Breast Cancer Awareness Scholarship in Memory of Martha Dickinson
Losing my grandmother to breast cancer has profoundly shaped my life and perspective. She was the heart of our family, a source of wisdom and strength, and her battle with this disease was both heartbreaking and eye-opening. Witnessing her struggle and ultimate passing brought our family closer together and instilled in me a deep sense of awareness about health, early detection, and the importance of advocating for others. Her journey also motivated me to make health and well-being a priority in my life while encouraging those around me to do the same.
Breast cancer is a devastating disease, but early detection and prevention can save lives. To prevent or detect it early, I believe in the power of education and awareness. Simple measures such as regular self-examinations, scheduling routine mammograms, and staying informed about risk factors can significantly impact outcomes. For my part, I actively share this knowledge within my community and family, emphasizing that health should always be a priority. Additionally, I aim to lead by example, maintaining a balanced diet, exercising regularly, and managing stress—lifestyle choices that contribute to overall health and may help lower the risk of breast cancer.
Genetic testing has also revolutionized the prevention and detection of breast cancer. Tools like BRCA1 and BRCA2 gene testing empower individuals with knowledge about their genetic predisposition to the disease. For those at higher risk, it opens doors to proactive measures such as increased screenings, lifestyle modifications, or preventative surgeries. While I haven’t undergone genetic testing myself, I deeply value its role in early detection and the peace of mind it provides to families facing hereditary cancer risks. It’s an essential resource that can help many, especially those with a family history of breast cancer, like mine.
I believe I deserve this scholarship because my experiences have fueled my determination to make a difference. Losing my grandmother to breast cancer gave me a unique perspective on how the disease affects not just the individual but the entire family. It also strengthened my resolve to honor her memory by supporting efforts to raise awareness and empower others with knowledge and resources. As a Criminal Justice major, I am preparing to serve communities and advocate for equity and justice, including ensuring access to healthcare and information for underserved populations.
This scholarship would help me achieve my academic and career goals, enabling me to create a meaningful impact in my community and beyond. By easing the financial burden of education, it would allow me to focus on my studies and further my ability to inspire positive change. In honoring my grandmother’s legacy, I hope to build a life and career dedicated to helping others, just as she always did in her quiet, powerful way. This opportunity would be a step toward making that vision a reality, ensuring her story and the lessons she taught me continue to inspire others.

I’m Maria, a student at the University of Maine at Fort Kent, pursuing a degree in Criminal Justice. I come from a close-knit family of six, where I’m the oldest of four siblings. Growing up in Manila, Philippines, I learned the importance of family, responsibility, and resilience. My father, a former professional basketball player, taught me about discipline, teamwork, and perseverance. My mother, now a nurse, has been a source of inspiration with her dedication to helping others and her incredible work ethic. Her career has motivated me to pursue a path where I can make a meaningful difference in the lives of others.
After my family moved to the United States, I quickly adjusted to a new life in Waldorf, Maryland. It wasn’t always easy, but the experience taught me resilience and the value of embracing change. These lessons have guided me through challenges in my life and have fueled my desire to help others overcome their own struggles.
I’m Asian Black American, and my cultural background has given me a unique perspective on diversity and inclusion. Growing up in a multicultural household and navigating multiple identities has shaped the way I see the world. It has fueled my passion for justice, equality, and creating opportunities for those from all walks of life.
I’ve been passionate about education and service from a young age. I’ve been playing volleyball since I was in third grade, and the lessons I’ve learned from sports—teamwork, discipline, leadership—have shaped my approach to academics and personal growth. I want to use my Criminal Justice degree to make a positive impact, whether as an FBI agent or in another role within the government. My goal is to advocate for justice and fairness, particularly for underserved communities that are often overlooked or marginalized.
Beyond my career aspirations, I also want to give back by mentoring young people, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds. I want to share my experiences with them, helping them realize that no matter where they come from, they can achieve their goals if they work hard and stay focused. I believe in the power of community and want to help create a space where everyone has the chance to succeed.
As I continue my journey, I am committed to making a positive impact in the world, both through my professional work and in the lives of those around me. I am driven by a desire to help others, make a difference in my community, and create opportunities for those who need it most. My ultimate goal is to be a source of support and a role model, showing others that with perseverance and dedication, anything is possible.

I come from a family of six, where I am the oldest of four siblings. Growing up, I was instilled with strong family values and a deep appreciation for hard work and perseverance. My father, who had a successful career playing professional basketball overseas, taught me the importance of discipline, teamwork, and dedication. Watching him navigate the challenges of balancing his career and family life motivated me to work hard and stay focused on my goals. My mother, now a nurse, has always been a strong role model for me. She works long hours in a demanding profession while still managing to care for our family. Her work ethic, compassion, and dedication to helping others have greatly influenced the person I am today.
My journey has been shaped by both the cultural and geographical changes I’ve experienced. Originally from Manila, Philippines, my family moved to Waldorf, Maryland, after my father’s basketball career came to an end. The transition from the Philippines to the United States was not easy, as I had to adjust to a new culture, a new education system, and a different way of life. Yet, I quickly learned how to adapt and embrace the opportunities that came with this change. This experience taught me resilience and the importance of staying connected to my roots while embracing new possibilities.
I am a student at the University of Maine at Fort Kent, where I am pursuing a degree in Criminal Justice. My decision to pursue this field stems from my passion for helping others and advocating for justice. I have always been interested in understanding how laws work, how justice systems operate, and how I can make a positive impact in my community. Becoming an FBI agent or working in some other capacity within the government is my ultimate career goal. I want to dedicate my life to protecting those who are vulnerable, advocating for fairness, and ensuring that justice prevails, particularly for underserved communities.
I have always been involved in sports. I’ve played volleyball since I was in third grade, and it has been a big part of my life. Through volleyball, I’ve learned invaluable lessons about teamwork, leadership, discipline, and perseverance. These lessons have shaped how I approach both my academic work and my personal goals. The sport has taught me that success doesn’t come overnight and that setbacks are part of the journey. Whether it’s on the volleyball court or in my studies, I have learned to approach challenges with resilience and determination.
My family has always been my greatest source of motivation. Their sacrifices and hard work inspire me to pursue my dreams with dedication and purpose. My mother’s career as a nurse has especially influenced my view of service and the importance of helping others. I see her as a role model in the way she balances her professional responsibilities with her role as a caretaker. I strive to follow her example, helping those in need and making a difference in my community.
As I continue my journey toward becoming an FBI agent, I also aim to mentor others, particularly young people from disadvantaged backgrounds. I want to share my story and show them that no matter where they come from or the challenges they face, they have the ability to succeed if they remain focused and dedicated. I believe in the power of community and the importance of giving back. Once I graduate, I plan to continue mentoring young people and volunteering with organizations that focus on youth development, justice, and community healing.
Earl Pascua Filipino-American Heritage Scholarship
During high school, one of my closest volleyball teammates became a powerful example of resilience and selflessness. Her family faced financial difficulties, and as the eldest child, she became the breadwinner. At just 16 years old, she took on the role of provider for her younger siblings, working late-night shifts at a local diner and juggling the demands of school and volleyball. Despite the immense challenges, she continued to show up for practice, complete her assignments, and lead her siblings with unwavering determination.
One moment that stands out vividly was during our volleyball season when we were preparing for the regional finals. Practices were intense, and everyone on the team felt the pressure to perform. My teammate arrived at practice visibly exhausted one day. She later confided in me that she had stayed up the night before helping her younger siblings with their homework after a long shift at work. Yet, despite her exhaustion, she gave her all on the court, diving for balls, motivating the team, and never letting her circumstances affect her performance.
Her commitment to her family didn’t stop at providing financially. She acted as a mentor to her siblings, ensuring they stayed focused on their studies and personal growth. She often spoke of how she wanted them to have opportunities she didn’t, and that dream fueled her perseverance.
As a team, we rallied around her. We helped her study for tests during breaks and offered emotional support whenever she needed someone to lean on. Witnessing her strength inspired us all to push harder and appreciate the privileges we often took for granted.
Her story profoundly impacted me. It taught me that some problems are bigger than ourselves but still require us to act. Even though she could have easily given up under the weight of her responsibilities, she chose to rise above the challenges because she believed it was the right thing to do—for her siblings, her family, and herself.
The main message I would share with the next generation is this: true strength lies in selflessness and perseverance, even in the face of overwhelming odds. My teammate’s journey proves that you don’t have to wait for the perfect circumstances to take action. Sometimes, the act of showing up, day after day, and doing what needs to be done is what creates the biggest impact.
Her actions also highlight the importance of a support system. While she carried much of the burden herself, the encouragement and teamwork from those around her helped lighten the load. It’s a reminder that when we see someone struggling with a challenge larger than themselves, stepping in to offer even the smallest amount of support can make a world of difference.
For me, her story is a legacy of hope, resilience, and the power of love for one’s family. It shows that no matter how daunting the circumstances, we can rise to the occasion when driven by a purpose greater than ourselves. It also emphasizes that acts of courage don’t always involve grand gestures. Sometimes, they’re found in the quiet determination to keep going, even when no one is watching.
I hope to pass on her lesson to the next generation: when faced with life’s greatest challenges, don’t shy away. Lean into them, not for recognition or reward, but because it’s the right thing to do. And when you see others in their own battles, don’t hesitate to stand by them. Together, we can overcome even the most daunting of obstacles, creating a ripple effect of compassion, resilience, and change that can transform communities.

Giving back to my community has always been important to me. One way I contribute is by mentoring younger volleyball players. As someone who has played the sport since third grade, I understand how crucial guidance can be during formative years. I teach these players not only the technical skills of the game but also emphasize the importance of teamwork, discipline, and balancing sports with academics. It’s rewarding to see their confidence grow both on and off the court. Some of them have gone on to earn leadership roles on their teams, and knowing I played a part in their growth motivates me to continue mentoring.
In addition to volleyball, I volunteer at local events such as food drives, fundraisers, and community cleanups. These opportunities allow me to connect with people from diverse backgrounds while addressing immediate needs within our community. Through these experiences, I’ve learned that giving back is not always about big gestures; it’s about showing up and making a difference, no matter how small.
After graduating with a Criminal Justice degree, I plan to continue this spirit of service in my professional life. Whether as an FBI agent or in another role within public service, I aim to work closely with underserved communities to advocate for fairness and protect those who may not have a voice. My goal is to be a source of hope for individuals who face systemic challenges, ensuring they feel seen, heard, and valued.
Beyond my professional work, I hope to expand my involvement in community-building initiatives. One of my dreams is to mentor young people, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds. Coming from a similar environment, I understand how challenging it can be to dream big when resources are limited. I want to share my story of resilience, highlighting how education, perseverance, and community support can pave the way to success.
I also plan to volunteer with organizations that focus on youth development and restorative justice. Restorative justice resonates with me because it focuses on healing relationships, offering second chances, and fostering accountability. I believe these values are essential for creating stronger, healthier communities. By working with such organizations, I hope to provide young people with opportunities to rebuild their lives and make meaningful contributions to society.
For me, giving back isn’t just a responsibility—it’s a way to honor the support and kindness I’ve received throughout my journey. From my parents’ sacrifices to my coaches’ mentorship, these influences have shaped who I am today. Giving back allows me to pay forward the opportunities I’ve been given while creating a ripple effect of positive change.
In the future, I envision creating a mentorship program that combines sports and education to empower youth. This program would provide academic tutoring, career guidance, and athletic training, emphasizing the balance between personal development and professional aspirations. My hope is that this initiative will inspire young people to aim higher and work towards building better futures for themselves and their communities.
Ultimately, I believe that our greatest impact lies in how we uplift others. By committing to service and leadership, I hope to inspire those around me to do the same. The opportunity to give back is not just about making a difference today but about building a legacy of hope and opportunity for generations to come.

Marcus Aurelius's Meditations, specifically Book 2, Section 1
“When you wake up in the morning, tell yourself: The people I deal with today will be meddling, ungrateful, arrogant, dishonest, jealous, and surly. They are like this because they can't tell good from evil. But I have seen the beauty of the good and the ugliness of the bad, and I know that I am a part of nature. So I will meet these people with the understanding that they are just doing what comes naturally to them, and I will respond to them with kindness, patience, and respect.”
In this passage from Marcus Aurelius’s Meditations, the Roman emperor and Stoic philosopher offers a profound reflection on how to navigate interpersonal relationships with wisdom and composure. The text highlights a core Stoic principle: the cultivation of inner virtue and the maintenance of personal integrity in the face of external challenges. Aurelius's counsel emphasizes the importance of understanding human nature and responding to it with deliberate kindness and patience.
The central thesis of Aurelius’s message is that an individual should expect and prepare for the inherent imperfections of others. By acknowledging that people will display traits such as meddling, ingratitude, arrogance, dishonesty, jealousy, and surliness, Aurelius presents a realistic and unvarnished view of human behavior. This acknowledgment is not an invitation to harbor cynicism or frustration but rather a framework for personal conduct. Aurelius’s advice is rooted in the Stoic understanding that such negative behaviors often arise from ignorance and a lack of moral clarity. When people act poorly, it is because they are not fully aware of what constitutes true good or evil. Recognizing this ignorance allows one to approach such interactions with a sense of empathy rather than judgment.
Aurelius’s insight encourages the reader to maintain a steadfast commitment to personal virtue regardless of the behavior exhibited by others. This commitment is essential to Stoic philosophy, which emphasizes the importance of internal control over external circumstances. By preparing oneself mentally for the inevitable imperfections of others, an individual can more effectively manage their responses and uphold their own ethical standards. The passage reflects a Stoic ideal of inner fortitude—maintaining composure and moral integrity even in challenging situations. Aurelius suggests that by understanding the natural limitations of others, one can more easily embody kindness, patience, and respect, thereby responding to negativity with grace rather than frustration.
This approach is deeply intertwined with the concept of empathy in Stoic philosophy. Aurelius advocates for viewing others’ actions through the lens of their limitations, rather than through personal grievance. This perspective allows for a more compassionate and less reactive response. It is a call to action to practice understanding rather than simply reacting to perceived slights. By doing so, individuals can prevent external factors from disturbing their internal peace, a central goal of Stoicism. This empathy is not about condoning bad behavior but rather about recognizing the shared human condition and responding in a manner that aligns with one's own values and virtues.
Moreover, Aurelius’s passage underscores the importance of self-reflection and personal responsibility in shaping one’s interactions with others. The Stoic practice of preparing oneself mentally for daily encounters aligns with a broader philosophical approach that values self-discipline and rational control. By setting a mental expectation for the shortcomings of others, one is better equipped to respond in a way that is consistent with Stoic virtues—wisdom, justice, courage, and moderation. This proactive stance enables individuals to navigate social dynamics more effectively, preserving their own integrity and contributing positively to their relationships.
In addition to personal virtue, Aurelius’s advice highlights the significance of maintaining a broader perspective on human behavior. His reflections encourage individuals to recognize that everyone is part of a larger natural order and that faults and shortcomings are inherent to human nature. This perspective fosters a sense of interconnectedness and acceptance, reinforcing the Stoic view that external events are beyond one’s control, but one’s responses to these events are within one's power. By embracing this understanding, individuals can cultivate a sense of tranquility and acceptance, which enhances their overall well-being and effectiveness in interacting with others.
Marcus Aurelius’s passage from Meditations provides a nuanced framework for dealing with the imperfections of others while maintaining personal virtue. By preparing oneself for the inevitable flaws in human behavior and responding with empathy, kindness, and patience, one aligns with core Stoic principles of inner fortitude and moral integrity. Aurelius’s reflection not only guides individuals in managing interpersonal conflicts but also emphasizes the importance of self-discipline and understanding in achieving personal tranquility. Through this approach, one can navigate the complexities of human interactions with grace and maintain a steadfast commitment to ethical principles, contributing to a more harmonious and fulfilling life.

My journey through volleyball, from a third-grade beginner to an experienced player and mentor, has been profoundly transformative. Starting with the basics in elementary school, each practice and game has contributed to my growth, not only as an athlete but as an individual. The sport has taught me invaluable lessons in discipline, persistence, and teamwork. The rigorous training and countless matches have instilled a deep sense of confidence and self-belief that transcends the court. These attributes have become foundational in my approach to challenges beyond volleyball, including academics and personal relationships. The sport has shown me that success is the result of sustained effort and dedication, and this principle continues to guide me in various aspects of my life.
The resilience I have developed through volleyball has been particularly impactful. Facing setbacks, such as injuries or tough losses, has taught me to view challenges as opportunities for growth rather than obstacles. Each difficulty has been a lesson in perseverance, reinforcing the importance of maintaining a positive attitude and pushing forward despite adversity. This mindset has become a core part of my approach to problem-solving and has strengthened my ability to navigate complex situations with confidence. Embracing challenges with this perspective has allowed me to build a resilient character that can tackle difficulties head-on, both in sports and in everyday life.
My role as a mentor and community engager has been one of the most rewarding aspects of my volleyball journey. Sharing my knowledge and experiences with younger players provides me with a unique opportunity to influence their development and passion for the sport. Whether through coaching clinics or individual guidance, helping others improve their skills and achieve their goals is immensely fulfilling. Additionally, organizing local events and promoting an active lifestyle allows me to give back to the community, fostering a sense of camaraderie and encouraging others to pursue their own interests in sports and wellness.
