For me, sports have always meant more than just fun games with friends. Sports mean everything to me. I’ve played football since the day I could run. I watched my two older cousins play football from when I was a baby to when they graduated. I watch any sport on TV every chance I get, plus I’m addicted to playing Madden NFL on the X-box. The whole COVID-19 situation has helped me appreciate sports even more than I already did. It taught me to appreciate things before they disappear. When I was young, I was like most kids, but I was taller and really husky until about sixth grade. Because of my size, I had trouble doing some things I wanted to do. My favorite sport was football, but most people wanted me to play basketball. So, I ended up playing other sports like track and basketball. Even though I wasn't super excited about those sports, I knew they would help me get better for football. They also taught me an important lesson about teamwork. When I finally got to middle school, I could play football, which was my dream! Over the years, I worked really hard and became a great team player. My teammates even called me "Poppa" as a joke because everyone could see how much I loved the game. While some people treated football like just a seasonal sport, I was always training and practicing with my coaches. But, being so dedicated to football sometimes meant my grades and social life suffered. Throughout high school, my coaches often repeated phrases like "kick pushing" and "fight through the pain," telling us that these lessons would make us stronger. At the time, I thought they were just sharing stories from their own glory days. I knew those words had meaning, but I didn't fully understand them until after high school. As I started my very fresh adult life, I remembered all the lessons sports had taught me and those phrases I had heard so many times. I realized they weren't just random sayings; they were important lessons for life. I began to see that what my coaches taught me was meant for my future, not just for playing games. While sports might seem like just games, the lessons you learn from them are really important. I'm still working on applying these lessons to my college courses, but I often get compliments about my work ethic and teamwork. I want to use what I learned in sports in every part of my life. Looking at issues like divorces and broken families, I wonder if things would be different if everyone had been taught the same lessons I learned: keep pushing and to fight through the pain. Overall, I feel prepared for my future because of the mindset and characteristics I developed through sports. They taught me that I can overcome any obstacles with hard work and determination. I hope to pass these lessons on to my own kids so they can experience the same things through sports. Sports have truly made a lasting impact on my life, and I believe that wholeheartedly.
Tim Dunham Blood Disorder Awareness Scholarship
My mom has been affected by a blood disorder called anemia. She has experienced a range of physical, emotional, and social impacts. She has had to miss out on job opportunities due to being fatigued and unable to get out of bed to attend work. Many people around her would put her in the category of being lazy or delusional about certain situations that would make it difficult for her to go about her life. A few of her symptoms varied widely which includes fatigue, pain, frequent infections, or easy bruising and bleeding. At times, her condition lead to complications that require ongoing medical treatment such as blood transfusions and days of bed rest. Her emotional state was not the best living with a blood disorder can lead to her experiencing anxiety, depression, or stress due to the uncertainty of health and the need for continuous medical care. The emotional burden also affects her relationships and daily activities. It also influenced be to become more independent in my own life because I knew it would be occurrences that would make it impossible for her to escort me to my important events in my life. Sometimes to when drive me to my sport practices knew I had to come up with other alternative ways to get to where I wanted or was scheduled to be. I know she faced stigma or misunderstanding about their condition, which lead to her being isolated. Some of her friends left her life because according to them, she was boring and needed too much resting time. She’s always had to make lifestyle adjustments, such as dietary changes or avoiding certain activities. She is aware of her health issues and she is now able to maintain better health overall with her diet and lifestyle choices. To spread awareness about blood disorders, individuals can take several steps. One, learning about their specific condition and sharing that knowledge with friends, family, and the community can help demystify the disorder and dispel myths. Two, advocating and getting involved with organizations focused on blood disorders can amplify their voice. This may involve participating in campaigns, fundraising, or advocating for better healthcare policies. Three, sharing personal experiences through blogs, social media, or local events can help raise awareness and foster understanding among others. Four, community events and organizing or participating in awareness events, such as walks, runs, or health fairs, can engage the community and highlight the importance of blood health. Lastly, collaboration with healthcare professionals, working with doctors, nurses, and researchers to promote educational initiatives can help ensure accurate information reaches a wider audience. Seeing some of the things my mom endured with her health issues made me realize how important it is to have a good heart and a understanding mind for others that maybe less energetic and not open to being involved with certain activities. Clearly, it is helpful to take the necessary steps to ensure a positive outcome for each individual dealing with blood disorders or diseases. Spreading information to help individuals raise their awareness about blood disorders and also building a supportive community that fosters understanding and compassion is truly important.

The military and protecting our country hold deep personal significance for me. Growing up, I was always inspired by the courage, dedication, and sacrifice of those who serve in the military. Even my father served in the Air Force and insisted that my middle name be Stealth. Their commitment and my father’s to safeguarding our nation and its values is truly admirable. To me, the military represents a sense of duty and honor. It is about selflessly putting the needs of others above oneself and being willing to make profound sacrifices for the greater good. The men and women who choose to serve in the military embody these values, and they inspire me to strive for excellence in all aspects of my life. It means safeguarding the principles and freedoms that our nation stands for. It means ensuring that every citizen has the opportunity to pursue their dreams, to live in a just and democratic society, and to enjoy the rights and privileges that come with being a part of this great nation. It’s such an amazing privilege to have such a great country to live in and feel safe and secure in knowing that I can become a leader and advocate for my fellow citizens. Furthermore, criminal justice is a field that deeply motivates me in life. It is about upholding fairness, equality, and the rule of law. Criminal justice is not just about punishing those who commit crimes, but also about ensuring that justice is served and that the rights of all individuals, including the accused, are protected. The pursuit of justice in the criminal justice system is crucial for maintaining a safe and harmonious society. It involves working towards rehabilitation and reintegration, as well as preventing future crimes through education and community outreach. The idea of making a positive impact on people's lives and contributing to a more just and equitable society is a driving force for me. In conclusion, the military and protecting our country represent a deep personal connection for me. They embody values such as duty, sacrifice, and honor.
