Bio

I am a former Division-1 college football player (University of South Dakota) who is passionate about being a man for others. My ultimate vision for my nursing career is to provide care that is both clinically proficient and holistically supportive. I believe that nursing demands not only intellectual skill but also spiritual resilience. This perspective is reflected in my personal experiences and beliefs. The Apostle Paul’s words in Ephesians 6:12 remind us that our challenges often have a deeper, spiritual dimension. My own battle with Psoriatic Arthritis, which once left me unable to walk in August of 2023, was a profound test of both physical and spiritual strength. I aim to be equipped with the skills to translate complex medical information into meaningful, individualized care. I also desire to support patients holistically, addressing their emotional and spiritual needs alongside their physical health. By embracing a comprehensive approach to patient care, I aim to offer the most compassionate and effective support possible.

As a former Division-1 football player, I had defined myself through physical and athletic capabilities. However, when Psoriatic Arthritis began to strip away my mobility and independence, it forced me to confront not only my physical limitations but also my understanding of what it means to truly care for others. Through my own experience as a patient, I discovered my calling to nursing. The catalyst was my interaction with Sarah, my Humira nurse, whose approach to care transcended medical treatment. Her combination of clinical expertise and empathy showed me that nursing is about treating not just the condition, but the whole person. This realization fundamentally shifted my perspective on healthcare and ignited my passion for nursing. My desire to pursue nursing stems from a deep understanding of what it means to be vulnerable and in need of compassionate care. Having experienced the darkness of hopelessness during my battle with psoriatic arthritis, I gained insights into the patient experience. This perspective will allow me to connect with patients on a deeper level, understanding their fears, and frustrations. As a future nurse, I am committed to serving the Milwaukee community, particularly addressing the healthcare disparities that affect our Black community. The statistics are stark: Black Milwaukeeans face a premature death rate 68.98% higher than the county average, and Black women experience infant mortality rates three times higher than their White counterparts. These disparities reflect Milwaukee's historical struggles with racism and segregation, creating barriers to healthcare access and equity. While I recognize that I cannot single-handedly solve all socioeconomic and health equity challenges, I am determined to make a meaningful impact through nursing. My approach will be holistic, addressing not only the medical needs of my patients but also considering their social, emotional, and spiritual well-being. This comprehensive care model is inspired by my own healing journey, where I experienced firsthand how spiritual faith and emotional support, particularly from my mother and my nurse Sarah, were crucial elements in my recovery. I plan to contribute to my community by being more than just a healthcare provider – I aim to be an advocate, educator, and source of hope for those navigating health challenges. Drawing from my experience as a former athlete and now as someone managing a chronic condition, I understand resilience and the power of having healthcare professionals who truly listen and care. I will use my platform as a nurse to promote health literacy, preventive care, and better access to healthcare resources in underserved communities. My commitment to nursing is rooted in the belief that every patient deserves comprehensive, compassionate care that acknowledges their dignity and humanity. Through my future role as a nurse, I hope to embody the same level of empathy and professional excellence that helped me during my own health crisis, while working actively to address the healthcare disparities in Milwaukee's Black community. This is not just a career choice for me – it is a calling to serve, heal, and make a lasting difference in my community.

As a former Division-1 football player, I have faced significant health challenges that have ultimately inspired me to pursue a career in nursing. My personal experience navigating the healthcare system and working closely with compassionate medical professionals has instilled in me a deep appreciation for nursing and a strong desire to make a positive impact on the lives of my future patients. When I was first diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis, I was extremely hesitant to embrace the recommended biologic treatment, fearing the potential side effects. I was diagnosed in July of 2022, and decided to avoid treatment to pursue a “natural approach”. In August of 2023, I was unable to walk. My left knee had become so swollen to the point that anyone could see the outline of it throughout my pants. As a former D-1 athlete, I felt useless. I even had significant trouble with dressing myself daily. Unable to walk I was desperate for a miracle. I decided that it was time for me to meet with a rheumatologist and pursue a biologic medicine. It was the kindness and support of a Humira nurse named Sarah that ultimately convinced me to give the medication a chance. Sarah's empathy, patience, and unwavering commitment to my well-being not only provided me with the tools and information I needed to manage my condition but also restored my hope and sense of self-worth during a particularly challenging time. The profound impact that Sarah had on my life has inspired me to emulate her example as a future nurse. I aspire to be a source of hope and encouragement for my patients, just as she was for me. I understand the importance of taking the time to listen to patients, to understand their unique concerns and fears, and to provide them with the support and resources they need to achieve the best possible quality of life. Moreover, I am committed to staying up-to-date with the latest advancements in medical research and treatment options, so that I can offer my patients the most comprehensive and effective care. I believe that nursing is not just about administering medications and performing medical procedures, but about fostering a deep connection with patients and being of service to others. As a former athlete, I also understand the importance of physical activity and rehabilitation in the healing process. I plan to incorporate these elements into my nursing practice, working closely with other healthcare providers to develop personalized treatment plans that address the unique needs of each patient. My goal is to inspire my patients to live their best lives, just as Sarah inspired me. I want to be a source of hope and encouragement, helping my patients to overcome their challenges and reclaim their sense of self-worth and independence. By embodying the values of compassion, empathy, and dedication which are the hallmarks of nursing, I believe I can make a lasting and positive impact on the lives of those I serve.
