As a child, I did not recognize how abnormal that responsibility was. I simply knew my family had needs and someone had to meet them. Her fears also became ours. I still remember hiding canned food underneath our trailer in preparation for Y2K because she was convinced we needed to prepare for what was coming. Children do not have the perspective to separate a parent’s fears from reality. We learn to live inside them. The instability extended beyond finances. My mother repeatedly prioritized relationships with men over protecting her children. As I grew older, I struggled with whether she had ever truly wanted to be a mother. Children naturally expect their parents to protect them; when that protection is absent, they learn to protect themselves and sometimes everyone around them. My mother has often told me, “You are so much stronger than me.” She is right, but that strength was built from necessity. Becoming a mother of four myself changed how I understood my childhood. Motherhood showed me how completely children depend on adults for more than food and shelter. They need safety, consistency, advocacy, attention, and the certainty that someone will show up for them.
