Education has been the greatest tool for change in my life, and I intend to use it to create opportunities for others. As a first-generation student, I understand the barriers that can hinder success—lack of resources, mentorship, and guidance. Through my future education in computer science, I am determined to bridge these gaps and empower others, particularly those from underrepresented backgrounds, to succeed in the ever-evolving world of technology.
When I was thirteen, my grandmother in Ethiopia called with joy in her voice—my cousin had passed her exams and earned a scholarship to a prestigious school. But in the next breath, my grandmother lamented that the school lacked basic resources: no computers, outdated textbooks, and unreliable electricity. That conversation stayed with me, planting the seed of my commitment to addressing inequities in education through technology.
My passion for making a difference started early. As the president of Helping Hands, I have led initiatives to support my community, whether by organizing service projects, collaborating with other student organizations, or mentoring peers. Additionally, my role as a library volunteer for the past two years has allowed me to guide young students toward knowledge, helping them develop a love for learning. These experiences have reinforced my belief that education is not just about personal growth; it is about lifting others up along the way.
Computer science is more than just a field of study for me—it is a tool for empowerment. I have seen firsthand how technology can either widen or close opportunity gaps. I am currently working on making a website and search engine to help students in my school discover extracurricular activities that align with their passions. This adaptive quiz will connect students to clubs and leadership opportunities, ensuring they find a community where they can thrive. Through this project, I hope to make an immediate impact at my school and beyond, helping students unlock their potential.
Beyond high school, I aspire to use my education to expand access to STEM opportunities for underprivileged students. Whether through mentorship programs, coding workshops, or developing accessible learning platforms, I want to ensure that every student—regardless of their background—has the chance to explore the world of technology. Having seen and heard stories from kids my age on my trips to Ethiopia and Eritrea, I developed my biggest goal: making technology accessible all over the world. Learning about the kids who still had to write out complicated problems by hand or the poor quality of the minimal technology they had access to made me realize how fortunate I am to have the things I don't give a second thought about.
My commitment to bridging the digital divide stems from my own experiences. I have witnessed how limited access to technology can hinder potential, and I want to ensure that students like my cousin are not left behind. By designing learning platforms that are offline-capable and tailored to underserved schools, I aim to make education more inclusive and accessible.
Patrick B. Moore dedicated his life to encouraging students to pursue their dreams, and I strive to carry on that legacy. By using my education to uplift others, I will make a lasting impact, ensuring that knowledge and opportunity are not privileges but rights accessible to all. My ambition, drive, and commitment to service will allow me to touch lives, just as he did, creating a ripple effect of success that extends far beyond my own journey.
