Bio

I have enjoyed drawing since I was a little boy. I enjoyed drawing cartoon characters from some of the shows I watched growing up. For the longest time, I was pretty much self-taught by watching YouTube videos of some of my favorite artists. As I got a little older, my parents sent me to a local art school during some of my free time. Over the years, I have learned to paint in the traditional sense and create digital art as well. Now that I am in college, my goal is to get a degree in Illustration. I was fortunate enough to be accepted to the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), one of the top art schools in the country. To achieve my goal of working for a company like the New Yorker, I will need to attain at least a bachelor's degree in art illustration. As mentioned earlier, my professional goal is to work for The New Yorker or a similar organization. My personal goal is to continue to do commissioned artwork. This allows me to create artwork for individuals. I also plan to instruct others when time permits. I really enjoy teaching art to those that are interested. As an artist, I always seek to engage the community with my work. Whether it is a piece for a business or an individual, I want to make sure my work sparks conversation and inspires viewers. The goal of my art is to uplift the communities that they serve. I want my artwork to leave a visual statement that speaks for itself.

Yasuke was a black samurai who fought for the Japanese warlord Oda Nobunaga in the late-16th century. The lineage is vague, but it is assumed that he was originally from Mozambique and brought to Japan as a slave by Portuguese traders. Yasuke’s life is less lucid, but he eventually met Oda Nobunaga, impressed with his power and combat ability. During this period, Yasuke quickly progressed through Nobunaga’s army to become a loyal retainer and samurai. He was a great soldier renowned for his allegiance and bravery on the battlefield. The fact that Yasuke was a black man in Japan at the time was, of course, unusual, and he attracted much attention and fascination among Japanese citizens. For Yasuke to be immortalized as a samurai shows his martial ability and prowess in battle, as well as his capacity to fit into an unfamiliar culture. In spite of prejudice and distrust from his ethnic background, Yasuke managed to earn the admiration and regard of his peers by his behavior and commitment to serving Nobunaga. What led to my Yasuke artwork is a desire to acknowledge and present blackness and diversity historically. I am an African American artist who is interested in pursuing and reporting on narratives such as Yasuke’s that are less commonly known or understood in the popular media and art world. Creating Yasuke’s portrait as a samurai and also using it to highlight the power, perseverance, and self-respect of black men in history helps to bring about a different and inclusive art world. My goal is to debunk stereotypes and assumptions about black artists and creators and to encourage others to celebrate their own cultural heritage and identity. The African American art in Atlanta, an urban hub of black culture and creativity, has the potential to define its identity. From music and dance to the arts, literature, and visual arts, Atlanta’s black artists have played a vital part in creating a new cultural context, diversifying the artistic realm. I am a student at Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) in Atlanta, Georgia. I’m excited to belong to this vibrant, dynamic community where creativity and innovation are embraced and nurtured. I have been inspired by the history and heritage of black culture in Atlanta, and I try to incorporate my background and experiences into my art. Conclusion: Yasuke’s black samurai is a great illustration of the power and resilience of contrarians and contrarians. My drawing of Yasuke is a memorial to him and an invocation to black history. But I am also proud of my race and my culture, and I think that Black art needs to be celebrated here and in other places in Atlanta as part of a multiracial aesthetic that is all about beauty and all the colors of the human condition.
Joe Gilroy "Plan Your Work, Work Your Plan" Scholarship
My aim as an illustration student at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) right now is to graduate with a strong portfolio in order to move into the art industry. But my dream is more than personal success - I want to be the owner and operator of a free art school in a less-than-ideal community. This mission has a lot to do with my love for teaching art and being a good community servant. Education is in my DNA, with the majority of my extended family being in education. To do so, I’ve mapped out a step-by-step roadmap to get there. To begin with, once I’m done with SCAD, I’m going to get my hands dirty in the industry, at a gallery or art studio. It will not only let me further work as an artist, but it will also give me some practical tips on how a art business should be run. During that time, I’ll be doing some research in underprivileged communities where art education isn’t the priority. These studies will include learning what these communities need, what is and isn’t available to teach art, and who or what might provide allies/partners for the free art school. After enough time has passed and a lot of research, I will be able to start organizing the free art school. It will be by finding a location for the school, procuring materials and technology, recruiting art teachers, and crafting a curriculum that is relevant to the community. Resources: Building a free art school will take a lot of time and money. Obtaining a site for the school will be the most important and expensive part of the project. The school will also have to get art equipment, supplies and curriculum for the children to use. My beginning budget will begin around $25,000 a year for rent and supplies. The free art school, as I will seek to fund it, is not purely by grant, but rather by donation and, possibly, a partnership with local businesses or organizations that also believe in arts education. It will be very important to develop a specific budget so that we can see if it is financially possible for the project and that we have enough to keep the school going. When this plan is implemented also needs to be timed. It will be important to develop a plan of when everything is due (which milestones and dates are for each part of the project). This will allow us to make it all go efficiently and have the free art school opening for the public in the first place. Lastly, being able to consider all possible routes will be key to making this plan work. This could include partnering with other community agencies, seeking support from people who have run education programs, and always checking in and updating the program as the community changes. Finally, establishing and running a free art school in a marginalized community will be a long-term project that will take time, planning, and collaboration. Having a very specific roadmap in place with the resources, budget, timing, and all routes to succeeding, I know I can accomplish this and impact the lives of more aspiring artists out there.
    Leave A Legacy Always Scholarship
My love for drawing and creating art started when I was young. It began with a passion and fascination for reading comic books and watching animated shows and movies. Since I did not have any local art schools in my community to go to, I learned how to draw by watching some of my favorite artists on YouTube, such as Jorge Jimenez, Marco Checchetto, and Dan Mora, all comic book artists. Since then, art has always been my passion, calling, and way of connecting with the world around me. I began by drawing and painting on traditional mediums, then as I got older, I progressed in the world of creating art on digital devices, primarily on an Apple iPad, the best gift my supportive parents could have ever given me. I have set ambitious goals for myself and my future career path. Currently, I am majoring in illustration while minoring in sneaker design, and I am actively involved in three student clubs on campus. My involvement in various SCAD student clubs has given me a strong sense of community involvement and has fueled my passion for giving back. My passion lies in creating editorial art for a company like the New Yorker as a profession and painting murals for local communities as a way to give back. Additionally, coming from a low socioeconomic area, my long-term goal is to start an art school in a predominantly minority area where there is a lack of funding. As a junior at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) in Atlanta, Georgia, digital artwork and sneaker design is a part of my coursework, but more importantly, I love to paint and create murals. Unfortunately, it’s not a part of the curriculum, and it’s a lifelong passion that fuels my aspiration to reach beyond my academic career. I’m one of the few in my family not to pursue an education career, and education is deeply rooted in my family. I think, in some way, there's a part of me that likes teaching, too. Outside of my academic and career goals as an editorial illustrator, I have decided to use my art to give back to underserved and underrepresented communities. My long-term goals are to paint the city with positivity, create murals around the city, and open an art-free school for the underprivileged. I want to use my art to not only satisfy my passion, but also contribute to the development of myself and my community! I currently serve as the president of the Illustration Club, and I am also an active member of the SCAD Atlanta Skate Club and Black Student Association. Although most of my academics involve creating digital artwork, I'm very passionate about painting as well. I especially like and enjoy painting indoor and outdoor murals. While in high school, I painted some of my fellow senior parking spaces as parking spaces for teachers and other school staff members. I also have painted large murals for my high school and private businesses. In a world that values material accomplishments over spiritual values, art can be a source of empowerment for individuals and communities. By empowering people to give voice to their stories and struggles, art can allow expression of what might not otherwise be heard by those groups. Murals communicate transformation and restoration. They have the power to change the energy of a place and what things are looked upon in that space. If we have the capability to paint a mural and change the aesthetic of a space, and then, through the act of creating, instill hope, and subsequently, the community members have hope when they see the mural, then that energy might be carried into their local community and make them feel better about the space around them. Creating murals for the community and bringing people together through art in cities is my personal mission. Murals should not be considered just as paintings on walls but as stories, communication, and points for interaction. As we begin to adorn our urban spaces with colors, we create a collective story that lifts and inspires our residents and aids in urban redevelopment and multicultural growth. Art is one of the most important tools of education and the development of communities because it helps to communicate, learn, and grow. Art and art-integrated education supports learning by helping students conceive of challenging questions, collect data, and draw conclusions. Art supports emotional development, as well as cultural understanding, through appreciation and understanding. If art can find its way into every curriculum, students might become more engaged, their needs be met in varied ways, relationships be strengthened, cultural understanding flourish, and community being built through active engagement. I want to re-emphasize the role of art in the education and the development of communities because I believe that art plays a significant role in promoting the development of different communities and individuals. It should be made accessible to people at all levels of learning. An art-free school is somewhat of a misnomer but is meant to emphasize the ‘free’ as in this instance. By creating a school that takes away opportunities to learn from the disadvantaged, there will be some sense of closure to whatever gap in learning art that they were deprived of by providing enough resources and opportunities for the underrepresented youth to use and hone their artistic abilities. Within this type of institution, the underprivileged wouldn’t be oppressed by money as they would get to experience a safe, artistic haven that would ignite their artistic passions and desires. This is something that I would love to aspire to and achieve in the future – that is my way of creating a haven that stimulates the artistic dreams of the underprivileged and that art isn’t exclusively for the privileged. It’s for all of us. Painting, as visual art and a universal medium without barriers of speech and literacy, is an incredibly potent tool for social change. As a visual artist, I have the responsibility to use themes and imagery in my paintings to address issues of the social environment, deconstruct some of the stereotypes that exist, address issues of inclusivity and visibility in society, and use the medium to strengthen social awareness and advocacy for social change. In my capacity as a painter, I can participate in these causes by bringing the medium into the social platform and representing varied forms of social experiences. Pursuing art outside of my course is not just something that I have a passion for but rather a responsibility because I have a desire to contribute meaningfully to the various platforms that would assist, in my own way, in creating avenues for the dreams of young artists, empowering communities, spreading positivity, and creating a space for the arts to be used as a tool to spur much-needed social change. My long-term goals align with the broader community vision of upliftment and self-development as well; thus, in using my talents for the public and social good, I seek to create a symbiotic relationship with my career aspirations and the needs of the community where I grew up through the arts and ultimately embedding art and society.

From my interests to my skills, and from my future career to the way I relax, video games have always been there to contribute to my life. I’ve been gaming since I was a kid, and it has only become a bigger part of my life cycle over time.  One of the most impactful ways that video games have affected my life is that it fosters my passion for art and design. I was first introduced to these colorful, dynamic worlds through video games such as Mario Kart and Lego Batman, and I was astounded by the worlds that developers had created, and at how much of this was a space for creativity and imagination. This led me to want to explore art and illustration as a vehicle for my own expression.  One personal anecdote describing the positive influence of video games on my life would be the video game design summer school sessions I attended at Southern Methodist University (SMU) the summer directly after middle school. My personal experience here was learning how to design my own video games and code them from the bottom up. Perhaps the most memorable video game we produced in this particular setting was a Minecraft game where we were given the ability to customize a world, add building blocks, and code in game events that made the game both challenging and fun for the players.  Flash-forward to the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) in Atlanta, where I now study illustration while minoring in sneaker design. My gaming hobby has shaped my style, allowing my illustrations to echo the world of game design – from the dazzling, otherworldly backdrops to dynamic and extraordinary character designs.  During the process, there were lots of glitches, which I had to create workarounds for, and mistakes that I had to troubleshoot. With every trial and error, I had to use critical thinking and problem-solving. There were so many things that I didn’t think of or plan for, or just plain hadn’t anticipated that it made me want to say, ‘I’ve had enough!’ So many times I thought I was almost done, but there was always more to do. So at the end of my game, I was so relieved. I was so proud of myself for doing something. I like that can combine my love of art and my love of gaming.  But video games have taught me skills other than an interest in art – I’ve learnt how to think strategically, how to communicate with others for a common goal and how to deal with unexpected events. These skills are being used in my everyday life, as well as at school. I now participate in group discussions more than I used to – and the skills I’ve learnt from Fortnite have helped me in these situations. Video game play also helps me relax and stress reduction when I’m not studying, creating art and participating in student club activities.  Finally, video games have inspired me to pursue my creative goals by making me become a better artist, storyteller, and team-player. My illustration and sneaker design are better than they would have been if I had never played video games. Video gameplay helps me find enjoyment in the experience of drawing and designing. Overall, my life has been greatly influenced by video games, and they have made me who I am today. Playing video games has improved my creativity, social skills, as well as my problem-solving skills. It is due to video games that I have developed an interest in and pursuit of a career in art.
Diane Amendt Memorial Scholarship for the Arts
My earliest dream of being an artist was to draw comic books for my favorite heroes. As there were no art schools in my neighborhood, I taught myself to draw by watching content on YouTube from some of my favorite artists, including the comic book authors Stan Lee and Jorge Jimenez. This was my primary outlet for artistic education growing up. To be an artist is to be influenced by nearly anything and everything, and it’s impossible for me to focus on what or who had the biggest impact on me. But for the sake of a list, I give big props to the artists whose work I grew up consuming while I was flipping through the comics I was reading as a teenager. My love for art and illustration deepened further when I became a fan of Marvel Comics and tried to capture the storytelling from the legend Stan Lee and many other incredible comic-book artists. I was engrossed in my drawing pad for days on end, drawing characters that I fell in love with. His stories made me want to be a better artist and be more creative. His approach towards telling stories had a deep impact on me through his belief in the craft of storytelling, and how it can build a connection among people, inspire change and spread positivity. While attending the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), where I’m studying to become an art illustration major, I keep Stan Lee’s contributions to bring diversity and inclusivity to comic books close to me and apply them to my work. I dream of utilizing my talent to advance social change, to make the world more accessible, and to empower all kinds of people to follow their hearts. I am really honored to serve as president of the SCAD Illustration Club this year, as it shows my dedication to creating a community in SCAD that is full of kindness, generosity, and spirit toward students’ individuality and creative drive. I will take inspiration from Stan Lee as I aim to create a community of opportunities where my fellow artists can grow by showcasing their work and gaining insight. Collaborating with others will open up new opportunities to explore artistic methods and creative ideas. I hope to be inspired by my peers and professors in SCAD. Working with others will allow me to expand my artistic craft in practice and style, technique, and medium. I will try my best to make art as good as I can. Therefore, I consider Stan Lee a pivotal influence in shaping everything that I have done and wish to continue to do within my career. Stan Lee can be seen as one of the key influencers in my journey as a black art illustrator who strives to create visually stimulating and socially influencing images and characters. His legacy of being creative and showing ingenuity and diversity has played an essential role in the type of artist that I am and the goals that I aspire to as I pursue my dreams of being an illustrator, community advocate, and mentor to the next generation of artists. In his quest for arts that would uplift and empower the world, Stan Lee has always believed that art and storytelling create a powerful platform that allows everyone to identify and connect with a common shared humanity. Even in my humble capacity as an artist, I endeavor to make Stan Lee's dreams a reality in my little corner of the globe.
John Young 'Pursue Your Passion' Scholarship
I have always loved illustration as a form of storytelling and have always been struck by the way that images can communicate feeling and ideas in a way that words cannot. As a college student, I am interested in editorial illustration and the relationship between art and journalism. I believe that editorial illustration can have real power when it focuses on and draws attention to political and social issues that are difficult to talk about – not only by starting conversations but by changing people’s perceptions of them. I considered studying art illustration with a concentration in editorial illustration because I consider it an important way to use my drawing talents to speak for those who cannot, to bring light to the marginalized and create awareness of cultural issues that go unnoticed, to make social justice a priority and foster introspection on topics that affect the world. Speaking truth to power is one of the most important things for me as an editorial illustrator, because it’s my job to bring attention to people who feel underrepresented or underprivileged. I also want to use art to amplify their voices and help them tell their stories as much as possible. As the president of the Illustration Club at SCAD, I’ve already had the chance to work with fellow artists and activists to produce artwork that brings attention to topics such as racism, gender inequality, and environmental degradation. These experiences have only made me more determined to use art as a tool for social change. I chose to minor in sneaker design because I firmly believe that fashion and artwork hand in hand. After all, a sneaker is a form of expression and self-identity. Through studying sneaker design, I would like to keep my artistic repertoire fresh and come up with new ways to fuse art and design. Overall, my aspiration is to think and work globally but go back to my community and give back. Having an educator and first responder as parents, they instilled in me a desire to serve others. Art education, for example, empowers and provides a voice for those who may not have access to conventional academic facilities. I hope to use my skills to teach art and provide the youth from underprivileged and underserved communities with a voice and encourage them to express themselves. To summarize, I made a decision to major in art illustration with a concentration on editorial illustration, in order to use my art as a tool for social change and advocacy. My work will be an eye-opener for people, to shine a light on the serious social issues that exist, and to provide materials to open up the minds of vulnerable, marginalized communities and highlight their voices. I believe that by combining my passion for art with my community service, I can create a reality in my art that will someday bring about a more inclusive and equitable world for all.
Devin Chase Vancil Art and Music Scholarship
At a very young age, my love for drawing and creating art stems from my great affection and motivation for reading comic books and watching my favorite animated shows and movies. Since there was no art school around in my community, what I did out of passion was to watch my favorite artists on YouTube. Some of them include Jorge Jimenez, Marco Checchetto, and Dan Mora; these are some of the comic book artists that I included on my watchlist, and I loved watching them draw. Ever since then, art has always been a passion, a calling, and a way of feeling immersed in the world around me. I am currently following my passion at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) in Atlanta. I am a very good student in school too. I’ve made it into the Dean’s List in the fall semester of my freshman year, and I have maintained that status to this day. Academically, I think that there are no obstacles for me as my goal is to follow my passion and be a successful student in that field. My thinking process has allowed me to view any information in my courses creatively and artistically. That has made it more fun to take in the information, but also, I have been able to relate to my courses analytically, synthetically, and holistically to provoke more creativity. This semester, I’m a junior at SCAD and serving as president of the Illustration Club. I am also deeply involved in the Black Student Association. I could use my creative thinking in these organizations to create projects and ideas to follow. I believe art is important for society because of this reason. We often forget that art is a universal language for communication. Any medium of art can convey a feeling, an idea, or an experience that no number of words can ever do. Art is the flame that ignites a conversation between individuals. It is the mirror that challenges your ideologies and biases. It is the bridge that helps us understand each other better. Art and its creators connect people at a standard level of humanity, regardless of where they belong. Art is an opportunity for self-rediscovery in a society that divides and misunderstands itself. Furthermore, art plays a significant role in maintaining our culture and history. We learn about different societies, traditions, and values from art; therefore, it represents reality from the past but still reflects the present. Art promotes the delight of diversity and the appreciation of our heritage. Art is also a visual memory of humankind; through it, we can visualize past and present moments. For me, art also becomes a pure experience form of therapy, a way to express myself, to translate thought, emotion, and experience into a visual language that can impact others and leave a mark. Art can stir emotions, be a force for change, make people think, and move them. I want to resonate with the world and communicate with it, share with others my personal view of the world, and act in this way as a catalyst for their own form of creativity. To conclude, I see art in my life not only as a hobby or a profession but as a vocation and a way of life. Arts transformative power and the ability to inspire, connect, and create a difference. I hope as my journey as an artist continues, allowing my creative talents to spark change and excitement in others. Art, for me in my life, is a voice, a purpose, and a gift.
    LeBron James Fan Scholarship
I have been a fan of LeBron James for as long as I can remember. From his incredible talent on the basketball court to his generosity off the court, LeBron has always been a role model for me. I admire his work ethic, dedication to his craft, and commitment to positively impacting the world around him. One of the main reasons I am a fan of LeBron is his extraordinary philanthropic work. LeBron, a dominant force in the NBA, has used his platform to give back to his community in a truly inspiring way. He has established the LeBron James Family Foundation, which is dedicated to education and youth development. The foundation's most significant achievement is the I PROMISE School in Akron, Ohio, a beacon of hope for at-risk children, providing them with education and support. LeBron's outspoken advocacy for social justice is another reason for my admiration. He has fearlessly used his platform to address issues of racial inequality and police brutality, proving that he's more than just a basketball player. His courage to speak out and inspire change in society is admirable and empowers us all to use our voices for positive change. LeBron's journey to becoming a billionaire with only a high school education is a testament to his determination and resilience. His success is a powerful reminder that hard work, dedication, and perseverance can lead to greatness, regardless of background. His business ventures off the court, such as his partnership with Nike and investments in media and entertainment, are a testament to his entrepreneurial spirit and drive for excellence in all aspects of his life. His story is truly inspiring and a testament to the power of resilience. Despite my admiration for LeBron, I do not believe he is basketball's Greatest of All Time (GOAT). That title, in my opinion, belongs to Michael Jordan. Jordan's six championships, incredible scoring ability, and impact on basketball make him the greatest player ever to play the sport. His ability to dominate games, his competitiveness, and his influence on the game's global popularity are unmatched. While LeBron has had an impressive career with multiple championships and MVP awards, he has yet to reach the same level of success as Jordan. Jordan's killer instinct, competitiveness, and ability to perform under pressure set him apart from other players in the NBA's history. His impact on the game goes beyond statistics, as he has inspired generations of basketball players to strive for greatness and push themselves to be their best. In conclusion, my admiration for LeBron James is rooted in his philanthropy work, advocacy for social justice, and inspiring journey to success. However, I do not believe that he is the GOAT in basketball, as that title rightfully belongs to Michael Jordan. LeBron's undeniable impact on the game and society is a testament to his greatness. His influence has reshaped the game and inspired a new generation of players. However, Jordan's legacy as the greatest player remains unmatched.
    Bear Fan Scholarship
The Bear is one of my favorite TV series, streaming on Hulu. So much so that I created a piece of artwork for one of my college courses featuring Carmy and Sydney. In my ideal ending for ‘The Bear,’ I envision a dramatic and emotional conclusion that satisfyingly and realistically wraps up the character arcs based on the developments throughout the series. Carmy, the ambitious but flawed chef, ultimately sees his dreams of owning a successful restaurant crumble before his eyes. His ego and toxic behavior towards his colleagues ultimately lead to his downfall, as he loses The Bear due to mounting debts and his inability to work cooperatively with others. This is a harsh lesson for Carmy, who must confront his shortcomings and reevaluate his priorities. Though filled with failures, his journey teaches him the value of humility and collaboration, which he carries forward in his future endeavors. On the other hand, Richie would rise above The Bear's chaos and eventually succeed as a head chef at a renowned restaurant. His dedication, hard work, and natural talent would propel him to new heights in the culinary world, allowing him to fulfill his potential and become a respected figure in the industry. Seeing Richie achieve his goals and overcome his challenges at The Bear upscale restaurant would be a rewarding and heartwarming conclusion to his storyline, making the audience feel satisfied and content with the ending. The determined and passionate cook Sydney would make the difficult decision to leave The Bear and pursue her path in the culinary world. Despite the setbacks and obstacles, Sydney’s resilience and unwavering commitment to her craft led her to open her restaurant, where she showcased her unique talents and established herself as a talented chef. This ending would not only highlight Sydney’s growth and transformation throughout the series but also inspire the audience with her evolution from a struggling cook to a confident and successful entrepreneur, making them feel proud and inspired by her journey. As for The Bear itself, I imagine it closing its doors for good, symbolizing the end of an era for the characters who once called it home. The emotional impact of The Bear’s demise, a bittersweet reminder of the characters' challenges and hardships, adds depth to the ending and resonates with the reader's emotional connection to the series. This emotional resonance with the audience is a key element in creating a satisfying ending. Overall, this ending would satisfy me as a fan because it provides closure for the characters’ arcs and allows them to confront their flaws and mistakes. More importantly, it shows how they learn from these experiences, ultimately finding redemption and fulfillment in their journeys. This emphasis on the characters' growth and the series' key themes of resilience, growth, and the transformative power of the culinary world reinforces the series' message and leaves the audience feeling content and satisfied with the character's fulfillment.

As a child, I found solace in reading comic books and watching animated shows, marveling at the intricate details and storytelling that went into creating these visual masterpieces. Without access to any local art schools, I turned to YouTube to learn from some of my favorite artists. My journey towards becoming an artist has been a winding road filled with challenges and obstacles, but my passion and determination have carried me through. My enrollment at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) in Atlanta, Georgia, has been a dream come true, allowing me to immerse myself in a supportive and creative environment where I can further refine my skills and push the boundaries of my creativity. As a junior at SCAD, I have set ambitious goals for myself and my future career. Currently, I am majoring in illustration while minoring in painting, and I am actively involved in three student clubs on campus. My involvement in clubs such as the SCAD Illustration Club, the SCAD Black Student Association, and the SCAD Skate Club has given me a strong sense of community involvement and has fueled my passion for giving back. My goals are driven by a desire to use my skills and passion for art to positively impact communities that may have different resources or opportunities than others. In pursuit of my goals, I have immersed myself in the art community at SCAD, actively participating in student clubs that have allowed me to expand my skills, network with other artists, and gain valuable experience. Through my major in illustration, I have sharpened my ability to communicate ideas and tell stories through art visually. My minor in painting has given me a deeper understanding of color theory, composition, and technique, which I can apply to my future mural projects. My dream of creating art for a company like the New Yorker stems from a desire to reach a broad audience and make a meaningful impact through my artwork. The New Yorker is known for its thought-provoking illustrations and covers that spark conversation and provoke thought. Working for such a prestigious publication would be a career milestone and a platform to share my perspective and contribute to essential conversations through art. On a more personal level, painting murals for local communities is a way for me to give back and beautify public spaces while engaging with those who inhabit those areas. Art can inspire change, foster community, and uplift spirits. By creating murals in underserved neighborhoods, I hope to bring joy, hope, and a sense of pride to those who may not always see themselves represented in traditional art spaces. Looking ahead, my ultimate goal of starting an art school in a predominantly minority area is to create lasting change and empower future generations of artists. By providing access to quality art education, resources, and mentorship, I hope to nurture young talent, foster creativity, and bridge the gap in the arts for historically underserved communities.

As an artist, I have always been fascinated by the beauty and complexity of the world around us. From the intricate patterns found in nature to the vastness of the universe, I have always been drawn to the idea of understanding the mysteries surrounding us. This curiosity has driven me to create art reflecting my fascination with the natural world, such as my series of paintings inspired by the Fibonacci sequence. I seek knowledge and understanding to comprehend the intricacies of our existence better. In pursuing a degree in illustrative art, I've realized that art is about more than just creating visually engaging images. It's a powerful tool for communicating ideas and concepts that prompt thought and inspire change. As an artist, I firmly believe that we, as a society, must strive to understand the nature of our universe better. This understanding can guide us in making informed decisions about the future of our planet and the well-being of all living creatures. One concept that I'm deeply committed to in my artistic endeavors is interconnectedness. I firmly believe that everything in the universe is connected in some way. Acknowledging and respecting these connections, we can better understand the world around us. This interconnectedness is evident in the relationships between humans and nature, different cultures and societies, and even between the smallest particles in the universe. Through my artwork, I strive to promote unity and cooperation among all beings by exploring and highlighting these connections. For instance, in my series of paintings inspired by the Fibonacci sequence, I aim to show how this mathematical pattern, found in nature and the universe, connects all living things beautifully and harmoniously. Another idea that I am passionate about is the concept of mindfulness. In a world constantly bombarding us with distractions and information overload, it is vital to slow down and take the time to engage with the world around us. We can better understand ourselves and our place in the universe through mindfulness practices such as meditation and contemplation. By incorporating these practices into my artistic process, I want to create art that encourages others to take a moment to pause, reflect, and connect with the world in a more meaningful way. One key reason we must deepen our understanding of the universe is the vast array of mysteries and unanswered questions that exist within it. From the universe's origins to the workings of quantum mechanics, countless phenomena continue to challenge our current understanding. By delving deeper into these mysteries, we not only enhance our knowledge of the world around us but also push the boundaries of human knowledge and insight, a task of utmost urgency in our rapidly changing world. Furthermore, understanding the universe can have significant practical applications. Many scientific discoveries and technological advancements have stemmed from our efforts to understand natural phenomena. For example, our understanding of electromagnetism has led to the development of countless technologies that have revolutionized our world. By continuing to explore and unravel the mysteries of the universe, we can unlock new technologies and innovations that could benefit humanity in profound ways. For instance, a deeper understanding of the universe's structure and dynamics could lead to the development of more efficient energy sources or the ability to predict and mitigate natural disasters. To better understand the universe, employing a multidisciplinary approach that draws on various fields of science and technology is vital. For instance, combining the principles of physics, biology, chemistry, and engineering can offer a more holistic understanding of complex systems and phenomena. By taking a comprehensive approach, we can uncover connections and patterns that might not be readily apparent when studying individual disciplines in isolation. Additionally, fostering a culture of curiosity and collaboration among young people passionate about exploring the universe is essential. Encouraging the next generation of scientists and researchers to pursue their interests and embark on bold and ambitious projects can lead to exciting discoveries and breakthroughs. By providing resources, mentorship, and opportunities for young minds to engage with complex scientific problems, we can cultivate a vibrant and innovative scientific community driven by a shared passion for understanding the universe. Moreover, embracing and incorporating new technologies and methodologies into our quest to understand the universe is crucial. Advances in artificial intelligence, data science, and computational modeling can revolutionize our approach to scientific inquiry. By leveraging these technologies, we can analyze vast amounts of data, simulate complex systems, and make greater accuracy and precision predictions. One personal story that has shaped my worldview and inspired me to pursue a deeper understanding of the nature of our universe is a trip I took to the Grand Canyon. As I stood at the edge of the massive canyon, gazing out at the rock layers and the winding river below, I was struck by the sheer magnitude and beauty of the natural world. This experience profoundly influenced my art, leading me to create a series of paintings that capture the grandeur and complexity of the canyon. At that moment, I was filled with awe and wonder that I had never experienced before. It was as if I had been given a glimpse into the vastness of the universe, and it reminded me of how small and insignificant we are in the grand scheme of things. This experience at the Grand Canyon inspired me to explore all things' interconnectedness and seek a deeper understanding of the world around me. It motivated me to create art that reflects the beauty and complexity of nature and encourages others to contemplate their place in the universe. Through my artwork, I inspire others to look beyond the surface and to see the world in a new light, with a sense of wonder and curiosity that can lead to greater understanding and compassion. In conclusion, as an artist deeply passionate about understanding the mysteries of the universe, it's crucial that we, as a society, work together to comprehend the nature of our existence better. Through my artwork, which explores interconnectedness and mindfulness, I aim to promote unity and connection among all beings. My personal experiences, such as the transformative trip to the Grand Canyon, have inspired me to seek a deeper understanding of the world around me and create art that reflects the beauty and complexity of nature. I sincerely hope that by continuing to explore and communicate these ideas in my artwork, I can inspire others to engage with the world more meaningfully and profoundly.

Growing up as a young black male, I faced many challenges and struggles. My love for drawing and creating art blossomed during my childhood fascination with animated superheroes and comic books. I taught myself how to draw by watching my favorite artists on YouTube, such as Jorge Jimenez, Marco Checchetto, and Dan Mora, all renowned artists. Learning from them was my primary form of artistic education growing up, as there were no local art schools to attend. I spent hours studying their techniques, practicing their styles, and experimenting with my ideas. In high school, I felt isolated from my peers due to our differing interests, but my passion for art continued to grow. Despite facing mental anguish from bullying and teasing, I found solace in my loyal companion, Tyson, a dog my parents got me for emotional support and protection. Tyson was always there for me, offering comfort and unconditional love in my darkest moments. His presence helped me overcome difficult situations, such as confronting bullies at school and in my neighborhood. With Tyson by my side, I felt empowered to stand up for myself and walk away with dignity. One specific example is how Tyson helped me overcome a tricky situation in high school. I was walking home from the local market one day when a group of kids started taunting and harassing me, mocking my appearance and making derogatory comments. But then Tyson, sensing my distress, leaped to my defense. He barked fiercely at the bullies, and the kids scrambled to escape, taken aback by his sudden ferocity. At that moment, I knew I wasn't alone. Tyson had my back, standing up for me when I couldn't stand up for myself. His bravery and loyalty not only gave me the strength to hold my head high and walk away with dignity but also boosted my self-esteem. I felt empowered, knowing that I had a true friend who would always be there for me, no matter what. Growing up with a pet like Tyson profoundly impacted who I am today. He taught me the value of unconditional love, loyalty, and companionship, showing me that even in the darkest moments, there is always a flicker of light to guide me. Tyson's presence was a constant source of comfort and strength, helping me overcome my struggles with depression and bullying. His unwavering support and companionship helped me navigate difficult times and shaped my understanding of resilience and self-worth. I will forever be grateful for his presence in my life. My experiences with Tyson and overcoming adversity have shaped me into who I am today. As an up-and-coming artist majoring in art illustration at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), I am passionate about using my creativity to make a positive impact. I currently serve as president of SCAD Atlanta's Illustration Club and am an active member of the Black Student Association and Skate Club. My ultimate goal is to become an illustrative artist in digital marketing and advertising. I aspire to work for a significant literature organization like the New Yorker or Rolling Stone Magazine. In conclusion, my journey from being a young boy with a passion for drawing to being a determined artist at SCAD has been shaped by my experiences with art, adversity, and the unwavering support of Tyson. The biggest influence in my life has been the artist Jorge Jiminez, whose vibrant and unique art style inspired me to push the boundaries of traditional comic book practices. His ability to capture my favorite heroes in a way that challenged the norm resonated with me, forcing me to evolve my art style and strive for more innovative approaches in my work. As a black male college student who grew up in a household with limited income and a lower socioeconomic environment, I have faced unique challenges on my journey to higher education. From a young age, I was aware of the disparities in opportunities available to me compared to my peers from more privileged backgrounds. However, I refused to let these circumstances define me. Instead, I used them as fuel to propel me forward, often feeling isolated on campus, as many classmates could not relate to my experiences or understand my struggles outside of school. This resilience and determination, the driving forces behind my journey, are a testament to perseverance and overcoming adversity. Despite these challenges, I have worked hard to pursue my passion for art and illustration, using my creativity as a transformative force of self-expression and empowerment. Art has always been more than a hobby for me; it's been a lifeline. It has allowed me to channel my emotions and tell stories that reflect my identity and experiences as a black man. As I pursue a degree in Illustration with a concentration in advertising/publication, my goal is clear: I aspire to become an editorial illustrator for prominent magazines such as The New Yorker or Rolling Stone. This is not just a career path but a mission to challenge traditional practices in the field and push the boundaries of what editorial illustration can be. I dream of significantly impacting the industry, using my artistic skills to create visually striking and thought-provoking artwork. One key aspect that sets me apart as an artist is my use of color. I have a strong understanding of color theory and how different colors can harmonize or contrast. This knowledge allows me to create dynamic and visually appealing compositions that catch the viewer's eye and evoke emotions. My ability to use color innovatively and impactfully will be crucial in distinguishing my work from others in the field. As I graduate and enter the professional world, I will continue to push the boundaries of traditional practices in editorial illustration. By incorporating my unique approach to color and composition, I will create artwork that is not only visually striking but also tells a compelling story and engages the viewer on a deeper level. In conclusion, my artistic gift lies in my ability to use color innovatively and impactfully. Art has been a constant force in my life, shaping my dreams and aspirations from a tender age. My passion for visual arts was kindled by the animated characters of Sonic the Hedgehog, sparking a desire to create my unique illustrations and character designs. My kindergarten teacher took time to teach me how to draw Sonic the Hedgehog on the dry-erase board in our classroom after school sometimes on days that my mom was running late to pick me up. My fascination with drawing animated characters grew exponentially during this time in my childhood. Growing up with limited access to formal art training, I turned to online resources and YouTube tutorials to refine my skills and broaden my horizons. This self-taught approach has allowed me to explore various artistic techniques and styles, culminating in the publication of my artwork in a Fanbook featuring contributions from my social media followers last year. As I embark on my journey as an art illustrator, my aspirations transcend personal success. I am resolute in using my talent and creativity as a catalyst for social change and a platform for diversity and inclusion. I am driven to create art that illuminates pressing societal issues and ignites a spark in others, encouraging them to harness their talents for the betterment of society. With an unwavering commitment to my community, I aim to provide art education to underserved populations and adorn public spaces with murals that tell powerful stories, inspiring positive change. My path to achieving these goals is guided by a comprehensive plan that includes continuous skill refinement, a successful career in illustration, community contribution, and the encouragement of others to pursue their passions. As I recently completed my sophomore year at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), I am taking significant steps toward these objectives. Pursuing a degree in art illustration with a minor in painting, I have also been selected to serve as president of the SCAD Illustration Club, starting next fall as I begin my junior year. Additionally, my involvement in the SCAD Black Student Association and Skate Club allows me to forge connections, gain valuable experience, and acquire the skills necessary for success in my career. In a society where the benefits of video games are often overlooked, I believe they hold valuable lessons that can benefit individuals in various ways. Beyond the apparent benefits of teamwork and perseverance, video games have significantly developed my social skills, reflexes, and creativity. As an artist and an art student, I understand the importance of exploring different mediums and technologies to enhance storytelling and create immersive experiences. With technological advancements, such as artificial intelligence and digital art tools, the possibilities for creativity and innovation are endless. I am committed to incorporating these advancements into my future projects and ventures, adding a new dimension to my artwork and storytelling. One of my most ambitious projects is an animated movie that follows the story of two race car drivers, Bandit and Spider, who moonlight as precious jewel thieves. Despite their criminal activities, they are portrayed as heroes who give their riches to the less fortunate and underrepresented segments of society. This project allows me to combine my passion for art with my desire to advocate for social change and inspire others to act. Through detailed character development and intricate plot twists, I aim to keep viewers engaged and empathetic toward the protagonists' struggles and triumphs. This resilience and determination have been the driving forces behind my journey. Through my artwork, I aim to shed light on critical social issues, amplify the voices of marginalized communities, and inspire others to advocate for change. This commitment to using art as a tool for social change is deeply ingrained in my artistic journey. I have actively sought opportunities to engage with my community and positively impact campus through my involvement in student clubs and organizations at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) in Atlanta, including the SCAD Illustration Club and the SCAD Black Student Association. They have provided a sense of belonging and support and significantly contributed to my personal and professional development. These groups allow me to share my passion for art and have taught me the importance of teamwork, leadership, and community engagement. My identity as a member of an underrepresented minority population has greatly influenced my path in higher education and beyond. I am constantly aware of the barriers black artists face in gaining recognition and opportunities for their work. I am determined to challenge these inequalities by not only creating art that reflects my experiences and challenges societal norms but also by advocating for more diverse representation in the art world. I plan to use my platform as an artist to amplify other black artists' voices and create opportunities for them to showcase their work. I am committed to paving the way for future generations of artists who, like me, come from marginalized communities. I plan to give back to my community in specific ways. I intend to paint murals in local neighborhoods, especially underprivileged communities lacking access to art and cultural resources. By collaborating with local organizations, I plan to organize a series of workshops on digital illustration for high school students, a mentorship program for aspiring artists in collaboration with a local art gallery, and a public art project that involves community members in designing and painting a mural in a local park. These initiatives are not just about teaching art but about using art for personal growth, community engagement, and social change. My identity as a black male college student from a lower socioeconomic background has shaped my experiences, aspirations, and commitment to using art for empowerment and social justice. Despite my challenges, I am determined to overcome the barriers that stand in my way and make a meaningful impact on the world around me. Through dedication, perseverance, and a strong sense of purpose, I can achieve my goals and contribute to positive change in my community and beyond.

Plastic pollution has escalated into one of the most urgent environmental challenges of our era. Shockingly, more than 8 million tons of plastic waste infiltrate the world's oceans annually, inflicting severe damage on marine life and ecosystems. This isn't just an environmental threat but a direct risk to human health, as plastic debris can contaminate the soil and water supply with harmful chemicals. The issue of plastic pollution is indeed complex, but each of us holds the power to make a difference. A key strategy in our fight against plastic pollution is to curb our consumption of single-use plastics. These items, such as plastic bags, straws, and water bottles, contribute significantly to the plastic waste in our oceans. By making simple changes in our daily lives, like opting for reusable bags and water bottles, we can significantly reduce our plastic waste footprint. Another vital way to address plastic pollution is through recycling. Many plastics can be recycled and turned into new products, reducing the need for new plastic production. However, recycling rates for plastics are still relatively low, with only a small percentage of plastic waste being recycled. By increasing awareness about the importance of recycling and making it easier for people to recycle their plastic waste, we can help reduce the amount of plastic in our oceans. In addition to reducing consumption and increasing recycling, another vital way to tackle plastic pollution is through clean-up efforts. Organizations and individuals around the world are working to remove plastic waste from beaches, rivers, and oceans, preventing it from harming marine life. By volunteering for clean-up efforts or supporting organizations working to clean up plastic pollution, we can all make a difference in the fight against plastic pollution. I am committed to doing my part to reduce plastic pollution and protect the environment. One way I would like to contribute to solving the problem of plastic pollution is by reducing my use of single-use plastics. I have already made changes in my daily life, such as using a reusable water bottle and bringing my bags to the grocery store to minimize the amount of plastic waste I generate. I also plan to increase my efforts to recycle plastic waste. I will adequately sort and dispose of plastic waste to ensure it is recycled and turned into new products. Additionally, I will continue to educate myself and others about the importance of recycling and reducing plastic consumption, hoping to inspire others to take action as well. Furthermore, I am eager to get involved in clean-up efforts to remove plastic waste from the environment. I plan to volunteer for beach clean-ups and support organizations working to clean up plastic pollution. By actively participating in these efforts, I can help to make a tangible impact in the fight against plastic pollution. In conclusion, plastic pollution is a formidable environmental challenge that necessitates a united front to overcome. By collectively reducing consumption, increasing recycling, and participating in clean-up efforts, we can all play a part in shielding our environment from its detrimental effects. I am resolute in my commitment to address this pressing issue and I invite you all to join me in this crucial endeavor.

Norman's dedication to his craft demonstrates the immense impact that pursuing one's passions can have, no matter the obstacles faced along the way. Furthermore, Norman's commitment to mentorship and fostering talent is exemplary. These two related Netflix series offer electrifying performances that served as my ultimate motivation and escape from my artistic chaos. When talking about binge-worthy Netflix shows, "Breaking Bad" and "Better Call Saul" undoubtedly make the top of the list. “The Office” Obsessed! Fan Scholarship
The character I resonate most with from "The Office" is Dwight Schrute. While not everyone's cup of tea, Dwight's unique personality and quirks have always struck a chord with me. Just like Dwight, I can at times be quite gullible and naïve. This is because my parents raised me in a sheltered environment, which sometimes resulted in me lacking certain street smarts or social awareness. Through Dwight's experiences in the show, however, I have learned to navigate workplace dynamics and developed a better sense of humor. Dwight Schrute is an incredibly complex character, and his idiosyncrasies make him both amusing and relatable. His unwavering loyalty to his job and his ability to commit to even the most mundane tasks resonates with me. Like Dwight, I am someone who takes my work seriously and believes in putting in my best effort, regardless of the task at hand. Dwight's work ethic and dedication have inspired me to be more diligent and persistent in my career. One of the most significant ways in which "The Office" has shaped my sense of humor is through its use of awkward and cringe-worthy comedy. The show's mockumentary format allows for humor that is often subtle and relies on the discomfort of its characters. I've learned to appreciate these moments and find humor in situations that might otherwise be considered uncomfortable or even embarrassing. This has taught me the value of finding the lighter side of things, even in the most awkward of situations. Furthermore, "The Office" has given me a fresh perspective on workplace dynamics. The show highlights various personalities and types of individuals that one might encounter in a work environment. Through their interactions and conflicts, I've come to understand the importance of effective communication, collaboration, and adapting to different personalities. The characters in "The Office" embody a range of workplace archetypes, from the power-hungry manager to the slacker employee. By witnessing their successes and failures, I've learned valuable lessons on how to navigate office politics and build positive relationships with colleagues. "The Office" also sheds light on the concept of work-life balance. While the show often exaggerates the drama and silliness for comedic effect, it touches upon the difficulties of juggling personal and professional lives. Characters like Jim and Pam provide a glimpse into the struggles and triumphs of maintaining a fulfilling personal life while dealing with the demands of a professional career. This has made me more conscious of the need to prioritize personal well-being and find a healthy balance between work and leisure. In conclusion, I resonate most with Dwight Schrute from "The Office" because of our shared gullibility and naivety. Through Dwight's character, the show has shaped my sense of humor by teaching me to find humor in uncomfortable situations and appreciate the value of a good laugh. Nintendo Super Fan Scholarship
Hands down, Mario Kart has to be my favorite Nintendo game to play in co-op mode. One of my fondest memories from playing Mario Kart with my high school friend, Charles, was during a multiplayer session where we decided to create a custom gaming experience by changing the power-ups to "shells only." This unique twist on the game turned out to be an exhilarating and unforgettable gaming session that solidified Mario Kart's place as my top choice for co-op mode. One Saturday afternoon during winter break, Charles and I were itching for some intense gaming action. We fired up our Nintendo Switch consoles, connected them for an epic multiplayer battle, and dived straight into the world of Mario Kart. We knew that this session was going to be different when we decided to tweak the settings and activate the "shells only" power-up mode. The race began, and chaos ensued. From the very first second, shells were flying through the air, causing havoc by knocking our carefully maneuvered karts off track. The game took on a whole new level of intensity as we quickly realized that survival relied solely on mastering the art of dodging and counterattacking with shells. Dodging incoming shells became an art form, as we swerved and weaved through the tracks, desperately trying to avoid being hit. The heart-pounding thrill of narrowly evading a shell was intoxicating, and we found ourselves laughing and shouting in excitement with each close call. But it wasn't all about dodging. It was about strategy too. Timing became crucial as we learned to release our shells at just the right moment, aiming for the perfect trajectory to take down our opponent. The satisfaction of hearing Charles groan in defeat as my well-timed shell struck his kart was immeasurable. One particular moment stands out vividly in my memory. We were racing on Rainbow Road, a notoriously treacherous track with narrow paths and risky shortcuts. As we rounded a sharp turn, both of us launched our shells simultaneously. The colorful projectiles whirled through the air, narrowly missing each other. With a sudden burst of speed, I took the shortcut, hoping to secure a favorable position. However, my confidence quickly turned to horror as Charles expertly shot a shell at just the right moment, completely obliterating my kart. I watched in dismay as he raced past me, taking the lead. As we both burst into laughter, I couldn't help but appreciate the sheer joy and excitement that this custom "shells only" game mode had brought to our Mario Kart experience. The intensity, the strategy, and the unexpected twists made this gaming session unforgettable. It was moments like these that solidified Mario Kart as my favorite game to play in co-op mode. In conclusion, playing Mario Kart in co-op mode created thrilling and unforgettable moments of competition and camaraderie with my friend Charles, especially with the added twist of "shells only." It was these moments that made this game my go-to choice for multiplayer sessions, and my high school years will always be cherished for the memories created while racing through colorful tracks, dodging shells, and laughing until our sides hurt.

The Delectable Negro by Vincent Woodard is a profoundly impactful book that dissects the harrowing history of racialized desire and exploitation. In an era marked by widespread discussions about critical race theory and book censorship in schools, this book is all the more relevant, as it confronts us with uncomfortable but necessary truths that challenge our understanding of race, power, and societal constructs. Woodard provides a groundbreaking analysis of the historical relationship between Black bodies and white desire within the framework of slavery and beyond. This book unpacks the deeply ingrained notion, rooted in colonialism, that Black people exist solely for the pleasure and consumption of white individuals. Woodard delves into the disturbing historical phenomenon of the "Delectable Negro" - a term used to describe enslaved individuals who were perceived as especially alluring and pleasing to white masters. By examining narratives, advertisements, artworks, and first-hand accounts, Woodard highlights how the commodification of Black bodies went hand-in-hand with the dehumanization of an entire race. He reveals how the eroticization and fetishization of Blackness contributed to the ongoing racial inequalities that persist in our society today. Through his meticulous research and analysis, he challenges readers to confront the uncomfortable truths surrounding how racial hierarchies have been perpetuated and normalized. If everyone were to read The Delectable Negro, we would be confronted with the devastating consequences of racialized desire throughout history. Woodard's meticulous research helps us understand the roots of systemic racism, opening our eyes to the complex interplay of social, political, and economic factors that sustain racial inequalities. By exposing the historical context of white desire for Black bodies, this book prompts us to critically reassess our own biases, assumptions, and privileges. The Delectable Negro fosters empathy and understanding by centering the experiences of those who have been marginalized and objectified. By shining a light on the historical exploitation of Black bodies, Woodard brings greater visibility to the ongoing struggles for racial justice. Through this knowledge, we can confront and dismantle systematic patterns of oppression. In conclusion, The Delectable Negro is a crucial book that confronts the complicated dynamics of racialized desire head-on. It exposes the deeply entrenched ideologies that perpetuate racial hierarchies and challenges readers to critically examine their complicity in these systems. By reading this book, we gain a deeper understanding of the historical forces that continue to shape our society and take meaningful steps toward a more equitable future.

Hearts on Sleeves, Minds in College Scholarship
Veganism and poverty, two of my passions in life, initially may appear unrelated. However, upon closer examination, it becomes evident that these two movements share significant intersections. As an African American college student who grew up in a vegan household, I have developed a deep understanding of the overlaps between both causes and their impact on my daily life. Let’s explore this relationship between veganism and poverty, addressing how the two movements intersect and the implications for my role as a concerned college student, effectively affecting my everyday life. One of the primary intersections between veganism and poverty lies in the limited access to nutritious food options. In disadvantaged communities, access to fresh fruits, vegetables, and plant-based protein sources is often scarce due to food deserts, where grocery stores offering affordable and healthy options are lacking. Consequently, impoverished individuals are forced to rely on processed, high-calorie, and cheap food that lacks nutritional value, leading to increased health problems. As a vegan, I am keenly aware that promoting access to nutritious plant-based foods translates to both tackling poverty and empowering disadvantaged communities. Another significant point of intersection is the issue of global food inequality. The current agricultural system prioritizes the production of animal-based products, significantly contributing to deforestation, greenhouse gas emissions, and water scarcity. This disconnects resource-rich countries from the consequences while exacerbating global poverty. By adopting veganism as a lifestyle, I strive to reduce my ecological footprint and contribute to a fairer distribution of resources, advocating for a more sustainable and equitable food system. Beyond sustainable food practices, veganism can also address poverty at a local level by supporting small-scale farmers. Emphasizing a plant-based diet encourages the consumption of locally grown produce, assisting local economies by creating demand for their products. By consciously sourcing my food from local farmers' markets and supporting initiatives that promote sustainable farming practices, I contribute to the economic development and livelihood of individuals living in poverty. Empathy and social justice are key principles shared by both veganism and poverty alleviation movements. Veganism encourages individuals to extend their compassion beyond human suffering to all sentient beings, including animals. By recognizing the similarities between the struggles faced by marginalized communities and farmed animals, one can foster a more empathetic perspective. This empathy can be translated into activism that addresses multiple forms of oppression, including poverty, racism, and animal exploitation. In conclusion, the intersection between veganism and poverty reveals the underlying connections between compassionate dietary choice and social justice. As an African American college student passionate about both local and global poverty, I find that my commitment to veganism aligns with my desire to address the systemic inequalities that perpetuate poverty. The shared values of both movements allow me to engage in conversations and take actions that promote equitable access to nutritious food, advocate for sustainable agricultural practices, support local economies, and work towards a more compassionate and just society. By understanding the overlaps, I am empowered to live my everyday life as a concerned college student with a holistic approach to social change.

Academic Liberty & Free Speech Scholarship
Free speech is a fundamental right that plays a crucial role in American college students' intellectual and personal development, regardless of their race or background. It fosters an environment for open dialogue, diverse opinions, critical thinking, and personal growth. As a minority art student at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), I have personally experienced the transformative power of free speech and its impact on fostering diversity of thought and critical thinking. The preservation of this fundamental right is essential as it allows individuals to express themselves freely, challenges societal norms, and promotes a deeper understanding of various perspectives. Students often come to college with preconceived notions and limited exposure to different viewpoints. Free speech on campus allows for the exchange of ideas, encouraging students to question their beliefs and broaden their understanding of the world. It challenges students to engage in critical thinking, evaluate arguments, and develop strong reasoning skills. For minority students like me at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), free speech becomes even more crucial. Historically marginalized groups have often been silenced or had their voices suppressed. As an art student and a member of SCAD's Black Student Council, my involvement in the club's extracurricular activities has played a significant role in advancing diversity of thought and critical thinking while preserving free speech on campus. Through the Black Student Council, we create spaces where students from diverse backgrounds can share their experiences and express their perspectives on race, identity, and social issues. Our club organizes events, panel discussions, and workshops that encourage dialogue and provide a platform for students to voice their opinions freely. Engaging in these activities challenges the prevailing narratives and promotes a more inclusive environment where all voices are heard. The diversity of thought that comes from such activities is essential for preserving free speech on campus. When students are exposed to different perspectives, it widens their understanding of complex issues and encourages empathy and tolerance. It also helps debunk stereotypes and prejudices by providing firsthand experiences and narratives that challenge societal misconceptions. Furthermore, our involvement in extracurricular activities within the Black Student Council helps cultivate critical thinking skills. By participating in panel discussions and workshops, we learn to analyze and evaluate arguments from different perspectives. This fosters a culture of intellectual curiosity and encourages students to think critically about the world around them. When individuals are exposed to a variety of opinions and encouraged to engage in thoughtful debates, it strengthens their ability to form well-reasoned opinions and articulate their viewpoints effectively. Preserving free speech is essential because it allows for the pursuit of knowledge and intellectual growth. Restricting free expression inhibits the exploration of new ideas and hinders the generation of innovative and transformative thinking. By safeguarding this fundamental right, colleges and universities create an environment that supports intellectual freedom, encourages creativity, and enhances personal development. In conclusion, free speech plays a crucial role in the intellectual and personal development of American college students. It promotes diversity of thought, critical thinking, and the exchange of ideas. As an active member of SCAD's Black Student Council, my involvement in extracurricular activities advances these principles by providing spaces for dialogue, challenging prevailing narratives, and cultivating critical thinking skills. This active engagement helps to enrich the intellectual and personal experiences of students, ensuring that the essential right of free speech is both protected and celebrated. By preserving the fundamental right to free speech, we create a more inclusive and intellectually stimulating environment for all students.

This psychological boost can be transformative for any budding artist, as it instills a sense of self-worth and the conviction that their dreams are achievable, regardless of their financial background. Ultimately, my dream of becoming an art illustrator goes beyond personal fulfillment. Art has a unique power to communicate and evoke emotions in ways that words alone cannot. Coming from a low-income household has undoubtedly shaped my perspective and taught me invaluable lessons about resilience and determination. Growing up, my friends often had nice things, from brand-name clothing to the latest gadgets, while I had to make do with the basics. At times, this disparity made me feel inadequate and left out, intensifying the challenges I faced in dealing with depression. However, rather than succumbing to self-pity or despair, my childhood experiences have motivated me to persevere and make a positive impact in my community. Living with limited financial resources forced me to become resourceful and creative in solving my problems. I learned to rely on my ingenuity rather than solely on external factors or material possessions. This mindset has been instrumental in dealing with the challenges posed by depression. I understood that true happiness and fulfillment do not stem from material possessions but from personal growth, relationships, and pursuing passions. Growing up in a low-income household also made me acutely aware of the struggles faced by many individuals and families within my community. I witnessed firsthand the impact of poverty, lack of opportunity, and resource gaps. This has ignited a strong desire within me to make a positive change and provide support to those facing similar circumstances. Drawing from my own experiences, I plan to use my life story as a means of inspiration for others who may be grappling with depression or coming from low-income households. Through sharing my journey, I aim to convey the message that adversity does not define one's worth or potential. I want to empower others to embrace their unique circumstances and use them as steppingstones towards personal growth and success. Additionally, I intend to actively engage with local community organizations and initiatives to alleviate poverty and support mental health. By volunteering my time, resources, and knowledge, I hope to contribute to the collective effort of creating a more inclusive and supportive environment for those who may be marginalized or struggling. Furthermore, I recognize the importance of education and the transformative power it holds. Having experienced the limitations that come with limited financial resources, I am passionate about advocating for equal access to quality education for all individuals. I aim to work with educational institutions and nonprofits to develop programs that empower young people from low-income backgrounds and equip them with the necessary tools to break the cycle of poverty. Ultimately, my goal is to create a ripple effect within my community, inspiring others to persevere through challenging circumstances and actively contribute to positive change. By leveraging my own experiences and employing empathy and understanding, I hope to foster a supportive network that addresses the unique needs of those who may be marginalized or battling with mental health issues. Together, we can create a more inclusive and equitable society, where everyone has the opportunity to thrive and reach their full potential, regardless of their socioeconomic background.

Spiderman was an integral part of my childhood and continues to be a source of inspiration for me. The enthralling storytelling, engaging characters, and dynamic visuals have left an indelible mark on my artistic sensibilities. The Spiderman movies, in particular, have heightened my interest in digital art, motivating me to explore the possibilities within this medium. Among the many captivating alternate versions of Spiderman, Spider-Punk stands out with his rebellious attitude and unique punk rock-inspired appearance. The character's fusion of two unrelated genres instantly drew me in, eliciting a sense of excitement and creative potential. Spider-Punk challenges the traditional superhero archetype while embodying a distinct countercultural spirit, making him a perfect candidate for my digital art recreation. Employing bold and striking colors, jagged lines, and edgy typography enabled me to capture the essence of punk rock within my artwork. By employing the versatility of digital art software, I could experiment freely, easily adjusting and refining my creation until it perfectly aligned with my creative vision. As a young African-American male college student majoring in art, artistic vibrancy is very near and dear to my heart. The lack of artistic vibrancy and community relevance is a pressing issue that affects my community on multiple levels. It deprives individuals of the opportunities to explore and express their creativity and hampers community development, social cohesion, and economic growth. Therefore, addressing this issue is paramount to fostering a more inclusive and dynamic society. Artistic vibrancy enriches communities by providing a platform for self-expression and identity exploration. Through various art forms, individuals can convey their experiences, struggles, and aspirations, creating a shared understanding and empathy among community members. The absence of artistic vibrancy disconnects people from their cultural heritage, reducing community pride and eroding the sense of belonging. As a result, residents may feel detached and disengaged from their community, hindering the social fabric that holds it together. Furthermore, artistic vibrancy stimulates community development by attracting tourists, businesses, and new residents. A vibrant arts scene creates a buzz that draws visitors, leading to increased spending in local businesses. Moreover, artists often collaborate with other industries, such as hospitality and retail, generating employment opportunities and boosting the local economy. Without artistic vibrancy, my community fails to tap into its creative potential, missing out on the numerous socio-economic benefits associated with a thriving cultural sector. Community relevance, on the other hand, refers to the ability of artistic endeavors to reflect and address local challenges, concerns, and aspirations. Art that resonates with the community's needs is key in initiating critical discussions, raising awareness about social issues, and encouraging civic engagement. When artistic expression remains distant from community realities, it fails to address pressing concerns, perpetuating apathy and stagnation. By embracing community relevance in the arts, my community can initiate positive social change, foster dialogue, and promote inclusivity. To address the issue of the lack of artistic vibrancy in my community, there are several key steps I would take to create a positive change. The first step taken would be to establish a platform for local artists to showcase their talents. This could be in the form of a monthly art exhibition or a cultural festival, which would provide artists with a space to express themselves and share their works with the community. By promoting and celebrating local art, we can encourage more individuals to engage in artistic activities and appreciate its vibrancy. The next step is recognizing that it is essential to foster connections and collaborations among artists. I would organize networking events or art workshops to bring artists together, where they can share ideas, learn from one another, and potentially collaborate on projects. By building a strong artistic community, we can enhance the vibrancy and creative energy within the community. Additionally, I would actively seek partnerships with local educational institutions and government organizations to integrate art into the curriculum and public spaces. By supporting art education in schools and funding public art projects, we can cultivate a culture of creativity and appreciation for the arts from a young age. This collaboration would also enable artists to gain exposure and recognition, further enhancing the vibrancy of the community. My final step would be encouraging community involvement by hosting interactive art events and workshops for all ages. By inviting the community to actively participate in artistic endeavors, such as mural painting or community theater productions, we can break down barriers and inspire people to embrace their artistic talents and contribute to the vibrant cultural scene.

Illustrative art, particularly superhero animation, holds a special place in my heart as it ignites my imagination, offers an escape from reality, and enables me to connect with powerful and inspirational characters. Superhero animation has always been a gateway to my imagination. It transports me to a world where anything is possible. The vibrant colors, dynamic action sequences, and intricate details create an immersive experience that allows me to fully immerse myself in the story being told. The ability of illustrative art to bring fantastical characters and their superhuman abilities to life is nothing short of remarkable, inspiring me to dream big and think outside the box. Additionally, superhero animation provides a temporary escape from the realities of everyday life. It serves as a form of entertainment and relaxation, helping me unwind and temporarily forget about any stress or worries I may be experiencing. Through engaging stories and captivating artwork, I can immerse myself in a world where justice prevails, good always triumphs over evil, and heroes strive to make a positive impact. This escapism is vital for my mental well-being, allowing me to recharge and find solace in art. Moreover, superhero animation introduces me to characters who embody values such as courage, resilience, and perseverance. These heroes serve as powerful role models, inspiring me to be a better version of myself. They show me the importance of helping others, standing up for what is right, and never giving up, even in the face of overwhelming obstacles. Illustrative art can convey these values in a visually striking way, leaving a lasting impact on my mindset and personal growth. I have enjoyed drawing since I was a little boy. I enjoyed drawing cartoon characters from some of the shows that I used to watch growing up. For the longest time, I was pretty much self-taught by watching YouTube videos of some of my favorite artists. As I got a little older, my parents sent me to a local art school during some of my free time. Over the years, I have learned to paint in the traditional sense and create digital art as well. Now that I am in college, I aim to get a degree in Illustration. I was fortunate enough to be accepted to the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), one of the top art schools in the country. Being a young black male, several influences have impacted my decision to pursue superhero animated illustration. First and foremost, representation matters. Growing up, it was rare to see black superheroes depicted in mainstream media. The lack of diversity in the industry only fueled my determination to become a part of it and bring my unique perspective. Secondly, the power of storytelling and its ability to inspire and empower cannot be underestimated. Superhero-animated illustrations have the potential to not only entertain but also serve as a platform for social commentary and cultural representation. Through my artwork, I want to highlight the experiences and struggles of black individuals, shedding light on their stories and showing that they too can be heroes. Finally, the growing popularity of superhero franchises such as Marvel and DC Comics has created a demand for diverse and dynamic characters. Audiences are increasingly seeking representation and stories that resonate with them on a personal level. By pursuing superhero animated illustration, I hope to contribute to this demand and provide much-needed representation for young black individuals who long to see themselves reflected in this genre.

My passion for art started around the age of when I was in kindergarten. I vaguely recall watching cartoons, Sonic the Hedgehog in particular. I found myself wanting to draw his character and I was fortunate that my school’s art teacher took time out to show me how to draw. I would spend hours immersed in my little world, completely absorbed by the creative process. As I progressed through middle school and high school, I began enjoying creating art medians that included superheroes along with some of my favorite vocal artists. Art became not just a hobby, but a part of who I am - an outlet for self-expression, a means of communication, and a way to bring beauty to the world. Some of my achievements include my art being featured in a tribute book dedicated to the late YouTuber, Erika. The book is called JoyconBoyz Forever. My art was also featured in a fan-led book in celebration of the 2022 Batman Movie called Unmask the Truth. Just last month, I completed an online fanbook that I put together myself named Welcome to the Spider-Verse: An ATSV Fanzine. I was tasked with evaluating hundreds of illustrations submitted by artists competing to have their artwork published. I was a founding member of M.U.S.E., a group dedicated to discovering artistic talent around my high school. I designed a t-shirt for Alitas De Pollo restaurant in Dallas. The summer before my freshman year of high school, I attended the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) and completed their Discover Animation course. Currently, I am an illustration artist student at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), and my ultimate career goal is to become a part of the highly creative team at Sony Animation. I want to bring my unique skills and ideas to the table and contribute to creating exceptional visual content that entertains and engages audiences across the globe. At Sony Animation, my goal would be to work on a variety of projects, from feature-length animated films to short videos and social media content. I aspire to tackle different genres and styles, adding to my repertoire and pushing my boundaries as an artist. I want to highlight my versatility and flexibility by adapting to the assorted styles and looks of various characters or settings while staying true to the narrative, message, and vision of the project. In addition, I aim to collaborate with an enthusiastic, creative team of artists, directors, and producers to gain valuable insights and exchange ideas toward mutual growth and development. I want to learn from senior professionals and mentor junior artists, inspiring and motivating them to reach their full potential. Overall, I dream of being part of a team that is at the forefront of innovation and creativity in the world of animation, creating inspiring and memorable stories that audiences adore.
    Spider-Man Showdown Scholarship
I became very excited when I came across the Spider-Man Showdown Scholarship opportunity. Spider-Man was the very first superhero that I became enamored with as a young boy. The 2002 Spider-Man, starring Tobey Maguire, was the first superhero movie that I remember watching as a kid. I used to walk around the house shooting imaginary spider webs at my parents. Spider-Man was also the first superhero animated character that I started drawing when I was in elementary school. When I first thought about who my favorite Spider-Man actor was, my mind immediately went to Shameik Moore, the voice of Miles Morales. One reason is that I’m studying illustration and animation at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), so I’m naturally attracted to the Spider-Verse movie sequels. Another reason is that being of African American descent, I can more closely identify with someone with a similar minority background, with Moore being of Jamaican descent. Ultimately after reading all of the scholarship guidelines, I realized that I needed to narrow my favorite Spider-Man character to a “human” on-screen actor. The question of who my favorite Spider-Man actor is and why is very challenging for me. As a huge nerd, I share the same amount of love in all three iterations equally. However, I ultimately have to go with Tom Holland’s portrayal of the beloved wall-crawler. As it’s the one I empathized with and identify with the most. Although I have cherished memories of Tobey and Andrew, I found Tom’s performance to be the most relatable to me. This was because Holland’s movies were released during my high school years, and I believe they significantly impacted me as an individual as I was transforming from boyhood into being a young man. While I was experiencing the ups and downs of high school, I could also see Peter Parker, played by Holland, go through similar experiences on screen. I felt like I was growing up along with Tom’s version of Peter Parker as the movies released. My final school years before entering college were crucial in shaping my identity, much like the theme of many Spider-Man stories. During high school, I faced numerous challenges such as struggling to fit in, being socially awkward, and trying to develop my identity beyond my hobbies. Coincidently, Tom’s character in the story dealt with the same problems. Although I do not possess any super spider powers or a secret identity, it was still nice to identify with the struggles of one of my favorite heroes in pop culture.

I pour my heart and soul into every piece, aiming to evoke emotions, educate, and foster dialogue. My ambition, drive, and passion are tied to becoming a trailblazer, giving a voice to the underrepresented through my artistic expression. I actively seek opportunities to collaborate with fellow artists, advocates, and mentors who share my vision and further amplify the narratives that are often overlooked. The hip-hop culture has always had a profound impact on me artistically, igniting a fire within my creative spirit and influencing my artistic expression across various mediums. This vibrant culture encapsulates not only a unique style of music, but an entire way of life that is rooted in authenticity, self-expression, and resilience. Hip-hop's artistic exploration of societal issues, personal struggles, and cultural identity resonates deeply with me. Its ability to shed light on the realities of marginalized communities and challenge the status quo inspires me to use my own art as a platform for social change and amplifying marginalized voices. Through hip-hop, I have learned the power of storytelling as a way to convey powerful messages and evoke emotions. The dynamic nature of hip-hop encourages me to constantly experiment and push boundaries in my artistic pursuits. The fusion of different art forms, like graffiti and music, within hip-hop culture inspires me to embrace experimentation and break free from conventional artistic norms. Additionally, hip-hop's emphasis on individuality and self-expression encourages me to be unapologetically myself in my artistic endeavors. This culture celebrates diversity and urges its participants to embrace their true selves, fostering an environment where creativity can flourish uninhibited. Ultimately, my ambition, drive, and passion create a compelling narrative that challenges the status quo and reshapes the art industry. I desire to break the mold and amplify diverse perspectives ensuring that my journey as an art student will not only benefit me personally but also uplift and inspire future generations of artists from underrepresented backgrounds as well.

Art became not just a hobby, but a part of who I am - an outlet for self-expression, a means of communication, and a way to bring beauty to the world. However, pursuing my dream of studying illustration at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) has been met with a significant obstacle - the high tuition cost. As an aspiring artist, the financial burden posed by the esteemed institution feels overwhelming, and it dampens my enthusiasm and determination. SCAD, renowned for its exceptional faculty, top-notch facilities, and strong industry connections, undoubtedly offers an exemplary education. The college's focus on the practical application of art, along with its emphasis on developing both technical skills and artistic vision, aligns perfectly with my aspirations. Being surrounded by a community of passionate artists, the opportunity to collaborate and grow alongside them would undoubtedly enrich my artistic journey. However, the reality of the high tuition cost can be disheartening. The weight of student loans, the pressure to secure scholarships or grants, and the fear of financial instability can cast a shadow over my dream. It is not that I underestimate the value of education or the investment required for quality instruction - it is simply that the financial strain diminishes my ability to focus wholeheartedly on my passion. While the high tuition cost of the Savannah College of Art and Design may make the pursuit of an illustration degree challenging, it does not extinguish the fire within me. I remain determined to overcome this hurdle and find my path towards sharing my art with the world. I believe that with perseverance, resourcefulness, and unwavering dedication, I can navigate the financial challenges and ultimately achieve my goal of becoming an accomplished artist. When it comes to art illustration, I engage both my right and left brain hemispheres to create a harmonious and balanced result. My right brain is associated with creativity, intuition, and emotions, while my left brain is linked to logical thinking, analysis, and critical reasoning. In the initial stages of an art illustration, my right brain takes charge. I tap into my imagination and allow myself to freely explore various ideas and concepts. This is when I brainstorm and visualize the overall composition, color palette, and mood of the artwork. By accessing my intuition and emotions, I can connect deeply with the subject matter and portray it in a way that evokes feelings and engages the viewer's senses. Once I have a clear vision in mind, my left brain steps in to help with the technical aspects of the illustration process. I employ logical thinking to break down the composition into smaller elements and plan the execution of each part. This involves analyzing proportions, perspective, and lighting to ensure accuracy and realism. Furthermore, my left brain helps me make decisions regarding the choice of materials, such as selecting the right brushes, pencils, or digital tools, to achieve the desired effects. By utilizing both sides, I can produce art illustrations that are visually appealing, emotionally impactful, and technically sound.

I am currently enrolled at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD). I have been interested in various forms of art since I was a little boy. I am pursuing a degree in illustration and my dream is to enjoy a career in animation. As a result of my love of art and the respect I had from my peers, I was tasked with designing and painting the majority of student and staff personal parking spaces during my senior year of high school. This mental and labor-intensive challenge was a personal accomplishment that relied upon my overall skills and strengths as an artist. As a designer and painter, I need to have an eye for detail, be creative, and possess effective communication skills in order to complete tasks successfully. One of the most important strengths required as a designer and painter is having attention to detail. When designing and painting parking spaces, I need to consider the allocated space and size, the color scheme, and the background design. I have to ensure that my design reflects the personality of the teacher or student. Having attention to detail also ensures that the final design looks professional and visually appealing. Being creative is another strength necessary for designing and painting these spaces. The design should not only reflect the personality of the teacher or student, but it should also be original and creative. I would involve the teacher or student in the creative process by asking for their input and the elements they want to be included in the design. I would then use my creative skills to integrate these ideas into a cohesive and visually appealing design. Effective communication skills are essential when designing and painting customized parking spaces. Communication with the school authorities, teachers, and students is critical to determine the expectations, requirements, and deadlines. I would need to communicate my ideas clearly to the teacher or student to ensure that I have understood the requirements and have incorporated their expectations in the design. In summary, designing and painting individual and customized teacher and student parking spaces require a set of skills and strengths that include attention to detail, creativity, and effective communication. Having a firefighter parent both influenced my actions growing up and helped shape some of my artistic skills. My dad instilled in me a strong work ethic and encouraged me to pursue my passion in life like he has done over the last twenty-six years as a firefighter/paramedic. My dad is also great at communicating when interacting with the public, whether it be making emergency calls or attending show-and-tell-type events while at work. So, he has always stressed the importance of communication. He told me that if I found a career in something I love that I would never work a day in my life. He encourages me to show a sense of pride in whatever I do, and that mantra is what I strive to live by.
