I have always wanted to help out patients who are in need during their process of healing and offer as much support as possible in the hospital. My passion for nursing sparked when I had to take care of my grandmother when she couldn't take care of herself after a terrible fall. During my second semester of junior year in early 2023, my 89-year-old grandmother collapsed and was transported via ambulance to the hospital. She fractured her pelvis and two ribs. Once discharged, my family had to actively take care of her until she fully recovered. Throughout the semester, I would look after her when she used the restroom, check her blood pressure, make sure she was eating , and help her with some exercises while my mom worked the evening shift and my brother would come back from pharmacy school. I made sure she was entertained with Spanish television shows and kept her occupied. This has caused me to fall behind in many ways. I had many assignments and Internal Assessments due for my IBDP classes. I wasn't getting much sleep and it affected my performance in the morning for the Junior Reserves Officer Training Corps. However, I was able to manage my time through this experience and my grades did not drop significantly from January to March. After her recovery, I was offered to be in-charge of my local high school blood drive for the JROTC program for the month of February and May of 2024. I learn about team work and leadership to make sure the blood drive was going well for cadets and the students who volunteer to donate blood. I made sure cadets were taught on what to do for their job at the blood drive like the sign up table, snack table, and hydration table for those who donated blood. This experience has strengthened my perseverance and endurance. This was a hard time when I had to manage school and family, but I am glad I was able to persevere by continuing to get good grades and ensuring my grandmother could stay home and heal. I knew that my grandmother needed to get the best recovery for her age. I have been inspired to pursue my career in the U.S. Army as a commission officer in the medical field. I want to become a military nurse to help veterans and soldiers who have been injured. This country offers so many opportunities for those who work hard and stay committed. I think what I can learn from my experience with my grandmother is that it is important to make sure your patients are in a safe and caring environment during a recovery in the hospital. In a leadership position in the army, I want to make sure all medical care workers and I are working as a team to make we can do our best to give our patients a positive experience. Nursing does require discipline and committed to help those are in need in the hospital, regardless of who they are. Nursing will be a journey with positive and negatives experiences, but it is a journey I am willing to committed.
