Tom LoCasale Developing Character Through Golf Scholarship
As a six-year-old stepping onto the golf course, I did not realize how rare it was to see someone who looked like me there, but I quickly learned that sometimes the most powerful swings are the ones that challenge expectations. I was mesmerized by the sound of the ball meeting the club and lifting into the air. In that moment, golf felt like a possibility. What I did not yet understand was that the game would become one of my greatest teachers, shaping how I think, lead, and pursue purpose. Growing up as a Black female golfer from an inner-city community, I quickly realized that many spaces in golf and STEM fields lacked representation from people who looked like me. Rather than discouraging me, this realization motivated me to excel and expand access for others. Golf taught me discipline, patience, resilience, and the power of preparation. These lessons now guide my academic journey, leadership roles, and commitment to service. Academically, I approach my studies with the same focus I bring to the course. I have maintained a 4.2 GPA at Charles R. Drew Charter School while completing rigorous coursework. These experiences strengthened my analytical thinking and research skills, which are essential for my future goals. Through my experiences as a competitive athlete, I became interested in the science behind performance, resilience, and mental health. High-performing athletes often face intense pressure, yet their mental well-being is frequently overlooked. I plan to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Psychology, followed by a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology with a specialization in sports psychology. My goal is to conduct research and develop evidence-based strategies that help athletes manage pressure, protect their mental health, and perform at their highest potential. Golf has played a major role in helping me discover who I am. The sport taught me to analyze performance, remain calm under pressure, and continuously improve through thoughtful adjustments. Whether interpreting data in AP Statistics or reflecting on a challenging round, I rely on the same mindset: preparation, reflection, and persistence. Golf showed me that growth comes from patience and resilience, both on and off the course. These lessons have also shaped how I lead. After the tragic death of a classmate by suicide, I recognized the urgent need for mental health awareness among young people. In response, I co-founded The Atlanta Mind Project, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to reducing stigma and supporting teen mental health. Through this organization, we have secured grant funding, hosted workshops, and trained more than 25 student ambassadors across four states, reaching nearly 1,000 young people. I am also a four-time peer-elected President (9th – 12th grade) and was selected as one of thirty students district-wide to represent my peers on the Atlanta Public Schools Student Advisory Council. These experiences taught me leadership and how to advocate for others, turn ideas into action, and lead with empathy. My dedication to excellence has also been recognized through several honors, including being named the Southeastern Region Outstanding Scholar Athlete of the Year in 2022 and 2024, an award recognizing achievement in academics, athletics, and service among nearly 2,000 teens. I have also received the Charles R. Drew Charter Golf Team Leadership Award, been named Varsity Golfer with the Highest GPA from 2024 through 2026, and currently serve as Team Captain. These experiences reinforced the importance of balance, accountability, and perseverance. Golf has shaped who I am as a student, leader, and future researcher. I hope to combine my passion for golf, my STEM education, and my commitment to mental health to expand access to care and representation for athletes from underrepresented communities.
