Ms. Sobaski’s Strength and Kindness Memorial Scholarship
During my junior year of high school and into the summer, I went through three foot surgeries, one on my right foot, and two on the left. The first two were bunion correction surgeries to relieve foot and back pain I have battled since I was very young. However, one of the incisions from the second procedure got infected and prevented all three of the incisions from healing. I had to go through months of visits to infectious disease and wound care centers, as well as many antibiotic infusions and blood tests to fight the infection. I ended up having the third surgery to remove the hardware in my foot in order to get rid of the infection for good and begin the healing process.
Even though this was a tough period of my life, I was able to go through it with a smile on my face with the kindness and support of all my doctors, friends, and family members. Having a friendly face to welcome me three times per week at my appointments made them much more bearable and less scary. The support and understanding I received from my teachers also helped me get through all the school I had to miss as well, especially my high school's secretary, she was very caring and excited to see me every time I was late to school or had to leave early due to an appointment. I would not have been able to make it through all of these procedures without my mom. She stayed up all night with me when I needed to stay on top of my medications, took me to my countless doctor's appointments, and was there for me during all of the frustration and sadness.
Even little acts of kindness from others helped me make it through this period. For example, holding the door or carrying my backpack to class for me. These two acts of kindness stuck out to me because moving around with crutches makes it especially hard to carry items and get through doorways that close by themselves.
I am very grateful for all the support and kindness I received throughout all of my surgeries and medical issues, it gave me the strength to not give up and fight the battle. Staying strong through all of the bad news, failed attempts at healing, and prolonged injury helped me to get through it with a smile on my face. Instead of letting myself lay in bed and stay cooped up in my house the whole time, I used this strength to continue my everyday activities like going to school, cheering on my brother at his baseball games, and my best friends at their softball games. I also have gained a lot of insight into what it's like to have a significant injury and how much kindness and strength it takes to get through these types of things.
