thrilled to pursue my passion for the art and science of caregiving. Medicine offers a rewarding blend of technical proficiency and empathetic communication, and I am eager to develop these skills further as I pursue a career as a physician. With a steadfast commitment to professionalism, a compassionate demeanor, and an unwavering ability to stay calm in challenging situations, I am confident that I possess the necessary qualities to thrive in medicine. My unwavering passion for making a meaningful difference in patients' lives, coupled with my unrelenting drive to continually expand my knowledge and expertise in the healthcare industry, will undoubtedly propel me toward success in this fulfilling and demanding profession. In this world, we each possess a unique identity, akin to a puzzle piece. Our distinct qualities truly set us apart, making us unique. I am excited to explain how these influences have shaped my aspiration and how this scholarship can play a vital role in helping me achieve it. Growing up in a blue-collar town and diverse neighborhood, I realized firsthand how education could change lives. Many families around me faced financial hardships while growing up with limited education, realizing too late that education was the key to breaking free from poverty. Volunteering at local after-school programs, I witnessed how access to educational resources could spark a love for learning in young minds. These experiences instilled a duty to advocate for equal educational opportunities and fueled my passion for pursuing higher education. On a more personal note, my family has been a tremendous source of inspiration. As devoted parents, they made countless sacrifices to provide me with opportunities they never had. My parents worked part-time, sacrificing a comfortable income so they could be full-time parents. Their resilience and determination taught me the value of hard work and perseverance. They emphasized that education is a powerful tool for empowerment and encouraged me to chase my dreams without hesitation. He was also in many classes with me as we competed to get that A and an overall high GPA. THOMAS SHOLEY I was born into a non-denominational Christian household in my only house, known to me, in Rock Springs, WY. My further influence in the lord was from my always-praying Grandmother in South Dakota. My parents both work, but one of them was always with me until I entered elementary school. Sometimes, though, in those early years, I would see Grandma for a week, or she would often come to my house in Wyoming one week every other month or so. Her other son, my uncle Shawn, is now a minister at Destiny Four Square Church in Rapid City, SD. I get to play the drums in his church when I visit in the summers. This time of year was when I enjoyed vacation Bible schools growing up. I am fortunate to go to a small-town Christian school at Concordia University in Seward, Nebraska. In this world, we each possess a unique identity, akin to a puzzle piece. Running Against the Grain: Inspiring Trailblazing Leadership of AAPI Voices During my junior year of high school, I found myself in an exhilarating position, having qualified to compete in the grueling 4x400 meters at the track regionals. I had just run my fastest open 400-meter race ever. Our team had been training rigorously throughout the season, and based on the statistics, we were all confident that we would not only qualify for the prestigious state meet but also secure a spot among the top eight teams. I also ran the anchor leg earlier that same day, automatically qualifying for the state meet in the 1600-meter sprint medley solely based on my time. We had the second-best time in the state at that time. However, in a twist of fate, my graduating senior teammate, a person I had always looked up to for his unwavering commitment and inspiring work ethic, found himself just shy of the qualifying mark for the regional meet as he was one of the runners that I came from behind in the open 400-meter race to beat. This was a heartbreaking moment, as he had poured countless hours into training, exemplifying the spirit of dedication and resilience throughout his time with our team. After an in-depth discussion and thoughtful reflection on the significance of our hard work and the values we uphold as a team, my coach and I made a mutual decision: it was only fitting to give my position to him. By doing this, we aimed to honor the countless sacrifices he had made and the determination he consistently displayed, ensuring that he could make his mark on the competition stage one last time. This decision was not just about a race but about leadership, camaraderie, and sportsmanship. I still vividly remember the look of determination on his face when he stepped onto the track for the region relay. It was a moment I will never forget, as he went on to qualify and compete at the state level, making our team proud and giving me a deeper appreciation for the spirit of athletics. His relay did place at the state meet giving him a moment on the medal podium as he was able to receive a state track medal his final year in high school. “Running against the grain” means giving up self-ambitions and pride to serve others. Through my developing years, I discovered that my athletic ability as a runner was not just a personal achievement, but a way to glorify something greater than myself. I learned the importance of setting aside my own aspirations, prioritizing others, and recognizing the value of uplifting them. Each race became an opportunity to showcase not just my skills, but also a reflection of my faith and the desire to honor God’s name. It's fulfilling to realize that our talents can serve a higher purpose and bring light to those around us. In doing so, we inspire others and create a ripple effect of positivity and encouragement.

Mack was a senior when I was in 8th grade. I recall her leading the marching band at football games and playing joyfully in her jazz band when there were concerts with the junior high band. She lived a few blocks from me. Dawson was my neighborhood classmate and friend. I grew up with him playing youth sports and drums in band and jazz band from 6th grade until our graduation together in 2024. He was also in many classes with me as we competed to get that A and an overall high GPA. Mack took her life in 2020. Dawson just recently took his life this last fall in 2024. They were both in their first year of college, just into the second month. Both had total cost full-ride scholarships to the University of Wyoming. I attend an out-of-state school where I am a student-athlete. I missed a cross-country meet to return to Dawson’s memorial. As a student-athlete, I recognize the value of leadership skills, which I have honed through my cross-country and track involvement as a long-distance runner and as the primary drummer in the marching, pep, and jazz bands. In addition to my academic and athletic achievements, I am dedicated to volunteering my time and expertise in various service organizations. Through my consistent academic performance, I have demonstrated my ability to manage my time efficiently and stay organized, which will be invaluable skills in any field, particularly in healthcare. In this world, each person possesses a unique identity, akin to a puzzle piece. Our distinct qualities truly set us apart and make us special. Working Towards a Positive Change in My Community As I contemplate the events of the past year and the future, I am deeply dedicated to positively impacting my community. In the coming year, I will focus on cultivating a stronger sense of unity and camaraderie within the community. I believe that by working together, we can foster a greater sense of community pride and create a more beautiful and welcoming environment for all residents and visitors. By volunteering my time and resources, I aim to contribute to initiatives that address social issues and promote community development. Over the coming year, I am enthusiastic about the prospect of actively contributing to positive transformations within my community. By cultivating a strong sense of unity, advocating environmentally sustainable practices, and backing grassroots endeavors, I aim to effect substantial and meaningful changes in the lives of those in my vicinity. Throughout my educational journey, I've encountered moments that have reinforced my commitment to learning. Participating in advanced courses in science and math allowed me to explore my interests and hone my critical thinking skills. In my hometown, there is only one ophthalmologist within a 180-mile radius. This startling reality prompted me to address that gap, especially with the local ophthalmologist nearing retirement. My job shadowing experiences have solidified my desire to pursue a career in ophthalmology. I realized that education isn't just about gaining knowledge; it's about applying it to make a difference in solving problems. As an aspiring ophthalmologist, I plan to return to my hometown to serve the eye healthcare needs of my community. Also, I plan to use my role as an educator to emphasize the importance of valuing education in my community, mainly because it primarily consists of blue-collar workers. I'm excited about the possibility of becoming a school board administrator! I aim to create policies that empower students to reach their full potential. I believe in making learning environments where all students feel included and supported. I want every student to feel valued and motivated to succeed. Obtaining this scholarship would be a vital leap toward fulfilling my ambitions. It would alleviate the financial strain of pursuing higher education, enabling me to focus intently on my academic and extracurricular endeavors. Even more importantly, it would validate my resolve to use education for positive transformation. With this assistance, I could enhance my participation in community service projects, guide and mentor younger students, and collaborate with those who share my aspiration for a better world.

I knew I wanted to become an ophthalmologist since I donned the traditional cap and gown for my kindergarten graduation. It felt like a natural fit for me, as I had been functionally blind and wearing glasses since a young age. My interest in pursuing a doctorate grew stronger as I excelled in advanced high school math and science courses. This has made finding ways to provide for my education even more critical.

The Beacon of My Aspirations: A Tribute to Inspiration and Goals The people who leave a lasting impression on our lives and steer us toward our goals can become the driving force behind our aspirations. For me, Mr. Urlacher, my high school cross-country coach, is that pillar of inspiration. His dedication to promoting a healthy lifestyle and his steadfast faith in his students' capabilities sparked a fire within me, setting me on a course I had never envisioned. Mr. Urlacher’s class went beyond just a room filled with health textbooks and exercise equipment; it was a place where leadership flourished and learning was valued. He taught with such passion that even the most challenging exercise routines seemed like attainable triumphs waiting to be achieved. His teaching extended beyond the usual curriculum; he helped us recognize the interconnectedness of life and understand our profound impact on the environment. Mr. Urlacher inspired me in a subtle but profound way. He noticed my keen interest in biology and encouraged me to explore it further. His words of encouragement weren't just words but actions. He stayed after school to discuss scientific articles, recommended books that broadened my perspective, and guided me through my first independent research project. His belief in me made me believe in myself. Inspired by this experience, I aspire to become an ophthalmologist. My goal is to educate people about the significance of eye health and its impact on overall physical well-being, enabling them to make informed choices regarding the treatment and care of eye conditions. This career path merges my passion for science with my aspiration to make a positive difference in people's lives, similar to Mr. Urlacher's impact on me. I am a student-athlete who runs long distances for my current school in college. Understanding science helps make me a healthier and more productive athlete. There are physiological and nutritional studies that have helped me become the person that I am. I have carefully planned my education to achieve my goal. I am pursuing an undergraduate degree in Biochemistry focusing on anatomy and physiology. Understanding the fundamental aspects of life at the organic level is crucial for my future role as a healthcare provider. After completing my undergraduate degree, I plan to enroll in medical school and return to my rural hometown in Wyoming. This specialized training will equip me with the skills to treat and manage patients in an area with no ophthalmologists within a 200-mile radius. I was born and raised all my life in Wyoming. Wyoming is my home, and I want to finish the rest of my life after obtaining my education. Education is not just about acquiring knowledge but also about shaping one's character and future. Mr. Urlacher's influence taught me that education is also about passing on the torch of inspiration. As I progress through my academic journey, I carry with me the lessons he imparted—not just in biology but in life. In conclusion, the inspiration derived from a mentor can shape one's goals and the pursuit of those goals. Mr. Urlacher's dedication to teaching and investment in his students' success has left an indelible mark on my life. As I move forward with my education plans, I intend to honor his legacy by inspiring others in the same positive, life-changing manner he has inspired me. Through my career as a health care provider, I aspire to be a beacon of hope and guidance, just as he has been for me.

Since kindergarten graduation wearing the traditional cap and gown, I envisioned my future profession. “When I grow up, I want to be an ophthalmologist.” The audience gasped in awe, “Wow!” It seemed to be the natural decision for me since I was functionally blind and wore glasses at a very young age. As I excelled in high school math and science courses, my interest in pursuing a doctorate became more of a reality. I excelled in all advanced high school math and science courses, two college English courses, two college calculus courses, and a college statistics math class in preparation for the MCAT (standardized testing required for medical school entrance). Ophthalmology offers extensive studies in research and education in complex surgeries, and I am prepared for the challenge. I want to undertake constant innovative discoveries and medical advances in ophthalmology to serve one person at a time. I am an optimistic and curious individual who thrives on learning and personal growth. I approach life positively, always seeking opportunities to improve myself and help others. My personality is rooted in empathy and determination, which allows me to connect with people while staying focused on my goals. One of my greatest passions is exploring creative outlets, such as writing and art. These activities enable me to express my thoughts and emotions while challenging my imagination. I am also deeply interested in science and technology, as they inspire me to think critically and innovate solutions for real-world problems. Balancing creativity with analytical thinking is something I genuinely enjoy. My values are centered around integrity, kindness, and perseverance. I believe in respecting everyone and working hard to achieve meaningful goals. These principles guide my actions and decisions, shaping the person I strive to become. My educational and career goals are rooted in my passion for biochemistry. I aim to become an ophthalmologist, using my skills to diagnose, treat, and manage eye diseases and pathology. Mastering biochemistry provides the foundation I need to achieve my goals. The course curriculum and job shadowing experiences are essential to gaining knowledge and practical skills. This journey strengthens my commitment to ophthalmology and equips me to tackle the challenges ahead. Collaborating with peers and learning from mentors has enhanced my critical thinking and adaptability. To reach my goal of becoming a doctor, my first step is attending Concordia University in Seward, Nebraska. They have an excellent pre-med program with a 98% placement into medical school. I will pursue a degree in biochemistry while accumulating all the prerequisites necessary for medical school. I have also been a student-athlete running long-distance races since junior high. Going to Concordia also offers me a chance to maintain my physical well-being as I run cross-country and track races for the school. The next step will be attending medical school. My college athletics will have concluded by then, and I can hopefully return to my home state of Wyoming to start my medical education as the state has a program for residents to attend medical school in the state for the first 18 months before going to school at the University of Washington to finish medical school. Then, I will receive more education and training as an ophthalmology resident again closer to home at the University of Utah in my home state. Once I am a trained doctor, I look forward to returning to the hometown I have known until this year. The local ophthalmologist has been practicing for 30 years now, and by the time I am a doctor, we will be ready to retire.

I realized that education isn't just about gaining knowledge; it's about applying it to make a difference in solving problems. I plan to return to my hometown to serve the eye healthcare needs of my community. Over the years, I have fond memories of my parents taking care of me when I was sick, mentoring me academically, and supporting me emotionally through my teenage years. These experiences define the phrase "Love is Kind," which is about small actions that show genuine care for others. My parents instilled this value in me from birth, and it's more than just a phrase - it's a call to action for love and kindness. In high school, there was a moment that truly encapsulated this feeling. I gave up my guaranteed medal in a relay race to a teammate who wouldn't have medaled otherwise. It inspired him to excel, and we became good friends. It taught me that true love is self-giving, not self-seeking. As I eagerly anticipate the future, I am dedicated to instilling love and kindness as my guiding principles in life. In college, I want to continue using social media as a platform for tutoring classmates, as I helped my classmates in math and science in high school. What was intended to offer academic support turned out to be a source of emotional support, providing attentive listening and words of motivation. By connecting intimately with people and listening to their stories, I hope to spread kindness and ignite hope in their hearts. As an aspiring medical professional, I intend to prioritize kindness in my workplace. As the leader of my practice, my endeavors include creating a culture where kindness is not just encouraged but also an expectation. In doing so, I will implement projects that promote compassion, community involvement, and social responsibility. Since high school, I have been using social media and personal blogging to spread messages of kindness, and I will continue to do so in the future. By sharing positive stories and celebrating the good deeds of others, I hope to motivate people to join a kindness movement. It is the little acts- a smile, a word of encouragement, a helping hand- that often have the most significant impact. If we all commit to these small gestures, imagine the collective power we could harness. It is a powerful call to action, urging us to be kind and show love in our daily lives. Love is much more than just a feeling; it requires a conscious effort to prioritize the needs of others before our own. This is the true measure of our capacity to love and care for others. My past experiences have taught me the importance of this simple truth, and I am determined to let this understanding shape my contributions to the world. I firmly believe that every act of kindness we perform plants a seed for a more loving, compassionate future. I am excited to see how these seeds will grow and transform our world, creating a landscape where love is not just felt but actively practiced by all.
