Being an athlete taught me about hard work and dedication. I've learned that to be good at what you do, you can't just sit around and expect things to always go your way. I was never blessed with physical gifts, but I did put in extra work to make the team and be the best player I could be. In order to be a starter at my school, you had to earn it. This is in fact my team's motto: "always earned, never given." Being an athlete required me to practice constantly, give 100 percent effort, and do extra training like going to the gym even when I didn't feel like it. Skills aren't something you just inherit. The phrase "practice makes perfect" is reality. If I wanted to be playing at a critical part of a close game, I had to prove that I was willing to work hard and be dedicated in practicing my position. Being a student-athlete introduced me to teamwork. I've learned the importance of playing well with others. When I work on group projects in school and when I'm interviewed for jobs, one of the basic questions I've been asked is if I work well with others. In football and track, the concept of teamwork is instilled into you daily. Every member of the team serves a particular role, whether it be catching the ball or sprinting a certain section of the track. As Captain, I've learned that I am part of something bigger. It's not just about me and my needs. In order for me to be successful and for the team to be successful, teamwork is necessary to achieve a common purpose or goal. Being a student athlete also taught me perseverance. Sometimes you train really hard, practice many hours, and it is still not enough. Even though I would work hard in practice, other players would start ahead of me. It got so difficult for me to deal with that I considered quitting sports altogether because my situation didn't seem fair. Fortunately, I was able to see beyond my lack of playing time and continue on. I didn't take these slights personally. Situations like this helped build my character. I've learned to not get frustrated with my lack of participation and deal with challenges as they come. My parents would often tell me luck favors the prepared. Opportunities don't always come when you expect them. Being a student-athlete also taught me balance. In my sports, not only did I have to worry about practices or games, I also had to complete school assignments. If I didn't meet the minimum grade in a class, I wasn't allowed to participate in sporting events. I had to be in good standing for academics and athletics. The most difficult part of being a student-athlete is having the dedication to balancing school work and practice. I learned firsthand that student-athletes have to work harder than most. It can be overwhelming for some. Balancing school, sports, and my social life weren't easy. Overall, being an athlete taught me how to be a person with character. Hard work, balance, perseverance, and teamwork are just a few of the characteristics that shaped me. Participating in sports while being a student takes knowledge, patience, and most of all, heart. I wanted to break the cycle of poverty, lack of opportunity, and disillusionment that plagued many in my neighborhood. The idea of being able to provide resources, mentorship, and support to those who had been overlooked and marginalized was my driving force. By offering guidance outside of the classroom—whether it’s through tutoring, after-school programs, or simply offering support when students are struggling—I’d help students build resilience and perseverance. I would also highlight career opportunities in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) fields to show them that these subjects can lead to exciting, well-paying jobs. Furthermore, I would advocate for diversity in STEM education. Many students from underrepresented backgrounds may not have access to resources or role models in science and math. I want to be a visible, supportive figure for those students, showing them that they belong in these fields. I would also work to ensure that all students, regardless of their background, have access to the materials, opportunities, and encouragement they need to succeed in STEM. Lastly, I’d collaborate with teachers and community leaders to ensure that the curriculum reflects the needs and interests of students. By staying engaged with students' feedback and adjusting my teaching methods accordingly, I would create a classroom environment where every student feels valued and motivated to learn. In sum, my goal is to foster a love for science and math in students by making the subjects more accessible, relatable, and fun. I believe that by showing students how these fields can be both personally and professionally rewarding, I can help inspire the next generation of innovators, problem-solvers, and leaders.

Writing has always been a method for me to express myself and understand the world. From a young age, I discovered that words could express my thoughts and emotions in ways that were both liberating and enlightening. Writing allowed me to dive thoroughly into topics that interested me, such as social justice, history, and human psychology. I enjoy the process of translating a complex notion into something tangible, whether it's an essay, a tale, or a poetry. Writing allows me to explore new viewpoints, question my assumptions, and connect with others in ways that are not possible in regular discussion. In high school, writing became even more important to me. It was not only a personal interest, but also an opportunity to make a difference. I started writing for my school's newspaper, focused on topics affecting my neighborhood. I discussed mental health, cultural identity, and the impact of socioeconomic inequities on kids' academic lives. I like how my words could start conversations, elicit empathy, and draw attention to issues that were sometimes disregarded. Writing about these challenges taught me how effective words can be in developing understanding and encouraging change. This event reinforced my commitment to writing as a tool for advocacy and narrative. In college, I intend to continue my writing career by contributing to school publications such as the student newspaper or literary magazine, where I will be able to explore and express the themes that are most important to me with a larger audience. I'm delighted to be a part of a collegiate community with various viewpoints and experiences, and I'm looking forward to writing about issues that affect both students and the greater community. I'm also hoping to locate a writing club or workshop where I can share my creative writing, whether it's fiction, poetry, or personal essays, and learn from other writers who are equally passionate about their profession. Being a member of a club will help me stay motivated, improve my abilities, and give me Furthermore, I see writing as a talent that will complement my academic and professional goals. As I work toward my academic and professional goals, writing will help me analyze my experiences, clarify my views, and communicate effectively. I feel that good writing abilities are vital regardless of the area I choose, and I intend to incorporate them into my college experience by selecting courses that require me to think critically and articulate myself clearly. Beyond controlled situations, I intend to maintain a personal journal in which I can freely express my thoughts, ideas, and reflections as I navigate academic life. I know that journaling will help me stay grounded by giving me opportunity to reflect on my experiences and progress over time. Writing allows me to make sense of the world and myself, and I never want to lose it. College is the ideal environment for me to hone my voice, experiment with new ideas, and push the limits of my creativity. I'm excited to bring my passion of writing to college, where I'll utilize it to connect my experiences, my community, and the world around me.

Growing up as a Black girl, I was always very connected to my neighborhood and felt compelled to give back. Watching family members struggle to get quality healthcare due to cultural and systemic hurdles drove me to pursue a career that would allow me to make a difference. I observed how medical misunderstandings and implicit biases influenced their treatment, frequently making them feel invisible and unheard. These events inspired me to work in healthcare, namely nursing, where I could advocate for others and guarantee that everyone received compassionate, courteous, and culturally sensitive care. As a prospective nurse, my goal is to address healthcare disparities by advocating for people from varied backgrounds. I am enthusiastic about breaking down obstacles that disproportionately affect Black communities, particularly those related to mental health care, maternal health, and chronic illness management. Black women, in particular, have shockingly high maternal death rates, and I believe nurses can help address these inequities by listening to patients, advocating for their needs, and assuring equitable treatment. My personal experience dealing with healthcare issues in my family has taught me that being there, listening, and taking the time to understand a patient's particular circumstances can sometimes have the greatest influence. I intend to use my nursing position to educate and empower my patients, in addition to providing exceptional patient care. Through community health projects, I wish to raise awareness about preventative care and promote healthy practices in underserved areas. I envisage arranging workshops and health checks in collaboration with community centers and schools, delivering healthcare resources to those who need them the most. In the long run, I hope to become a nurse practitioner and start a clinic that focuses on holistic and culturally sensitive care. My objective is to create a safe environment in which Black and minority patients feel truly recognized, respected, and cared for. By addressing health disparities at the grassroots level, I hope to foster trust and have a meaningful impact on my community's well-being. As a Black female in nursing, I have a unique perspective and obligation, and I am dedicated to changing healthcare into a career that serves everyone equally, particularly those whose voices have frequently gone unnoticed. Beyond my own goals, I wish to be a role model for other young Black girls who do not yet see themselves represented in healthcare. Too often, minorities lack role models in industries such as nursing, making these careers appear remote or unachievable. I want to demonstrate that we can not only excel in these professions, but also bring significant change and compassion to them. Through mentorship programs, speaking at local schools, and volunteering, I hope to inspire future generations to pursue healthcare careers and advocate for health fairness. I believe that representation in healthcare benefits more than simply patients; it also generates trust, understanding, and a more inclusive system. I am dedicated to tearing down boundaries and empowering people.

As a Black girl growing up in Los Angeles, I soon realized the expectations and prejudices society placed on me. Subtle presumptions about my academic interests and overt prejudices in how others viewed my goals were among the pressures. I had to navigate a society that frequently viewed me through stereotyped prisms. However, I was aware from the beginning that I wanted to go against these norms and reinterpret what it meant to be a young Black woman in my community. My senior year of high school was a turning point in my journey. I went to a school where athletics received the majority of the funding, and students from my area were frequently directed toward less demanding academic programs. However, I had a strong interest in environmental justice, a topic that was hardly mentioned in my community or school. I witnessed personally how low-income, minority areas in Los Angeles were disproportionately impacted by pollution, with problems ranging from poor air quality to restricted access to green spaces. I suggested forming an environmental justice club with the goal of teaching students about the ways in which these issues impacted our communities because I was determined to make a difference. At first, the concept was regarded with scepticism. Friends questioned why I would focus on "nature stuff" rather than participating in activities that appeared more "practical" for our town. Teachers and administrators, while cordial, did not see the purpose in allocating money to an environmental group at an inner-city school. They perceived it as a luxury issue, unrelated to my classmates' immediate worries. However, I knew that environmental justice was about equity and health—it was about our right to breathe clean air, have access to green areas, and lobby for policies that benefit everyone, not just the city's wealthiest districts. I approached the task by assembling a small but dedicated group of friends who shared my idea. We started researching, contacting local environmental organizations, and reaching out to community leaders. We held meetings and invited speakers to examine the effects of pollution in South Los Angeles and surrounding communities. We even arranged a community clean-up day, which drew attention from other kids and instructors. As word spread, the administration took note, and by the end of the year, they had approved a modest budget for our group. This event taught me how powerful one voice, supported by a community, can be in shaping people's thoughts and actions. It also taught me that society conventions are frequently just hurdles waiting to be demolished. Through my lobbying, I was able to spark a discussion about the importance of environmental health in my school and area, particularly among minority communities. I witnessed younger students join engaged, proudly donning our club's t-shirts and continuing the work we had begun. It grew from a club to a movement. Now, I'm committed to a future in which I can continue to address environmental disparities, leveraging my skills to engage with groups who are frequently left out of the discourse. My experiences as a Black girl in Los Angeles have formed me into a pioneer who understands that breaking down barriers is more than simply a personal win; it is a method to generate possibilities and inspire change for others. This experience has taught me that breaking expectations is more than just pushing boundaries; it is also about broadening what is possible for everyone around you.

I recently found out that I have gallstones, which is something that can be very painful. This was especially painful because I didn't know how to fix the problem and I didn't know I had it so I was only making matters worse everyday. Knowing that there are people out here that are way worse off and go through way worse things when it comes to healthcare. I want to be one of the people that are able to help and motivate them to keep going. As a black woman in the healthcare field I hope to inspire those after me and show them that just because our standards were set for us doesn't mean we can't exceed those set standards. I want my patient's to be able to look at me and trust me solely based on the fact that I am good at my job and not look at my skin color and what they have heard from society. I want to be able to heal people and allow them to feel better physically and emotionally about themselves. Being able to support the patient's in any way they need, and my team for that matter. Give them motivation when it is needed, allow them to know it's ok not to be strong every time and that the truly strong people show their emotions. I would also love to be able to advocate for equitable healthcare access, particularly for underserved communities, and those who are unable to advocate for themselves. By raising awareness about health disparities and working with policymakers, I can contribute to creating systemic changes that ensure everyone receives quality care, regardless of their background or socioeconomic status. I hope to empower the next generation of female leaders in healthcare, encouraging them to pursue their dreams and break through barriers in this traditionally male-dominated field. Allow them to have a figure to look up to when they don't believe they can get here. Someone who can prove all the theories wrong and show the young girls that they can write their own narrative. I plan to engage with communities through educational programs on health literacy, particularly among underserved populations. Empowering individuals with knowledge about their health can significantly improve outcomes. Ultimately, I want be the healthcare provided that shows up and shows out for their patient and those around who need it the most. Giving the community a chance to grow and learn more about the healthcare field.
