My family has been deeply affected by cancer through my grandfather, Ronnie Yates. Being told that he has cancer and may only have about two years to live truly broke my heart. It didn’t feel real at first. My grandfather is someone I have always loved deeply, and the thought of losing him so soon is something I still struggle to accept. He is a hardworking man who has spent his life working on his farm in Kevil, Kentucky. Before that, he worked at an atomic bomb plant in Paducah, Kentucky, and knowing that his job may be the reason he is now fighting for his life makes the situation even more painful. When I was younger, my grandfather and I had a very close bond. He was someone who made me feel safe, loved, and supported. But in second grade, I moved to Illinois with my mom due to family issues, and over time, we lost contact. As I got older, I began to feel that loss more deeply. There was always a part of me that felt like something was missing. When I returned to Kentucky in sixth grade, I wanted nothing more than to reconnect with him. I tried, but it wasn’t easy. My grandfather lives a simple life on his farm and does not use phones or social media. On top of that, there were family issues, especially between him and my dad, that made communication even harder. For years, it felt like something was always in the way of us rebuilding our relationship. Finally, during my sophomore year of high school, we were able to reconnect. That moment meant everything to me. It felt like getting a part of my life back that I had been missing for so long. I believed we had time to rebuild our bond and create new memories. However, during my senior year, I found out he had been diagnosed with cancer. That news shattered me. After finally reconnecting, I was suddenly faced with the possibility of losing him again. What hurts the most is knowing how much time we already lost. I wish my family could have set aside their differences sooner so we could have spent more time together. This experience has shown me how fragile life is and how important it is to cherish every moment with the people you love. Watching my grandfather go through this has strengthened my passion for nursing. Seeing someone I love face a life-threatening illness showed me how important compassionate and skilled healthcare workers are. It is not just about treating a disease, it is about caring for the whole person and supporting families during difficult moments. As a freshman at Kentucky State University working toward my BSN, my goal is to become a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA). I want to provide advanced care while also offering comfort and reassurance to patients who may feel scared or uncertain, just like my grandfather. I want to be the kind of nurse who makes patients feel seen, heard, and cared for. Through this experience, I have learned to never take time for granted, to face problems head-on, and to keep the people I love close. Cancer has affected my family in a painful way, but it has also shaped my purpose. It has helped me understand the kind of nurse and person, I want to be: someone who leads with compassion and makes a meaningful difference in the lives of others.

Growing up with a single mother has shaped me into the person I am today; strong, determined, and deeply compassionate. My mom has always been the foundation of our family. Raising four children on her own was never easy, but she carried that responsibility with strength, even on the days when I know she was tired. No matter what we were going through, she made sure we felt loved, supported, and protected. Watching her push through hard times without giving up taught me what true strength really looks like. What stands out to me the most is how my mom didn’t just take care of us, she also tried to hold our entire family together. On her side of the family, there were times when things felt broken or distant, but she always made an effort to keep everyone connected. She checked on relatives, encouraged communication, and tried to bring people closer, even when it wasn’t easy. Seeing that showed me how important family, unity, and love really are. It also taught me that sometimes being strong means being the person who holds everything together, even when no one sees how hard it is. Growing up in that environment made me mature at a young age. As one of four children, I learned responsibility not just for myself, but for my siblings as well. I learned how to be patient, understanding, and aware of people’s struggles. There were moments when I could see how much my mom was carrying, and it made me want to work harder so one day I could take some of that weight off of her. Her sacrifices motivate me every day to keep going, even when things get difficult. Her strength and love have also influenced my decision to pursue a career in nursing. I want to care for people the way she cared for us; with patience, compassion, and genuine concern. As a freshman at Kentucky State University pursuing my Bachelor of Science in Nursing, my goal is to become a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA). I want to make a difference not just by treating patients, but by making them feel safe, heard, and cared for during vulnerable moments in their lives. Everything my mom has done has shaped my mindset, my values, and my future. She taught me resilience, love, and the importance of never giving up. Because of her, I know that no matter how hard life gets, I have the strength to keep going. I carry her lessons with me in everything I do, and I am determined to make her proud while creating a better future for myself and my family.

I have always been the type of person who wants to uplift others, whether that is through encouragement, support, or simply being present during difficult times. My family dynamic has played a major role in shaping who I am today. My parents are separated, and my mom has worked hard to raise four children. These experiences have pushed me to work harder and strive for a better future, not only for myself but for my family as well. Receiving this scholarship would help ease that burden and allow me to focus more on my studies and future career. Outside of school and sports, I enjoy drawing and watching movies, which allow me to express creativity and relax. YOU GOT IT GIRL SCHOLARSHIP
Being a “You Got It Girl” to me means being resilient, driven, and confident in who I am, even when life gets challenging. I have learned to push through obstacles, stay focused on my goals, and continue growing no matter what I face. Growing up in a household where finances were not always stable, with my mom supporting four children and my parents being separated, I had to mature early and understand the importance of hard work and perseverance. Those experiences shaped me into someone who does not give up easily. I believe this YGIG Scholarship will help me achieve my goals by easing financial stress and allowing me to stay focused on both my academics and athletics as I continue working toward becoming a nurse and eventually a CRNA. I have been involved in sports for most of my life. I played basketball and participated in cheer, competitive cheer, and color guard throughout high school. I have also been running track since the 6th grade, and I now compete in track and field at the collegiate level as a freshman at Kentucky State University. My main events are the triple jump and long jump, which require not only physical strength and speed but also technique, focus, and mental discipline. Being a student-athlete has taught me how to stay consistent, manage my time effectively, and perform under pressure. One of my biggest accomplishments is earning the opportunity to continue competing in college, which reflects my dedication and growth over the years. One challenge I faced was balancing everything in my life, school, sports, family responsibilities, and personal struggles. There were times when it felt overwhelming, especially dealing with financial stress at home and the emotional impact of my family situation. Instead of letting it hold me back, I used it as motivation. I pushed myself harder academically and athletically, reminding myself that my future depended on my effort. That experience helped me grow into a stronger, more independent person and showed me that I am capable of overcoming difficult situations. Someone I admire deeply is my mom. She works hard every day to provide for me and my siblings, even when things are not easy. Watching her handle responsibilities, stress, and challenges without giving up has inspired me to keep going no matter what. She has shown me what strength, sacrifice, and unconditional love look like, and I carry those lessons with me in everything I do. This scholarship would support my journey in multiple ways. As a college athlete and nursing major, my schedule is already demanding, and financial stress can make it even more challenging. This support would help cover essential needs such as school expenses, training gear, travel for meets, and daily living costs, allowing me to stay focused on performing at my best both academically and athletically. It would also give me peace of mind knowing I have support behind me as I work toward my long-term goals. If there is anything else I would like you to know, it is that I am determined to make a difference. I am not just working toward success for myself, but for my family and my future patients. I want to use my career in nursing to help others, provide comfort, and positively impact lives in meaningful ways. Everything I do is driven by purpose. Currently, I am a college track and field athlete at Kentucky State University, competing in the triple jump and long jump. Being a student-athlete means balancing intense physical training with academic responsibilities while staying mentally strong. It requires discipline, sacrifice, and commitment every single day. To me, being a student-athlete is about more than just competing, it is about representing resilience, growth, and determination. I take pride in pushing myself to be better both on the track and in the classroom, and I am committed to continuing that journey.

Hello, my name is Teriel Edwards. Growing up, I have always been the kind of person who wanted to help others in any way that I could. Whether it was something small like making someone smile or being there for someone during a difficult time, I found purpose in caring for people. That natural desire to support others is what led me to pursue a career in nursing. My passion for nursing has also been influenced by my family and life experiences. Watching the people around me face challenges, whether it was health-related or personal; made me realize how important it is to have someone who genuinely cares. Community Health Ambassador Scholarship for Nursing Students
Pursuing a degree in nursing has been a goal of mine because it combines my passion for helping others with my desire to build a meaningful and stable career. As a freshman working toward my Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), I see this degree not just as a pathway to a job, but as preparation for a lifelong commitment to service. Nursing stands out to me because it blends knowledge, skill, compassion, and advocacy into one profession that truly impacts lives every day. I have always felt drawn to careers where I could make a difference in a hands-on way. Nursing allows me to be directly involved in patient care while also forming real connections with individuals and families. Nurses are often the healthcare professionals who spend the most time with patients. They monitor changes, provide education, offer reassurance, and advocate for patient needs. I want to be someone who patients feel comfortable with; someone who listens carefully, explains clearly, and treats them with dignity. My decision to pursue nursing is also influenced by the values I was raised with. Watching my dad overcome personal hardships showed me the importance of resilience, strength, and perseverance. He continued to move forward despite challenges, and that example motivates me to push through difficult courses and long study nights. His sacrifices remind me that education is a privilege and an opportunity to create a better future. I am also motivated by my younger sister. I want to set an example for her, showing that hard work and determination can lead to success. In high school, I participated in color guard, cheer, and competitive cheer. These activities taught me discipline, teamwork, and how to stay calm under pressure; skills that are essential in nursing. Healthcare settings can be fast-paced and stressful, and I am learning how important it is to remain focused and composed. Nursing requires both emotional intelligence and critical thinking, and I am committed to developing both as I continue through my BSN program. As a nurse, I hope to contribute to my community by promoting compassionate and patient-centered care. Many people enter healthcare settings feeling anxious, confused, or unheard. I want to help change that experience by being a strong advocate for my patients. Whether it is taking extra time to explain a treatment plan, offering comfort during a difficult diagnosis, or ensuring a patient understands their medications, I want to make healthcare feel more supportive and less intimidating. In the future, I hope to continue advancing my education and possibly become a CRNA. However, no matter what specialty I pursue, my goal will remain the same: to serve my community with integrity, empathy, and excellence. I want to contribute not only by providing quality care but also by educating patients about preventative health and encouraging healthier lifestyles. Strong communities are built on access to knowledgeable and compassionate healthcare professionals, and I want to be part of that foundation. Ultimately, I am pursuing a degree in nursing because it aligns with both my heart and my goals. Nursing will allow me to combine science with service and build a career that truly matters. Through dedication, faith, and hard work, I hope to make a lasting difference in the lives of individuals and in the health of my community.

I am currently a freshman in college pursuing my Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). Choosing nursing as my field of study was a decision rooted in both personal passion and a deep desire to serve others. From a young age, I have always been drawn to helping people, but as I grew older, I realized I wanted to make a difference in a way that was hands-on, meaningful, and impactful. Nursing stood out to me because it blends science, compassion, critical thinking, and advocacy into one powerful profession. As a freshman, my first year of college has already taught me discipline and responsibility on a new level. The transition from high school to college has required maturity, time management, and dedication. My involvement in color guard, cheer, and competitive cheer in high school helped prepare me for this shift. Those activities taught me teamwork, resilience, and how to stay focused under pressure. In nursing, those same qualities are essential. Healthcare environments can be fast-paced and demanding, and I am learning early on how important it is to stay organized, calm, and committed to excellence. My inspiration to pursue a BSN comes from my desire to be present for people during some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives. Nurses are often the professionals who spend the most time with patients. They provide not only medical care, but also emotional support and reassurance. I am drawn to that responsibility. I want to be someone patients trust and feel safe with. I want to advocate for individuals who may feel unheard and ensure they are treated with dignity and respect. Growing up, I witnessed the importance of perseverance within my own family. Watching my dad overcome hardships showed me what strength and determination look like in real life. His resilience motivates me to work hard in college and build a future that reflects stability, compassion, and service. I also feel a strong responsibility to set a positive example for my younger sister, proving that higher education and professional goals are achievable through focus and faith. The difference I want to make through nursing centers on compassionate, patient-centered care. In busy hospital settings, patients can sometimes feel like just another chart or diagnosis. I want to change that by taking the time to listen, explain procedures clearly, and provide comfort. Even small moments of kindness can have a lasting impact on someone experiencing fear or uncertainty. In the future, I hope to expand my education beyond my BSN and potentially become a CRNA. However, regardless of where my career leads, my mission will remain the same: to serve with empathy, skill, and integrity. As a freshman beginning this journey, I am committed to developing the knowledge and character necessary to become the kind of nurse who makes a meaningful and lasting difference in the lives of others.

My inspiration to pursue a career in the medical field comes from a combination of personal experiences, family influence, and a deep desire to serve others during their most vulnerable moments. I have always been drawn to helping people, but over time I realized that healthcare is where compassion and action truly meet. The medical field is not just about treating illnesses, it is about restoring hope, providing comfort, and advocating for patients who may not always have a voice. Growing up, I saw firsthand how important strength and resilience are during difficult times. Watching my dad overcome personal hardships showed me the power of perseverance and responsibility. Those experiences shaped my understanding of how much support matters when someone is struggling. I began to see healthcare professionals as more than just providers, they are stabilizers during chaos, educators during confusion, and comfort during fear. That realization inspired me to pursue nursing. What draws me specifically to nursing is the level of connection nurses build with patients. Nurses are often the ones who spend the most time at the bedside. They are there to explain procedures, calm anxieties, monitor changes, and offer reassurance. I want to be the kind of nurse who patients remember not just for clinical skill, but for kindness and empathy. I believe healing is both physical and emotional, and I want to play a role in both aspects. Throughout high school, being involved in color guard, cheer, and competitive cheer taught me discipline, teamwork, and how to perform under pressure. Those experiences strengthened my ability to stay focused, communicate clearly, and push through challenges; skills that are essential in the medical field. Healthcare requires collaboration, quick thinking, and dedication, and I feel prepared to continue building those qualities as I advance in my education. As I move forward in my career, my long-term goal is to continue advancing within nursing and potentially become a CRNA. I am particularly interested in critical care because it requires precision, calmness, and strong clinical judgment. In high-stress environments, patients rely completely on their healthcare team. I want to be someone who can provide not only technical expertise but also reassurance to families during uncertain moments. I plan to make a difference by advocating for patient-centered care. Every patient comes from a different background, and each deserves to be treated with dignity and respect. I want to contribute to improving communication between patients and providers, ensuring individuals feel heard and understood. Additionally, I hope to mentor future nursing students one day, especially those who may doubt themselves. Representation, encouragement, and guidance can make a powerful difference in someone’s educational journey. Ultimately, my decision to pursue the medical field is rooted in service. I am motivated by the idea that my career can directly impact someone’s quality of life. Whether it is holding a patient’s hand before surgery, educating a family about a treatment plan, or making critical decisions in urgent situations, I want my work to matter. Through dedication, compassion, and continuous learning, I plan to use my career to make a lasting and meaningful difference in the lives of others.

Faith plays a foundational role in my life. It is the quiet strength that keeps me grounded when life feels overwhelming and the steady voice that reminds me of my purpose when doubt creeps in. For me, faith is not just something I practice on certain days, it is something I carry with me daily. It influences how I treat others, how I approach challenges, and how I view my future. Most importantly, it has shaped my academic journey and my decision to pursue a career in nursing. Throughout my life, I have faced moments that tested my resilience. During difficult seasons in my family, especially watching my dad navigate hardship and rebuild from painful circumstances, I learned what perseverance truly looks like. Seeing him push forward despite setbacks strengthened my own belief that obstacles do not define you, your response to them does. My faith gave me peace during uncertain times and reminded me that challenges are often preparation for something greater. Instead of allowing adversity to discourage me, I learned to see it as motivation to work harder and remain focused on my goals. Academically, faith has taught me discipline, humility, and gratitude. There have been times when balancing school, responsibilities, and personal pressures felt overwhelming. In those moments, prayer and reflection helped me reset and refocus. Faith reminds me that my education is not just for personal achievement but for service. As someone pursuing a career in nursing, I believe my calling is rooted in compassion and care for others. Nursing is more than a profession to me; it is a way to live out my faith through action by offering comfort, advocacy, and empathy to patients during some of their most vulnerable moments. My future goal of becoming a nurse, and eventually advancing in my field, is deeply connected to the values my faith instills in me. I want to be the kind of healthcare professional who treats every patient with dignity, patience, and kindness. Faith encourages me to see beyond diagnoses and procedures and recognize the humanity in each person I encounter. It reminds me that healing is not always just physical; sometimes people need reassurance, hope, and someone who truly listens. In addition to my faith, my family has been one of the greatest forces pushing me toward higher education. My dad’s resilience and sacrifices have shown me the importance of building a stable and meaningful future. I want to make him proud and show that his hard work was not in vain. My younger sister also motivates me. I want to be an example for her; someone she can look up to and see that determination and education can open doors. My involvement in activities like color guard, cheer, and competitive cheer in high school also shaped my drive. Those experiences taught me time management, teamwork, and perseverance. They showed me that growth requires effort and consistency; lessons that I now apply to my academic life. Ultimately, faith is my foundation, but the people around me are my motivation. Together, they have shaped my ambition to pursue higher education not only to succeed personally but to serve others meaningfully. I believe my education is part of a bigger purpose. Through dedication, compassion, and faith, I plan to use my degree to make a positive impact in healthcare and in the lives of those I serve.

Hello, my name is Teriel Edwards. And thank you for reviewing my essay. My decision to pursue a career in nursing comes from a deep desire to help others during some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives. Growing up, I learned early that strength is often built through hardship, and watching my family overcome challenges shaped the way I view compassion, resilience, and service. These experiences inspired me to choose a career where I can make a meaningful difference while providing comfort, care, and hope to others. One of the biggest inspirations behind my interest in nursing is my passion for helping people feel seen and supported. I have always been the person others turn to when they need encouragement or someone to listen. Whether supporting friends through difficult situations or helping classmates stay motivated, I realized that caring for others came naturally to me. Nursing allows me to turn that natural compassion into a professional skill, combining emotional support with medical knowledge to truly impact patients’ lives. My involvement in activities throughout high school, including color guard, cheer, and competitive cheer, also played an important role in shaping my path. These experiences taught me discipline, teamwork, and perseverance. Being part of a team showed me how important communication and trust are when working toward a shared goal. In healthcare, nurses must collaborate with doctors, patients, and families in high-pressure situations, and my background has prepared me to work calmly and effectively as part of a team. Another reason nursing inspires me is the opportunity for lifelong growth and learning. Healthcare is constantly evolving, and nurses must continuously expand their knowledge to provide the best care possible. I am motivated by the idea of challenging myself academically and professionally while developing skills that directly improve patient outcomes. Nursing is not just a job; it is a career that requires dedication, adaptability, and a commitment to excellence. I am especially drawn to nursing because it allows me to combine science with compassion. Nurses are often the healthcare professionals who spend the most time with patients, offering reassurance during fear and uncertainty. I want to be someone who not only provides medical care but also advocates for patients and ensures they feel heard and respected. The ability to comfort someone during a difficult moment or help them recover and regain independence is incredibly meaningful to me. Looking toward the future, my long-term goal is to advance my education and become a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA). This path will allow me to continue growing within the nursing profession while playing a critical role in patient safety and care. Nursing is the foundation that will help me build the skills, empathy, and clinical judgment necessary to reach that goal. Ultimately, nursing inspires me because it represents service, compassion, and purpose. I want a career where I can positively impact lives every day, support families during challenging times, and contribute to a healthcare system built on care and humanity. My father has overcome obstacles that deeply shaped not only his own life, but the journey of our entire family. He is the father of two daughters, my younger sister and me; we have two different mothers. When I was in kindergarten and my sister was still a baby, my dad married her mother, and for a time, our family felt whole. However, everything changed when she cheated on him with another man, whom she later married and started a new family with. During the divorce, my father lost almost everything. My sister was taken from Kentucky to Virginia, and communication was cut off completely. Overnight, he lost not only his marriage but daily access to his child. This period broke him emotionally. I watched my father struggle with sadness and heartbreak in ways that were difficult for a child to understand at the time. The situation became so overwhelming that I had to move in with my mother for a few years while he worked to rebuild his life. The hardest part was the absence of my sister. Our family worried constantly about her, missing birthdays, holidays, and everyday moments we should have shared. That loss created a lasting gap in our family relationships. Despite everything, my father refused to give up. By the time I was ten years old, he had slowly rebuilt stability in his life, and I moved back in with him. His determination showed me what resilience truly looks like. Eight years later, my sister’s mother returned to Kentucky, allowing my father and our family to reconnect with her. While relationships have been repaired, they are not as strong as they might have been if those years had not been lost. Still, watching my dad rebuild a relationship with my sister taught me the importance of patience, forgiveness, and never giving up on family. One of my most meaningful memories with my dad comes from something simple-learning, how to ride a bike. My dad and his ex-wife practiced with me every other day, encouraging me as I gained confidence. Eventually, they removed the training wheels, and I finally learned to ride on my own. Not long after, I fell and scraped my knee badly. I remember panicking when I saw the wound, but they comforted me and helped me feel safe. That moment represents more than just learning to ride a bike; it reminds me of the many “firsts” my dad supported me through and how he always helped me get back up after falling. Being raised by a single father has strongly influenced my values, dreams, and vision for the future. For a period of time, I was the only female in the house, which taught me independence and toughness at a young age. My dad allowed me the freedom to discover who I was without hovering over every decision, which helped me develop confidence and ultimately sparked my interest in pursuing a career in healthcare. Watching how he cared for others, even while facing his own struggles, shaped the way I view compassion and relationships. His example also set a high standard for how I expect to be treated in future relationships. Most importantly, my father’s journey motivates me to work harder toward my goals. Seeing where he started, what he endured, and where he stands today inspires me to push myself to become better and create a meaningful future. His resilience taught me that obstacles do not define us, how we rise after them does.

My passion for nursing comes from a genuine desire to help others and make a meaningful difference in people’s lives during moments when they need support the most. From a young age, I have always found fulfillment in caring for others, listening to their concerns, and trying to make their day better. As I grew older, I realized that nursing would allow me to turn those natural qualities into a purposeful career. Nursing combines compassion, critical thinking, and hands-on care, giving me the opportunity to support patients both physically and emotionally while contributing to their overall well-being. Throughout my educational journey, my interest in healthcare continued to grow as I learned how important nurses are in shaping patient experiences. Nurses are often the first to recognize changes in a patient’s condition, the ones who provide reassurance during difficult moments, and the advocates who ensure patients receive safe and respectful care. This level of responsibility inspires me because it allows nurses to build trust and form meaningful connections with patients and their families. I am passionate about becoming someone who patients feel comfortable with, someone who listens, educates, and provides care with empathy and professionalism. What I hope to gain from my nursing career goes beyond professional success. I hope to grow as a leader, a lifelong learner, and a compassionate healthcare provider. Nursing will allow me to continuously expand my knowledge while developing skills that improve patient outcomes. I want to gain experience caring for diverse populations, strengthen my clinical judgment, and learn how to remain calm and confident in high-pressure situations. Most importantly, I hope to leave a positive and lasting impact on the individuals and families I care for. The area of nursing I hope to enter is anesthesia nursing, with the long-term goal of becoming a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA). This specialty appeals to me because it requires advanced knowledge, precision, and strong critical thinking skills while maintaining a deep focus on patient safety. CRNAs play a vital role in ensuring patients remain safe and comfortable during surgical procedures, and I am drawn to the responsibility of closely monitoring and protecting patients during such critical moments. Within this specialty, I hope to make an impact by prioritizing patient-centered care and reducing fear and anxiety surrounding surgery. Many patients experience stress before procedures, and I want to be a professional who provides reassurance through clear communication and compassionate support. By educating patients about anesthesia and addressing their concerns, I can help them feel more confident and secure. I also hope to advocate for safe practices, continuous learning, and high standards of care within my field. Ultimately, my passion for nursing comes from a commitment to service, empathy, and growth. Through my career, I hope to improve patient experiences, promote safety, and contribute positively to healthcare while becoming a skilled and compassionate CRNA who makes a meaningful difference every day.

I am currently a freshman at Kentucky State University, where I am working toward building the academic and personal foundation needed to pursue a career in nursing. My long-term goal is to become a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA), a role that combines advanced clinical knowledge, critical thinking, and compassionate patient care. I have always believed that healthcare is more than treating illness—it is about supporting people during some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives. My journey toward nursing has been shaped by my personal interests, life experiences, and a strong desire to serve others in meaningful ways. Throughout my life, athletics and extracurricular activities have played an important role in shaping who I am today. In high school, I participated in basketball, color guard, cheerleading, and competitive cheer, all of which taught me discipline, teamwork, and perseverance. I have also been running track since sixth grade and now compete in track at the collegiate level. Being involved in multiple activities required strong time management and dedication while balancing academics and personal responsibilities. These experiences helped me develop resilience, communication skills, and the ability to work effectively with others, qualities that are essential in nursing, where collaboration and trust are necessary for providing safe patient care. Outside of academics and athletics, I enjoy drawing and spending time watching new movies and shows during my free time. Creative outlets allow me to relax and maintain balance while managing the demands of school and athletics. Creativity also strengthens my ability to connect with others, as shared interests often help build meaningful relationships. Maintaining balance between responsibilities and personal interests has taught me the importance of self-care, something I hope to encourage in my future patients as well. My desire to pursue nursing began at a young age. Growing up, I naturally wanted to help others and find ways to make people’s days better, whether through small acts of kindness or simply being there to listen. Over time, I realized that nursing would allow me to turn that passion into a lifelong career. I became inspired by the idea of being someone who can provide comfort, reassurance, and care when people need it most. Nursing allows me to combine my compassion for others with science and critical thinking, creating an opportunity to make a lasting difference. Through my medical career, I plan to make a positive impact on the world by promoting patient-centered care, education, and advocacy. As a future nurse and CRNA, I want to ensure that patients feel heard, respected, and safe throughout their healthcare experiences. I hope to reduce fear and uncertainty by clearly explaining procedures, offering emotional support, and treating every patient with dignity. I also plan to encourage preventative care and healthy lifestyle choices, helping individuals improve their overall well-being before serious health problems develop. In addition, I want to serve as a role model within my community by showing that dedication and perseverance can lead to meaningful opportunities. I hope to inspire younger students, especially those who may not see many healthcare professionals who share similar backgrounds, to believe in their ability to succeed. By combining compassion, education, and service, I aim to contribute to a healthcare system that values empathy as much as clinical skill. Ultimately, my passion for helping others, combined with my experiences as a student-athlete and lifelong learner, has guided me toward nursing. Through my medical career, I hope to make a positive and lasting impact by caring for patients with empathy, promoting health and education, and dedicating myself to improving the lives of others one person at a time.

      VNutrition and Wellness Nursing Scholarship
Hello, my name is Teriel Edwards. A career in nursing provides a unique opportunity to improve people’s nutrition and overall health by combining medical knowledge, patient education, and compassionate support. Nutrition plays a critical role in preventing disease, promoting recovery, and maintaining long-term wellness, yet many individuals struggle to make healthy choices due to lack of education, limited resources, or lifestyle challenges. As a future nurse, I hope to use my role not only to treat illness but also to help patients understand how proper nutrition can improve their quality of life and prevent future health complications. One of the most important ways I plan to improve patients’ nutrition is through education. Many health conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, obesity, and hypertension are closely linked to dietary habits. Nurses are often the healthcare professionals who spend the most time communicating with patients, which creates valuable opportunities to explain how food choices directly impact health. I plan to provide clear, realistic guidance that patients can understand and apply in their daily lives. Rather than overwhelming patients with strict diets, I want to focus on small, achievable changes, such as reducing processed foods, increasing water intake, and incorporating more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains into meals. Another important step I plan to take is promoting individualized care. Every patient comes from a different cultural, financial, and social background, and nutrition advice must reflect those differences. I will take time to listen to patients’ routines, preferences, and barriers to healthy eating so that recommendations feel practical rather than unrealistic. By respecting cultural food traditions while suggesting healthier preparation methods or balanced portions, I can help patients make sustainable changes without feeling judged or restricted. Encouragement and support will also play a major role in my nursing practice. Many people know what healthy choices look like but struggle with motivation or consistency. As a nurse, I want to create a supportive environment where patients feel comfortable asking questions and discussing challenges. Positive reinforcement, goal setting, and follow-up conversations can help patients stay accountable and feel proud of their progress. Even small successes, such as choosing healthier snacks or cooking more meals at home, can build confidence and lead to lasting habits. In addition, I plan to collaborate with other healthcare professionals, such as dietitians and community health programs, to connect patients with additional resources. Providing information about nutrition classes, food assistance programs, or community wellness initiatives can help address barriers that extend beyond the hospital or clinic setting. Ultimately, my nursing career will help improve nutrition and overall health by focusing on prevention, education, and compassionate guidance. By empowering patients with knowledge and supporting gradual lifestyle changes, I hope to encourage healthier eating habits that lead to stronger bodies, improved mental well-being, and better long-term health outcomes.

Choosing to pursue a career in nursing developed from a combination of personal experiences, academic growth, and a strong desire to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others. I have always been drawn to helping people, but over time I realized that nursing offered a unique opportunity to combine compassion, knowledge, and hands-on care in a way that truly impacts individuals and families during important moments in their lives. One of the main factors that led me to consider nursing was recognizing how essential nurses are within healthcare. Nurses are often the professionals who spend the most time with patients, providing not only medical care but also emotional support and reassurance. I became inspired by the way nurses advocate for their patients, educate them about their health, and help them feel safe during stressful or uncertain situations. Seeing how much a caring and attentive nurse can influence a patient’s experience made me realize that I wanted to serve in that role and become someone patients could rely on during vulnerable moments. My educational journey also played a significant part in shaping my decision. While progressing through school, I faced challenges that required resilience, independence, and determination. These experiences helped me discover strengths I did not know I had, including patience, problem-solving, and the ability to remain calm under pressure. Through these challenges, I learned that I thrive in environments where I can support others while continuing to grow personally and professionally. Nursing felt like a natural path because it values both technical skill and emotional intelligence. Additionally, I was drawn to the variety and lifelong learning opportunities within nursing. Healthcare is constantly evolving, and nurses must continue developing their knowledge and skills to provide the best care possible. The ability to work in different specialties, care settings, and communities makes nursing a dynamic and rewarding profession. Knowing that I can continue learning while positively impacting others motivates me to pursue this career wholeheartedly. Another reason I chose nursing is the opportunity to build meaningful connections with patients and their families. Healthcare can be overwhelming, and having a nurse who listens, explains, and shows genuine compassion can make a lasting difference. I want to help patients feel heard, respected, and supported throughout their care experience. Being able to offer comfort, education, and encouragement during difficult times is something I find deeply meaningful. Ultimately, what made me consider nursing was the realization that it aligns with my values of compassion, service, and dedication. Nursing allows me to be present for people during vulnerable moments, provide comfort and education, and contribute to improving health outcomes. It is more than a career choice for me, it is a commitment to caring for others with empathy, professionalism, and purpose while continually striving to grow into the best healthcare professional I can become.

      1. My personal inspiration for pursuing a career in nursing comes from a deep desire to help others during some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives. Throughout my experiences in school and life, I have always felt drawn toward roles that involve caring for people, providing comfort, and making a meaningful difference. I realized early on that nursing combines compassion, science, and advocacy in a way that allows me to support both the physical and emotional needs of patients. One of the strongest motivations behind my decision was witnessing how powerful compassionate healthcare can be. I have seen how a nurse’s attitude, patience, and willingness to listen can completely change a patient’s experience. Small actions, such as explaining procedures clearly or offering reassurance during stressful situations, can provide comfort and build trust. These moments showed me that nursing is more than performing medical tasks; it is about treating individuals with dignity and empathy. My educational journey has also strengthened my inspiration. While facing challenges in school, I learned the importance of resilience, communication, and self-advocacy. These experiences helped me understand how important supportive healthcare professionals are, especially for individuals who may feel overwhelmed or unheard. I want to be the kind of nurse who creates a safe and respectful environment where patients feel valued and understood. In addition, nursing offers continuous growth and opportunities to expand my knowledge while serving my community. I am motivated by the ability to make a direct impact on patient outcomes while also promoting education, prevention, and overall well-being. Pursuing nursing allows me to combine my passion for helping others with a meaningful and purposeful career, and it represents my commitment to lifelong learning and compassionate care. 2. The phrase “human touch” to me represents more than physical contact—it embodies empathy, connection, and compassion in patient care. Human touch is a fundamental aspect of nursing that communicates care, reassurance, and understanding without words. It allows patients to feel acknowledged as individuals, not just as cases or conditions, and provides comfort during moments of fear, uncertainty, or pain. To me, human touch signifies the human side of healthcare, where emotional support is just as important as medical treatment. In nursing, human touch can take many forms, from holding a patient’s hand, gently placing a hand on a shoulder, or even maintaining eye contact and offering a warm smile. These gestures can convey reassurance, empathy, and presence when words alone may not be enough. Patients often experience anxiety, loneliness, or stress, and simple acts of compassionate touch can reduce these feelings significantly. For example, when a patient is awaiting test results or undergoing a procedure, a nurse’s gentle touch can communicate safety and calmness, helping the patient feel seen, valued, and supported. Human touch also has measurable impacts on patient outcomes. Studies have shown that compassionate contact can lower stress hormones, reduce blood pressure, and even improve recovery times. It helps build trust between patients and healthcare providers, which is crucial for effective care. When patients feel safe and cared for, they are more likely to communicate openly about symptoms, follow treatment plans, and participate actively in their own recovery. Beyond physical health, human touch fosters emotional healing and strengthens the therapeutic relationship, which is essential for holistic nursing care. To me, human touch is a reminder that healthcare is not solely about procedures, medications, or technology, it is about connecting with people on a personal and emotional level. It is a symbol of empathy and commitment to patients’ well-being, acknowledging that healing involves both the body and the spirit. In my future career as a nurse, I hope to incorporate human touch consistently, using it as a tool to comfort, reassure, and empower patients, creating an environment where they feel respected, understood, and supported throughout their healthcare journey.

      2. During my time in school, one of the most difficult challenges I faced was learning how to succeed in an environment where some staff members behaved unprofessionally and support was not always easy to find. I entered the program motivated, determined, and excited to grow academically and professionally. However, I quickly realized that success would require more than studying and completing assignments—it would require resilience, self-advocacy, and the courage to search for help even when guidance was not readily offered. At the beginning, I expected instructors and staff to serve as consistent sources of encouragement and direction. Instead, I encountered situations where communication felt dismissive, questions were sometimes met with impatience, and concerns were not always taken seriously. There were moments when I felt uncomfortable asking for clarification because responses could feel rushed or discouraging. This created an environment where I began to doubt myself, even when I was putting in genuine effort. I found myself leaving class feeling confused rather than confident, unsure of whether I fully understood expectations or where to turn for support. The lack of professionalism was challenging not only academically but emotionally. School is already stressful, and feeling unsupported added another layer of pressure. I remember periods when I questioned whether I truly belonged in the program. Instead of receiving reassurance, I often felt like I had to figure things out alone. Assignments and clinical expectations continued to increase, and without clear guidance, I had to work twice as hard just to feel prepared. There were nights when I spent extra hours reviewing material simply because I was unsure if I had learned it correctly the first time. Rather than allowing frustration to stop my progress, I made a decision to take control of my learning experience. The first step was changing my mindset. I realized that while I could not control how others behaved, I could control how I responded. Instead of waiting for help to come to me, I began actively searching for it. I reached out to other instructors, academic advisors, tutoring services, and classmates who were willing to collaborate and share resources. Building connections with peers became especially important, as we supported each other through studying, sharing notes, and encouraging one another during stressful moments. I also learned to advocate for myself professionally. When I needed clarification, I practiced asking specific, respectful questions and documenting important information so I could stay organized. If one person could not provide assistance, I continued seeking answers elsewhere. This process taught me persistence and communication skills that I had never fully developed before. It was not always comfortable, but it helped me grow more confident in speaking up for my needs. Over time, I became less afraid of asking questions and more focused on ensuring I understood the material thoroughly. Another strategy that helped me overcome this challenge was developing strong independent study habits. I spent extra time reviewing material, using outside educational resources, watching instructional videos, and reading supplemental materials to strengthen my understanding. Although this required additional effort, it strengthened my critical thinking skills and made me more self-reliant. I began creating structured study schedules, setting small weekly goals, and holding myself accountable for staying on track. Over time, I realized that I was not only keeping up academically but becoming stronger because of the obstacles I had faced. This experience also helped me develop emotional resilience. Instead of internalizing negativity, I learned to separate my self-worth from others’ attitudes. I reminded myself why I started the program and focused on my long-term goals rather than temporary frustrations. Support from family and trusted friends also played an important role, as they encouraged me to continue pushing forward even when I felt discouraged. Most importantly, this experience reshaped how I view professionalism and leadership. I learned firsthand how much attitude, communication, and respect can impact a student’s confidence and success. Instead of becoming discouraged, I used these experiences as motivation to become the kind of professional who supports others. I now understand the importance of patience, empathy, and creating safe spaces for people to ask questions without fear of judgment. Looking back, what initially felt like a setback became one of the most meaningful learning experiences of my education. I overcame the challenge by refusing to give up, seeking help beyond immediate obstacles, and developing independence and resilience. The experience taught me that success is not always about having perfect circumstances but about adapting when circumstances are difficult. Today, I carry forward the lessons I learned during that time. I am more confident in advocating for myself, more resourceful in finding solutions, and more compassionate toward others who may feel unsupported. Although facing unprofessional behavior was challenging, it ultimately strengthened my character, reinforced my determination, and prepared me to handle future challenges with professionalism, confidence, and perseverance.

Service has always meant more to me than simply helping when it is convenient; it is a commitment to showing up for others with compassion, patience, and understanding. I embody a life of service through the way I interact with people every day, by listening without judgment, offering support during difficult moments, and striving to make others feel seen and valued. My decision to pursue a career in healthcare comes from a genuine desire to care for individuals not only physically, but emotionally and mentally as well. I believe service begins with small, consistent actions that demonstrate kindness and respect, because even simple moments of support can have a lasting impact on someone’s life. Through my education in nursing, I have learned that service is rooted in empathy and advocacy. Patients often enter healthcare settings feeling vulnerable, anxious, or unheard. I believe one of the most important roles of a healthcare professional is to create a safe environment where patients feel respected and supported. Whether through effective communication, cultural awareness, or patient education, I aim to help individuals better understand their health and feel empowered in their care decisions. Service, to me, means treating every patient with dignity and recognizing that healing involves more than medical treatment alone. It also means being attentive to emotional needs, recognizing mental health concerns, and ensuring that patients feel cared for as whole individuals rather than just diagnoses. My long-term goal of becoming a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) reflects my commitment to serving others at a high level of responsibility and trust. Anesthesia care requires both technical skill and emotional awareness. Patients often experience fear and uncertainty before surgery, and I hope to use my knowledge and compassion to ease anxiety, provide reassurance, and advocate for patient safety throughout the surgical experience. By combining advanced clinical training with compassionate care, I will be able to serve individuals during some of their most vulnerable moments while helping promote positive surgical outcomes. Beyond clinical practice, I plan to use my education to serve my community through mentorship, health education, and outreach. I want to help increase awareness about mental health, reduce stigma, and encourage individuals to seek care without fear or shame. I also hope to mentor future healthcare students, especially those who may doubt their abilities or lack guidance, by sharing my experiences and encouraging perseverance. Living a life of service means committing to lifelong learning, humility, and compassion. Through my education and future career, I intend to use my skills to advocate for patients, promote holistic well-being, and make a lasting difference in the lives of the individuals and communities I serve. Service is not just a career goal for me, it is a lifelong responsibility and a purpose that continues to guide my personal and professional journey.
