    Christina Taylese Singh Memorial Scholarship
Hello, my name is Chulwoo Kim. I am in the first year of the Johns Hopkins MBA program while working full-time as both statistician and economist in the federal agency. I am driven by one goal, to repay the helps I received from the community. I started working for the Federal agency Bureau of Labor Statistics and pursuing higher education in Johns Hopkins MBA program to help the public better. I used to be an international student in the PharmD program. Still, I was lucky enough to join the U.S. Army, get U.S. citizenship, and serve the nation, but unlucky enough to get permanently injured. I gave up PharmD school in the last year of the program and entirely focused on recovery. As a self-immigrant, unable to receive help from my family, I received support from the military unit, including one from my formal squad leader, SGT Brophy. I could jump back onto the educational and career track. I transferred to Penn State University in 2019 and graduated in 2021 with a B.S. in Mathematics and a Minor in statistics within just two years. My only motivation was to give back the helps I received from the community, and I decided to join the federal agency instead of the privates. Therefore, I have worked as an economist and statistician at the Bureau of Labor Statistics. To better understand how the economy and business work to find what types of help I can provide to the public better, I decided to learn from the Johns Hopkins MBA program simultaneously continuously. My life goal, in addition to providing helps to the public, is to be a role model to students and young adults who have to give up and suffer from their medical conditions or immigrant status. Due to the unlucky events described in the prior paragraph, I had to go through suicidal thoughts and attempts and lock up in the mental facilities for recovery. Therefore, I know how hard it is to bounce back from those emotional crises, and I looked for every opportunity to help others with the same situations as I used to have. During my Penn State time, I helped two individuals with a crucial emotional crisis by offering free tutoring and personal guidance. During this period, I realize that to help others and increase my chances of reaching out, I need to be in better social status, including in my career field. Therefore, I set my long-term life goal to promote myself to the Senior Executive Service level in the federal agency, where I can make guidance or chances at the national level. I found the fastest way to achieve my life goal of equipping myself with better knowledge is to get higher education, including MBA and MPH. This is why I decided to push myself continuously, to form a better me, to increase the chance to help others and make national effects of coping with it. As a survivor of severe depression but lucky enough to receive help from others to bounce back, I am always looking for chances to give the aids I received back to society. That is my sole motivation to keep pushing myself as working full-time in the federal agency and studying sinuously. As my life goal, I am desperately willing to help and assist people going through crises by making national administrative changes.

Reasons To Be - In Memory of Jimmy Watts
As someone who has experienced post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and suicidal ideation, I know firsthand how crucial it is to prioritize my mental health. Mental health is just as important as physical health; neglecting it can severely affect our overall well-being. PTSD is a mental health disorder that can occur after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event, such as military combat, sexual assault, or a natural disaster. PTSD can cause various symptoms, including flashbacks, nightmares, hypervigilance, and avoidance behaviors. These symptoms can make it difficult to function in daily life and can lead to feelings of depression and anxiety. One of the most important ways I maintain my mental wellness is by seeking professional help. Therapy has been critical to my recovery from PTSD and suicidal ideation. I work with a therapist who specializes in trauma and has helped me to develop coping strategies for managing my symptoms. Additionally, I have found that joining a support group for individuals with PTSD has been incredibly helpful in feeling less alone in my struggles. Another critical aspect of maintaining my mental wellness is self-care. Self-care looks different for everyone, but for me, it includes taking time to relax, practicing mindfulness and meditation, and engaging in physical activity. I have found that regular exercises, such as yoga or running, have been particularly helpful in managing my symptoms and improving my overall mood. In addition to seeking professional help and practicing self-care, I have found that connecting with others with similar experiences can be incredibly beneficial. This can include attending support groups, participating in online communities, or simply talking to friends and family members who are supportive and understanding. Sharing my experiences with others has helped me to feel less alone in my struggles and has allowed me to receive valuable support and encouragement. Finally, I must recognize when I need additional support and seek help when needed. This can be particularly challenging when struggling with suicidal ideation, as the shame and stigma surrounding suicide make it difficult to ask for help. However, reaching out to a mental health professional, a crisis helpline, or a trusted friend or family member can be life-saving. In conclusion, prioritizing mental health is essential, particularly for individuals who have experienced trauma or struggle with suicidal ideation. Maintaining mental wellness is critical to seek professional help, practicing self-care, connecting with others, and seeking additional support when needed. By prioritizing our mental health, we can improve our overall quality of life and handle life's challenges with resilience and strength.

As a Korean-American who immigrated to the United States young, mental illness has constantly been present. From a young age, I struggled with depression and anxiety. Still, it wasn't until my late teens that I was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) following a traumatic experience. This diagnosis significantly impacted my life and led me to drop out of my PharmD program. The stigma surrounding mental illness made it difficult for me to seek help, but eventually, I realized that I needed to take action. I was admitted to a mental health facility, where I stayed for several months. During this time, I underwent various forms of therapy and medication management. It was a challenging experience, but it was also transformative in many ways. It allowed me to understand my mental health better and develop tools to manage my symptoms. Mental illness has also affected my family. Being a self-immigrated Korean American, I did not have the same support system as many others. My family was in South Korea, and I had to independently navigate the mental health system. This was a daunting task, and I sometimes felt like I was facing an uphill battle. However, I also realized that my experience was not unique. Mental illness affects people from all walks of life, and breaking down the barriers to accessing care is essential. One of the biggest challenges I faced was the stigma surrounding mental illness. This stigma can be especially prevalent in the Korean-American community, where mental health issues are often seen as a personal failing rather than a medical condition. This made it difficult for me to seek help and feel isolated and alone. However, I also found that organizations and support groups provided a safe space for individuals struggling with mental illness. These groups allowed me to connect with others who understood my experiences and provided a source of comfort and support. Despite my challenges, I am determined to use my experiences to help others. I am pursuing a degree in psychology, hoping to become a mental health counselor. My experiences with mental illness have given me a unique perspective and have taught me the importance of empathy, compassion, and understanding. I am committed to breaking down the barriers to accessing mental health care and working to reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness. In conclusion, mental illness has had a significant impact on my life and the lives of those around me. The stigma surrounding mental illness can be a substantial barrier to accessing care, but resources are available for those who need them. My experiences have taught me the importance of seeking help, developing tools to manage my symptoms, and advocating for others. I am committed to using my experiences to help others and to work towards a future where mental illness is seen as a medical condition, not a personal failure.

To provide practical help to others, I must educate myself on how. Getting certifications regarding ethics and how to help others with suicidal ideation will improve my counseling. Therefore, I took the 'Gaining and Sharing Information and Knowledge' certificate from the Joint Staff to learn how to gather information from individuals and share needed sources. I earned 'Organizational Ethics' and 'Personal and Professional Ethics' certificates from Defense Health Agency to help me and individuals to build a healthy moral compass. Lastly, I earned a 'Livingworks Start' certificate, a certification that focuses on how to help veterans with suicidal ideations. Moreover, I try to find ways to contact people who need help. I start participating in an anonymous group chat where people with depression share their feelings. In the chat room, I provided overall healthy guidance and resources for them and encouraged participants to contact me individually since everyone is experiencing unique problems. My approaches and knowledge from certificates allowed me to help more individuals with better techniques.

Losing a sibling to suicide is an unimaginable pain that can shatter one's world. My journey through the devastating loss of my older sister due to the struggles she faced with her sexual orientation has profoundly shaped my perspective on life, resilience, and the power of education. However, through prioritizing my education and maintaining open lines of communication across distances, I found strength and resilience. I discovered the transformative power of love, understanding, and seeking professional help. To those currently navigating the aftermath of a similar loss, remember that healing takes time and requires a support system. By embracing open communication, expressing love, and encouraging professional assistance, you can navigate the pain and honor the memory of your loved one while forging your path toward healing and growth. Maintaining a sense of normalcy can be a constant challenge when every day can feel like a battle against one's body and mind. Despite the limitations and struggles, however, I have found inspiration in various places and strive to impact the world around me positively. The chronic medical condition I have experienced was not physical but rather a battle with depression resulting from my time serving in the US Army. My experiences and what I witnessed during my time in the military left me feeling overwhelmed, alone, and struggling to find a purpose in the world. It was a dark time in my life that felt like it would never end. Despite the difficulties, however, I was inspired to keep moving forward. I also found inspiration in the stories of others who had faced their battles with depression and came out stronger on the other side. My goal is to help others facing similar struggles find the support and resources they need to move forward. As a veteran in the US Army, I have had my fair share of experiences with mental health issues, particularly depression resulting from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). My time in the military exposed me to several traumatic incidents that significantly impacted my mental health. Thankfully, I had the support of my squad leader, SGT Brophy, who encouraged me to seek help when I started experiencing depression. His license was crucial to my recovery and motivated me to give back to society by joining a federal agency. My experience with mental health has influenced my beliefs, relationships, and career aspirations in various ways. Firstly, it has taught me to prioritize my mental health and seek help when needed. I have learned to recognize the signs of depression and to take the necessary steps to address them. My experience has also influenced my relationships, as I have become more empathetic and understanding toward others who may be going through mental health challenges. I have also developed a more robust support system with loved ones willing to listen and provide emotional support. My experience has also played a significant role in my career aspirations. My decision to join a federal agency was motivated by my desire to give back to society and help those struggling with mental health issues. I have found great fulfillment in my work, knowing that I am positively impacting people's lives. However, my experience has not always been positive. After working hard for five years due to my mental health issues, I had to drop off from a PharmD program. It was a challenging time, and I struggled with feelings of disappointment and failure. However, I have realized that setbacks are part of life, and I have learned to bounce back more robustly and resilient. Regarding my experiences with the mental health industry, I have had both positive and negative experiences. On the positive side, the mental health professionals I have encountered have been compassionate, knowledgeable, and supportive. They have provided me with the tools and resources to manage my mental health effectively. However, on the negative side, I have also encountered mental health professionals who were dismissive of my concerns or lacked the necessary expertise to address my specific needs. These experiences have made me more aware of the need to advocate for myself and seek out professionals best equipped to help me. In conclusion, my mental health experiences have profoundly impacted my beliefs, relationships, and career aspirations. They have taught me the importance of prioritizing my mental health, seeking help when needed, and developing a solid support system. Although I have had some negative experiences with the mental health industry, overall, my experiences have been positive. Taylor Swift ‘1989’ Fan Scholarship
As a fan of Taylor Swift, I can confidently say that the '1989' album is one of my all-time favorites. It is an album that has been on repeat on my playlist for years, and picking a favorite song is no easy feat. However, if I had to choose one, it would be "Blank Space." "Blank Space" is a song that speaks to me on many levels. The song's upbeat tempo and catchy melody always get me in a good mood, but the lyrics make it truly special. The song is a satirical take on how the media perceives Taylor Swift and her relationships. The lyrics are filled with tongue-in-cheek humor, and the music video is just as entertaining. It is a reminder that even in the face of criticism, Taylor Swift can laugh it off and own her narrative. The song's chorus, "Got a long list of ex-lovers, they'll tell you I'm insane," is a line that has become iconic. It is a message that resonates with anyone in a relationship that didn't work out and who had to deal with people talking behind their back. It is also a reminder that there is nothing wrong with having a history of failed relationships. Taylor Swift has been open about her personal life, and this song is a testament to how she has used her experiences to create relatable music. Another reason why I love "Blank Space" is because it represents a turning point in Taylor Swift's career. The song was the second single from the '1989' album, and it marked a departure from her country music roots. It showed her willingness to experiment with new sounds and genres, and the album proved that she could evolve as an artist while still staying true to her core values. The impact of "Blank Space" goes beyond just the music. The song was a massive success and topped the charts in several countries. It received critical acclaim and earned Taylor Swift a Grammy nomination for Record of the Year. It also has a music video with over 2.9 billion views on YouTube, making it one of the most-viewed music videos ever. In conclusion, "Blank Space" is my favorite song on Taylor Swift's '1989' album. It is a song that makes me smile, has a relatable message, and represents a turning point in her career. It is a song that shows the power of music to bring people together and how one person's experiences can inspire millions.

As a student and aspiring entrepreneur, I have faced numerous financial struggles that have hindered my ability to start my own business. While I have always been passionate about entrepreneurship and have dreamed of starting my own company, the financial realities of pursuing this path have been a constant source of frustration and stress. One of the main obstacles I have faced is the high cost of education. As a student, I have had to invest significant time and money into my teaching, which has left little room for pursuing my entrepreneurial dreams. I have had to work multiple jobs and take out student loans to cover the cost of tuition and other expenses, leaving little time or resources to devote to my business plans. Another financial challenge has been the high cost of living in the area where I attend college. With expensive rent, utilities, and other living expenses, saving money and investing in my business has been difficult. I have had to prioritize my costs and make difficult choices about allocating my limited resources. Despite these challenges, I remain committed to pursuing my entrepreneurial dreams and navigating my college career while opening my business. To do so, I have developed several strategies for managing my finances and balancing my academic and entrepreneurial pursuits. One key strategy has been to build a solid foundation for my business while still in school. While I may not be able to devote all of my time and resources to my business at the moment, I can still work to establish a strong foundation by conducting research, networking, and building a business plan. In addition, I have looked for creative ways to generate income and support my business goals while still in school. This includes taking on freelance work, participating in paid surveys and focus groups, and seeking grants and other funding opportunities. Another important strategy has been to prioritize my expenses and minimize unnecessary spending. By living frugally and carefully managing my finances, I can save money and invest in my business. This has meant making difficult choices about where to allocate my resources, but it has also given me the financial flexibility to pursue my entrepreneurial goals. Finally, I have sought resources and support to help me navigate the challenges of starting a business while still in school. This has included attending entrepreneurship workshops and seminars, seeking out mentorship and advice from successful entrepreneurs, and connecting with other like-minded individuals who share my passion for entrepreneurship. While the financial struggles of pursuing entrepreneurship while in college can be daunting, I remain optimistic about the future and committed to pursuing my goals. By focusing on building a solid foundation for my business, generating income through creative means, minimizing unnecessary spending, and seeking out resources and support, I am confident that I can navigate the challenges of opening a business while pursuing my academic goals. Ultimately, I believe that with hard work, determination, and a commitment to financial responsibility, I can overcome these challenges and succeed both as an entrepreneur and a student.

If I could have everyone read just one book, it would be my diary. Now, you might wonder why I would choose such a personal and intimate piece of writing to share with the world. Learner Calculus Scholarship
As someone who has studied and worked in the STEM field, I believe that calculus is an essential tool for anyone who wishes to succeed in these areas. Calculus serves as both the baseline and the backbone of many disciplines in STEM, providing a foundation upon which more advanced concepts and techniques can be built. One of the primary reasons calculus is so essential in the STEM field is that it allows us to model and analyze complex systems and phenomena. Whether we are studying the motion of particles in a fluid, the behavior of electrons in a semiconductor, or the spread of a virus through a population, calculus provides the tools to understand how these systems operate and make predictions about their behavior. In addition, calculus is a critical component of many other fields within STEM, including physics, engineering, and computer science. In physics, for example, calculus is used to understand the laws of motion and the behavior of objects in space and time. In engineering, calculus is used to design and optimize systems ranging from bridges and buildings to aircraft and spacecraft. And in computer science, calculus is used to develop algorithms and data analysis techniques that power everything from social media platforms to medical research. Beyond its practical applications, however, I also believe that calculus is an essential subject for anyone who wishes to develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills. When we study calculus, we are forced to think in abstract and complex ways and to break down complex problems into smaller, more manageable pieces. This problem-solving process can be incredibly empowering, as it allows us to approach challenges in a structured and systematic way rather than becoming overwhelmed by them. Moreover, I think calculus is essential for anyone wishing to pursue a STEM career because it teaches us how to learn and adapt to new challenges. Calculus is not an easy subject to master, and it requires significant effort and dedication to succeed. However, by persisting through the challenges that calculus presents, we develop the skills and mindset necessary to tackle new and unfamiliar problems in the future. Finally, I believe calculus is essential in the STEM field because it allows us to make meaningful contributions to society. By mastering the principles and techniques of calculus, we can learn new technologies, solve complex problems, and make advadvanceds ranging from healthcare to energy to transportation. In this way, calculus is a powerful tool for driving innovation and progress and improving people's lives worldwide. In conclusion, I believe that calculus is essential for anyone wishing to succeed in the STEM field. From providing a foundation for understanding complex systems and phenomena to teaching critical thinking and problem-solving skills, to allowing us to make meaningful contributions to society, calculus serves as both the baseline and the backbone of many disciplines within STEM. While it may not be the most accessible or intuitive subject to learn, I believe that anyone can master calculus with the right mindset and approach and that the effort is well worth it for those wishing to pursue a STEM career.

While I am used to working independently as a veteran, I have found that volunteering requires a different approach. By working together with other volunteers, I have learned how to communicate effectively, delegate tasks, and support one another in achieving a common goal. Another important lesson that volunteering has taught me is the power of empathy and compassion. As someone who has struggled with mental health issues, I have found that it is easy to become focused on my own problems and to feel disconnected from others. However, by volunteering with MANNA, I have been reminded of the importance of putting myself in others' shoes and approaching every interaction with kindness and understanding. In addition to these broader lessons, volunteering with MANNA has also taught me a great deal about myself as an individual. For example, I have found that I am a natural leader and that I enjoy taking on responsibilities and helping others. I have also discovered that I am capable of adapting to new situations and working under pressure, even when unexpected challenges arise. Perhaps most importantly, volunteering has helped me to regain a sense of purpose and meaning in my life. As a veteran, I have struggled with feelings of isolation and disconnection, but through volunteering with MANNA, I have been able to connect with others and to make a tangible impact in my community. This has given me a renewed sense of purpose and has helped me to feel more connected to the world around me. Overall, my volunteer service with MANNA has taught me a great deal about myself and my own personal values. Through working with others, practicing empathy and compassion, and taking on new challenges, I have gained a deeper understanding of my own strengths and weaknesses, as well as a renewed sense of purpose and meaning in my life. I am incredibly grateful for this opportunity to give back to my community and to learn more about myself in the process.

As a federal employee and PTSD veteran, I have always been driven by a desire to make a positive impact on the lives of others. After years of working in the public sector, I realized the difference in the lives of those around me; I needed to pursue an advanced certification or degree in my field. My goals for my specific area of nursing are focused on improving patient outcomes and increasing access to care. Specifically, I am interested in exploring the potential of telehealth and other innovative healthcare technologies to provide greater access to care for underserved populations. Perseverance is a term that holds a lot of personal meaning to me. It is the ability to push through adversity and continue striving towards your goals despite overwhelming obstacles. To me, perseverance means never giving up and always moving forward, no matter the circumstances. As a PTSD veteran, I have had to demonstrate perseverance in several different ways. My time in the military was filled with challenging situations and experiences that required me to remain focused and determined to complete my duties successfully. Even after I left the service, I continued to struggle with the effects of PTSD and had to work tirelessly to overcome the mental and emotional toll that it took on me. There were many times when I felt like giving up, like there was no way I could ever lead an everyday life again. But I refused to let my struggles define me. Instead, I chose to persevere, to push through the pain and darkness to find a way to move forward. I sought out therapy and support groups, and I worked tirelessly to develop coping mechanisms to help me manage my symptoms and live a fulfilling life. In addition to my struggles with PTSD, I have had to demonstrate perseverance in other areas of my life. As a self-immigrated Korean American, I faced several challenges while establishing myself in a new country. I had to learn a new language and navigate a complex cultural landscape to build a successful life. It wasn't easy, but I persevered, working hard to create a new life in an utterly foreign place. As a federal employee, I have also had to demonstrate perseverance in my professional life. Working for the government can be challenging, requiring dedication and commitment that is not always easy to maintain. But I have always been determined to do my best, to push through even when the work is complex and the stakes are high. Looking back on my life, I realize that perseverance has been a critical factor in my successes whether I was fighting my way through the worst of my PTSD symptoms or trying to navigate the complexities of a new country, my determination and refusal to give up allowed me to overcome these challenges and succeed. Perseverance is not just a mindset; it is a way of life. It requires a willingness to face adversity head-on, to push through even when the going gets tough. But the rewards of perseverance are immense. When you refuse to give up and keep pushing forward no matter what, you develop strength and resilience that can help you overcome even the most daunting challenges. In conclusion, perseverance is an integral part of my life. As a PTSD veteran, a self-immigrated Korean American, and a federal employee, I have faced several lenses that required me to be persistent and determined to overcome them. But it is through these struggles that I have learned the value of perseverance, and I know that it will continue to guide me in all of my future endeavors. I encourage everyone to embrace this mindset, never give up on their dreams, and always keep pushing forward no matter their obstacles.

As a student passionate about learning, I have set clear educational goals. My primary goal is to complete my Bachelor's degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Marketing. In addition, I have also set my sights on pursuing a Master's degree in Marketing, which I believe will help me advance my career and achieve my long-term goals. However, achieving these goals has not been without its obstacles. One of the biggest challenges I have faced is financial. As a self-supporting student, I have had to balance school needs with working full-time to pay for tuition and living expenses. This has often left me feeling overwhelmed and exhausted as I struggled to juggle my work and academic responsibilities. Another challenge I have faced is time management. With a full-time job and a family to care for, finding the time to study and complete assignments has been a struggle. I often find myself sacrificing sleep or leisure time to meet deadlines and stay on top of my coursework. In addition to these challenges, I have also had to overcome the obstacle of self-doubt. As an older student who has been out of school for several years, I often feel like I am behind my peers in terms of academic ability and knowledge. This has led to feelings of imposter syndrome and anxiety about my ability to succeed. Despite these challenges, I am determined to persevere and achieve my educational goals. To overcome the financial challenge, I have applied for scholarships and grants and worked part-time to supplement my income. Additionally, I have learned to manage my time more effectively by prioritizing my responsibilities and creating a study schedule that works for me. I sought support from my peers and professors to combat self-doubt and imposter syndrome. I have also taken advantage of resources provided by my school, such as tutoring and academic advising. Through these efforts, I have built my confidence and improved my academic performance. While these obstacles have certainly presented challenges to my progress, I believe that they have also made me a stronger and more resilient student. By learning to balance competing demands and overcome self-doubt, I have developed valuable skills that will serve me well in my academic and professional pursuits. I plan to continue pursuing my educational goals with determination and persistence. I will remain focused on building my knowledge and skills in marketing, and I will seek out opportunities to gain practical experience in the field through internships and networking. Overall, I am confident that I can overcome any obstacles that may come my way and achieve my educational goals. With hard work, perseverance, and a robust support system, I know I can succeed and positively impact my future career.
    Jerrye Chesnes Memorial Scholarship
Returning to school as a veteran with PTSD has been a unique challenge for me. As an older student, I faced several obstacles my younger peers didn't have to worry about. One of the biggest challenges I faced was adjusting to the academic environment. After years of military service, I had to get used to being in a classroom again. The pace of learning, the academic workload, and the expectations of professors differed from what I was used to. It took me a while to get back into the swing of things and to find my footing as a student. Another challenge was dealing with my PTSD symptoms while in school. Several things, such as loud noises, crowded spaces, and stressful situations, can trigger PTSD. People, noise, and activity constantly surrounded me in a college setting. This made it difficult for me to focus on my studies and caused me to experience anxiety and panic attacks. However, with the help of my professors and the student health center, I found coping mechanisms and resources to help me manage my symptoms. Another challenge I faced was feeling disconnected from my younger peers. As an older student and veteran, I often felt like I didn't have much in common with the other students in my classes. Many were just out of high school and didn't have the same life experiences as I did. This made it challenging to form meaningful relationships and connect with others. However, I tried to participate in student organizations and clubs, which helped me meet other non-traditional students and create a support system. Financial challenges were also a significant hurdle. As a veteran, I was able to use my GI Bill benefits to cover the cost of tuition and books. However, I still had to cover other expenses like housing, transportation, and childcare. Balancing these expenses while still being able to focus on my studies was a difficult task. I had to work part-time to supplement my income, which added another layer of stress to my already busy schedule. Despite these challenges, I overcame them and succeeded in my academic pursuits. I found that seeking out resources and support was crucial to my success. The veteran center on campus was a valuable resource that helped me navigate the academic environment and gave me a sense of community. I also took advantage of counseling services on campus, which helped me manage my PTSD symptoms and cope with stress. Being a non-traditional student also gave me a unique perspective on my academic pursuits. My life experiences, and military service gave me a different way of approaching coursework and problem-solving. I brought maturity and discipline to my studies, setting me apart from my peers. In the end, returning to school as a veteran with PTSD was a challenging but ultimately rewarding experience. It allowed me to further my education and set new goals for myself. I hope to use my experiences to help other veterans facing similar challenges in their academic pursuits. I hope that by sharing my story, I can inspire others to pursue their dreams and overcome any obstacles they may face.

Generational wealth is a concept that has become increasingly important to me in recent years, particularly as I have become more aware of the financial struggles faced by many individuals and families in today's society. For me, generational wealth is about creating a solid financial foundation that can be passed down from generation to generation, providing opportunities and security for future family members. Growing up, my family did not have much in the way of financial resources. My parents worked hard to provide for our basic needs, but there was never much left for vacations or savings. As I got older and began to think about my future, I realized that I wanted to build a different kind of financial legacy for myself and my family. To me, achieving generational wealth means taking a long-term view of my finances and making wise decisions to benefit my future family and me. This includes investing in assets that will appreciate over time, such as property or stocks, and building up savings and emergency funds that can be accessed in times of need. Of course, building generational wealth is not something that can be achieved overnight. It requires discipline, patience, and a willingness to make sacrifices in the short term to achieve long-term financial stability. This has meant being very intentional about my spending habits and ensuring I live below my means to save as much money as possible. One of the critical things I have done to manage my finances effectively and work towards achieving generational wealth is to create a detailed budget that considers all of my expenses and income sources. I track my spending carefully and ensure I stay within my means each month while setting aside a portion of my income for savings and investments. Another critical step that I have taken towards achieving generational wealth is to educate myself about the various investment options available. I have read books, attended seminars, and talked to financial advisors to better understand how to invest my money effectively and minimize risk. Ultimately, my goal is to build up enough wealth over time to leave a financial legacy for my children and grandchildren, providing them with the resources and opportunities to achieve their goals and dreams. I want to be able to pass on not just money but also the knowledge and skills that I have gained through my financial journey so that future generations can continue to build on the foundation that I have laid. In conclusion, achieving generational wealth is an important goal, driven by my desire to provide financial stability and opportunity for future generations. By being disciplined, intentional, and strategic about my finances, I am working towards building a solid financial foundation that will benefit not just me but also my children, grandchildren, and beyond.

Mental health is a critical issue affecting millions of people worldwide, including myself. My personal experiences with mental health have significantly shaped my beliefs, relationships, and career aspirations. While serving in the military, I struggled with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) after witnessing traumatic events during my deployment. It was a challenging time for me, and I struggled to cope with my condition's symptoms. However, my squad leader, SGT Brophy, was always there for me, and his support and encouragement helped me get through some of the most challenging moments. His assistance inspired me to want to make a difference in the world by helping others struggling with mental health issues. It is one of the reasons I decided to pursue a career in the federal government, where I can positively impact the lives of others. In my personal life, my experience with mental health has also affected my relationships. I have learned that mental health challenges can make it difficult for people to connect with others, and it is essential to have a supportive network of friends and family to lean on during tough times. Being honest and open about mental health challenges is crucial, and I have found that doing so has strengthened my relationships with the people in my life. My experience with mental health has also influenced my career aspirations. I aspire to become a senior executive service (SES) member within the federal government, where I can use my knowledge and expertise to help create policies and programs that address mental health issues. I believe it is essential to have leaders who understand the importance of mental health and are dedicated to creating positive change in this area. I have pursued further education to achieve my career goals, including earning an MBA. I have also sought opportunities to gain experience in areas relevant to mental health, such as working with veterans and other populations at risk for mental health challenges. Through these experiences, I have learned how to effectively communicate with individuals who may be struggling with mental health issues and how to design and implement programs and policies that address these challenges. One of the most important lessons I have learned through my experiences with mental health is the importance of self-care. When we are struggling with mental health challenges, it can be easy to neglect our own needs. However, caring for ourselves is essential to maintaining good mental health and achieving our goals. For me, self-care includes regular exercise, eating healthy, practicing mindfulness, and seeking support from friends, family, and mental health professionals when needed. In conclusion, my mental health experiences have profoundly impacted my beliefs, relationships, and career aspirations. Through my struggles, I have learned the importance of having a supportive network, being open and honest about mental health challenges, pursuing education and experience in relevant areas, and prioritizing self-care. I am dedicated to using my knowledge and skills to positively impact the lives of others, particularly those who may be struggling with mental health challenges, as I did. My ultimate goal is to become an SES member and help create policies and programs that support mental health in communities nationwide.

As a self-immigrant, managing my finances has always been essential to my life. It is crucial to managing my finances well as a student because it helps me live within my means and work towards achieving my academic and career goals. One of the main reasons why managing my finances is essential as a student is that it allows me to focus on my studies and extracurricular activities without worrying about money. When I first came to the United States, I had to learn how to manage my finances from scratch. I had to learn how to budget my expenses, save money, and pay my bills on time. I quickly knew that sound financial management skills were necessary to live a fulfilling life as a student. To manage my finances well, I do several things. Firstly, I keep track of my expenses by creating a budget. This helps me to see where my money is going and where I can make changes to save more money. I make sure to include all my monthly expenses, such as rent, food, transportation, and other bills, and allocate funds for any unforeseen expenses. Another way that I manage my finances well is by saving money. I make it a priority to keep a portion of my income every month. This helps me have a safety net in case of emergencies and work towards achieving my financial goals. For example, I plan to save up for graduate school, and by putting money aside each month, I am closer to achieving that goal. I also manage my finances well by being responsible with credit. I have a credit card but only use it for essential expenses and pay it off in full each month. This helps me to build credit and establish a good credit score, which is crucial to my financial future. In addition to these strategies, I also look for ways to save money. For example, I shop for groceries at affordable stores, buy used textbooks, and take advantage of student discounts. These small savings add up over time and help me to manage my finances well. Overall, managing my finances is essential as a student. It helps me live within my means, focuses on my studies and extracurricular activities, and achieve my academic and career goals. By creating a budget, saving money, being responsible with credit, and looking for ways to save, I can manage my finances well and ensure a bright financial future. In conclusion, managing finances is a crucial aspect of being a student, especially as a self-immigrant. By managing my finances well, I can live a fulfilling life and work towards achieving my academic and career goals. It takes discipline, organization, and a willingness to learn, but the benefits are well worth the effort.

As a recent college graduate, I understand the daunting reality of student loan debt. With the rising tuition costs and the increasing necessity of higher education for career advancement, many individuals, myself included, face a significant financial burden. However, I am determined to address my student loan debt proactively and responsibly. One of the ways I am addressing my current student loan debt is by making regular, on-time payments. By doing so, I am not only avoiding late fees and penalties but also improving my credit score, which can positively impact my financial future. I have also taken advantage of opportunities to reduce my monthly payments, such as enrolling in an income-driven repayment plan. This option allows me to pay a percentage of my discretionary income towards my loans, reducing the financial strain of my monthly payments. In addition to these measures, I am also exploring other strategies to address my student loan debt in the long term. One option is to seek out loan forgiveness programs. A variety of loan forgiveness programs are available to individuals who work in certain professions or meet specific eligibility criteria. For example, I am considering pursuing a career in public service, which may make me eligible for loan forgiveness under the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program. Another strategy I am exploring is refinancing my student loans. Refinancing involves taking out a new loan to pay off existing student loans, often at a lower interest rate. This can save me thousands of dollars over the life of my loan. Still, it is essential to consider the terms and conditions of any refinancing offer carefully to ensure that it is the right decision for my financial situation. Beyond these specific strategies, I am committed to adopting a proactive and responsible approach to managing my finances more broadly. This includes creating and sticking to a budget, avoiding unnecessary expenses, and prioritizing saving for emergencies and future goals. By taking these steps, I am addressing my current student loan debt and working to prevent future financial challenges. In conclusion, student loan debt can be a significant financial burden, but there are proactive and responsible strategies that can be employed to address it. Making regular, on-time payments, enrolling in income-driven repayment plans, exploring loan forgiveness programs, and refinancing are all options that can help manage current debt. Adopting a proactive and responsible approach to managing finances can help prevent future financial challenges. As a veteran, MBA graduates, and federal employees, we must work toward a better understanding of the nature of our universe. Not only does this allow us to gain a deeper understanding of the world around us, but it also has the potential to lead to advancements in technology, medicine, and other fields that can significantly impact society as a whole. One of the most important reasons we should strive to understand better our universe's nature is the potential for technological advancements. By studying the natural world and the laws that govern it, we can develop new technologies and innovations that can improve the lives of people around the world. For example, the study of physics has led to the development of new materials, technologies for energy production, and advancements in medicine. Furthermore, understanding the universe better can help us answer some of the most fundamental questions about our existence. Questions such as how the universe began, what it is made of, and how it will evolve have fascinated scientists and thinkers for centuries. By exploring these questions, we can better understand our place in the universe and our relationship to the natural world. One concept that I believe is crucial in our quest to understand the universe better is the scientific method. This approach allows us to make observations and develop and test hypotheses through experimentation and observation. By employing the scientific method, we can arrive at a better understanding of the natural world and the laws that govern it. Another essential concept is the idea of collaboration and teamwork. Studying the universe is a complex and challenging endeavor that requires the expertise and skills of individuals from various fields. Physicists, mathematicians, astronomers, and engineers bring unique perspectives and knowledge to the table, and by working together, we can make significant advancements in our understanding of the universe. In addition, I believe that critical thinking and problem-solving skills are essential in our quest to understand the universe better. Science is not a linear process, and unexpected challenges and roadblocks often arise along the way. By developing strong critical thinking skills, we can navigate these challenges and develop creative solutions that allow us to continue our exploration and discovery. Finally, I think it's essential to maintain an open mind and a willingness to question our assumptions and beliefs. The universe is vast and complex, and our understanding of it constantly evolves. By remaining open to new ideas and perspectives, we can continue to expand our knowledge and experience of the world around us. In conclusion, we must work toward a better understanding of the nature of our universe. This pursuit has the potential to lead to significant advancements in technology, medicine, and other fields and provide us with a deeper understanding of our place in the universe. By employing concepts such as the scientific method, collaboration, critical thinking, and an open mind, we can continue to progress in our exploration and discovery of the natural world. As a veteran, MBA graduate, and federal employee, I am committed to supporting and contributing to these efforts in any way I can.
    Healthy Eating Scholarship
As a veteran suffering from PTSD and depression, I understand the importance of maintaining healthy eating habits. In my experience, healthy eating habits have significantly impacted my physical and mental health. Eating a balanced and nutritious diet has helped me manage my weight and improve my physical health. After leaving the military, I struggled with weight gain and found it challenging to maintain a healthy weight. However, I have managed my weight more effectively by practicing healthy eating habits, such as eating more fruits and vegetables, limiting processed foods, and reducing my sugar and salt intake. This has not only improved my physical appearance but has also made me feel better about myself. Furthermore, practicing healthy eating habits has helped me manage my mental health. PTSD and depression can profoundly impact one's mental health, and I have found that maintaining a healthy diet can help alleviate some of the associated symptoms. Research has shown that certain foods can help improve mood and reduce symptoms of depression. For example, foods high in omega-3 fatty acids, such as fish, nuts, and seeds, have positively impacted mental health. I have incorporated more of these foods into my diet and noticed an improvement in my mood and overall mental well-being. Additionally, practicing healthy eating habits has helped me reduce my alcohol intake. Alcohol can hurt mental health and can exacerbate symptoms of PTSD and depression. By practicing healthy eating habits, I have been able to reduce my alcohol intake and improve my mental health as a result. Overall, healthy eating habits have made a significant difference in my life. Not only have they helped me manage my weight and improve my physical health, but they have also helped me manage my mental health and alleviate symptoms associated with PTSD and depression. However, I understand that maintaining healthy eating habits can be challenging, particularly for those who struggle with mental health issues. When I am feeling overwhelmed or stressed, I often reach for comfort foods high in sugar and fat. To combat this, I have developed strategies to help me maintain healthy eating habits, even during times of stress. One strategy I use is meal planning. Planning my meals makes me less likely to make unhealthy, impulsive food choices. I also make sure to have healthy snacks, such as fruit or nuts, to prevent me from reaching for unhealthy snacks. Additionally, I have found that mindfulness practices such as meditation and deep breathing exercises can help me manage stress and reduce my cravings for unhealthy foods. When I feel the urge to reach for unhealthy foods, I take a few minutes to practice mindfulness and recenter myself. In conclusion, maintaining healthy eating habits is essential for physical and mental health. As a veteran who has struggled with PTSD and depression, I have found that healthy eating habits have made a significant difference in my life. By practicing healthy eating habits and developing strategies to maintain them, I have managed my weight, improved my physical health, and alleviated symptoms associated with PTSD and depression.

    Your Health Journey Scholarship
As a PTSD veteran, I have overcome many challenges on my health journey. One of the biggest obstacles I faced was obesity. At my heaviest, I weighed over 300 pounds, and I knew that I needed to change to improve my health and quality of life. The first step I took was to make changes to my diet. I started by cutting out processed foods and sugar and eating whole, nutrient-dense foods. I also started tracking my calorie intake using a food journal, which helped me to become more mindful of what I was eating and to stay within a healthy calorie range. In addition to changing my diet, I started incorporating regular exercise into my routine. At first, this was a challenge, as I was not used to being physically active, and my PTSD made it difficult to be around large groups of people. However, I found that I could still exercise in a way that worked for me, whether going for a walk in nature, practicing yoga at home, or doing low-impact cardio exercises. As I continued on my health journey, I also sought out the support of others. I joined a support group for veterans with PTSD, where I could connect with others who were going through similar experiences. I also worked with a therapist who helped me address the underlying emotional issues contributing to my unhealthy habits. Over time, these changes began to impact my health positively. I started to lose weight, which gave me more energy and improved my mobility. I also noticed that my mental health improved as I felt more in control of my life and connected to others. However, my health journey has not been without setbacks. There have been times when I have fallen back into old habits, such as overeating or skipping exercise. In these moments, I try to be gentle with myself and remind myself that setbacks are a natural part of the process. I also reach out to my support system for encouragement and accountability. Looking back on my health journey, I am proud of the changes that I have made and the progress that I have achieved. I feel more confident, energized, and in control of my health and well-being. However, I also recognize that my journey is ongoing and that there is always room for improvement. In the future, I plan to continue making healthy choices and focus on maintaining a balance between physical and emotional wellness. I also hope to inspire others who are struggling with their health challenges, whether it is PTSD or obesity, to know that change is possible and that there is support available. In conclusion, my health journey has been a long and challenging process, but it has also been gratifying. Through changes to my diet, regular exercise, and the support of others, I have been able to overcome obesity and improve my mental health. While there have been setbacks along the way, I remain committed to continuing this journey and inspiring others to do the same.

    Mental Health Importance Scholarship
Finally, it's essential to recognize when I need additional support and seek help when needed.

This, in turn, helps me stay motivated and engaged in my academic work. Finally, prioritizing personal wellness helps me maintain balance and perspective. Getting caught up in academic work and forgetting about other aspects of my life is easy. However, when taking care of my mind and body, I can better maintain relationships, engage in activities that I enjoy, and pursue other interests. This, in turn, helps me maintain balance and perspective and avoid burnout. In conclusion, managing personal wellness is essential for academic success. Maintaining a healthy diet and exercise routine, getting enough sleep, practicing meditation and mindfulness, taking breaks, and having fun are all essential tools for managing personal wellness. When taking care of my mind and body, I can better manage stress and anxiety, maintain balance and perspective, and achieve academic success.

Depression and suicidal ideation can have a profound impact on one's life. My permanent disability triggered these experiences as a US military veteran and the subsequent decision to drop out of a prominent PharmD program during my fifth year. While this was a challenging time in my life, I overcame these difficulties with the help of my squad leader, SGT Brophy. He encouraged me to seek out help from a mental health facility, where I was able to start my journey toward healing. At the mental health facility, I found support from other veterans who had gone through similar experiences. I discovered that camaraderie and community were crucial to my recovery. In recent years, the importance of living sustainably has become increasingly apparent. As a responsible citizen of this planet, I have made intentional choices to reduce my carbon footprint and live sustainably in my daily life. In this essay, I will describe my deliberate decisions and why I believe it is essential to reduce my carbon footprint. Here is what I am trying to help the ecosystem. One of my intentional choices to live sustainably is not owning a car. Instead, I use my bicycle or utilize public transportation. This choice reduces my carbon footprint and promotes a healthy lifestyle. Cycling and walking are great ways to stay active and reduce air pollution. Public transportation is also an excellent way to reduce carbon emissions as it enables more people to travel without increasing the number of cars on the road. Another intentional choice I have made is using a reusable carbonating bottle for my soda, and this reduces the amount of plastic waste in landfills and oceans. Using a reusable bottle has eliminated the need to purchase single-use plastic bottles, a significant source of plastic pollution, and it also saves me money in the long run. In addition to using a reusable bottle, I also use a reusable grocery bag. Plastic bags are a significant source of pollution, and their environmental impact can be devastating. Using a reusable bag reduces the number of single-use plastic bags that end up in landfills or litter the environment, and it is a small change that significantly impacts the environment. Reducing my carbon footprint is important because it is essential for the planet's health. Climate change, caused by human activities, has far-reaching consequences that impact our lives and the lives of future generations. Reducing our carbon footprint is crucial to mitigating the worst effects of climate change. It is also essential to preserve our natural resources, which provide us with the necessities of life, such as clean air and water. In conclusion, living sustainably is beneficial not only for the environment but also for our health and well-being. The intentional choices I have made, such as not owning a car, using public transportation, using a reusable carbonating bottle, and using a reusable grocery bag, are small steps that significantly impact reducing my carbon footprint. I believe that by making intentional choices and taking small steps, we can contribute to a sustainable future for ourselves and future generations.

As a self-immigrant Korean American, I have had a unique journey that has made me a non-traditional student. My path to higher education has been anything but typical. I joined the United States Army straight out of high school, and due to military service and depression treatment, I had to leave college. However, my experiences have driven me to do more and strive for success. One significant factor that makes me a non-traditional student is my military service. I joined the Army right after high school to serve my country and gain valuable life experiences. However, my time in the military was cut short due to a severe bout of depression. I was medically discharged and sent home, which was a devastating blow to me. I felt lost and unsure of what to do with my life. During my lowest point, I received help from my former Sergeant, SGT Brophy. He not only supported me through my depression but also encouraged me to help the next available person, so the karma of helping built up. His kindness and guidance motivated me to keep going and gave me the drive to finish strong. As a result, I could graduate from college in 2021, despite the obstacles that had come my way. Another aspect that sets me apart from traditional students is my graduation year. I graduated high school in 2012 but only recently finished my undergraduate degree. It took me longer to complete my degree due to my military service and depression, but I never gave up on my dream of obtaining a college education. My desire to give back and help others drives me to do more. I have always been passionate about positively impacting the world, and my experiences have only strengthened that desire. I am determined to join a federal agency where I can use my skills to serve my country and protect others. I also plan on furthering my education, as knowledge is power and can be used to create positive change in the world. In conclusion, my unique journey has made me a non-traditional student. However, my experiences have also driven me to do more and strive for success. I am grateful for the support and guidance I have received along the way, and I hope to pay it forward by helping others. With determination and perseverance, anything is possible, and I am excited to see what the future holds for me.

As a federal worker, statistician, economist, and veteran, I have seen the devastating effects of gun violence on individuals, families, and communities. A public health crisis affects us all, whether directly or indirectly. As a veteran, I have seen firsthand the damage that guns can do in the wrong hands. I have lost comrades in arms to gun violence, and I know how it can impact families and communities. As a statistician and economist, I have studied the data and know that gun violence is a pervasive issue that needs to be addressed. It is a problem that requires a comprehensive solution, and I believe that as a federal worker, I can play a part in creating change. I plan to bring awareness to gun violence throughout my career by using my expertise to analyze and present data on gun violence. As a statistician and economist, I can analyze data and identify patterns and trends. I plan to use this data to inform policy decisions and educate the public about the realities of gun violence. By presenting the data clearly and concisely, I hope to help people understand the scope of the problem and the urgency of finding a solution. In addition to using my expertise to analyze data, I am also involved in several extracurricular activities to raise awareness about gun violence. For example, I volunteer with a local organization supporting gun violence survivors and their families. I also participate in community events and forums focused on addressing gun violence and promoting gun safety. By engaging with the community and working together, we can find solutions to make our neighborhoods safer. But perhaps the most important thing I can do to bring gun violence awareness is to share my story. As a depression patient, I know firsthand the toll that mental illness can take on a person, and I also know that access to guns can worsen things for someone struggling with mental health issues. By sharing my story and speaking out about the link between mental illness and gun violence, I hope to encourage others to seek help and advocate for common-sense gun laws. In conclusion, gun violence is a complex issue that requires a comprehensive solution. As a federal worker, statistician, economist, and veteran, I must use my skills and experiences to raise awareness about this issue and advocate for solutions that will keep our communities safe. Through data analysis, community involvement, and personal storytelling, I hope to make a difference and help prevent the devastating effects of gun violence. Together, we can work towards a future where gun violence is no longer a pervasive problem in our society.

As an economist and statistician, I believe that combatting climate change is one of our planet's most pressing challenges. It is a complex issue that requires a multifaceted approach that involves reducing our reliance on fossil fuels, making sustainable lifestyle choices, supporting sustainable businesses and policies, and prioritizing mental health and well-being. One of the most impactful ways to combat climate change is by reducing our reliance on fossil fuels and transitioning to renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, and hydropower. This will significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions and move us toward a more sustainable future. Moreover, this shift to renewable energy sources can also create new job opportunities and promote economic growth. In addition to reducing our reliance on fossil fuels, promoting sustainable lifestyle choices is crucial in combating climate change. For example, using public transportation, cycling, or walking instead of driving can significantly reduce carbon emissions. Additionally, reusable bags, bottles, and containers can help reduce waste and promote a more sustainable lifestyle. Moreover, supporting sustainable businesses and advocating for policies that promote sustainability and combat climate change is essential. By doing so, we can create a more sustainable economy that prioritizes the health of our planet and future generations. This can include policies such as carbon pricing, which places a cost on carbon emissions and incentivizes individuals and businesses to reduce their carbon footprint. However, combating climate change is not just about reducing emissions and promoting sustainable practices. It is also essential to prioritize mental health and well-being. Climate change can significantly impact mental health, and we must prioritize mental health practices that can help individuals cope with the stress and anxiety of climate change. This can include promoting mindfulness practices, providing mental health resources, and advocating for policies prioritizing mental health. Finally, I believe that promoting mental health and well-being is essential to any strategy to combat climate change. Climate change can significantly impact mental health, and we must prioritize mental health practices that can help individuals cope with the stress and anxiety of climate change. Overall, combatting climate change requires a collective effort from individuals, businesses, and policymakers. As an economist and statistician, I am committed to using my skills and experience to promote sustainable practices and advocate for policies that prioritize the health of our planet. By reducing our reliance on fossil fuels, promoting sustainable lifestyle choices, supporting sustainable businesses and procedures, and prioritizing mental health and well-being, we can create a more sustainable future for all.

As a person with a pharmacy and actuary background, after my statistician and economist experience in the Federal Agency, I am willing to go into the medical insurance and pricing field in federal agencies, Veteran's Affairs or Health and Human Services. I am eager to help the public and my battle buddies as a veteran and to provide a better healthcare system and insurance for needy people. I decided to take a long route to educate myself and get ready to solve the systematic problem. Eagerness to help with step-by-step: As an immigrant from South Korea, the country that provides public health insurance, I believe the insurance and healthcare system in the USA is way too expansive, despite the USA's outstanding and advanced healthcare technology. Therefore, I became eager to help the public and needy people. I joined the PharmD program by acquiring medical knowledge and a medication-distributing system. I studied the background information regarding USA's insurance program by taking Actuarial Science focused mathematics major and statistics minor at Penn State University. Furthermore, I learned how medical insurance works as an Actuary in the Office of Personnel Management for the Federal Employees Health Benefits Program. Now, to learn how to get budgets efficiently for the federal project by working as an economist in the Bureau of Labor Statistics and studying MBA at Johns Hopkins University with a specialization in Healthcare systems and government projects. Later, I will continue to educate myself by joining at least an MPH degree to gain further knowledge needed to design affordable national insurance. Limitation: As earning more and more about medical insurance and the governmental system, I realized that it would take more than a few decades to at least start the national project for the federal medical insurance-related issue. Therefore, I set my long-term goal to first start with the unique and needy environment, the VA and HHS. Due to the size and independent setup of the government agencies compared to others, it will be easier to start projects by providing and formatting efficient medical insurance and expanding its coverage. Also, in my understanding, Medicare, Medicaid, Tricare, and VA insurance are the neediest insurance project in society to be affordable insurance is the one at least society can provide to our heroes in the military and labor forces. Those are my long-term goal due to the limitation I face. These are why I am interested in the formulating healthcare and insurance related field and why I am interested in those fields.

Not only am I a US Veteran myself, but also I am from a multi-country veteran family. My father was an officer in the Korean military, and my uncle was an officer in the US Army, and both had various combat zone deployments during their services. Therefore, I learned and experienced PTSD, the dark side of the heroes, before their glories. How PTSD affected Soldiers' family life: My father subjective humans, including families, after losing his battle buddies in combat. He tried not to share emotions with anyone and started to isolate himself. He began to sleep alone and wake up whenever he felt tense. Back then, I was too young to understand my father's separating behaviors, and grow-up hating my father. Thanks to my mother, who was able to cope with my father's PTSD while raising me, the family remained bonded due to her generous heart. Later, after I decided to study abroad in the USA, I had a chance to research PTSD, which I had never heard of before. After researching PTSD for an entire year, I learned the tip of the iceberg about PTSD. Later, when I returned to Korea for a while, I formally apologized to my father, and I admired how he tried his best for the family while suffering from PTSD. I later learned that he refused to get diagnosed with PTSD to remain a strong father figure for my sister and me since, as a doctor, he knew that children recognizing their parents' mental illnesses could affect their childhood enormously. As an adult, I realized the PTSD and my father's condition; he decided to seek help then. However, not every PTSD story ends happily like this. In my uncle's story, due to suffering too much alone and not feeling comfortable around his family, they were not able to understand the PTSD. Moreover, my uncle, with PTSD, decided to live independently away from his family. He also knew that he might be a danger to his family. Education is needed: a) Public's unwillingness to learn about PTSD: Glories of the soldiers are the only mainstream focuses, and people idolize the combat veterans. Even the movie "American Sniper" shows Chris Kayle's heroism and intense adrenaline-pumping battle scenes for 2 hours and 10 minutes while explaining Chris and his battle buddies' death due to PTSD for less than 2 minutes simply because no one wants to know and spend more time in the falling of heroes, or their sufferings outside of the battle scene. They merely do favor to hear idolized heroes' suffering. I believe this is the leading causation veterans going isolated during PTSD. My experience of researching PTSD enlighten me to know about PTSD. Therefore, when the public has more chances to interact and learn about PTSD, society can prevent our heroes from being isolated and worsening their PTSD symptoms. b) The misconception of PTSD: When people think about PTSD, people usually match it with the warzone or combats, and when they hear about soldiers with non-combat experiences going through PTSD, people believe they are lying or weak. Due to this misconception, non-combat veterans refused to get help with their PTSD problems. However, this is a misconception. Due to the military environment being isolated and unique to society, many soldiers feel dislocated and stressed during their service, which leads them to experience PTSD too. Therefore, this is another reason why public education regarding PTSD is essential to help veterans who are suffering from PTSD due to either combat or non-combat experiences.

Since I started to have severe depression, I began to have anxiety whenever I faced a situation that did not have an objective answer or solution. Therefore, I had to drop out of my PharmD program, even though I was in the last year of the internship. I was good at math; after spending a few years being miserable, I remembered how much I loved doing math and was good at it during high school. I even participated in USAMO and Olypiad in Korea. I started to solve some math problems to keep myself occupied and remember the joyfulness I enjoyed during high school. Math is objective material. Even though I used to be an easy-going, outgoing, extroverted human being, depression changed my personality. I turned into an introverted, isolated, and non-active human being. Therefore, I had difficulty communicating or understanding subjective opinions or conversations with others, which was stressful. Due to the math problems being primarily objective, I do not have to stress out about subjectiveness when I solve them. However, math is objective, and formulas and explanations are structural based on objective facts rather than how the person feels, I was able to avoid stress while solving mathematics. Due to these two criteria, during the depression, I still managed to transfer to Penn State University with a mathematics and statics minor and completed the four-year course in just two years. Now, I even see mathematics as my life saver and guidance, since I was not only able to recovery with the help of mathematics but also guided me to my current career pathway.

The US Constitution is the backbone of the USA and who we are. That is the minimum distinguishable rule our ancestors used to differentiate human society from those of animals. During past decades, various incidents, such as United States Vs. Helaman Hansen attacks the human civil rights listed by the US Constitution. Last year, when I lived in Foggy Bottom, D.C. I had a chance to see and encounter how many rallies and protests happened to protect civil rights. Before that period, I was an individual who never thought about civil rights due to being so busy keeping myself up with education and depression. However, such as Helaman Hansen, or pro-anti-life case, I understand that each individual has his/her point of view so that individuals can agree or disagree with each case's statements. However, in either case, human civil rights should have been protected. Therefore, I joined rallies to hear each side of my opinions, help myself understand the issues, and stand up for human civil rights. Thus, even though it was only two years of my thirty years of lifetime, the period was such a life-changing time for me, and it opened my eyes to understand the importance of civil rights and how many people stand and will stand with me. Continuously looking forward, but in mutually benefiting ways: After I moved to Texas from Washington, D.C., the continuity of caring for civil rights was one of my most important aspects. I applied to be a member of the Texas Civil Right Project. I participated in local Toastmasters and Johns Hopkins negotiation courses to ensure I could efficiently persuade others to join the project with me. But, I am not willing to be a radical activist, which my sister was. I looked up to my sister, an LGBTQ icon of South Korea, and supported her civil rights movement actions. However, when she became too radical, she refused to hear any counterarguments and considered evil and ignorant actions to debate with her. She had outbursts and refused to discuss or converse with my parents but sued our parents to take a property my parents purchased as an inheritance. After the incident, I witnessed how awful an experience not only me and my parents but my sister had to go through due to the radicalistic of the action. From there, I set up my goal to be a civil rights activist who refuses to be a radical but a negotiator and mediator. I am continuously looking forward to meeting the Pareto Line of each counterparty. I do understand my pathway will be slower than radical activists' actions, but it will benefit the whole community by meeting the mutually benefiting Pareto goods.

Education has various meanings and aspects of human nature; education is the ultimate form of investment and a lifesaver. While working as a soldier in the US Army, I got injured and ended up permanently disabled. Due to my disability, I had to drop off from my Pharmacy career and dived into a severe depression with repeating suicidal thoughts. Education is the ultimate form of investment: As an academic education, you are only required to do the bare minimums, attend classes, do assignments, and spend time studying to pass courses and get the degree. However, due to completing the education, the returns are massive. Individuals get awards with globally recognizable degrees, more comprehensive career pathways options, higher initial wages, and social reputations. That is why I continuously look for any chance of further academic or not education. When I was in the Army, during my pharmacy career and did not even think about joining the Mathematics or Business field, I had chances to attend certificate courses for financial management, actuary, general fund enterprise business program, data analytics, and contracting officers courses. Even my team criticized me for wasting time on unnecessary certificates and courses. However, these licenses and certificates helped enormously when I tried to enter a business and economic career five years later. Some might say that the financial costs are too high to eat up all the benefits, and I agree that the tuition is getting out of the hands, but at the same time, there are various ways to coup with education; Grants, Scholarships, Loans, and Stipends. Also, even when the person gets a massive loan due to education purposes, many career fields and companies are offering various tuition repayment programs to employees. Therefore, I still believe that education is the ultimate form of investment with low risk and high return. Continuously educating, I could open up my limitation of the job offered in the pharmacy field. By graduating with a 3.53 GPA from my undergraduate, I could start with two higher ranks, GS-7 level, when I joined the federal agencies. Education is my life saver: The best way to avoid suicidal thoughts and cure depression is to keep yourself occupied and busy. I had and still have severe depression issues when I got permanently injured from the military service and had to drop off from the pharmacy field. However, after I decided to rejoin the college, I kept myself highly occupied with a plan of finishing a four-year B.S. with a minor degree within two years while maintaining various extracurriculars and volunteering; I had no time to have negative thoughts. Also, education helps individuals to restore and develop self-esteem. When an individual goes over education, there are bare minimum tasks the individual must accomplish, and doing those bare minimum provides the individual with the feeling of accomplishment. This is just like in the army cultural; it emphasizes the need to keep everything in standard, even the bedding, and to keep those standardize policies requires minimum efforts of individuals but still guarantees the feeling of accomplishment when even those tiny tasks are completed. Therefore, with this cumulative accomplishment, I am restoring my self-esteem.

The AAPI culture is the baseline and foundation of who I am now. I am a self-immigrant Korean-American, via joining the U.S. Army. I spent 1992 to 2008 solely in South Korea and was raised in the AAPI culture of South Korea. The discipline, integrity, respect, and various aspects of daily AAPI culture matched the U.S. military's cultures and helped me better fit the unique military society. Furthermore, my excellence in assisting others from the AAPI culture formed better me to fit in the public sector while working for the Office of Personnel Management, Small Business Administrate, and Beaura of Labor Statistics, and be excellent at assisting the public. As a result, OPM's director even awarded me the "Certificate of Excellence." Also, as a Korean idiom of "칠전팔기:Falling seven times, stand up eight times." It enabled me to pursue my dream and stand up stronger whenever I fell. During my military career, I got injured and received permanent disables, which led me to drop off from the Pharmacy career and have severe depression issues. Despite those dark eras, with my AAPI cultural background, I stood up repeatedly until I finally got back on my feet. I pursued a new career by rejoining the College, finished four years of education in just two years, and earned B.S. in Mathematics and a minor in Statistics with a 3.53 GPA. I continuously looked for and worked for various jobs, and still got care for my depression and disabled. Due to my AAPI cultural background, it was possible not to give up. As described earlier, the integrity and discipline aspects of AAPI's cultural background also made me a better leader. Simply doing the right things when no one is observing or supervising you at that point, is one of the major aspects of Korean culture. Possibly all Korean males have military experiences due to mandatory enlistments and received life-changing lessons regarding the importance of being discipline and keeping integrity, which later they implicated in their families. I got promoted to squad leader in the Army with integrity and discipline, and service excellence made me an award from the OPM's director. Also, from the BLS experience, my supervisor recognized me as the best new employee and even wrote references. During my Pearson experience, my supervisor promoted me twice just within a month and made me a leader and work as a director. Even though I am self-immigrated and living in the USA with U.S. citizenship, my AAPI background helped me better fit into the societies and careers, spared my life and my career when I hit the bottom of my life due to medical and career-related, but keep trying to come back as the idiom of 칠전팔기. Moreover, those aspects of AAPI culture enabled me to recognize myself as a better leader. Therefore, even though I became a US citizen more than a decade now and spent more than half of my life time in the US cultural ways, the cultural background of South Korea, where I was born and raised helped me in various aspects.

2017, I felt the sky was falling, and everything was collapsing when I heard about my sister's death. She used to be the most outstanding support and inspirator I had. Unfortunately, I could not put myself into one piece and let myself fall into the darkest abyss. However, later, with SGT. Brophy's help. I let her live in my heart and soul and push myself into challenges until I overcome the loss. She was a doctor in South Korea, and she was why I decided to join the PharmD program, even though I was not too fond of biology. In the program's fifth year, I heard that my sister was gone forever. I was not able to put myself together. I lost interest in education, love, friendship, physical activities, everything. I was constantly thinking about ending my life too. At that moment, my Army unit's squad leader, SGT. Brophy realized something was unusual to me. He decided to drive a few hours to my lonely apartment, yelled, and cried for me. Then, I realized that too many people care about me and worry about me. However, I was not able to cure my sadness alone. So, I decided to drop out of the PharmD program, even though I was in the fifth year of the six-year program. Then, I called SGT. Brophy and I informed him that I needed help to fix myself. We decided to walk to the nearest E.R., declared that I was going over some suicidal thoughts, and asked for assigned to a mental facility. After a few months, I was discharged from the facility. From there, I decided to push myself as hard as possible. I applied to Penn State University and finished four years of B.S. courses in Math major with a stat minor in just two years. After that, to provide all the helps I received from the unit and SGT. Brophy, back to society, I decided to refuse the high paycheck for working as an actuary in the private sector but join the Federal Agency. At the same time, I enrolled part-time in the Johns Hopkins MBA program. The mission/goal-driven plan makes me keep moving forward. I still miss my biggest ally, my sister. That is why I keep pushing myself to the limit to forget about the incident and focus on my goal, helping the public. I am still working hard to replace the memories of my sister with other positive experiences and me. Moreover, I still need medication to assist in overcoming the sadness. However, I will be a better person who can be the best role model to inspire others. Therefore, when I meet my sister again, I can proudly say that she and I made the world a little better place.
