As a rising junior at Belhaven University majoring in Biology, music is something that usually keeps me up and helps drive my goals. Billie Eilish, with her unique sound and meaningful lyrics, has been a source of comfort and motivation throughout my college journey. Three of her songs that deeply resonate with me are "Ocean Eyes," "When the Party's Over," and "Everything I Wanted."
"Ocean Eyes" was one of the first songs I ever heard by Billie Eilish, and it instantly drew me in. The beautiful melody mixed with the heartfelt lyrics speaks to the vulnerability and depth of emotion so often felt while navigating academic and personal life. It reminds me that it is okay to feel deeply and to express those feelings, even when they seem overwhelming. This song gives me hope that embracing my emotions can lead to growth and understanding.
"When the Party's Over" speaks to me because it holds a feeling of the bitterness and newness of an ending and a beginning. I have gone through many transitions in college, such as moving away from home and embarking on new challenges in higher education. This song really reflects the sadness that comes with these changes but also brings some sense of acceptance and renewal. It helps me find hope in letting go and embracing the future with open arms.

John Young 'Pursue Your Passion' Scholarship
Hence, this passion guides my interest in pursuing the biological sciences, emphasizing becoming a dermatologist to understand the intricacies of the human body and contribute positively to people's lives. Since I was small, I have been attracted to studying the different intricate systems in our bodies, especially the skin, the largest organ in our bodies and, consequently, our first defense against environmental elements. This curiosity automatically grew into an academic interest in biology, wherein the mystery of cellular processes and human physiology provided me with great enjoyment.
Dermatology is a specialty that interests me for several reasons. The skin, apart from being a vital organ, also acts as an indicator of overall health, reflecting internal issues often much before other symptoms manifest. What makes it very challenging is also what makes it very rewarding: diagnosing and treating a skin condition that will vastly alter a person's quality of life. This attracts me even more: linking clinical practice and ongoing research, whereby I will constantly be updated on medical developments and can introduce new treatments for my patients.
One of my goals is to contribute to this field, focusing on dermatology's cosmetic and medical sides. Where science meets aesthetics, an opportunity is given to help individuals feel proud of their skin while tending to some very serious conditions related to skin cancer, autoimmune disorders, and chronic skin diseases. The ability to make a difference in people's lives, improve their appearance, boost their self-esteem, or manage life-altering conditions motivates me.
Experiences have also made me passionate about the field. I grew up seeing family members suffering from skin conditions, which significantly affected their self-esteem and resulted in mental issues. These experiences underlined the immense effect dermatological health could have on general well-being, culminating in the desire for a career where empathy and expertise can be offered.
I have been focused on vigorously following an academic and clinical career path towards my passion. While at university, I shall pursue research opportunities to build a very formidable foundational understanding of the scientific evidence behind dermatology. Internships, as well as shadowing programs, are also, in my view, to help gain hands-on experience and further practical shaping of skills related to patient care.
Long-term, I would want to be a dermatologist accomplished in the clinic but one who is going to help move the field forward with her research and education. I hope to mentor future generations of medical professionals by giving back some of the knowledge and experience I will have gained, as well as to advocate for the importance of skin health in general medical care. I feel this holistic approach of taking care of the patient, research, and mentorship would provide me the right platform to make my mark in dermatology
Rory J. and Kathryn A. Blanchard Allied Health Scholarship
Technology has fundamentally changed how healthcare is delivered, making it more efficient and improving patient outcomes. As a rising sophomore at Belhaven University majoring in Biology, I am deeply interested in how advancements in technology can be used by allied health professionals and first responders to enhance their practice.
One major way technology has transformed healthcare is through electronic health records (EHRs). EHRs allow for the quick sharing of patient information among healthcare providers, which can be crucial in emergencies. For example, if a first responder has access to a patient's medical history through an EHR, they can make more informed decisions on the spot. This can be life-saving in situations where every second counts.
Telemedicine is another innovative solution that has made a significant impact. Telemedicine allows healthcare providers to consult with patients remotely, which is especially important for those living in rural or underserved areas. This technology has become even more vital during the COVID-19 pandemic, as it reduces the need for in-person visits and helps keep both patients and healthcare providers safe.
Wearable technology, like fitness trackers and smartwatches, is also playing a big role in healthcare. These devices can monitor vital signs such as heart rate and blood pressure in real-time. For allied health professionals, this data can provide valuable insights into a patient's health and help in creating personalized treatment plans. For example, a physical therapist can use data from a wearable device to track a patient's progress and adjust their exercise regimen accordingly.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is another area where technology is making a difference. AI can analyze large amounts of data quickly and accurately, helping healthcare providers diagnose conditions and predict patient outcomes. For instance, AI algorithms can help radiologists detect anomalies in medical images more accurately than the human eye, leading to earlier and more accurate diagnoses.
As a Black woman studying Biology, I am particularly interested in how these technological advancements can address disparities in healthcare. Many underserved communities do not have easy access to healthcare services, and technology can help bridge this gap. For example, mobile health clinics equipped with telemedicine capabilities can bring healthcare services directly to these communities.
In conclusion, technology is transforming healthcare in many ways, making it more efficient and improving patient outcomes. Allied health professionals and first responders can leverage these advancements to provide better care. As I continue my studies at Belhaven University, I am excited to explore how I can contribute to this field and make a positive impact on healthcare delivery.

Joy Of Life Inspire’s AAA Scholarship
During my senior year of high school, I faced hardships that tested my strength and resilience. The first major challenge came when I tore my ACL playing basketball, making me lose interest and potential scholarships. As the captain and only senior on the team, missing the playoffs was devastating. Two days after surgery, I was homebound and in pain, but I knew I had to support my team. I convinced my mom to drive me to the game so I could be there, crutches and all, to cheer them on and bring as much positive energy as possible. Even though I was physically limited, I wanted to show my team I was still with them in spirit.
Around the same time, I experienced a heartbreaking loss. My "granny," a woman who was not related to me by blood but was like family, passed away. She had helped raise me and supported my mom and me when we were struggling financially. Losing her was incredibly hard because she had always been there for us, and she never got to see me in my prom dress or watch me graduate. She was so proud of me and my efforts to balance school, sports, and community service, but she did not want to burden me with her illness. Her passing left a void in my life but motivated me to push forward and honor her memory.
Despite these challenges, I remained committed to my goals and my community. I found strength in my faith and leaned on God to help me through the tough times. I also kept myself busy with extracurricular activities and community service. Volunteering allowed me to give back and stay connected to those around me. I helped organize events, tutored younger students, and participated in drives while being in position of the youth council of the city of Gulfport. These activities not only kept me grounded but also helped me find purpose and healing.
Agape love, which is selfless and unconditional, has always been a guiding principle in my life. I strive to embody this love by supporting those around me, even when struggling. Whether being there for my teammates, helping my family, or giving back to my community, I believe showing love and kindness can make a significant impact.
As a rising sophomore majoring in Biological sciences at Belhaven University, I continue facing challenges but am determined to overcome them. My college GPA is not where I want it to be, but I am working hard to improve it. I am committed to my studies and making a difference in the lives of others. I know that with perseverance, faith, and a heart full of agape love, I can achieve my goals and inspire others to do the same.
In conclusion, my hardships during my senior year taught me the importance of resilience, faith, and community. By supporting my team, honoring my granny's memory, and giving back, I have learned to embody agape love and positively impact those around me. I am grateful for my opportunities and look forward to continuing my journey with the same spirit of love and determination.
