In my field I plan to become a pediatric diabetes educator. I plan to help young children to understand that a life with diabetes is not a terrible life. This is a very important field of study to me as I, myself am a type one diabetic so I feel that I can connect with the children in a way that not many others in the field can. I would love to help the children to understand that it is not their fault that this happened to them, and that they can live a normal life with the disease. When I was twelve years old I got diagnosed with type one diabetes. I honestly thought that my life was going to be over, and that I was going to die. I had a wonderful team of educators come in to my room every few hours to educate me and my family on how this new life was going to work. I was very blessed to have such an amazing team that helped me to better understand what was going on, and that I did nothing wrong. When I came home from the hospital we were given a sheet with 24/7 educators that can help us anytime we need them. This definitely helped to alleviate some stress. Without the educators that I had those few days in the hospital, and throughout the seven years I have had this condition I would not be where I am today. I want to be able to travel to summer camps for diabetics and help on the medical team. When I was younger I went to diabetes camp for five years. The experience of going to camp definitely changed my life. I would love to help bring the joy of going away to summer camp to you g children that also have type one diabetes. Going to summer camp helped me to become more independent in my care, while being in a safe and fun environment. Summer camp also helped me to feel like I was not alone and the only person going through life with this condition. I want to be on the other side of camp being a medical staff member. My dream is to be able to help the young campers feel safe and comfortable trying new things while at camp. Helping other diabetics has been a goal of mine since I have gotten diagnosed with type one diabetes. I hope to one day reach my goal and help other children.
