I am a proud graduate of Lower Richland High School and an aspiring registered nurse with a passion for serving others through compassionate healthcare. I graduated as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), Life Scholar, Honor Graduate, International Baccalaureate (IB) course student, and College and Career Ready graduate, reflecting my commitment to academic excellence and personal growth. My passion for nursing began at a young age by watching my Nana dedicate her life to caring for others. Inspired by her example, I pursued health science courses throughout high school, including Clinical Studies, Health Science 3, and Anatomy & Physiology. Today, I am proud to be working in the healthcare field as a CNA, where I provide direct patient care and gain valuable hands-on experience. These experiences have strengthened my desire to become a nurse and make a meaningful difference in people's lives. In addition to academics and healthcare, I have been actively involved in HOSA, cheerleading, and softball. These activities have helped me develop leadership, teamwork, communication, and time-management skills while balancing school, work, and community involvement. This fall, I will attend North Carolina Central University to pursue a degree in Nursing. My long-term goal is to become a travel nurse, allowing me to care for diverse populations and make a positive impact in communities across the country. I am a strong scholarship candidate because I am hardworking, dedicated, and committed to serving others.

To me, having a spirit of excellence means giving my best in everything I do, even when no one is watching. Excellence is not about being perfect; it is about being willing to learn, grow, and challenge myself to become better. I try to demonstrate this mindset every day through my education, work, relationships, and commitment to my future career in nursing.
Throughout high school, I have pushed myself academically and personally because I know that the goals I have for my future require dedication. I challenged myself through health science courses, Anatomy and Physiology, HOSA, and clinical experiences that allowed me to explore healthcare beyond the classroom. Becoming a Certified Nursing Assistant was especially meaningful because it gave me the opportunity to gain hands-on experience caring for others. Working in healthcare has taught me that excellence requires patience, responsibility, communication, and compassion. Every patient deserves to feel respected and cared for, and I want to carry that mindset with me throughout my nursing career.
I also exemplify excellence through my willingness to balance multiple responsibilities. I have worked while completing school and preparing for college, which has taught me time management, discipline, and perseverance. There have been moments when I felt overwhelmed or uncertain about my future, but I have learned not to allow challenges to stop me. Instead, I remind myself why I started and continue working toward my goals. I believe that how you respond to difficult situations says a lot about your character.
Giving back to my community is another important part of who I am. I believe service does not always have to involve a large organization or major event. Sometimes, giving back can be as simple as helping someone who needs assistance, encouraging a friend, supporting my family, or being willing to listen when someone needs to talk. My experiences in healthcare have strengthened my desire to serve others because I have seen how meaningful even small acts of kindness can be.
My family has also influenced my commitment to service. I was raised to understand that success means more when you use your opportunities to help others. Watching my family work hard and support one another taught me the importance of showing up for people, especially during difficult times. Those lessons have become a part of the person I am today.
As I begin my journey at North Carolina Central University and pursue my nursing degree, I plan to continue carrying this spirit of excellence and service with me. My long-term goal is to become a travel nurse and provide compassionate care to people from different communities and backgrounds. I want my career to be more than a job; I want it to be a way to make a meaningful difference in people's lives.
Ultimately, I exemplify excellence by refusing to settle for less than my best and by continuing to grow through every experience. I give back by using my time, knowledge, compassion, and experiences to support others. I believe that true excellence is measured not only by what you accomplish, but by how many people you are able to positively impact along the way.
Carlos F. Garcia Muentes Scholarship
My family has taught me that life is not always easy, but the way we love, support, and care for one another can make difficult moments easier to carry. Growing up, I learned the importance of strength, compassion, perseverance, and being there for others. These lessons have shaped the way I see the world and have played a major role in my decision to pursue a career in nursing.
One of the biggest influences on my career aspirations has been my Nana. From a young age, I watched her work in healthcare and saw how much care she gave to the people around her. She became a Certified Nursing Assistant and later worked toward becoming a Physical Therapist. I remember traveling with her and seeing how seriously she took caring for others. Watching her showed me that healthcare is more than a job. It is an opportunity to make someone feel seen, respected, safe, and cared for during some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives. Her example helped me realize that I wanted to make that same kind of difference in the lives of others.
My family has also taught me resilience. Growing up with a single mother showed me what determination looks like. I watched my mother work hard to provide for our family and continue moving forward even when circumstances were difficult. Having siblings has also taught me responsibility, patience, and the importance of being someone others can depend on. These experiences have shaped my belief that success is not only about what you accomplish for yourself, but also about how you use your accomplishments to help the people around you.
Losing my sister also changed the way I understand life, family, and healthcare. Experiencing loss at a young age made me realize how important compassionate healthcare professionals are to families during difficult times. It showed me that nurses do much more than provide medical care. They can become a source of comfort, encouragement, and strength for both patients and their families. That understanding has made my desire to become a nurse even stronger.
As I begin my journey at North Carolina Central University, I plan to major in nursing and eventually become a travel nurse. I want to use my education and experiences to care for people from different communities and backgrounds. My family has taught me to never take an opportunity for granted, to keep going when life becomes difficult, and to always make room for compassion.
I carry my family’s story with me as I pursue my future. Their sacrifices, strength, love, and resilience have helped shape the person I am becoming. My goal is not simply to become a nurse; it is to become the kind of nurse who makes patients and families feel cared for when they need it most. In many ways, my family gave me the reason to choose healthcare, and I hope my career will allow me to give that same sense of care back to others.
VNutrition and Wellness Nursing Scholarship
As a future registered nurse, I believe improving people's health begins with education, compassion, and meeting patients where they are. Nutrition is one of the most important factors in preventing and managing chronic illnesses such as diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, and obesity. While medications and medical treatments are essential, healthy eating habits can greatly improve a person's overall well-being and quality of life. As a nurse, I want to empower patients with the knowledge, resources, and confidence to make healthier choices that fit their individual lifestyles, cultures, and financial situations.
One of the first steps I plan to take is educating patients about the connection between nutrition and overall health. Many people understand that eating healthy is important, but they may not know where to begin. I want to explain nutrition in simple, practical ways by teaching patients how to read food labels, understand portion sizes, prepare balanced meals, and recognize the benefits of choosing whole grains, lean proteins, fruits, and vegetables. Rather than overwhelming patients with medical terminology or unrealistic expectations, I want to provide achievable recommendations they can gradually incorporate into their daily lives.
I also believe that listening is just as important as teaching. Every patient has a unique story, and many face challenges such as limited access to fresh foods, financial hardships, busy schedules, or cultural traditions that influence their eating habits. Before offering advice, I want to understand each person's circumstances and work alongside them to create realistic goals. Small changes, such as replacing sugary drinks with water, reducing processed foods, cooking more meals at home, or adding one serving of vegetables each day, can lead to significant improvements over time. By celebrating progress instead of expecting perfection, I hope to encourage patients to develop lifelong healthy habits.
As a Certified Nursing Assistant, I have already seen how proper nutrition affects a patient's recovery, energy level, and emotional well-being. Caring for patients has shown me that healing involves more than treating an illness, it also includes helping people build healthier lifestyles that support long-term wellness. These experiences have reinforced my desire to become a registered nurse and continue educating patients in meaningful ways.
My long-term goal is to become a travel nurse, allowing me to care for diverse populations across the country. Working in different communities will expose me to a variety of cultures and nutritional needs, helping me become a more knowledgeable and compassionate healthcare professional. I also hope to participate in community health fairs, school wellness programs, and local outreach events where I can educate families about healthy eating, disease prevention, and the importance of regular health screenings.
My goal is not only to care for patients when they are sick but also to help prevent illness before it begins. By combining education, compassion, and encouragement, I hope to inspire healthier eating habits and empower individuals and families to take control of their health. I want every patient to leave my care feeling respected, informed, and confident that even small lifestyle changes can lead to a healthier and brighter future.
Dashanna K. McNeil Memorial Scholarship
WinnerMy passion for nursing began with my family and grew through my own experiences in healthcare. Watching my grandmother work in the medical field showed me how meaningful it is to care for others with compassion and patience. She demonstrated that healthcare is not just about treating illnesses but about treating people with dignity, respect, and kindness. Later, my family experienced the devastating loss of my sister to cancer. During that difficult time, I saw firsthand how nurses not only provided medical care but also offered comfort, hope, and emotional support to my family. Their compassion during one of the hardest seasons of my life inspired me to pursue a career where I could make the same difference for others facing difficult circumstances.
As I entered high school, I intentionally enrolled in Health Science, Clinical Studies, and Anatomy & Physiology to learn more about healthcare. Those classes confirmed that nursing was the path I wanted to follow. Earning my Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification gave me hands-on experience caring for patients and strengthened my confidence in my ability to serve others. Working directly with patients taught me the importance of communication, patience, empathy, and attention to detail. It also showed me that even the smallest acts of kindness, a reassuring smile, listening to a patient's concerns, or offering words of encouragement, can have a lasting impact on someone's healing process. Every interaction with a patient reinforced that nursing is more than a profession, it is a calling built on compassion, trust, and service.
This fall, I will attend North Carolina Central University to earn my Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Pursuing an advanced degree is important to me because it will prepare me to provide high-quality, evidence-based care while opening opportunities for leadership, continued education, and career advancement. I want to continually expand my knowledge, stay current with advances in healthcare, and develop the critical thinking skills needed to make sound decisions in fast-paced medical environments. My education will also allow me to advocate for my patients and provide care that addresses both their physical and emotional needs.
My long-term goal is to become a travel nurse. I am excited by the opportunity to work in different hospitals, care for diverse patient populations, and adapt to new healthcare environments. Traveling will allow me to broaden my clinical skills while helping communities experiencing nursing shortages. I hope to learn from healthcare professionals across the country while sharing my own experiences and commitment to compassionate care. No matter where I practice, I want every patient to feel respected, heard, and cared for during some of the most difficult moments of their lives.
For me, success is not measured only by the degree I earn but by the lives I impact. I hope to build a career defined by compassion, professionalism, integrity, and lifelong learning while making a positive difference in every community I have the privilege to serve. Receiving this education will give me the opportunity to fulfill a lifelong dream while honoring my family's sacrifices and the healthcare professionals who inspired me to pursue nursing. My goal is to leave every patient feeling cared for, supported, and hopeful, knowing they were treated with the same compassion that first inspired me to choose this career.
Brett Brakel Memorial Scholarship
Softball has been one of the greatest teachers in my life. While it has helped me develop my athletic abilities, it has also shaped my character, strengthened my resilience, and taught me lessons that I will carry with me long after my playing days are over. Every practice, game, and challenge on the field has helped prepare me for my future, both as a college student and as an aspiring nurse.
One of the biggest lessons softball has taught me is the importance of perseverance. The game is filled with highs and lows. There are days when everything seems to go right, and there are days when you strike out, make an error, or lose a close game. I learned early that one mistake does not define you. Instead, success comes from learning from your setbacks, staying positive, and working harder for the next opportunity. That mindset has carried over into every area of my life. Whether I am facing a difficult class, preparing for an exam, or completing CNA clinicals, I remind myself that growth comes from persistence and a willingness to keep improving.
Softball also taught me the value of teamwork. Every player has a role, and no one wins a game alone. My teammates encouraged me during difficult moments, celebrated my successes, and reminded me that supporting one another is just as important as individual performance. Those experiences helped me become a better communicator, listener, and leader. They showed me that trust, accountability, and encouragement are essential to achieving a common goal. These are qualities I know will help me as I work alongside doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to provide the best possible care for patients.
The coaches and mentors I have had throughout my softball journey have also left a lasting impact on me. They believed in me even when I doubted myself and constantly challenged me to become stronger both mentally and physically. They emphasized discipline, respect, and integrity, teaching me that how you carry yourself off the field is just as important as how you perform on it. Their guidance has inspired me to approach every opportunity with humility, confidence, and a desire to continue learning.
My experiences on the softball field have also reinforced my passion for helping others. I have learned that leadership is not about being the loudest person on the team, it is about encouraging others, setting a positive example, and stepping up when someone needs support. Those lessons have translated directly into my healthcare experiences as a Certified Nursing Assistant, where compassion, patience, and teamwork are essential every day.
As I begin my journey at North Carolina Central University to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, I will carry the lessons softball has taught me into every classroom, clinical setting, and future workplace. My goal is to become a travel nurse who not only provides excellent medical care but also offers kindness, encouragement, and hope to every patient I meet. Softball has given me far more than memories of games and championships, it has given me resilience, confidence, leadership, and the belief that with hard work and teamwork, I can overcome challenges and make a meaningful difference in the lives of others.
TTOG Scholarship
The IB program challenged me academically in ways I had never experienced before. The workload was demanding, and I quickly realized that success would require discipline, organization, and perseverance. There were many evenings when I balanced homework with studying for exams, completing projects, working my part-time job, and preparing for CNA clinical experiences. At times, the workload felt overwhelming, but I learned to manage my time, prioritize my responsibilities, and remain committed to my goals. These experiences strengthened my work ethic and taught me that hard work is not about being perfect, it is about showing up every day and giving your best effort, even when no one is watching.
My health science education also taught me the importance of being kind. Through earning my Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification and participating in clinical experiences, I cared for patients during some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives. I learned that healthcare is about much more than medical knowledge. Patients remember how they are treated, how they are spoken to, and whether they feel respected and valued. Something as simple as listening patiently, offering reassurance, or showing compassion can make a lasting difference. These experiences reinforced that kindness is one of the most important qualities a healthcare professional can possess, and it is a value I will carry with me throughout my career.
Outside the classroom, I have balanced rigorous academics with extracurricular involvement, employment, and family responsibilities. Working while attending school taught me responsibility, accountability, and the importance of serving others with a positive attitude. Whether I was helping customers at work, collaborating with classmates, or supporting patients during clinicals, I learned that being nice is not simply about being friendly, it is about treating every person with dignity, empathy, and respect.
Financially, my path to higher education has not been easy. I was raised by a hardworking single mother who has always sacrificed to provide opportunities for my siblings and me. She recently purchased our family's home, a milestone that represents years of dedication and perseverance. While I am incredibly proud of her accomplishment, I also understand the financial responsibilities that come with homeownership. With two younger siblings still depending on her, I never want my college education to become an additional financial burden.
Because of these circumstances, I have worked throughout high school while maintaining my academic performance and pursuing opportunities that would prepare me for my future career. Even with careful planning and financial aid, the cost of tuition, books, housing, uniforms, and other college expenses remains significant. Receiving this scholarship would allow me to focus more fully on my education and clinical training instead of worrying about finances. It would also reduce the stress on my mother, who has already sacrificed so much to help me reach this point.
This fall, I will attend North Carolina Central University to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. My long-term goal is to become a travel nurse, providing compassionate, high-quality care to patients in communities across the country. I want to be the kind of nurse who not only delivers excellent medical care but also makes patients feel seen, heard, and valued. The lessons I have learned through my advanced coursework, my clinical experiences, and my family's example have prepared me to work hard, lead with kindness, and serve others with compassion. These are the values that define who I am today and the healthcare professional I aspire to become.
Bick First Generation Scholarship
Being a first-generation college student means more to me than earning a degree, it means creating a new path for my family. It means proving that where you come from does not determine where you can go. As the first person in my immediate family to attend a four-year university, I know that I am not only pursuing my own dreams but also setting an example for my younger siblings and showing them that higher education is possible. My journey has not been without challenges. I was raised by a hardworking single mother who has always done everything she could to provide for our family. Watching her work tirelessly while raising three children taught me the value of perseverance, sacrifice, and determination. My family has also experienced the heartbreaking loss of my sister to cancer. Watching her fight with courage and seeing the compassion shown by her healthcare team inspired me to pursue a career in nursing. Their kindness during one of the hardest times in our lives showed me the impact a healthcare professional can have beyond medical treatment. Despite these obstacles, I refused to let my circumstances define me. I challenged myself academically by completing Health Science courses, Clinical Studies, and Anatomy & Physiology while earning my Certified Nursing Assistant certification. Through clinical experiences and patient care, I discovered that serving others is not just something I enjoy, it is my purpose. This fall, I will attend North Carolina Central University to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, with the long-term goal of becoming a travel nurse who provides compassionate care to patients from diverse communities. Receiving this scholarship would ease the financial burden of college for my family. My mother recently purchased our first home, and with two younger siblings, I want to lessen the financial pressure on her while focusing on my education. This support would allow me to dedicate more time to my studies, clinical experiences, and community service rather than worrying about how to cover educational expenses. My dream is to become the kind of nurse who makes patients feel seen, heard, and cared for during their most vulnerable moments. As a first-generation college student, I know success requires resilience, faith, and hard work. This scholarship would not only invest in my education but also in the future patients and communities I hope to serve. I am determined to honor every opportunity I receive by giving back through compassionate healthcare and by inspiring others to believe that their dreams are within reach.
Sola Family Scholarship
Growing up with a single mother has shaped my character, values, and goals in ways that continue to guide me every day. From an early age, I watched my mother take on the full responsibility of providing for our family while still making sure I felt supported, loved, and encouraged. She worked tirelessly, often putting my needs ahead of her own, and her dedication showed me what true strength looks like. Because of her example, I learned that success is not given easily, it is earned through hard work, sacrifice, and persistence even when life becomes difficult. As I grew older, I began to understand the weight of what my mother carried on her shoulders. She balanced work, parenting, and daily responsibilities without complaining, even when things were overwhelming. There were times when challenges arose, but she always found a way to keep moving forward. Watching her taught me responsibility at a young age and showed me that giving up is never an option. Her actions influenced the way I approach my education, pushing me to stay focused, remain disciplined, and take pride in everything I do. I learned to value opportunities because I saw how hard she worked to create them for me. Growing up in a single-parent household also helped me become independent and self-motivated. I learned how to manage my time, set goals for myself, and stay committed without needing constant supervision. These skills have helped me excel academically and pursue challenging paths such as becoming a Certified Nursing Assistant and taking rigorous coursework in high school. My experiences have also taught me empathy. Seeing my mother’s sacrifices made me more aware of the struggles many families face, and it has given me a deeper understanding of perseverance and resilience in others. Most importantly, my mother’s strength has inspired my desire to pursue a career in nursing. I want to dedicate my life to helping others the same way she dedicated her life to helping me. Her example taught me the importance of compassion, patience, and selflessness qualities that are essential in healthcare. I hope to use my education to serve patients who are going through difficult times, just as my mother helped me overcome challenges throughout my life. Everything I have learned from her has prepared me to give back to my community in a meaningful way and to build a future that reflects her sacrifices and love.
Bright Lights Scholarship
My future plans are centered on building a career where I can make a meaningful difference in the lives of others. This fall, I will attend North Carolina Central University to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. After earning my degree and becoming a registered nurse, I hope to gain experience in a hospital setting before becoming a travel nurse. Traveling will allow me to provide care in communities facing nursing shortages, learn from different healthcare systems, and expand my clinical knowledge while serving patients with compassion and respect. Long-term, I also hope to continue my education by earning an advanced nursing degree so I can take on leadership roles, mentor future nurses, and advocate for better patient care. My passion for nursing comes from both personal experience and a lifelong desire to help others. Watching my sister battle cancer showed me how important compassionate healthcare professionals are during life's most difficult moments. The nurses who cared for her not only treated her illness but also provided comfort, encouragement, and hope to our family. Their kindness inspired me to pursue a career where I can have that same positive impact on others. My experiences earning my Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification, volunteering in my community, and working directly with patients have strengthened my commitment to this profession and confirmed that nursing is where I belong. Receiving this scholarship would make a tremendous difference in helping me achieve my educational and career goals. Although I am committed to working hard throughout college, the cost of tuition, books, supplies, uniforms, clinical equipment, and other educational expenses can be overwhelming. This scholarship would reduce the financial burden on my family and allow me to focus more on my studies, clinical training, and community service instead of worrying about how I will afford my education. It would also give me greater opportunities to participate in leadership organizations, volunteer experiences, and professional development activities that will prepare me to become the best nurse I can be. More than financial assistance, this scholarship would serve as an investment in my future and in the communities I hope to serve. I am determined to use my education to provide compassionate, high-quality care, advocate for patients, and inspire others to pursue careers in healthcare. With the support of this scholarship, I will be one step closer to achieving my dream of becoming a nurse who makes a lasting difference in the lives of patients and families every day.
Charlene K. Howard Chogo Scholarship
Women's empowerment means creating opportunities for women to discover their strength, pursue their goals, and believe that their voices matter. I strive to contribute to that mission by leading through my actions, encouraging others, and demonstrating that determination and compassion can create lasting change. Throughout high school, I have challenged myself academically by taking rigorous courses, including International Baccalaureate classes, becoming an honor graduate, and earning my Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification. These accomplishments were not always easy, but they taught me the value of resilience and perseverance. I hope that by pursuing my dreams despite challenges, I can inspire other young women to believe they are capable of achieving their own goals.
My commitment to women's empowerment extends beyond academics. Through volunteer service and my work as a CNA, I have learned that empowerment often begins with kindness, support, and the willingness to help someone through difficult moments. Caring for others has shown me the importance of listening without judgment, treating every person with dignity, and advocating for those who may not have a voice. I have met women from different backgrounds and life experiences, each with unique struggles and strengths. These interactions have deepened my understanding of how important it is to uplift one another instead of competing against one another. Even small acts of encouragement can help someone gain confidence and realize their potential. One of the experiences that has shaped my perspective the most was witnessing my sister's battle with cancer and the strength she displayed throughout her journey. Watching her face adversity with courage inspired me to approach life with resilience and compassion. Her determination motivates me to make a difference in the lives of others, especially women who may be facing physical, emotional, or personal challenges. I want to honor her memory by living a life of service and by supporting those who need hope during difficult times. As I pursue my nursing degree and eventually become a travel nurse, I plan to continue advocating for women in healthcare and in my community. I hope to mentor young girls who are interested in medical careers, encourage them to pursue higher education, and remind them that their dreams are achievable regardless of the obstacles they face. I believe true empowerment is about lifting others as we climb, creating opportunities for future generations, and using our experiences to inspire positive change. By leading with compassion, integrity, and determination, I hope to leave a lasting impact and help build a future where every woman feels valued, respected, and empowered to succeed.
Beyond The Ride Scholarship
Grief doesn’t always arrive with a loud knock. Sometimes it slips in quietly, rearranges the furniture, and forces you to sit with it. Grief began its quiet work the day my sister lay in a hospital bed surrounded by cords and machines, undergoing chemotherapy. I remember watching her in pain and feeling completely helpless, knowing there was nothing I could do to take it away. Many nights, I cried and prayed that she would recover. My sister, our family’s rainbow baby, was a source of joy and hope even during difficult times. When she passed away, my world seemed to fall apart. I became withdrawn, unmotivated, and overwhelmed by sadness. It felt as though the light she carried had disappeared, and I did not know how to move forward. Even after moving to a new area, meeting new people, and starting at a new school, I often found myself reliving memories of her illness and loss. Over time, however, I began to heal. I learned that happiness does not erase grief; it exists alongside it. I joined school clubs, spent more time with my family, and allowed myself to dream about the future again. My mother played a major role in my healing. Despite her own pain, she reminded me that my sister would want us to continue living fully and finding joy in life. Losing my sister changed me forever, but it also taught me resilience. I realized that staying trapped in sadness would not bring her back. Instead, I could honor her memory by living the life she would have wanted for me. Today, I carry her with me in everything I do. While grief will always be part of my story, so will her love, strength, and light.
Wieland Nurse Appreciation Scholarship
I have decided to pursue a career in nursing because I have always had a passion for helping others and making a positive difference in people's lives. Nursing combines compassion, knowledge, and service, allowing healthcare professionals to care for people during some of the most important and vulnerable moments of their lives. The opportunity to provide comfort, support, and quality care to patients is what draws me to this profession and motivates me to continue working toward my goals. The person who has inspired me the most is my Nana. Growing up, I often accompanied her to work and watched her interact with patients. I saw the kindness, patience, and dedication she showed every day. She began her healthcare journey as a Certified Nursing Assistant and later became a Physical Therapist. Watching her grow in her career showed me that healthcare is more than a job—it is a calling that requires commitment, empathy, and a genuine desire to help others. Seeing the positive impact she had on her patients inspired me to follow a similar path and pursue a career where I could serve others in a meaningful way. My interest in nursing continued to grow throughout high school. Beginning in the ninth grade, I enrolled in Health Science courses and later participated in Clinical Studies, Anatomy and Physiology, and CNA training. These experiences provided me with valuable knowledge and hands-on opportunities to learn about patient care. Earning my Certified Nursing Assistant certification and working in the healthcare field has allowed me to develop important skills such as communication, teamwork, and compassion. Each experience has strengthened my desire to become a registered nurse. In addition to my educational experiences, personal events have also influenced my decision to pursue nursing. The loss of my sister was one of the most difficult experiences of my life. During that time, I witnessed the important role healthcare professionals played in caring for patients and supporting families facing unimaginable challenges. Their compassion and dedication left a lasting impression on me. I realized that nurses do more than provide medical care. They offer comfort, hope, and emotional support when people need it most. As I continue my education and prepare to attend North Carolina Central University to study nursing, I am committed to becoming a compassionate and skilled healthcare professional. My goal is to positively impact the lives of my patients, advocate for quality healthcare, and eventually become a travel nurse so I can serve diverse communities across the country. I found out about this scholarship through my school's scholarship resources and college readiness programs.
Maxwell Tuan Nguyen Memorial Scholarship
My inspiration for pursuing a career in the medical field comes from both personal experiences and a lifelong passion for helping others. Growing up, I watched my Nana work in healthcare and saw the dedication, compassion, and commitment she brought to caring for others. She often shared stories about her experiences, and I admired the way she was able to provide comfort and support to people during difficult times. Seeing her passion for helping others planted the first seed of interest in healthcare and showed me that a career in medicine is about much more than treating illnesses, it is about improving lives. When my sister passed away, my family experienced a level of grief that is difficult to describe. During that painful time, I saw firsthand how healthcare professionals support families through loss and hardship. Their compassion did not erase the pain, but it helped us feel understood and cared for during one of the darkest periods of our lives. That experience showed me that healthcare professionals do much more than care for physical conditions they provide comfort, hope, and human connection when people need it most. It was then that I realized I wanted to dedicate my life to serving others in the same way. To prepare for a career in healthcare, I have worked hard both academically and professionally. I graduated as a Certified Nursing Assistant.Throughout high school, I participated in Health Science and Clinical Studies programs, where I gained foundational knowledge of healthcare practices and patient care. These programs allowed me to develop skills that reinforced my passion for nursing and gave me a deeper understanding of the responsibilities that come with working in the medical field. In addition to my education, I currently work as a CNA, which has provided me with valuable hands-on experience caring for patients. Through this role, I have learned the importance of empathy, communication, patience, and professionalism. I have had the opportunity to assist individuals with daily activities, support their physical and emotional needs, and work alongside healthcare teams to ensure quality care. These experiences have strengthened my desire to continue my education and pursue a nursing career. My long-term goal is to earn my Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), become a registered nurse, and eventually work as a travel nurse. I am excited by the opportunity to care for diverse populations and gain experience in different healthcare environments. As a nurse, I plan to make a difference by providing compassionate, patient-centered care and advocating for those who may not have a voice for themselves. I want every patient I encounter to feel respected, valued, and supported, regardless of their circumstances. Beyond direct patient care, I hope to serve as a role model for others who are pursuing careers in healthcare. I want to demonstrate that compassion, resilience, and dedication can create meaningful change in the lives of others. My personal experiences have taught me the importance of kindness and empathy, and I plan to carry those lessons with me throughout my career. Healthcare has already changed my life in many ways. Through the inspiration of my Nana, the experiences I shared with my sister, and the knowledge I have gained as a CNA, I have discovered my purpose: helping others heal, find comfort, and maintain hope during challenging times. I am committed to making a positive difference in the lives of my future patients and their families, and I look forward to dedicating my career to serving others with compassion and excellence.

One situation that profoundly shaped my life involved my younger sister during her battle with cancer. As a family, we spent countless hours in hospitals, doctors' offices, and treatment centers, hoping and praying for her recovery. While those experiences were often filled with fear, uncertainty, and heartbreak, they also allowed me to witness extraordinary compassion from the healthcare professionals who cared for her. Although my sister ultimately passed away, the kindness and support shown to her and my family left a lasting impact on me and helped shape the person I am today. When someone is diagnosed with a serious illness, the focus is often placed on treatments, medications, and procedures. However, I learned that compassion is just as important as medical care. My sister endured many difficult treatments and hospital stays. There were days when she was scared, exhausted, and frustrated by everything she was going through. During those moments, the nurses and healthcare staff consistently treated her with patience, empathy, and kindness. One nurse, in particular, made a lasting impression on me. She always greeted my sister with a warm smile and took the time to talk with her about things beyond her illness. She learned about her interests, listened to her stories, and made her laugh when she was having a difficult day. She never treated my sister as just another patient. Instead, she treated her as a person whose feelings, fears, and dreams mattered. Even when my sister was struggling, this nurse found ways to bring comfort and encouragement to her. I also witnessed compassion in the way healthcare professionals cared for my family. They understood that cancer affects everyone, not just the person diagnosed. They patiently answered our questions, explained medical information in ways we could understand, and offered reassurance when we felt overwhelmed. During some of our darkest moments, they listened to our concerns and provided emotional support. Their compassion helped us feel less alone as we navigated an experience that no family ever wants to face. When my sister passed away, the grief was overwhelming. It felt as though a part of my world had been taken away. Yet even during that painful time, I remember the compassion shown by the healthcare team. They mourned alongside us, offered comforting words, and treated our family with dignity and respect. Their kindness did not take away the pain of losing my sister, but it reminded me that genuine compassion can bring comfort even when there is no cure. This experience changed my life forever. It taught me that healthcare is about more than treating illnesses; it is about caring for people and supporting families through some of the most difficult moments they will ever face. Watching nurses care for my sister with such dedication inspired me to pursue a career in nursing. I realized that I wanted to become someone who could provide not only medical care but also comfort, understanding, and hope. Today, as a Certified Nursing Assistant and future nursing student, I carry these lessons with me every day. The compassion shown to my sister and my family inspired my passion for healthcare and continues to motivate me to serve others. I hope to become the kind of nurse who makes patients feel seen, heard, and valued, just as my sister was. Although losing my sister was one of the hardest experiences of my life, it taught me the true meaning of compassion.

Nursing interests me because it allows me to make a positive impact on the lives of others while combining my passion for healthcare, science, and service. From a young age, I was inspired by my Nana, who worked in the medical field. Watching her care for patients and hearing about her experiences showed me the importance of compassion, dedication, and hard work. Her example motivated me to pursue a career where I could help people during some of the most challenging moments of their lives. My goal is to earn my Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), become a registered nurse, and eventually work as a travel nurse. I am excited by the opportunity to care for diverse patient populations while gaining experience in different healthcare settings across the country. In the future, I hope to continue advancing my education and professional skills, allowing me to take on leadership roles and make an even greater impact within the healthcare field. I have already accomplished several milestones that have helped me move closer to these goals. I graduated as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), an honor graduate, a Life Scholar, and an International Baccalaureate (IB) course student. These achievements demonstrate my commitment to academic excellence, leadership, and personal growth. Throughout high school, I participated in Health Science and Clinical Studies courses, which allowed me to develop foundational medical knowledge and gain insight into patient care. In addition to my education, I currently work as a CNA, where I have gained valuable hands-on experience assisting patients with daily activities, communicating with healthcare teams, and providing compassionate care. This role has strengthened my understanding of the responsibilities that come with working in healthcare and has confirmed that nursing is the right career path for me. I have also participated in clinical experiences and healthcare shadowing opportunities through MedEx Academy. During these experiences, I observed healthcare professionals in clinical settings and learned about various aspects of patient care, medical procedures, and teamwork within the healthcare system. These opportunities allowed me to see firsthand the dedication required to provide quality care and further fueled my passion for nursing. Through my academic achievements, clinical experiences, and current work as a CNA, I have developed the skills, knowledge, and determination needed to succeed in nursing. I am eager to continue my education, grow as a healthcare professional, and dedicate my career to improving the lives of others through compassionate and high-quality patient care.
